Objectives and activities
Objects ullduims
The PCC is coinmitied to serving in Si John's wilh St Mary's parish of Mansfield. By working towards this
objective we hope to see many people from our Climmunity become members of the worshipping communiiy ai
St John's and St Mary's churches.
We have considered the Commission's guidgnce on publi¢ b¢nefit with panicular regard to the specific guidance
to charities that advance religion. We try to enable people to live out Iheir faith as part of our parish community
through worship, prayer and providing opportunities for people to hear the Good News and to explore it further.
We do this by helping people develop their relationship with God thTough church 5etvice5 and Small groups.
Provision is made for pastoral services to the community, particularly baptisms, weddings and funerals and
mission work both locally and siipporting the missioii work of others acr05S the world. To do this well: we
maintain oiir chuwh buildings and hall.

A£hievement$ and performance
Worship and Prayer
During 20?4 there were between 6 and 8 acts of public worship iii a nonnal week at St John s with St Mary's.
On Siindays we have had up to 4 5ervice5 includin¥ a weekly evenin¥ service for some months. Duriii¥ the week
we have coiitinued with two Motning Prayer services, a traditional Holy ComTnunion: and our all-age fainily
worship iihich is now a150 weekl),. In the ￿.]nter month5 we once a¥yain inoved our Sunday worship into the
church centre to save L)n heating. We provide church specifically for children at 2 or i services each month on a
Sunday. Towards Ihe end of the year, we began to offer a weekly children s church during tem) time. We also
offer the opportuniry for people io catch up on the sem)on online through a video feed L)f one service each week.
Pastoral Care
A group of people met this year with a view to reviewing our current pastoral care and improving it in the
future. Many mernbers of the church are involved in regularly ￿'riting to. phoning, and visiting those who are in
need. This group looks to continue to meet to increase our provision and make sure that no one is missed out.
Members of the clergy have been able to take Holy Communion 10 the homes of members of the congregation
who cannot physically attend church.
Fellowship
We currently have around 60-70 people who are part of 7 small group5 of different types. Four groups meet in
homes in the evening. Two groups meet diiring the day. one as part of the miiiistry of Free to Be. One is a J'outh
small group that ineets on Tllcsday afternoons. These groiips are place5 where people caii come together to pray
and read the Bible. encourage on¢ another, and enjoy spending tim¢ with each other.
We have a150 held several social event5 to help people coni)ect with 01)e another, iiicluding a 'parish weekend at
home,. We also have had luiiches after church, a beetle drive. meals, aiid uthtr events.
On i l Decen)ber 2024 there w'ere li9 people on the electoral roll, a net increase of foul since December 2023.
We were able to h05t three baptism services whilst baptlslllg Seven children and three adults during 2024. In
addition, we hosted a Bishop s confimiation service in Ociober at St John's. A member of our Longregation was

