## **ASTON & NECHELLS FOODBANK**

Overall there was a 7% increase in the numbers of people in food poverty who received food parcels. 46 Tonnes of food was given out in food parcels.

The first 3 months of 2023 had the highest ever demand for food parcels. This coincided with a serious recession and the Government changing benefit rules. Thankfully demand in the last 9 months was significantly lower.

Ward End closed 31 July to 14 August

## **OTHER BUSINESS**

## **DONATIONS**

The Foodbank has continued to be blessed by food and cash donations. Associated with the recession, food donations have reduced and the Foodbank is purchasing more long-life food. Thankfully cash donations have increased. Donations from the Permanent Collection Points have remained high at Sainsbury in Mere Green and Tesco in Aston Lane. **A thank you to all these generous people.**

## **PROFESSIONAL COORDINATOR**

The generous grants have enabled the Board to continue to employ a salaried **20 hours per week project coordinator.**

## **VOLUNTEERS TAKE THE STRAIN**

The Foodbank distribution sessions have been **100% staffed by volunteers** . Volunteers have also run the warehouse and held cash and food collections. In 2023 volunteers contributed **7500 hours to the foodbank**

## **DISTRIBUTION SESSIONS**

The foodbank has **three weekly distribution centres** . Monday at St Matthews church in Nechells, Wednesday at the Elim Church and now the Bethel Free Baptist Church in Ward End, and Fridays at the Salvation Army Centre in Aston.

In August the Ward End distribution centre closed for 2 weeks and reopened on 16 August having **relocated into the Bethel Free Baptist Church in Ward End Road, B8 4QU** .

## **ADVICE SERVICES**

Throughout the year a grant from ASDA via Trussell Trust has funded the provision of an advice worker at all food distribution sessions. **In 2023 981 clients received advice at distribution sessions.** The service is provided by staff from Birmingham Settlement, this partnership is working well.

## **FUTURE**

The top priority is working to the Charity's objectives. We are pleased that there is now a professional financial advice at all food distribution sessions and CAN DO is only proposing to expand this work. We remain concerned that poverty is not reducing.

We are always looking for new avenues to maximum our reach in terms of receiving donations (regular food or cash donations are much appreciated). If your company, hobby group, church or sports team can help. Please get in touch.
