Trustees’ Report for the year ended 31 August 2021

The Trustees of Amnos Ministries (being the Trustees) present their report and the financial statements for the year ended 31 August 2021. The financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Companies Act 2006, the Memorandum and Articles of Association of Amnos Ministries, and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102).

Amnos Ministries (also referred to as the Charity) is a company limited by guarantee registered under the Companies Act 2006. It is also a charity registered with the Charity Commission.

Objectives and Principal Activities

The primary objective of Amnos Ministries is the advancement of the Christian Faith, including the provision of Christian training, education and learning.

Amnos Ministries aims to contribute to the re-evangelisation of the UK and Europe. We aim to work out this mission in four ways:

  1. By equipping church planters in the UK and in Europe,

  2. By raising awareness of the UK and Europe’s spiritual climate and encouraging prayer support for the UK and Europe,

  3. By providing Christian workers to those churches that do not have sufficient pastoral personnel,

  4. By complementing existing theological institutions with spiritual and practical input.

In 2011 we established a church planting school located at our principal premises (which is also the registered office). This is one of only a few schools of its type in the United Kingdom, seeking to provide a training resource for those called to engage in Christian church planting and church growth through proactive evangelism. The one year course comprises three terms (the full year runs from October – June) and a church-based internship over the Summer months (July – September).

The curriculum is based on four main pillars of training: spiritual, evangelism, pastoral and character training, undergirded by Biblical studies. The teaching is delivered by academic practitioners from different continents. Between them they have a wealth of experience and knowledge in church planting and evangelism initiatives.

Principal Achievements and Performance during the period

a. Amnos Church Planting School :

In light of both the prolonging COVID 19 situation and the nature of our training on church planting and pastoral ministry, we made the decision to pause the 2020-21 course, fully intending to resume when the circumstances become suitable to reopen. The nine lecturers who used to come from overseas could not plan to come due to travel restrictions and quarantine.

We focussed more on supporting the graduates in their church planting and pastoral ministries by providing them with encouragement, consultation and evangelistic

manpower. The graduates themselves share a close bond of fellowship via communications in a WhatsApp group.

b. Arise 2021

We established Arise as an international and interdenominational evangelistic programme in 2015.This campaign is now well established as an annual event, and it has been much appreciated by the sending churches, the hosting churches and the participants. For Arise 2020, we had to cancel it after planning everything ready to run from 29 June till 9 July 2020. However, for Arise 2021, we could not even plan for it as the COVID 19 situation continued.

Nevertheless, we decided to continue to provide evangelism training online every month from September 2020 until November 2021. A good number of people have been joining us online from the UK, the USA and Korea, and this training has been much appreciated. The teaching video clips are made available to the public on both our Arise website and on YouTube.

c. The Intercede Prayer Meeting :

This is a monthly prayer meeting of churches in Brentwood, Essex, which has been hosted by Amnos Ministries continually since February 2012. The distinct feature of Intercede is praying specifically for our nation, the UK. Over the current period, we have been hosting the Intercede prayer meeting via Zoom every month, and a number of people from several churches in Brentwood continue to join to pray for our nation.

d. The UK Christian Heritage Study Tour

Amnos has been hosting the Heritage Tour annually since 2013. It is a study tour for a week around various historic Christian heritage sites in England and Wales. However, we could not host this tour in 2021 because of COVID 19.

e. Inspire Bible Conference:

This is an annual programme which is designed for local Christians in Brentwood. This event runs for two or three evenings in May with a renowned guest speaker every year and has been running since 2012. Local ministers and Christians appreciate Amnos’ initiative in facilitating this excellent event, which the Trustees consider has benefited the wider Brentwood community. Again, this special event had to be cancelled due to COVID 19 in 2021.

f. Partnership with churches in Brentwood and in the UK :

Amnos Ministries has been an active member of BADEF (Brentwood Area and District Evangelical Fellowship), which is a monthly fraternal gathering of local ministers. We have been proactively engaged in the events and activities organised or supported by BADEF. However, due to COVID 19 monthly meetings and all special events which BADEF had been working together for the community, have been cancelled after March 2020.

Daniel Chae, our Executive Director, continues to serve as a member of One People Commission of the Evangelical Alliance UK since its birth in 2012.

Financial Review

During the year the Charity had incoming resources of £12,681 (2020: £67,239) all of which were unrestricted. Our income for this year has been reduced, due to not been able to run the Arise campaign because of Covid 19. At the end of the period the Charity had reserves of £374,339 (2020: £402,789). These reserves represent the balance of initial donations that were made to help set the Charity up with appropriate resources plus surpluses made since that time. The Trustees are monitoring the finances of the Charity, and believe that, at present, they are satisfactory.

Risk Management

The Trustees have identified and reviewed the major risks to which the Charity is exposed. They are satisfied that appropriate systems have been installed to mitigate those risks. They regularly review our policies and procedures.

Reserves

The year 2021 marks the 10[th] year of the Charity, and over the years it has built unrestricted reserves to a comfortable level. The current level of reserves reflects the Charity having received initial donations to help establish the work and having benefitted from further donations since then, while carefully managing its costs. The Trustees regularly consider this matter. The reserves of the Charity will ensure funding of the growth initiatives planned for the near future.

Investment Policy

It is the policy of the Trustees to invest any surplus funds in appropriate bank deposits

Plans for 2022 and Post Balance Sheet Events

a. Amnos Church Planting School .