Community Work
Free To Be {FTB) meets at the Ladybrook Communit}. Centre every Wednesda} morning in terni time and the
group continue 10 value our partnership ￿1th the charity running the Centre. Lad!,brook Enterprises {LE}. FTB is
self-funded as we pay our way through subs and donations, but LE subsidises the cost ot" the room hire as they
recognise the value of the work we do, and our numbers help them when they are applying flir grants. We are
very grateful tl) the staff team at the Community Centre M,ho siippon us practically but also in valuing what we
dl) for ihe Ladybrook community.
NotThally about 30 people attend each week, in¢liiding tegm members. but we have 36 people on our register.
The majority gre between 70 and 97 years old (including some of the volunteers}. We now have 3 members in
their 90,5 who are all going stroiig. We have a varied prograinme of activities which has incliided: Beetle
Drives. quizzes, games mornings, talks on local mining and textile industries, talks from our curate Rev Eden
Parris. talks from an Occupational fherapist, and a talk from a member of the Westfield Folk House pantomime
group. In addition, we had vi5lts from the Laboiir and Conservative candidates ninning for MP wheii they
answered our questions. We raised enoiigh to make seven Samaritan's Purse shoe boxes as we do every year and
I￿atched a video of children receiving them. Our la%t meeting i)f the }'ear is a Christmas cel¢bration, including
carols, a Christtna5 thought for the day, Christmas dinner and 501ne fun activities at St. John'5 Centre. We have
had i coaLI) trips this year, one to UniveTSity of Nottingham Lakeside Arts to Set the Boots exhibition at the
Djanogly Centre. another to Bakem'ell ai)d a third one to Southwell Mi115ter to see The Longest Yam. We also
had an aftemoon tea in a teain member's garden when we fomally didii t tneet during August.
FTB is a happy place but this year we have had SOTne 5adne55 and 1055 011 top of the loss of a member iii late
202i. One ol. our longstsnding members died in Jaiiuary 2024 aller a spell in the hospice with Inembers of the
group being at her bedgide duiing the last week of her lite, so she didi)'t die alone, as she had iio living relatives.
Then in the suminer we had the sudden death of one of our origii)al meinbers. while she wasn't in the best of
health it was unexpected. This lady was tsur first member and our FTB"ewangelist" as she would tell people far
ai)d wide about Free to Be. She made people welcon)e, came along With them on theii first visit and n)ade
everyone laugh and feel happN'. Man) of us ￿'ere able to attend her funeral and we w'ere able to have SL)me input
to her funeral service to say what a valuable member of FfB she had been. Her loss has left a massive hole, bui
'e are grateful for all the people who are ivith us because of her. The aim of the group is to create communiry,
and it is obviously Wlirking. as people have supported each other during these sad losses. The team works hard
for our members providing a listening ear. reassurance and advice, lifts. ￿hen necessary. visiting people at home
or hospital when they are ill or have had falls and generally just being there for people. They are an amazing
team, gnd we gre all very grgteful for their hard work. We do need more volunteers, even if it's jusi to make a
cuppa to relegse others to talk to those who need ii.
The Joiirne}' Group which has come out of FTB is continiiing and has 9 members, including one person who did
the Alpha course. We have done a very adapted version of the DISCIPLE course recently to meet our member's
needs. Th¢y are honest: questioning and want to s¢e hom. faith ¢an be dowi to ¢arth in their 0￿1 lives.
This has been an eveiitful year for us after 14 years, but we are grateful that the group God started continues to
foster comTniinity' in Ladybrook and even fiinher afield with His help.

Food Hub
St John's Centre Food Hub runs a food club every Tuesday aftemoon. lis members come along and purchase a
bag of food for £4.00. This food comes to us from a charity called Fairshare and is surplus food which w'ould
othenvise go io waste. The bag is different every week. but usually includes fresh fruit. vegeiables, meat. dairy
items, bread, breakfast cereals, ready meals and much more. The bag is usually worth £12 £15 at supermarket
prices.
We have a large number of members, but there is a group of 20 - 30 who come most weeks. They are a mixed
group, some are in paid ￿ork, some are single, some hawe children, they are a wide mix of ages. Everyone is
I￿elCome. and ive don t judge people. It has been a joy to get to know these people. Many of Ihein stay for a chat
and we have been able to offer support and signpost people to get help if they need it. A niiinber of fainilies
have begun to engage with oiir church children's work and are coming along to other activities. New members
are al￿..aYS welcome.
There is a team of 7-8 people who mak¢ this possible. It's hard work, but they ¢njoy what they do, and know that
it mak¢s a difference to our members.
We are looking forward to seeing the Food Hub grow and develop as we move towards opening a community
cdfé.
Mission Support

month. at 2pm until i.JOpm in St John's Ceiitre. The nieeting is open to all who wish to join in fellowship..

pray for the mission but couldn't attend re(Tular meetii)gs to join us ii) prayer by email. The list has now growi) to
over 25 and we encourage others to Inake contact to receive mission related new'sletters. Where appropriate
mission newsletters are emailed out with the weekly church bulletin and copies prii)ted foi Ihose who prefer
paper copies. MSQt is responsible for allocating 5 /0 of our planned budget income to supporr Christian outreach
and charities ivorking in the UK and overseas and again this year 500/0 of income received from our annual gift
day in October 2024 was allocated to mission support. The group is al￿'ayS thankful for the sacrificial giving of
our Christian familv. both through regular giving and annual gift day donations, and we continue to give God
thanks for His provisiL)n. Through the amounts allocated to us for 2025 the Mission Support Group will be able
to maintain. and in some cases increase, monthly financial support to our mission partners. Because of the
amazing generosity at our October gift day the group will also be able to support other Christian work in our
town and projects overseas as the Lord leads. It is also hoped that MSG will be able to inviie mission partneTS to
speak at Sunday services and evening meetings throughout 2025 bringing the work of local and overseas
missions to our Christian family.

