The main activity of the charity is the advancement of Jewish religious education and education. Generally, seminars are primarily held at the Gesher centre in Gateshead. The centre is a fully equipped residential facility situated within the heart of the historic Gateshead Jewish community. It has dedicated Study and Games rooms, ensuring a physically comfortable and pleasant stay. During the course of a busy weekend, participants also have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of recreational activities, in which they have a chance to
connect with each other and youth leaders in a relaxed and informal environment. Visits to historical sites in the North East are a regular and popular feature of the seminars.
Following the conclusion of an action-packed weekend, Gesher field workers visit the participants’ school on a bi-weekly basis, meeting up with all the teenagers who attended. Regular ‘mini- reunions’ are held at various locations in London and surrounding areas.
An additional facet of the charity’s work is to facilitate weekend programmes for a wide range of adult groups. These include young professionals, university students, and families from around the UK.
The charity tracks the number of attendees at its programmes, and also conducts feedback and evaluation exercises after its events. This is in order to assess participant response, evaluate Gesher’s performance and to enable it to continue to tailor programmes and events to ensure that they will have the maximum public benefit.

BRIDGING “FROM WITHIN”
As was detailed in last year’s annual report, following a call from the local community, Gesher has equipped its centre to be able to be used as a ‘community hub’ for struggling youth in need of additional support. This was especially required during the depths of Covid 19, during which time the attendees primarily used the recreational part of the centre once limited gatherings were sanctioned. For many it became a locally based, ‘home away from home’ in a Covid secure setting where they benefitted from social contact and mutual support.
In addition, the meeting rooms at Gesher were made available for professionally accredited therapists to engage in numerous confidential sessions with young people from within the community. Due to the intense value of these sessions during the pandemic, Gesher made a policy decision to make the safe spaces available at no cost, thereby mitigating significant element of the regular overhead costs of the therapy sessions.
ATTENDANCE
programs in the period from February 2020. Under the new government measures in response to the pandemic, Gesher began running virtual seminars via Zoom thereby continuing to engage with its regular attendants on a continual basis.
Participants were predominantly of secondary school age (14-18). Various University students, themselves graduates of Gesher programs joined as volunteer mentors too during this most challenging period for everyone. A series of successful follow-up mini-seminars and events were held both in London and Manchester as soon as this became possible.
FOLLOW UP STAFF
During the period, Gesher continued to employ staff based in London and Manchester whose remit it was to monitor registration and promote awareness of forthcoming virtual and residential seminars, in addition to running local follow up Gesher programs.
ADDITIONAL GROUPS
In February 2020 Gesher ran its fourth consecutive trip to the UK for secondary school students from Israel, all of whom were visiting for their first time. Gesher carefully crafted the itinerary to accommodate the “new to Gesher” cohort of participants.
Right up to the beginning of the first national lockdown of 2020, Gesher had been running a record number of scheduled residential

The young people gained tremendously from exploring British culture first hand in a cohesive and supportive atmosphere generated by our experienced staff, predominantly during their weekend visit to the North East of England.
COVID RELIEF
Gesher staff were engaged in a series of projects during the national lockdown. These projects included the provision of covid safe venues for community based events to be held in line prevailing government guidelines.
In addition, as an organization we were able to support the distribution of food packages with the support of Gateshead Council, to an excess of 140 local families who were self –isolating or faced with a variety of hardships precipitated by Covid 19.
PUBLIC BENEFIT POLICY
All activities undertaken by Gesher are for public benefit. The focus is on providing stimulating educational experiences and in this way enabling contemporary Jewish youth and the wider community from around the UK to develop a greater understanding of their shared history, rich heritage and diverse culture. In addition, the activities provide an opportunity to share with young people a sense of moral responsibility and ethical values which in turn instils a sense of pride in Jewish heritage as well as responsible citizenship in wider society.
The charity goes about achieving this objective through regular educational, social and religious weekend seminars.
We have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit when reviewing our aims and objectives and in planning our future activities.
GRANT MAKING POLICY
Grants are made to charitable institutions and organisations which accord with the objects of the charity.
VOLUNTEERS
The charity’s work was supported by 30 dedicated volunteers acting as Youth Leaders in Gateshead and as Field Workers in follow up events in London, Gateshead and surrounding areas.

3. Accounting policies (continued)
Incoming resources (continued)
- income from donations or grants is recognised when there is evidence of entitlement to the gift, receipt is probable and its amount can be measured reliably.
Resources expended
All expenditure is included on an accruals basis and is recognised when there is a legal or constructive obligation to pay for expenditure.
Expenditure also includes any VAT which cannot be fully recovered and is reported as part of the expenditure to which it relates.
Governance costs are included on an accruals basis and are recognised when there is a legal or constructive obligation to pay for expenditure.
Tangible assets
Tangible assets are initially recorded at cost, and subsequently stated at cost less any accumulated depreciation and impairment losses. Any tangible assets carried at revalued amounts are recorded at the fair value at the date of revaluation less any subsequent accumulated depreciation and subsequent accumulated impairment losses.
An increase in the carrying amount of an asset as a result of a revaluation, is recognised in other recognised gains and losses, unless it reverses a charge for impairment that has previously been recognised as expenditure within the statement of financial activities. A decrease in the carrying amount of an asset as a result of revaluation, is recognised in other recognised gains and losses, except to which it offsets any previous revaluation gain, in which case the loss is shown within other recognised gains and losses on the statement of financial activities.
Depreciation
Depreciation is calculated so as to write off the cost or valuation of an asset, less its residual value, over the useful economic life of that asset as follows:
| Freehold Property | - | 1% straight line |
|---|---|---|
| Eqiupment | - | 25% reducing balance |
Defined contribution plans
Contributions to defined contribution plans are recognised as an expense in the period in which the related service is provided. Prepaid contributions are recognised as an asset to the extent that the prepayment will lead to a reduction in future payments or a cash refund.
When contributions are not expected to be settled wholly within 12 months of the end of the reporting date in which the employees render the related service, the liability is measured on a discounted present value basis. The unwinding of the discount is recognised as an expense in the period in which it arises.
