## **Church @the Cross Birkenhead Annual Report**

**(Formerly Charing Cross and Tranmere Methodist)**

## **September 2021 to August 2022**

The Methodist Church year is the same as the school year starting in September but it got off to a much slower start this year as we came out of lockdown and the nation started to recover from Covid 19. However, we started our Worship, Mums & Tots, Girl Guides. Rainbows, Brownies, Wed Junior club. It was all a little slow at first but by Christmas was back up to regular numbers

The tail end of 2021 our minister Rev Steve Carpenter retired, he and his family moved back to Dudley in the Midlands. They take our very best wishes with them the whole family will be greatly missed. We evolved into a modern church during the eight years Steve was our minister his vision and guidance brought us closer to God and each other.

Our youth club continues with volunteers and continues to support young people with disabilities taking advantage of all the hard work done during lockdown to move the youth club equipment up from Charing Cross Church and create the youth centre in our new church building.

We were also awarded the household support grant to make food hampers for families in the community. Christmas week the church was packed full of food to give out to those in need.

The church puppetry team called the Travelling Foam Heads were out and about again performing in Schools, charity events at Morisons New Brighton as well as Sunday morning worship.

Spring comes in and with it our first Wedding in this new church Nichola and Christopher two of our own congregation were married in February the whole church turned out to wish them well on this joyous occasion. Before you know it it’s Easter and we are all busy with holiday club and Spring Harvest.

In May we were awarded another grant to pay for staffing and support for twelve months to expand our community work. We called this project Tranmere Matters and with it we were able to pay some part time staff to work in partnership with our youth club, enhancing it particularly through a music project, a driver for our minibus and a worker to set up an adult social club, mental wellbeing group, and a food club which later developed into a warm hub. We have excellent dedicated staff and look forward to this project continuing into next year.

Guides Rainbows and Brownies all continue to grow and one of our leaders Joan was given an award for fifty years of service to Guiding

The school Summer holidays were a big success largely thanks to the Holiday Activity Fund who enabled us to provide meals and some exciting activities for four

weeks of the holidays This was done in partnership with our sister church Moreton Methodist Wirral. We had over 150 different children attend between the two churches who enjoyed a variety of healthy meals. The activities included a falconry exhibition, Wheels extreme skateboarding, AZ Safari mobile Zoo, Circus Skills, various bouncy castles and craft activities and a visit from Liverpool Chinese Hung Gar Karate Team who did a lion dance. We also went on a couple of coach trips to Chester Zoo and Green Acres Farm.

So having got off to a slow start the year finished with a fantastic summer next year we plan to expand our Mums & Tots opening another morning and extend our Monday evening youth club to include a junior section for children with disabilities.
