## **Welcome!**

## **Welcome to our 2021 Annual General Meeting.**

This AGM is reviewing the year 2020, which without doubt is the strangest year that 3[rd] Hanworth has ever seen. With the group reduced to meeting online for much of the year, with little opportunity experience our normal amazing events, it’s a very different Scouting year.

It has been a year which has challenged everyone not least our leaders who give up their time in such difficult circumstances to keep 3[rd] Hanworth running, albeit online, and this was amazing. Many of our leaders have many years of experience of running normal Scouting programmes, however having to translate these programmes and produce new resources suitable for Scouting online was no easy task.

We are very luck at 3rd Hanworth Scout Group we have an amazing team of dedicated volunteers who were able to keep the group going.

Have you ever thought of volunteering? Could you help us at 3[rd] Hanworth – we are always looking for adults and young leaders to work with our sections and this will include “squirrels” the new section for 4- and 5-yearolds. We also need people to work in the background – could you help keep our outdoor spaces tidy? Could you help clean or maintain our HQ? Do you have a flair for fund raising?

As the group continues to grow, we are always in need of more adult volunteers. If you are interested in getting involved, please talk to us this evening, or contact us by email – there is a role for everyone!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every person who supports 3rd Hanworth Scout Group. Whether you’re the parent who picks up and drops off, the young leader who spends their evenings thinking up new ideas, the Section Leader who spends hours planning or supporting the great activities, or the Group Executive member planning fundraising events or headquarters maintenance, we couldn’t do what we do without you!

Yours in Scouting,

**Andrew Griffiths Chris Bryenton** Group Scout Leader Deputy Group Scout Leader

## **Tudor Beaver Colony Report 2020**

Wow! What a year 2020 has been!

We started the year with lots of activities including helicopter calendar makes, parachute games, making bird feeders and decorating them. We celebrated Chinese New Year (Rat) with Dragon mobile spirals and trying prawn crackers, and St Valentine’s Day by decorating biscuits with faces with luscious lips! We learnt about Braille and Makaton learning how to write our names in Braille and signing our names in Makaton.

We visited Pets at Home during February half term to learn how to look after various animals and their habits, we had 11 Beaver Scouts attend the session. A lovely time and lots of cuddles and information.

We had 3 Beaver Scouts and 2 Leaders attend the TGU sleepover at Winchester Science Centre at the end of February half term.

We celebrated Pancake Day with making Pancakes with the leaders from Scouts and Akela Pat (thank you). We celebrated St David’s Day with foam daffodil mosaics makes and Welsh cakes to go home. We held a fundraising evening for Sports Relief and decorated mugs for Mother’s Day which were ready for the Beaver Scouts to collect from 3rd the following week once Lockdown had begun.

We managed to keep in touch by sending a monthly email just to send good wishes and say ‘hello’. Then Zoom happened!

Our first Tudor zoom meeting was on the 1st July where we did our A-Z Scavenger Hunt and chatted with 7 Beavers; 2 Young Leaders and Jen. We had a go (Me included) at drawing a friendly alien and saying what we love about living on Earth and where we would take our friendly Alien; some very interesting ideas! We sent out “Monster Bingo” sheets for our next session and had a try at Zoom bingo. For our last session during the summer term, we did a quiz with a terrible internet connection that evening so a very big thank you to everyone for their patience and perseverance.

Our Zoom meetings continued for the autumn term with Pictionary, quizzes, International Day of Peace handprints, bug home designing, we made a cake in a mug, collecting nature items and making various builds from them, scavenger hunt in the home which finished with buttering a slice of bread with a topping of the Beaver’s choice, we made words out of items – which was great fun and very clever. We talked about Remembrance, although unable to meet for our usual parade on Remembrance Sunday. We had a scavenger hunt for things beginning with T and wore our Pyjamas for Children in Need. We did Taskmaster activities – great fun. We made pizzas, had a music quiz and Invested a Beaver Scout. We made our Christingles, had a colour quiz, and finished our evening with ‘Away in a Manager’. We celebrated Hanukah with a ‘Doughnut in a mug’ make. Our last evening saw us wearing Christmas clothes and making our Christmas mosaics which were posted out and singing our Christmas songs with a little Taskmaster activity.

Thank you to all Beavers and Leaders.

## **Windsor Beaver Colony Report 2020**

The start of 2020 was filled with excitement for Windsor Beavers, who, after opening in the summer of 2019 were looking forward to their first full year. Various events were being considered and it promised to be a great year.