Homeless and Vulnerable
The Beacon is a prliject opemiing from the Church Hall w'hich has been providing food and practical assistance
to those w,ho are homeless, vulnerable or in need in Mansfield for more than 20 years.
The rising cost of living has meant that the need for the service has continued to rise, with an increase in
demand of roughly 400/0 over the last 12 months. The number of service users with no fixed address increased
from 71 10 100 and 220 new names were added to the list of attendees over the same period. Sadly. we are
aware of at least 10 service users w'ho died during ?024, and we were able to host -celebration of life, events for
two of them.
The manager and assistant manager have continued to work tirelessly to grow and develop the sUPPOrt available.
In 2024 the morning early opening for food parcel collection changed from Friday to Tuesday due to greater
demand on Tuesday's. In addition to the retwular Tucsday110.30 to_pm) and Friday (12 to_pm) sessions, there
is a debt advisory session, nin by the assistant manager (supported by the Freedoin Community Project) on
Thursdays (loam to I pm) and from Novembcr to March, a Satiirday (9.iO to I1.30am) warm space. The regiilar
se%sii)n% run throughaut the year with additional %upport over the critical Christma%lNew Year period. Over 40
people M'ere setved ot] Christmas Day 20?"
food on Christmas Day and Boxing Day was provided by the
Baptist Church and 'The Red, iespectively. Similar is expected for 2024.
The nuinber using the service at any one 5es5lOlI Coiitinues to be variable but 15 regularly between 60 and 80 per
session. Around 180 unique iiidividuals and iiearly 600 meals are served per moiith, with up to 700 meals in the
winter months. The increased demand on the service continued throughout ?024 piittin¥ furtlier pressure 011 the
space available. The extensioii approved by the PCC is being pursued with an application to CRASH, the
building seivices charity, who originally converted the church hall.
The Beacon reeeives many genemus donations of food and clothing without which it would not be possible tr)
provide the service. Despite the increased deinaiid, which has stretched iesources, huinai) and financial, Ihe
service has been maintained. The service continues to benefit from a core of dedicated volunteers with several
new volunteers recruited in the last 12 months. Some are church members,. several are service users who have
stepped up to volunteer, while others share their admin, social care, advisory and other key skills amid busy
work schedules. The link, now in its third }'ear, with NL)ttingham Trent University has continued to provide
suppon through placement and work experience college students. Turnover of volunteers provides challenges in
keeping pace with safeguarding requirements and delays with the DBS check process for those working with
vulnerable adults has been a particular frustration.
The Beacon Committee has met three times in 2024 and continlles to provide linkage with the PCC and siipport
for the Tnanagement of the project. Networking links alld relations with local agencies have continued to grow
and strengthcn under the managcment team's diligence.
DrugT and alcohol related anti-social behaviour around the church retnains an issue. Relationships with the Police
and Mai)sfield District Council {MDC) are p05ltive but the zero tolerance policies within the tom￿ cei)tTe tend to
push problems out into the surrounding areas. There 15 ongoiiig engagement with Council Cominuiiity Safety
staff and the Police to address thi5. The PCC is pursuing planiiing peTmission to fence off the back of the chiirch
closing an unofficial route often freqiiented by addicts. In addition to Framem'ork and Change Grow Live
(CGL), the Beacoii works with the YMCA, and witli Tuntum, Traiisitions, Action, and Rise housin¥ aueiicies.
There is a good relatioi)ship with local NHS providers and mental health services. Staff Iroin these agencies
regularly attend Beacon service sessions. However, MDC and the DWP no longer attend in persoi) due to statT
sale¥uardii)g concerns and consequentl), did not renew their funding foi the debt advisory service at the end of
May. Support has been delivered remotely since September 2024. It is likely that the debt service will move to a
Wednesday In)m Jai)uary to avoid closures on Thursdays when the Beacon is used as a polling station.

