## **CAN DO 4:13 Company number 07508388, Charity No 1141676 REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31st DECEMBER 2020**

CAN DO 4:13 was registered as Company Number 07508388 on 27[th] January 2011 and as Charity Number 1141676 on 27[th] April 2011. The Company and Charitable objectives are

- 1 - prevention and/or relief of poverty and need in the Parish of Aston and Nechells and the immediate surrounding area.

- 2 - advancement of the Christian religion and its relevance to the Community which it seeks to serve with particular relevance but not limited to the advancement of community development and community cohesion. The trustees in furthering this object will:

   - promote Christian teachings about compassion for the poor and needy, loving one’s neighbour and loving one’s enemies, intercultural and inter-racial harmony; and

   - encourage and facilitate the practice of these Christian teachings especially in helping those members of the Christian community who are fearful or lacking in confidence to put these Christian teachings into practice in their neighbourhoods alongside other fellow Christians.

- **3** - the promotion of religious and racial harmony

**Legal -** The Company has six members who are all honorary directors

Chairman Canon Sharon Palmer MBE, Erdington, Birmingham Secretary N Cripps, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands. Treasurer R Trotman, Brownhills, Walsall Kerry Lenihan, Yardley, Birmingham Susan Partridge, Shard End, Birmingham G Miller, Hodge Hill, Birmingham (went on sabbatical on 1[st] September 2019 which end in August 2020)

In 2020 the Board held 3 meetings and numerous informal sessions. Directors do not receive remuneration and have claimed no expenses.

**Administrative -** The Board has delegated day to day management responsibility for the Aston and Nechells Foodbank to its own Management Committee. The Management Committee is required to comply with terms of reference that have been approved by the Board. A Board director is a nominated member of the management committee.

**Governance –** During August Geoff Miller ended his sabbatical. He has not subsequently attended meetings but has resumed his post as volunteer warehouse manager.

## **Principle Activities**

**Aston & Nechells Foodbank -** Overall there was a 24% increase in the numbers of people in food poverty who received food parcels. There was a noticeable increase in activity in the first 6 months of the year. During April and May demand was double the normal level. During the school summer holiday period demand was low. We suspect it was associated with the impact of the Mark Rashford food programmes for families with children eligible for free school meals.

The response of the public and business has been brilliant. Increased demand was generally met by an increase in food donations and our ability to purchase to make up shortfalls in specific food lines. The generosity of the financial donations has been amazing.

**Volunteers take the strain -** The Foodbank has continued to be 100% volunteer run but staffing has been a problem. At the beginning of the lockdown a significant proportion of volunteers were required to self-isolate. The short fall was made up by adopting different procedures including pre preparing food parcels. A number of volunteers were required to selfisolate but they were generally replaced by staff on furlough or newly redundant employees.

At the height of the crisis two volunteers in key management positions had serious illnesses. They have fully recovered and we are grateful that other volunteers acted up to fill the gaps. The Board has reviewed the staffing model and is using some of the donated money to fund a two year fixed term part time post for a Foodbank Coordinator.

**Distribution sessions -** The foodbank has three weekly distribution centres. Monday at St Matthews church in Nechells, Wednesday at the Elim church in Ward End, and Fridays at the Salvation Army centre in Aston. At the beginning of the lockdown the owner of the Unity Hubb in Ward End closed the building. During April there were no distribution sessions in Ward End. The Elim Church ns Ward End stepped forward and allowed the distribution session to transfer to their building.

At all distribution sessions a one-way system has been introduced and to meet Covid requirements there are strict limits on the number of people who can be in the buildings.

**Warehouse** – The warehouse in St Matthews Community Hall is open to receive donations on Tuesday mornings.

It has been an exceptionally busy year for the Foodbank warehouse. 39½ tonnes has been donated and 38½ tonnes distributed. An overflow store has been opened at Birchfield Gospel Hall. We are continuing to look for suitable commercial warehouse accommodation.

The warehouse has received some very large food donations from Tesco and other supermarkets. During the first lockdown we received sizable food donation from Feed Birmingham from street collections organised by Near Neighbours Diocese of Birmingham.

**Advice Services –** During the year we obtained a grant from ASDA via Trussell Trust to provide the services of an advice worker at food distribution sessions. We have gone into partnership with Birmingham Settlement to deliver this service at the Ward End and Aston distribution sessions.

**Future –** The top priority is working to the Charity's objectives. We are pleased that there is now an advice worker at food distribution sessions but we remain concerned that while poverty is all around us CAN DO is not expanding to undertake more work.
