ASTON & NECHELLS FOODBANK

Overall there was a 17.2% decrease in the numbers of people in food poverty who received food parcels. This shows some hope though we cannot rule out other means of food delivery as the core reason for the reduction.

Though the numbers did decrease in 2024 the numbers remain much higher than the pre-covid/cost of living crisis era and shows there’s much more to be done to alleviate poverty within our locality. Interestingly the percentage decrease from this year to last in terms of children fed is nearly 25% (24.1), this can perhaps be associated with the rise in help within schools and community settings. It is always difficult as just one acting foodbank within the region to give a full and clear picture. Particularly at a time where we know the Birmingham Food Justice Network is growing daily.

OTHER BUSINESS

DONATIONS

The Foodbank has continued to be blessed by food and cash donations. Associated with the recession, food donations have reduced and the Foodbank is purchasing more long-life food. Thankfully cash donations are remaining steady. Donations from the Permanent Collection Points have remained fruitful at Sainsbury in Mere Green and Tesco in Aston Lane. A thank you to all these generous people.

FOODBANK PROJECT MANAGER

The generous grants have enabled the Board to continue to employ a salaried 20 hours per week Foodbank Project Manager. We remain ever grateful to Suzi for her continued presence and support.

VOLUNTEERS TAKE THE STRAIN

The Foodbank distribution sessions have been 100% staffed by volunteers . Volunteers have also run the warehouse and held cash and food collections. In 2024 volunteers contributed approx 7500 hours to the foodbank

DISTRIBUTION SESSIONS

The foodbank has three weekly distribution centres . Monday at St Matthews church in Nechells, Wednesday at the Bethel Free Baptist Church in Ward End, and Fridays at the Salvation Army Centre in Aston.

ADVICE SERVICES

Throughout the year a grant from the Heart of England has funded the provision of an advice worker at all food distribution sessions. In 2023 944 clients received advice at distribution sessions. The service is provided by staff from Birmingham Settlement, this partnership is working well and we will continue to utilise grants where possible to make sure it continues.

A NOTE FROM THE CHAIR

In the last financial year, over 5,000 individuals were supported through the Aston and Nechells foodbank, meeting a vital community need. This would not have been possible without the tireless work of our volunteers, who run our foodbanks week in and week out.

As Chair of Trustees at Can Do 4:13, I want to place on record our sincere thanks to all our dedicated volunteers. Their unwavering commitment makes our foodbanks in Aston, Nechells, and Ward End a cornerstone of community support. From greeting clients, packing bags, and distributing food, to quietly working behind the scenes, shopping for supplies, restocking our stores, collecting at supermarkets, and coordinating logistics, the time, care, and teamwork of our volunteers are at the heart of everything we achieve.

I would also like to thank our Foodbank Project Manager for her exceptional work in ensuring our foodbanks run so well.

Finally, as trustees, we are very grateful for the donations we have received from local churches, schools, businesses, and individuals, which enable us to continue this vital work and thank you for any future support we receive.

FUTURE

The top priority is working to the Charity's objectives. We are pleased that we can continue with professional financial advice at all food distribution sessions and CAN DO is only proposing to expand this work. We remain concerned that poverty is not reducing, and look forward to working with Trussell further on this area.

We are always looking for new avenues to maximise our reach in terms of receiving donations (regular food or cash donations are much appreciated). If your company, hobby group, church or sports team can help, please get in touch. We remain committed to fulfilling our aim to relieve those in our catchment area of poverty and to do so we must extend our donation pool.
