3rd Hanworth Scout Group Annual General Meeng 2023

Welcome!

Welcome to our 2023 Annual General Meeting.

This AGM is reviewing the year 2022.

It quickly became clear that 2022 was going to be a very positive year with approval to open our first Squirrel Drey and plans across all the sections to deliver a wide range of exciting activities and events.

In the following pages you will see reports from our Section Leaders, many of whom you will also hear from during the meeting today. We are very lucky at 3rd Hanworth Scout Group to have an amazing team of dedicated volunteers.

Have you ever thought of volunteering? Could you help us at 3[rd] Hanworth – we are always looking for adults and young leaders to work with our sections.

With 8 sections we are putting lots of pressure on our leaders and it would be great if a few more people could come forward to help run our busy programmes.

We also need people to work in the background – could you help keep our outdoor spaces tidy? Could you help clean or maintain our HQ? Do you have a flair for fund raising?

As the group continues to grow, we are always in need of more adult volunteers. If you are interested in getting involved, please talk to us today, or contact us by email – there is a role for everyone!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every person who supports 3rd Hanworth Scout Group. Whether you’re the parent who picks up and drops off, the young leader who spends their evenings thinking up new ideas, the Section Leader who spends hours planning or supporting the great activities, or the Group Executive member planning fundraising events or headquarters maintenance, we couldn’t do what we do without you!

Yours in Scouting,

Andrew Griffiths Chris Bryenton Group Scout Leader Deputy Group Scout Leader

2023 AGM : Governance Changes Proposals

Over the last year the Scout Associaon has made some changes to its Policy, Organisaon and Rules about how groups are run. The most obvious part of this is the change of name of the “Group Execuve” which will now become the “Trustee Board”

Therefore at this meeng we are required to agree a number of formal statements which will become 3[rd] Hanworth rules moving forward.

1) To adopt the model constitution from Policy, Organisation and Rules

In line with the recommendation from Scout Headquarters. We propose that 3[rd] Hanworth adopt the model constitution from Chapter 5 of Policy, Organisation and Rules.

Copies of this can be found here: https://www.scouts.org.uk/por/

The 3[rd] Hanworth Scout Council must agree at its AGM the number of people that can be elected to the Trustee Board. The recommendation from the outgoing Trustee Board is that 6 people can be elected.

It should be noted that the above only applies to elected members. The Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, GSL, DGSL are ex officio members of the trustee board. Any secon leader who agrees to be a

4) Agree the quorum for each of the Group Scout Council (including this AGM), meetings of the Group Trustee Board, meetings of any sub-committees

The Group Scout Council must agree at its AGM the quorum – the minimum number of Group Scout Council members that must be present at a meeting of the Group Scout Council. The recommendation from the outgoing Trustee Board is that the quorum should be set at 15 persons. The Group Scout Council is asked to approve that recommendation.

The Group Scout Council must agree at its AGM the quorum for Trustee Board meetings, and any sub-committee meetings. The Charity Commission statement of good practice is that the Trustee Board quorum should be set at one third of Trustee Board members plus one and that the that the sub-committee quorum should be set at one third of Trustee Board members plus one. The recommendation from the outgoing Trustee Board is that the quorum should be set the Charity Commission good practice statement. The Group Scout Council is asked to approve that recommendation.