The impact of COVID 19 worldwide has been much more significant than we initially thought, and it is still uncertain when the pandemic will be over. Our School has directly been affected by the pandemic in recruiting potential students as we could not host Open Days and conduct interviews. Furthermore, we could not run the course as our curriculum has largely been taught by visiting lecturers who would typically travel in from several different countries. As the pandemic continues, we will not be able to open the course on October 2022. The future of the School is rather uncertain as the pandemic prolongs. However, we are monitoring the situation with a strong desire to reopen the course as soon as we are able.

Under current circumstances we plan to focus on supporting our graduates and their ministries. Two graduates planted new churches in Isle of Wight in April 2021 and in Colchester in September 2021. The fact that our graduates started new churches during the pandemic is not a small achievement. Most of our graduates are engaged in pastoral and evangelistic ministries.

Our graduates studied in different years over the period of nearly ten years. Yet, most of them know each other as they meet together during the school events such as Open Days, Reunions and the Arise campaigns. We plan to continue to consolidate the partnership and friendship among the graduates. We were most encouraged to see 17-25 graduates and the Amnos family gathering via Zoom to pray for four and half weeks every evening in December 2021 and January 2022.

b. Intercede Prayer meetings

We will continue to host prayer meetings for the UK and our town via Zoom.

c. Arise 2022

We are going to run a smaller scale of the Arise campaign in June 2022 by matching sending churches and hosting churches for a shorter period of 7-8 days instead of 11day programme we had in the past. We may run 2-3 campaigns which are tailer-made for the sending and hosting churches.

We are going to resume the Inspire Conference in October 2022.

COVID-19. Our plans have been seriously disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic affecting nations across the world during the period of this report. Our activities including the Arise Programme, Intercede Prayer Meetings, UK Heritage Tour, and the Inspire Bible Conference have required face to face engagement as they have been carried on over the past years.

In complying with UK Government's public health directions during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Trustees have had to postpone those Amnos activities planned for 2021-22 which could not be conducted in compliance with those directions. Nevertheless, as the situation is getting better, the Trustees keep the situation and development under review. It remains the Trustees' intent to seek to re-establish Amnos' regular activities as soon as the developing situation and Government directions allow.

Structure, governance and management

The Charity was incorporated, as a company limited by guarantee, on 25 January 2011. It is registered in England and Wales (number 7505282) and is governed by its Memorandum of Articles of Association. It is also a registered charity in England and Wales(number 1141888). The Charity does not have a share capital and is limited by the guarantee of the members to a maximum of £10 each.

The Charity is governed by a Board of Trustees (Trustees). The names of the Trustees are set out below.

The Trustees are appointed having regard to the specific skills that are required for the governance of the Charity. In view of the size of the Charity, the Trustees consider that they have a range of experience that is suitable for the governance of the Charity.

Trustees who join the Charity will have an appropriate induction programme.

The Charity‘s day to day operations are run by its Executive Director, Revd. Dr Daniel Chae. As Gareth Jones stepped down, not only his capacity of a Trustee but also that of Secretary of the Charity, Daniel Chae has been appointed to be Secretary of the Charity on 19 February 2021.

Gareth Jones stepped down due to his sudden illness, and eventually he passed away. We want to acknowledge his enormous contribution to our charity from its conception now only with his legal profession but also with his dedication to the vision and ministries of Amnos Ministries.

Public Benefit

The Trustees recognise their responsibilities towards public benefit under the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 and have had regard to the guidance from the Charity Commission on public benefit. This requirement is reflected in the objects of the Charity, described above. The Trustees consider that these benefits are clear and identifiable. These benefits are set out within the appropriate sections of this report.

Trustees’ responsibility in respect of the financial statements

Company law requires the trustees (who are also the Trustees of the Charity for the purposes of company law) to prepare financial statements for each financial year. Under that law the trustees have elected to prepare financial statements in accordance with UK GAAP (United Kingdom Accounting Standards and Applicable laws). The financial statements are required by law to give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the Charity and the surplus or deficit for the period. In preparing these accounts, the trustees are required to:

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the Charity and to ensure that the accounts comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the Charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the detection and prevention of fraud and other irregularities.

The trustees are also responsible, as trustees of the Charity, for compliance with the accounting and reporting requirements of the Charities Act 2011.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Amnos Ministries

I report on the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31 August 2021, which are set out on pages 10 to 13.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The trustees (who are also the Trustees of the Charity for the purposes of company law) are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

Having satisfied myself that the Charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to:

Basis of independent examiner's report

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Trustees' responsibilities:

The members have not required the company to obtain an audit of its accounts for the year in question in accordance with section 476.

The Trustees acknowledge their responsibilities for complying with the requirements of the Act with respect to accounting records and the preparation of accounts.

1. Accounting Policies

These Financial Statements are prepared for the year ended 31 August 2021

The principal accounting policies adopted, judgements and key sources of estimation uncertainty in the preparation of the financial statements are as follows:

a) Basis of preparation: The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) - (Charities SORP (FRS 102) and the Companies Act 2006.

b) The trustees have taken advantage of the disclosure exemption within FRS102 not to produce a cash flow statement.

Fund Accounting

Restricted funds are subjected to restriction on their expenditure imposed by the donor.

Unrestricted funds are funds available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the objects of the Charity.

Incoming Resources

All incoming resources are included in the SOFA during the period in which they are receivable and can be quantified with reasonable accuracy.

Resources Expended

All expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all costs related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings, they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Tax status

The company is a registered charity and not subject to Corporation Tax on the current activities.