The first event, which subsequently proved to be the only event of 2020 was a sleepover at the Winchester InTech Science Centre. This was a joint event with other beavers from TGU. 5 Beavers from Windsor Beavers took part.

In colony meetings we learnt about the Chinese New Year and aeroplanes, and we made calendars. Our final face to face meeting was on 12th March 2020.

No further events or meetings took place until towards the end of summer term, when we became a virtual beaver colony meeting on Zoom.

During the autumn term we met every week online and completed various activities including World Book Day activities, Lego Activities and Christmas Cards. There was also various quizzes and games.

I would like to thank all the leaders who help with Windsor Beavers during 2020 and thank the parents and beavers for their part in allowing Windsor Beavers to continue during such difficult times.

## **Panther Cub Pack Report 2020**

We began this momentous year with 17 Cubs playing various games. Pack Forum discussions were held by all to think about expectations, behaviour and the sort of activities they would like to be able to do.

For Chinese New Year, all Cubs cooked and ate noodles, played Chinese Whispers and Catch the dragon’s tail and then learnt facts about China.

At the end of January, we took part in the ‘Big bird watch’. We went out onto our field to look and listen out for any birds we may recognise. Then, back inside we made fat balls from lard and seeds to take home.

During February we held sessions for the Cubs to learn about using our air rifles, including the responsibilities that came with this activity. We did various science experiments - assembling battery circuit kits with fans to move a balloon, made paper aeroplanes, mixed coloured water with oil to find out about density and used sucker cross bows in the portacabin.

We talked about Lent, made, cooked and ate pancakes, then washed up.

March began with the painting and decorating of terracotta pots in preparation for a Mother’s Day present. Each Cub designed and made a small book about the many things they enjoyed doing at Cubs. On another evening their beautifully decorated pots were planted up with violas, a gift tag made and then all taken home.

We were due to have a sleepover at the HQ in preparation for a camp later on in the year but...then Covid changed everything.

Despite everything happening around the world we rose to the challenge! The word ‘Zoom’ had a new meaning and we embraced it!

So, in June we held our first zoom meeting

Our usual format for our zoom meetings was to welcome all, chatting to each other about anything they may have done and discussing the difficulties they were facing and trying to reassure them that we could still have fun!

One evening whilst discussing our various pets, Rama’s dog Delilah made an appearance. The next thing we all saw were dogs, cats, and a rat. Others talked about their fish and stick insects. We played Bingo, enjoyed lots of ‘Show and Tell’ of amazing constructions and various vegetables being grown!

Rama’s challenges and quizzes became weekly exciting activities.

In August we had a ‘Scavenger’ hunt. Various items had to be found, one at a time and we ended with all making a sandwich to eat!

In September we had a ‘Guess what I am’ quiz, chatted a lot and played many Rama quizzes.

During October, Rama’s challenges included - ‘Make a list of things at home beginning with W’, ‘Which cartoon character do you think you are like?’ (Rama’s was Elmer Fudd!) and wear a funny hat! We have also made origami whales and horse’s heads!

One activity that was a favourite and a great success was making (microwaving) a cake in a mug. Most made a chocolate one and they were delicious! Another successful game was to ‘spell’ out a word using items that began with each letter of that word. The Cubs were very inventive with their choices!

November began with the story of the Remembrance poppy, discussing why we have a Remembrance Day and making our own red poppies. We also found out about purple poppies (for all the animals lost in war) and the white poppy (for peace).

Akela wrote a story about a bear on a journey around London and the Cubs had to ‘Be a detective’ and answer questions on it.

Towards the end of November we were joined by two Beaver Scouts on their first night link with us.

We found out about Advent and then all made our versions of a Christingle orange. With all the candles lit or torches shining we sang ‘Away in a manger’ it was a very special moment.

In December, after the success of the cake in a mug, we made a ‘Donut in a mug’. These were just as tasty and some Cubs made them even more so by having them with cream, ice - cream or custard!

For our final zoom meeting of the year, craft packs were delivered to all. With the contents we all made, during the meeting, a wooden star hanging decoration and a CD and battery tea - light table decoration. They all looked stunning, well done to you all! With a ‘Very Happy Christmas’ said to all, we said farewell to 2020...

Thank you so much to all of you who have enabled our weekly meetings to continue to take place. There were many challenges and new ways of delivering Scouting, but we did it - WOW!

## **Ocelot Cub Pack Report 2020.**

Ocelot Cub pack started 2020 with 17 Cubs, which I think is amazing as we had only opened our 2nd Cub pack at 3rd Hanworth in September 2019.