GSL Review of 2022 2022 will be remembered at 3, Hanworth for the opening of the first Squirrel Drey at 3, Hanworth. Squirrel Scouts is a new age group for Scouting, allowing for the first time 4- and 5-year-olds to be partof the fun. In the Scouting world there was a lot of negativity about the opening of the Squirrel Section. We were extremely excited to get involved and our experience is without question how fantastic it can We took the decision early on that we would run Squirrels in the traditional style, where parents leave their child at the door returning an hour later. I was keen to follow this style as we do not want the young people to see 3 Hanworth as a place that they go with their parent, it should be a place to have amazing experiences which they can tell mum and dad about later. It is also great to build their confidence for their future scouting adventures. 3, Hanworth was the fi.rst group in Thameside Grand Union to open a Squirrel Section. lo" Feltham are opening their Squirrels in September 2023 and we hope others will follow in the future. It is great to see the squirrels fully engaged in their activities and they have proved quite able to join in with other sections, quite able to cope with going out on trips and although it is not in the year we are reporting today, they have even held their first sleepover which was a fantastic experience for all. In March we welcomed our County Commissioner, Richard Williams and District Commissioners to our first investiture which was a very memorable event. Another first for 2022 was a Beaver Camp. Beavers have done many indoor sleepovers over the years, but to camp, in tents, for a whole weekend was a first. l am sure this will be the first of many. Cubs and Scouts have both had fantastic years. I will leave the section leaders to report in more detail on the activitt.es for the sectt"ons. However, l am immensely proud of the programme that 3 Hanworth has offered over the year. At the end of the year, Pat Rehm retired from the role of Cub Scout Leader after 16 years of outstanding service as Cub Scout Leader. Hundreds of young people have benefited from Pays calm and reassuring presence at cubs over the last 20 years. Pat continues to be involved in the group as a member of the trustee board. Thank you to Pat for everything she has done for Cubs at 3, As GSL I can use this report to look forward as well as back and this is equally as exciting. Firstly, to talk about something that has already happened- the opening of the Hanworth- or, as I should call them, Stealth Explorer Scouts @3, Hanworth. Hanworth Explorers closed around 5 years ago and during this period, we have lost many young people when they reached the age of 14 and had to leave Scouts. There was a significant reluctance to travel to Feltham Explorers, although the details were always provided. Explorer Scouts, the 14-18 age group for Scouting is a district provision rather than managed by the Scout Group. However Stealth Explorers are very much part of the 3, Hanworth Family. The opening of Explorers means that we can now offer the full Scouting journey for young people from the age of 4 to 18 and we hope that we will retain most of our young people through to their 18 Birthday and perhaps many more years as leaders. As a Scout Group, we have grown enormously in the last few years. We currently have 180 Youth Members which is unbelievable, historically we used to have 60 or 70 members. Add to that the Explorer Scouts and we have nearly 200 youth members taking part in activities every week during the term time.

While l am clear that membership numbers are not everything - I hope that it confirms that we are doing something right. A group of this size does require quite a lot of work to run. With camps, trips out and much more going on, not to mention a joining list which at times has had more than 50 people waiting to join, there is always something to do. I could not manage this without the support of Chris, who as Deputy Group Scout Leader is amazing support. In 2024 we will be holding our first Group Camp. This will see all sections involved in 3 3, Hanworth event at Paccar Scout Camp. We hope that this will be a huge event which will be part of our celebrations for 70 Years of Scouting at 3, Hanworth. Alongside running the group, we also must manage and look after our HQ and site. This takes time and we are incredibly grateful for the support of parents at our work parties. Have you ever thought of volunteering? We are always looking for new adults to be involved in our sections we also have other roles which do not involve working with young people. Please do talk to Chris or myself if you are interested. As ever the end of my report is about thanking everyone involved at 3, Hanworth. I will not try to name them as there is so many people involved now. We have an outstanding team of leaders, young leaders, helpers and assistants and I want to say a huge thank you to them. Thank you to all the parents for their support of the group and finally a huge thank you to all the young people. Andrew Griffiths Group Scout Leader Tl

