Welcome from the Chalr
This year has been quite lumullyous for healthcare in the UK. We have seen the new 11>year plan for the NHS with
ils shift In omphasis from Irealmenl lo prevenlion and a ¢ommilmenl lo move heatthcare out of hospiial and closer lo
home. NHS England and the DHSC are merging. The Governmènt and Ihe pharma¢tsuli¢al Industry have been
deadlocked over price negotiations- the list goes on.
For palienis and families with tare genètic conditions and Ihe groups that svpport them all Ihis change h8$ bèèn very
unsellling. AllhoLtgh change can often create opportunities. uncertainly about how care anil support will be organized
in future is stressful.
Throughout the year the team al Gen8 People have Pfovided conllnuily, monitoring proposgd ¢h8ng8s and pulling
forward Ihe needs and views of our Partnership Nelwork and the familles they 8UPPOrt lo Government, the NHS and
lo Industry and advocating lor positive change.
We have also supported the Network through capacity building woik5hops arKI webinars, equipping Ihem with lools
that enablè them Éo unclersland belter the changes under way.
For indiwduals and families our helpline has provided Invaluablo suppori lor those slruggllng lo find a dlagnosis ol al a
loss as lo how lo secure the 8UPPOrt Ihey need.
Our cornmilmenl is lo conlinuily, lo being a steady presence supporting our ￿mMunitY as we navigate Ihesè turbulent

To fo¢us on the helpline bri8fly, Ihis year the Gene Peoplè genetic counsellor led helpline iesponded lo 141 enquiries
from individuals, f8milles and profe$$ionals deallng with a genetic condition. Our genetic counsellor spenl 82 hours on
stsppori calls and sent 230 support emails. Enquirers most often contacted the helpline aboul genellc lesling130%1
and lor guidance on how lo access clinic81 genetic seTvice51270A). Emolional supporl was ofton needed. and a11
enquiries w8re managed wilh stsnsilivily and care. Enquiriès were made about 70 differenl genetic condilions. wilh
Cyslic Fibiosis being Ihe most common oondilion enqLTrired about. Many olher conditions w810 only enquired about on
one o¢¢asion each and are extremely rare diseases. Some of the situations managed ware CA)mplex and required
ongoing support Ifom Ihe helpline genetic counsellor
Our ongolng pre and post ¢on18cI impacl suryeys showed that 100% 01 those enquirars who responded found their
