## **About Transformation for Veterans and the local community** 

Established in 2010, Transformation for Veterans helps create a pathway for vulnerable veterans to re-integrate back into society. At the heart of this is working towards sustainable employment, and independence for them and their families. 

Transformation for Veterans specialises in empowering ex-military personnel and their loved ones, so they can readjust, refocus, and achieve their full potential outside of the armed services. After leaving the military, the transferable skills for some, are obvious. For example, skills in artisan trades are often taught as part of the role of a member of the Royal Engineers, but for others seeing their value of weapon handling skills in a civilian world can be a struggle, which can have an impact on the self-esteem of those leaving the military. It is widely recognised that practical skills can always be taught, attributes such as attitudes and self-belief are more difficult to change. 

Our founder and CEO Joe, who is an armed forces veteran himself and has lived experience of making the transition to civilian life, helps Veterans deal with the “hidden” injuries such as PTSD, anxiety, and stress. We believe and our research has proven that with the correct guidance, attitudes, behaviours, and beliefs can be changed for the better to enable people to reach their true potential.

## **From the Chairperson Winston Wagstaff** 

I continue to enjoy my time in post as the Chair of this amazing charity. 

We have significant goals for the next few years, and I look forward in helping support, guide and drive the charity forward. 

We hope you enjoy reading all about the great work that the charity has been involved in. 

This year has continued to be a challenge due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The charity has continued to be resourceful and adapted to a new way of working. We have developed online support programmes and resources to enable our veterans to easily access training and support in the virtual world. 

The charity has successfully helped Veterans and their families with finding employment, and self-employment. A training programme was provided to train individuals to improve confidence and self-esteem. Removing self-doubt and fear of failure, to allow a more positive future. 

The difficulties veterans face varies from practical problems of finance and housing to more personal issues of social isolation and mental ill health are now particularly prevalent and while we cannot always solve their problems, we can and are, always there to listen and support them. 

I have supported our local Veteran community by volunteering my time to teach drawing and painting to those who like being creative or simply like to pass some time away. I have also been involved in organizing outdoor pursuits such as regular walks to keep fit and active. Gardening too has been another activity which has been most enjoyable. Helping some of our elderly veterans to reduce their garden maintenance. By using clever design tips and a lot of gravel, the hard work, time, and effort put in has been very rewarding. The result of the time spent has meant the individuals concerned can now relax and enjoy their gardens. It will also enable them to manage their own gardens themselves in the future. 

I would like to give recognition to the dedication of all involved in Transformation for veterans (T4V) including our volunteers and our

community. I want to thank all of you who support, help, deliver and fund T4V’s charitable activities as without you we would not be able to support our Veteran community. 

We are, as ever, grateful to the many and varied organisations, which provide the funding and support that makes it possible for us to continue our work. Fund raising continues to be a major challenge, especially core cost funding and is unlikely to get any easier in the future. 

Our challenge now, is to continue and increase partnership working and be creative in what we do alongside increasing grant funding. Being mindful of the UK Government law and advice on Covid-19 and following the latest updates by the Fundraising Regulators and adhere to the standards set by the Code of Fundraising Practice to ensure the health and safety of all concerned. 

The future will be to provide services flexible enough to meet the needs of our Veteran community. The range of services T4V offers relies entirely on the commitment of our team and valued volunteers. This is a testament to the high quality of their work, and we are immensely grateful to all those who contribute so much to everything that we do. 

Finally, I am grateful to my fellow trustees for their continued commitment to, and work on behalf of, T4V. Their knowledge, and experience, helps to guide the Charity in increasingly difficult times of uncertainty. 

## **From the CEO Joe O’Connor DipPFS AMC FRSA** 

During this period, times have been uncertain to say the least. I am pleased to report that with a most positive resolve and the full cooperation of our Board of Trustees, our team, and volunteers, we have utilised the governments generous furlough scheme which has really helped with the sustainability of our fabulous charity. 

The great news is, when all is said and done, Transformation for Veterans is still fully committed to helping ex-service personnel who have suffered physical/mental injury because of their commitment to serving their country. 

We continue to provide bespoke services and support, so our veteran community can regain their self-respect, dignity and achieve success. Our specialist team deliver formal and informal online presentations, workshops,

learning sessions and tutorials designed to stimulate and challenge veterans. Our role is, as always to be there and equip them with essential skills needed to achieve a successful civilian life. 

Our bigger goal for the future is to raise sufficient funds to develop a bespoke Transformation resort offering a plethora of services to our veteran community. The aim being to help them and their families to achieve their true potential. 

This very special facility consisting of several Lodges and an indoor and outdoor training facility, is being designed to cater for a wide range of needs. Our project team have carefully designed the overall project which can be built in stages. 

The great news is, we have made massive developments in this regard, and we are in the process of negotiating with several organisations to fund our project. 

Speaking as a Veteran and following a medical discharge from the Army I found the transition back into civilian life challenging. From my own personal experience, I am now passionate about helping my fellow comrades achieve their goals. To this end, and already qualified as a Professional Financial Advisor, I latterly qualified as a Master Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) Timeline therapy, hypnotherapy, and an Accredited Master Coach. 