3 Hanworth Scout Troop Report 2022 Having opened the second Scout Troop in the Autumn of 2021 we started 2022 looking forward to a hopefully covid free year and the opportunity to give Scouting adventures to close to 50 Scouts. We started the year with Freezer camp which was a joint event with IO, Feltham due to many of our own leaders being part of the Paccar Event team. This time the Scouts camped outdoors, all had a great time. Our next camp was a back-to-basics survival style camp. For this camp its all about skills. Cooking on open fires, building shelters, which some even slept in. It was another great weekend. At the end of July, we were delighted to be invited to attend the Surrey County Camp, ScoutAbout. This is one of the biggest weekend events in the UK with over 5,000 Scouts and Guides. This was one of 3, Hanworth's biggest camps ever Iso big, we needed a full-size coach), with 40 Scouts and around 15 adults, some of whom were there to operate our activity- the railway. It was again an amazing weekend with over 250 activities on site and we very much hope that we will be invited again in 2024. Summer Camp was held in South Wales, this with the use of a building for cooking and eating, 17 Scouts. There was a busy programme which ranged from cooking on open fire, to visiting Oakwood Theme Park and the coal mining museum, Big Pitt. Time was also spent at the Beach, where Graham visited to run a climbing session. Other highlights included swimming and dry slope skiing. During the Autumn term we held an autumn camp at 3 Hanworth. The main activity was a trip to London to complete a monopoly challenge- with some groups walking 12 miles as part of this, it was a fantastic day out. 14 nights away, many miles travelled and a great deal of fun for all. Away from the camps, there was the normal nights out, Swimming, Laser Quest and Ice Skating to name a few. In the Summer Term we spent 3 nights at Bedfont Lakes with the Scouts enjoying "time on the water" Canoeing and Kayaking under the instruction of William and Daniel. We saved the best trip until last, in December we took a coach load to the Prince Edward Theatre to see the amazing production of "Mary Poppins" Over 30 Scouts and a large group of leaders made for a memorable end to the year. Watch out for more Theatre Opportunities for 3, Hanworth- including parentsl One thing we have not yet achieved is naming our Scout Troops- we are desperate to get away from "Wednesdav, and 'Yhursday" troops. If anyone has any ideas on what we should call the troops, please do let us know. We cannot buy the new flag until we decidel Its been a great year for the Scout Troops and this would not have been possible without our team of volunteer leaders. The commitment from the team is amazing- covering two troop nights a week along with camps, trips and all the planning is a huge commitment. On behalf of the Scouts a huge Thank you to all the leaders for making 3, Hanworth Scouts amazing. Andrew Griffiths Group Scout Leader

Panther Cubs 2022 Report

We began the year with 26 Cubs on the register. During January, we held Pack Forums. Cubs discussed a variety of subjects, such as different activities they would like to try and expectations of behaviour. For National Inventing Day, we used our electricity kits to make various circuits and also made hot air balloons.

On National Belly Laugh Day we enjoyed sharing jokes with each other. At the end of the month we ran a pack night ‘backwards’. Very challenging and lots of fun!

In February, we celebrated Chinese New Year by making dragons and eating prawn crackers. Then for the start of Lent, Cubs cooked and ate their own pancakes. We continued to work on the Science badge by investigating densities of various liquids; dissolving different solids and then completed the badge by making towers using spaghetti and marshmallows.

In March during Book Week, Cubs brought in a favourite book and shared those stories with each other. For St.Patrick’s Day we learnt about his life, played a game of rescuing treasure from a ‘pond’ and then coloured cut - outs of hands in the rainbow colours to then display in the shape of a rainbow on our notice board.

In preparation for Mother’s Day, we talked about why it is celebrated. Then as a present, Cubs decorated gingerbread people and put them into gift boxes they had previously made. They then made chocolate crispy cakes with mini eggs inside as presents to share with their families for Easter. In April we played many different games.

May was to be a very special month… To begin with we completed the Road Safety badge. Then, as it was the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Cubs designed and made, out of air - drying clay, a coin or a medal. These were then painted and we finished with cake and a toast to the Queen!

During June, Cubs made paper rockets and used water pressure to launch them. For a Wimbledon tennis evening we played a range of ball sports and finished with refreshing ice lollies. To finish the term in July, we made rope by using toilet rolls and continued with the Pioneering badge. Finally, we met with Ocelot Cubs for our popular water games evening.

Returning for the Autumn term was tinged with sadness after the death of our Queen. Queen Elizabeth II was our Patron, so we all talked about her amazing life, then went outside to stand at our flagpole to join in with the ‘Clap for our Queen’.