The Beacon Project nom)al running costs are now over £65,000 funded substantially through local donations. In
addition to generous donations from individuals and organisations this includes local churches at Harvesi and
more widel} pre-christmas. The significani grants aw'arded at Ihe end of last year and beginning of 2024 were
spent by Iheir deadlines providing the Beacon with greatly improved kiichen. laundry. cleaning and shom'ering
facilities as ￿ell as improved energy elTiciency. Grants in 2024 included, £70.980 from the government
communities grant. £9,980 from National Grid, £6.000 from the Jones 1986 trust, £?,000 from John EaSt￿OOd
foundation. £1750 from Thoresby Estates and £700 from various councillors, budgets. The Beacon Project has
again ventured into Crowdfunding with match funding from the Co-op. The Beacon will also benefit from an
expected substsntial legacy.
The reserve policy of this restricted Beacon Project fund is that it has enough money in the bank to run for the
upcoming year and on 31 st December 2024, the fvnd had achieved this tsrget. A portion of this sum is now
invcstcd in a savings account.
Families, Youth & Children's Work
We have welcomed Lou Bennet to our team as a family and children's worker, Lou has been supporting the
family and children s leader in building team5 and exploTing how we can increase oiir provision in different
areas. Both these posts are being funded by a wnt froin the Diocese. Throll￿OUt the year we have engaued
with children and young people in many ways.
Little Sparklers continues to pn)vide a great opportunity foi those with babies and toddlers to come and be part
of a Christian toddlei ¥roup on Monday afternoons, we Changed the time to start earlier so that people could stay

could spend time debriefing and praying with the Sparklers team before going 10 Monday Church ai Sr Mary's.
We have stsrted another branch of Litile Sparklers which is based at Sr Augusiine's Church on a Thursday
moming. We have a committed team who ruli the sessions each week, providing breakfast. snacks and a safe
space for families to come and to hear about Jesus. One of our volunteers is registered blind and she suppons us
when she can. she also brings her guide dog who the children love. Links are also being made with The Crescent
school, we have been supporting our curate, Rev Eden Parris in an after-school club called 'Good news club,
and we have been into the school 10 do various assemblies. The children from the Crescent school have also
been into St Augustine's where we did a ￿OrkshOp with them. We have been running children's groups
alongside our l 0:30 service on J Sundays each month. The children access the topics thai are covered in the
main service in a fun and engaging way, with games and craft. On several occasions families who have been
attending baptisms have also joined us. Once per month our services are all age and children and families can
join iii all together. On the 17th of November we launched our new kids Church ￿here families can drop their
children off, stay in oiir cafeltoddler area or go to church. We have seen a few new childTeJi but continue to pray
for gromth.

We have run one off events at key points in the year such as Easter. All Saints Day, and Christmas with
activities. games. w'orship, and teaching for children. In the summer our church was part of an inter
denominational summer holiday club for around l 00 children. with members of our church volunteering in
many different roles as well as running ihe main stage and teaching activities.
Our monthly Lighthouse service caters for families with children of all ages and is usually attended by around
25 children with 20 adulis and runs on Mondays after school. We now have a family service on the other 3
Mondays after school. The numbers are few'er than the monthly Lighthouse but are quite consistent.
Relationships are being made with attending families and they also sometimes attend oiher services. We have
also had interest from one of our Miiins who would nom. like to get married it] Church and she brought her
fiance to the service to meet us. We continue to strengthen our relationships with the families by building on the
one-to-one discussions with them assisting with their spiritual and physical needs.
We are blessed i¥ith the provision of sandwiches donated to oiir ¢hurch which has proved popular with the
attending families to oiir monihly lighthouse ¢vent.
Our )iOUth ¥roup fluLtuate5 in i)umber5 but recei)tly the numbers have been around 10 and we have seen i)ew
youth Loming. We atteiided 'Fuel' a youth serviLe in Nottiii¥ham where we were on Soii¥s of Praise. The N'outh
are such a blessing and are eager to hear more about God and deepen their faith.
We a150 continue to run a Film Club once a inoiith, early on a Thursday evening run by a PCC member and her
team.
We continue to work with the unifomjed seetions (Scouts, guides etc). About JO children and leaders came to
the remembrai)ce service this year includii)g a new section called squirrels whose leadeis come to our weekly
Monday Church at St Mary's. The leaLleis are keen tts woik with us and we are looking forward to coi)tinuing to
work with Ihem throughout 2025.
Being based at the St John's centre has been a blessing especially in providing opportunities for outreach. It has
enabled the Children's Worker to share with and signpost people to the many things that are going on. Food hub
has been such an amazing opportuniry flir outreach also L)ver the past year, enabling relationships to be built
with the many families who come. Links have also been made ￿1th some of the ￿oMen and children from the
refuge providing nappies and sandwiches or just being a friendly face who they can talk to. From this many
have come to Little Sparklers, Lighthouse, The Good Fridav Easier event, family fun day and our youth group,
one family made St John's their home Church and attended most weeks iintil moving areas. The family
broadcast on WhatsApp has continued to be a great way to keep in touch with families infomiing them about
church lif¢.
We have been blessed by SaTnworth Brother5 generou51y providing hundreds of sandwiches for us to give out at
LibFhthouse ai)d other event5. These sandwiche5 have fed so tna]iJ' familie5 and we encourabTe thein to take them
home to feed their faniilies throllghoiit the week. None are wasted, the ones that are left go to the clients in the
centre and the service users at the Beacon.
In June we had our family fun da), in St John s Grouiids, it M'as an aTnazin¥ day full of free activities, afternoo

