North Breckland Youth for Christ - Trustees’ Report and Financial Statements to 31[st] Aug 2025
Director’s Summary
I was appointed as Director in the October of this reporting year, after having previously worked as a youthworker. We endeavour to keep doing what we can to serve the young people in the North Breckland area. With the support of a team of 5 volunteers we have been able to keep running our youth cafes, The Space, in Barnham Broom and Garvestone. At Barnham Broom we had a new cohort of year 6 students attend, although, we lost contact with the group that had just started year 7. The dynamics of the group changed as we had to start building the relationship with the Young people from scratch. They soon settled in, and remain a lively group. At Garvestone our attendees have changed little, although we had a new cohort of year 6 pupils start coming from two local primary schools. The relationships that we have built with the young people have meant that they are more able to ask questions, and do enjoy coming. We had some feedback from one family regarding the group. They have said “Youth café has left a big impact on my life… if youth café didn’t exist I wouldn’t be where I was now” and “it wouldn’t have made me as confident as what I am now and I wouldn’t have got to meet new people and friends.” Their parent added “youth café is a right of passage, something special they can do. As a rural community it affords the children a level of freedom, and the ability to form connections they wouldn’t necessarily make at school.”
Both of these groups benefit from the consoles, board games and craft equipment, and make use of the tuck shop.
Whilst there is only one member of staff we have been unable to expand what we do, to add further relationship building and activity, but we look to be able to offer more after school groups and Saturday Space events in the future.
An area where we do get busy is with our support for Northgate High School with financial awareness lessons, using the Christians Against Poverty (CAP) material. This May saw us do 21 lessons (14 for year 7 classes and 7 for year 10) helping them understand budgeting and income. We are also fortunate to be able to go in to Neatherd High School once a fortnight, in partnership with the local Anglican Schools worker to run a Space lunch club. We can see the whole classroom filled with students, who probably come for the doughnuts, but often stay for a game and a chat. We occasionally have a question of the week to get the young people thinking. They can be as serious as “what is the best flavour of crisp?” or “Do you feel hopeful?”
This next year we look forward to seeing how we can continue to support the young people of the North Breckland area.