October was a very busy month. We completed a night hike, with the Cubs solving many clues to find the route. We had a visit by ‘Rodney’ a horse. Cubs talked with his owner about looking after him, fed him carrots and learnt about the ‘Points of a horse’ and names of the parts of a saddle and bridle.

On a halloween themed evening, Cubs bobbed for apples, ate hanging donuts and made spooky mocktails to drink. In preparation for Remembrance, Cubs coloured and cut out poppies for their wreath.

Over the weekend of 21st to 23rd October, eleven Panther Cubs came together with Ocelot Cubs for a camp at Paccar. They took part in many activities such as wall climbing, archery, zip - wires and camp fire.

In November we celebrated the birthday of our new King, Charles III. In small groups, Cubs were given ingredients and instructions for cake making. They then had to complete the task, decorate the cakes and enjoy eating them!

9

At the Hanworth Remembrance Day Parade, 16 Panther Cubs joined with many other members of our group, to lay our wreath and crosses. On another evening, Cubs were given the task of using glow sticks to sticky tape to themselves in the shape of their skeletons. The lights were turned off and the dancing began, they looked spectacular!

At the end of November, we met with Ocelot Cubs for a camp fire evening of singing and marshmallow toasting.

During December, 14 Panther Cubs took part in the Feltham cluster Christingle service at St.Richard’s church. We joined with many others at the popular Santa Special at Mizen’s railway. Even though it was absolutely freezing (-5 I believe), riding on the little steam train through the frosty woods was magical!

Finally, 19 Panther Cubs met with other 3rd Hanworth Squirrels and Ocelot Cubs at Snakes and Ladders for our end of term get - together. After enjoying the play equipment, everyone sat down to enjoy party food.

What an amazing year we have had and many, many thanks go to all the Leaders for their continuing hard work to make it all come together.

A very BIG ‘THANK YOU’ must go to Rama who retired at the end of the summer term. Because of his amazing enthusiasm and wonderful ideas, the program that was delivered to the Cubs was a continuous joy.

So, deciding to retire at the end of the year myself, this is my last report. I have thoroughly enjoyed over 30 years with all the hundreds of young people, being able to experience so many different activities that I certainly would not have otherwise had.

I wish Ben, the next Panther Cub Leader, all the best. Good Luck, I’m sure you will enjoy it as much as I have!

Ocelot Cubs AGM report

What another busy year it has been for Ocelot Cubs . We started the year with our usual games night, which I’m sure the Cubs enjoy. We had a backwards night, where we ended the cub meeting at the beginning and the beginning at the end. We also celebrated Chinese new year by making dragons using paper and straws, we also enjoyed prawn crackers. We have also made and eaten pancakes, shared books on world book day and made easter nest.

We started a new term putting up tents and did camp prep ready for our joint cub camp at Paccar scout camp where the cubs did a variety of activities. We celebrated the Queens 70[th] Jubilee platinum by making and painting medals using modelling clay. We also started doing our pioneering badge.

The latter part of the term saw Ocelot Cubs have a pirate night, A small hike around our local area and a visit from a horse called Rodney. We had a glow stick skeleton party and Ocelot cubs made poppies in preparation for the remembrance service. We did a joint campfire with Panther Cubs, a Christingle service and did another cub camp where the cubs got to do ice skating, bowling and swimming. We ended the year with the group having fun at snakes and ladders.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Ocelot Cub leaders for all their help and support over the last year.

3[rd] Hanworth Tudor Beavers Report 2022

What a year 2022 has been! Tudor Beavers have had the opportunity to take part in such a wide range of wonderful activities. The start of the term in 2022 saw Tudor Beavers completing a wide range of different activities as well as celebrating a few different international holidays! The first half of the term saw us outside (yes outside in January!) cooking campfire cones and learning about the Green Cross Code as well as earning our disability awareness badge and celebrating Chinese New Year by making our own Chinese dragons. During the February half term, we were due to head to Bedfont Lakes to take part in some fun nature activities, but the weather had other ideas and unfortunately, we were not able to go. The second half of the term also saw us working towards lots of other badges such as our Book Readers Badge, our Space Badge and also our Builders Badge. We also had the chance to celebrate Pancake Day, Mother’s Day and also Easter!