We started the year with a game’s night. We had a tasting activity night with noodles and prawn crackers and talked about what animal we were for Chinese New Year. Ocelot cubs have made bird feeders and we talked about what birds we had seen. We have done Air rifle shooting (which I think they all enjoyed) and we had a night of science where we had to try and lift a piece of ice using only cotton and salt.

The cubs have made, cooked and eaten pancakes. Thank you, Andrew, Chris and Dan, for your help. Ocelot Cubs decorated plant pots and planted seeds for Mother’s Day. These looked amazing.

We had so much planned for this year including a joint cub sleepover and camp with Panther Cubs (which unfortunately we had to cancel) then COVID 19 hit and we had to change the way we did Scouting, a challenge we all accepted. Zoom became the new Tuesday night meeting.

Ocelot Cubs have enjoyed several activities for example…. We have made pizzas, a cake in a mug and fruit kebabs. We had a few games of bingo and Pictionary. We have done a few quizzes including a music quiz which our parents joined in with. We have also done origami, made Christingle’s and created snowflakes.

I would like to say a massive well done to all of Ocelot Cubs for being so amazing over the last year with the ‘new’ way of Scouting and coping with it so well. I would also like to say a big thank you to the Young Leaders and Leaders for all their support and hard work and I would not be able to do it without them.

## **Scout Troop Report 2020**

2020 for the Scout Troop has been very disappointing. The global pandemic meant that little happened during the year.

The year began with Freezer Camp, which was as normal a joint activity with 10[th] Feltham. Staying in the Rowallan building at Paccar 14 Scouts from each troop took part in the event. It was filled with the normal range of fun activities. Thank you to the leaders at 10[th] Feltham who enabled 3[rd] Hanworth Scouts to be part of this event.

Troop night activities during the first few weeks of the year included first aid, making pancakes and craft activities. During these meetings we averaged 22 scouts although numbers declined as the effects of covid took hold. Our final troop meeting before the pandemic closure was on 12[th] March 2020.

The next part of this report is about what “should” have happened – At Easter we planned to visit Bornemouth for a weekend which would have included activities such as visiting the Water Park in Poole and site activities at “Butchers Coppice” Camp Site.

In June we were due to be part of the Surrey Scouts “ScoutAbout” an amazing weekend of activities at the South of England Show Ground. We had 26 Scouts who had booked to be part of this fantastic event. It has been rescheduled for 2021, but it is not known if this will take place.

Our Summer Camp was due to be in South Wales including activities such as Climbing, Dry Slope Skiing, Swimming, beaches visits and a visit to a theme park.

It was so sad to have to cancel the 11 days of camping that were already planned and, no doubt more that would have been arranged for the later part of the year.

Initially we decided that we would not hold online meetings as we knew that Scouts were having to adapt to online lessons at School. We therefore took a break until the beginning of July when we were able to open our Zoom Studio at 3[rd] Hanworth.

Online meetings took place weekly during the term time including activities such as quizzes, cooking, tasks and challenges and mystery packages. These were generally attended by around half our troop.

In October we were delighted to be able to return to face-to-face meetings at the HQ. Although very different – outdoor and socially distanced, it was great to be back. It was however short lived when the second lockdown returned Scouting to “red” in November. Online meetings continued.

In November we decided that we needed to begin the process of moving young people between sections, which had been paused since March. Realising that there were 10 cubs to transfer and a few on the “external” joining list, we decided to hold some “transition meetings” to help the Cubs from the two packs get to know each other and meet all our leaders. These proved a great success using the most popular activities that the troop had already completed. In early December all the new members joined their first full Scout meeting online. This was quickly followed by a return to face-to-face meetings for two weeks in December – during this time we experimented with holding two, 1 hour meetings to allow all the Scouts to be part of them.

In December we also held an activity day at Paccar – 13 scouts took part in a very short notice event – which was a great opportunity to do some real activities outdoors.

As always, I must end by thanking everyone who has made a very 2020 a successful if different year for 3[rd] Hanworth Scout Troop.

Andrew Griffiths

## **2020 Accounts**

Our 2020 accounts are presented in a slightly different format to previous years as we have adopted the use of a new accounting package across the group. Therefore, the comparison with previous years is not shown within this booklet. 2020 had little in common with previous years due to the pandemic. If you would like to view the 2019 accounts as a comparison, please contact Andrew who will be happy to provide a copy.
