## **TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT**

## **OF**

## **NORTH LONDON SWEDISH SCHOOL LIMITED**

## **FOR THE YEAR 1 APRIL 2024 TO 31 MARCH 2025**

## **INTRODUCTION AND OVERVIEW OF THE CHARITY’S PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES**

## **Background and legal status**

The trustees present their annual report for the financial year ended 31 March 2025 (the **reporting period** ) for North London Swedish School Limited (the “ **Charity** ” or “ **NLSS** ”), registered charity number 1141864 and company limited by guarantee number 07183323. This report has been prepared to comply with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) and relevant Charity Commission guidance for the trustees’ annual report.

## **Charitable purposes and objectives**

NLSS exists to advance education by providing lessons in the Swedish language and on Swedish culture and society to children in the UK who have at least one Swedish parent and for whom Swedish is one of the languages spoken in the home, as set out in its governing document. (SORP paras 1.17 and 1.19.)

## **Public benefit statement**

The trustees confirm they have had regard to the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit in planning the Charity’s activities, in line with SORP para 1.18. Beneficiaries are children living in the UK with Swedish heritage. NLSS’ activities provide identifiable public benefit by furthering the Swedish language, both written and spoken, and cultural connection to Sweden for the children, alongside their British education and roots.

## **KEY ACTIVITIES, ACHIEVEMENTS AND IMPACT DURING THE REPORTING PERIOD**

## **Main activities**

During the year, NLSS delivered structured, curriculum-based Swedish lessons for two hours on Saturday mornings during British school term-time. Nursery-age children participated in circle time, singing, and crafts to develop early language and cultural familiarity, while school-age children received progressive teaching in reading, writing and speaking Swedish, and studied topics in Swedish culture, history and society. NLSS organises cultural events for the children, including a Lucia concert, a historic Swedish custom and atmospheric event celebrated annually in December, and a summer concert at the end of the summer term where the children learn and sing Swedish summer-themed songs. In 2025, NLSS organised visits to the National Portrait Gallery with a Swedish London-based guide for the older students. NLSS also co-organised an evening for parents with a multilingualism professor. This addresses the SORP requirement to summarise main activities and how they further charitable purposes (paras 1.17 and 1.19). [7]

## **Achievements in the year**

The Charity’s principal achievements included demonstrable improvements in beneficiaries’ Swedish language skills, as evidenced through classroom progression and participation, and a strengthened connection to Swedish culture and community life. The trustees consider that the inclusive, structured environment supported beneficiaries with varying proficiency levels to progress in literacy, speaking confidence and cultural understanding. This addresses SORP para 1.20 on the difference made to beneficiaries.

## **Beneficiary outcomes and difference made**

The Charity’s activities support beneficiaries to maintain and develop bi- and multilingual capability, thereby reinforcing identity, belonging and family cohesion across Swedish, British and other cultural contexts. This contributes to community cohesion within the Swedishspeaking community in London and beyond. The trustees consider these outcomes to be direct expressions of public benefit aligned with the Charity’s objects and SORP para 1.20.

## **Volunteer contribution and early years impact**

In addition to educational outcomes, engagement with songs, arts and crafts, and cultural topics fosters positive attitudes to language learning at early years stages, which research indicates is critical for sustained bi- and multilingual development. Volunteers (trustees and parents) materially enhance the reach and quality of provision, consistent with SORP para 1.38 regarding volunteer contributions.