With such a busy start to the term the summer term continued to pick up with more exciting activities! We learnt about different types of knots and then had the chance to take part in blindfolded biscuit tasting as part of national biscuit week. During the first half of the term we got to take part in our rescheduled trip to Bedfont Lakes. The Beavers had the chance to go pond dipping, bug hunting and also build their own woodland dens! We had a great day and luckily the weather this time was on our side, and we even had a visit from the ice cream van. The second half of the term saw us take advantage of the glorious weather as we celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee with our own street part, learnt how to put up a tent and made our own tie-dye t-shirts! We finished the term in true 3[rd] Hanworth tradition with a water games night.

The end of the summer term saw Tudor and Windsor Beavers take part in a milestone moment with the first Beaver outdoor camp! 19 Beavers and lots of excited Leader’s head to Paccar Scout Camp for a whole weekend. We had the chance to take part in a lot of exciting activities such as learning how to make woggles out of paracord, facing our fears on the Climbing Wall and flying through the trees on the Zip Wire. The Beavers also had the opportunity to take part in some traditional camping fun by having the chance to sit and sing songs around the campfire. It was such a wonderful weekend full of new experiences for everyone for a large number of the young people it was their first night away from home as well as their first time sleeping in a tent. The young people were such a joy on this weekend, and I have never been prouder of how they took on each challenge.

The final term started with parents and Beavers taking part in an orienteering course at Hanworth Air Parks that was set up and organised by Windsor Beavers. The Beavers got the chance to explore the park whilst taking part in their explore badge! During the term we got the chance to look into global issues as part of our badge work as well as learning how to make pizzas and building our solar system. Coming back from half term we got the chance to take part in a joint Halloween meeting with Windsor Beavers where everyone got to put on their best Halloween outfits and take part in activities such as biscuit decorating and making our own cauldrons. We finished off the term by taking part in a Christingle service at our local church as well as our usual 3[rd] Hanworth trip to Snakes and Ladders, this year was our biggest visit yet with over 100 people attending. The final activity of the term was our Beaver Christmas sleepover where we got to take part in some different Christmas activities before

12

heading into bed to watch a Christmas film. The next day saw us joining the different Beaver and Cub groups from the district to go and visit Santa at Mizens Railway.

It has been a whirlwind of a year for Tudor Beavers with a crazy 174 badges awarded throughout the year. 2022 has been full of a lot of adventures and 2023 is already shaping up to be another great year. Tudor Beavers wouldn’t be where they are or have the chance to take part in all of these amazing activities without the help of all of the Leaders who give up their time so a massive thank you to everyone who has helped out at Tudor Beavers in 2022.

Windsor Beavers 2022

178 badges awarded were awarded and a brilliant 4 of those were well earned bronze awards!

We celebrated and learnt more about Chinese new year, world book day, pride, Halloween and remembrance with different activities, crafts and fancy dress.

Throughout the year we learnt about space and different constellations, knots, campfire songs, ways to be safe in different situations. We have cooked all sorts of things from pancakes to biscuits to fruit salads and smoothies and they were all delish!

Tie dye in the rain and science displays filled some of our evenings and not forgetting all the Christmas themed craft and fun we’ve had!

We of course enjoyed all our trips and camps through the year! Snakes and ladders is a constant favorite along with Santa special! We also held a fun-filled weekend under canvas which was filled with amazing activities everyone enjoyed!

I personally want to thank all my brilliant assistant leaders! We couldn’t do this with them! And an extra congratulations to Ben for completing all his training and stepping into a cub leader role alongside his Beaver filled evenings!