harvest and Christmas. Our family and children's leader has also been in the privileged position of being invited
into school to attend various multi agency meetings to support a Mum and child who we have been building
relationships with.

Eco Church
Having achieved and celebrated a bronze Eeo Church award iii the A Rocha UK scheme the focus in ?024 has
been on maintaining this status. Using data from a 2022 Energy Footprint T(iol (EFT) Sllbmission St Johi)'s ivas
liS￿d in 2024 among the top 000 highest carbon emitting churches in the country. This has made us eligible for
a church decarbonisation grant of £3000 for which our application is in preparation. An energy audit carried out
for the diocese by ESOS-Energy in January also made recommendaiions on hoiv the parish could improve lis
energy efficiency. This, along with issues of dog fouling and anti-social behaviour in the grounds of St John's,
helps to illustrate the ongoing challenge L)f maintaining this award. A Rocha recently released an updated
version of their Eco Church survey, and we plan to participate in 2025.
Fabrie Report
Repairs 10 the St John's To￿,er spiral staircase, together with improved lighting and signage, enabled Spire
inspections to recommence. During one inspection it was identified that a section of the Tower parapet had
become uiisafe and required urgent repair which was repaired iii the summer. The serviceability of thc boilers at
both churches continues to be under r¢view. Althoiigh improvements have been made to the gas supply, the
heating at St Ji)hn's church now relies on a single boiler which is over 20-year-old, for which Spare parts are no
longer available. It has IoT]g been the intention that St John's would be re-ordcrcd at some point and with the
work required on the Spire and now the Tower, heating and other w'ork identified in the 2022 Qiiinqueiinial
inspection. a major project is needed to secure the iitility of the biiildinL for the future. A job specificatioii has

At St Mary's the new drainpipe had been sealed aiid an indicative quote had beei) obtained for re-PUttyin¥ the
¥alvani5ed wiiidows. Repaintinu of tlie chiirch doors had been funded by a ¥enerous donor and a quote liad been

which are specially Inade. needing replacement. St Mary's is due for Quii)queni)ial inspection ii) 2025. Starting

Finallcial review
A General Fund balanced budget (£130k) was set flir 2024 which included nearly £2,000 carried over from the
previous year. Plgnned giving {£72k) was cglculated after receiving the returned annual promise forms that were
sent out to the congregation in October 2023.
The General Fund outtllm for 2024 saw that our income was just over £24.5k more than we spent (£161.9K-
£137.4K). Overall. in 2024 the General Fund received iiearl}' £32K more than expected but spent over £7k more
than th¢ original biidget. The ¢xtra income over budget was du¢ to in¢reas¢s in giving, iiicluding gift aid, and an

Policy on reserves
The charity had a policy some years ago stating thai the restricted Fabric Fund should contain at least £20.000 in
order to deal with unexpected church building maintenance. How'ever during late 2017 due to emergency safety
repairs to the toiver and steeple of Si John's Church the amount in the fabric fund had fallen below this figure
and now has been completely exhausted. With Ihis in mind. in 2018 a new designated fund was created called
the St Johns steeple and tower fund as more major repairs 10 the tower and steeple will be required in the
coming years. Since 2018 individual giving, to siipport the steeple and tower fund, has taken place. The fund at
year end has been exhausted due to the emergency repairs in the slimmer of 20?4. Steeple inspertion% required
by oiir ar¢hitert in conjllnction with the structllral engineer Continue to be undertaken and costs will now be met
b) funds in our General Fund if donations 10 the steeple fund during 2025 are not enough to cover the costs. The
unrestTlCted General Fund generallj. has a minimal carry over at financial year end. However, it was nearly
'enty-five thousand pounds this year because of the unexpected legacy in 2024. A balanced budget has been
set for the forthcoining year utilising this caTry'over.
