Ouseburn Farm Charity Limited- DRAFr
Chairman's Statement
It is with great pride and affection that I present this reFKJrt for the year ending March 2025. As this marks
the end of My six-year tem as Chair of the Board of Trustees. I would like to reflect on a year of notable
progress. thoughtful change. and increasing resilience at Ousebum Fami.
One of the most significant developments this year was the appointment of Katie Bales as Farm Business
Manager. Katie has brought 8 wealth of knowledge, strong community ties. and decisive leadership to the
role. Her contribution has been instrumental in slabilising the organisalion financially, securing a rnodesl
surplus in what was. al times. a very challenging year. and in advancing plans for future growth and
expansion.
We also welcomed new pemianent staff members. including Ruari and Anna, whose energy and
dedication have strengthened the team and helped ensure smooth daY-l￿daY operations. The Board is
especially grateful for their role in delivering high-q4Jalily services and SUPFXJrting good govemance. The
fami also participated in the New Start programme, offering paid placements lo individuals looking lo
develop their careers. This opportunrty provided real-life wod( experience and meaningful support for
people seeking to build new path5 for themsefves. and reflects our continuing commf(ment to social
impact.
Our placement programrne for adult5 leaming disabilities remains at the heart of what we do. Over
the past year. participants have engaged in a wde variety of projects including the Growing Together
gardening programme. workshops in personal and life skills. sessions focused on well-being, perfomiing
arts and animal health. and a residential trip to Keswick. The launch of a new football club also provided a
valuable opportunity for (x)nfIden￿-bUibylng and soryal inclusion. 11 is always a joy to witnes5 the
enthusiasm, laughter and leaming that these pla￿mentS generate. We know there is growing demand for
this work across the Tyne and Wear region, and we are well-p0511ioned to meet that need.
Volunteering continues lo be one of the most remarkatAe aspects of lrfe at the fami. In tol81, 306
volunteers contributed 9.694 hours over the course of the year. The financial equivalent of this
contribution exceeds £116,000, but its true value lies far beyond what can be quantified. Thi5 year also
saw the introduction of a Supported Volunteering pilot and new ro￿5 such as a Sustainability Volunteer.
We remain immensely grateful to all who give their time, skill and passion so generously. Special thanks
go to Sarah, ensures that all our vdunteers are supported. valued and safe.
Cotlaboralion with other organisations remains key to cAJr approach. Ourjoint initiative with Smile For Lrfe
and Café Beam continue5 to thTive. making ex￿lIent use of homegrown produce and providing
vocational opportunities for young people sMth disabilities. We've also deepened our work around
sustainability and environmental stewardship. supported by Green Street and our involvement in the
Nature Networks project lo improve biodiver5ty in the ￿chard. Partnerships Wth IcKal organisations such
as Wild Intrigue have helped bring educational and inspiring events tts the fam). arsd our marketing
collaboration with Metro Trains has helped raise awareness and increase vi5ttor numbers.
The relationship with Tyne Housing remains a (XFtical part of our operating model. This year saw
improvements to the sile. including the replacement of the balcony. and continued collaboration in areas
such as governance and back-office support. Tyne Housing also provides services for residents that
complement our core offer. Athough Tyne holds certain designated funds for the fami, il remains the duty
of the Board of Trustees lo strive towards a financial suWus each year, a task that grows increasingly
challenging in the fa￿ of rising costs.
The farm's role in the wider ci)mmunity goes far beyond its physical footprint. There is an atrmosphere
here, warm, inclusive and welcoming, that visitors feel the moment they arrive. This year, the site felt
more productive and well cared for than ever before. We have hosted a wide range of events. from art
exhibitions by local painters lo hundred5 of activities for children and young people. Public celebrations
such as the Ousebum Festival. the Winter Lighl-up and our participation in the Late Shows brought in
new audien￿$ and reconnected us with familiar faces. School vistts continue to play a vital role in our
educational work.

Ouseburn Farm Charity Limited - DRAFT
Chairman's Statement
None of this would be possible wilhoul the generosity of our supporters. We are deeply grateful lo all who
contribute, whether through public donations. particularly the outpouring of support following the theft of
our chickens, or through corporate partne￿hIpS wtlh businesses including Sage. Gentian. North
Standard, One Utility Bill and Steding and Marks & Spencer.
We also extend sincere thanks lo our grant funders: The National Lottery Community Fund, Garfield
Weston Foundation, Hospital of God, Reece Foundation. Community Foundation, BA Community Fund,
Bally Thomas Charitable Fund, Barbour Foundation, Archer Trust. Sir James Knott Trust, North of Tyne
Combined Authority, 1989 Willan Charitable TnJsl, CLA Charitable Trust, Newcastle City Council - Green
Street, MILA Charitable Organisalion. and King Charle5 111 Charitsble Fund. The combined effort5 of
these supporters provide a vital foundation for our work, and any reduction in their invotvemenl would
place the charity under significant pressure.
From a govemance perspective. the Board has continued to strengthen its systems and oversight. The
financial year closed wlh a sfftall but welcome surplus, reflecting careful stewardship and proactive
planning. Policies around safeguarding, infection control. and risk rnanagement have been reviewed and
iThproved lo ensure that the charity is fully rneeling rts responsibilities in a modem care farming context.
Trustee recruitment and development have also progressed. with improvements to board induction and
skills mapping to support a well-rounded and effeelive team.
As I step down from my role as Chair. I do so wth gralttude, pride. and fvll confidence in the future of the
organisalion. Over the past six years. the fam has been slress4ested in more ways than we could have
imagined, bul it has emerged stronger, more credible. and more impactful. l extend my sincere thanks lo
my fellow Iru51ees, the fami team, our partner5 and our wder community for making this possible. I hope
you share my pride in what has been achieved during the past year.