I recently successfully completed an online mental health first aid course. And in my role as a member of the Personal Finance Society I am the Ambassador for its Forces Money Plan initiative. I have recently featured as a guest on a specialist veterans’ panel on Radio 4 talking about helping veterans with their finances. To find out more you can visit: www.thepfs.org/forcesmoneyplan 

I will also be volunteering my time to do a weekly slot each week on a Podcast It will be called, ‘Pull Up a Sandbag with Joe’ 

Finally, working with organisations in the Cheshire and surrounding areas has highlighted the need to help those with challenges and barriers in selfconfidence, motivation, Anxiety, PTSD, phobias, financial issues, addictions, breakdown in family relationships, social isolation, and unemployment. We have achieved a 98% success rate with all those we have helped and wish to continue offering this support well into the future.

## **The Trustees’ Annual Report** 

## **Governing document** 

The organisation is a charitable company limited by guarantee, incorporated on 15[th] June 2010, and registered as a charity named Sanctuary for Heroes. The company was established under a Memorandum of Association which established the objects and powers of the charitable company and is governed under its Articles of Association. A special resolution adopting the new Memorandum and articles of association and name change to Sanctuary for Veterans was made on 7[th] March 2011. The charity has since changed its name to Transformation for Veterans to reflect more of what is about on 17[th] September 2015. In the event of the company being wound up members are required to contribute an amount not exceeding £1. 

## **Recruitment and appointment of the management committee** 

The Trustees, who are Directors for the purpose of company law and under the Company’s Articles, are known as members of the management committee. Under the requirements of the Memorandum and Articles of Association there must be 3 or more Trustees on the Board. 

## **Management committee induction and training** 

Our Trustee recruitment procedure and induction process is in place to ensure all existing and new Trustees complete the process and are informed of their role and responsibilities. Safeguarding and Data Protection is an essential requirement for all Trustees. The Trustee Recruitment & Trustee induction pack, which has been prepared by drawing information from various Charity Commission publications signposted through the Commission’s guide and contains the following: 

• The work, aims & mission of the Association, essential training needs including Health & Safety, Safeguarding and Confidentiality 

- Full role and responsibilities, obligations of trustees & resources for 

- further reading, including information from the Charity Commission

Future and objectives. 

## **ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE** 

Transformation for Veterans has a Management Committee of a minimum of 3 and maximum of 10 members. Each member elected and co-opted with not more than 5 persons representing organisations at any one time who meet 2 times a year and who are responsible for strategic direction and the policy of the charity. 

In 2020-2021 the Management Committee consisted of 3 elected members of backgrounds relevant to the work of the charity. The activity of the Board and their management of T4V is checked and regulated by Companies House and the Charity Commission. It is also monitored by funders as grants and contracts are secured. 

## **VISION, MISSION AND AIMS** 

The T4V’s vision for the Veteran community and their families is one of a thriving diverse vibrant community in which the Transformation for veterans (T4V) acts as a catalyst in partnership with other community and voluntary organisations, to engage with the local community for the provision of local facilities, local employment, and community activity. 

Transformation for veterans has defined its mission as: “Our mission is to offer Veterans and their loved ones a Transformation resource empowering them to achieve their true potential.” 

T4V will achieve its vision facilitated through the following aims: 

- To provide inter-generational and multi-cultural activities and services. 

- To have a diverse team of dedicated staff and volunteers. 

- To deliver diverse, engaging, fun and educational programmes.

• To create a mixed portfolio of funding including income from community enterprise activities to underpin the salaries of key staff and support for services. 

• To work in partnership with a range of Community & Voluntary Organisations to develop and deliver services to meet identified community needs. 

Our mission is to offer Veterans and their loved ones a Transformation resource empowering them to achieve their true potential. While we already offer help and support by providing a unique service and a gateway back into the community. Our aim is to build a Transformation resort in a rural setting. This purpose -built facility when completed will offer a bespoke range of services and support focusing on the well-being of our members. The service will be designed to empower Veterans and their families and develop the skill sets they need to identify and achieve their individual goals. 

Funding given for Training sessions in building confidence and self-esteem, 1 to 1 session given with the aim of removing barriers such as fears and anxiety. Ongoing support and coaching and therapy, delivery of bespoke workshops to explore and identify personal barriers to enable them to achieve agreed goals, re-engage with mainstream services, and ultimately maintain or gain employment. 

## **RISK MANAGEMENT** 

The trustees examine the major strategic, business, and operational risks which the charity faces so that the necessary steps can be taken to manage these risks at the AGM. The Board consider the major risks at their meetings, whilst other risks are considered as part of normal day to day management processes. The current main risks are securing longer term core & capital funding to meet essential core and overhead costs including maintenance to sustain and develop a variety of facilities and resources to meet demand in services. 

## **RESERVES POLICY** 

The Management Committee has examined the charity’s requirements for reserves, in view of the main risks to the organisation. It has established a policy whereby the unrestricted funds not committed or invested in tangible fixed assets held by the charity should be 3 months of the expenditure.

Expenditure for the financial year 2020/2021 was £10,000. The reserves are needed to meet the working capital requirements of the charity and the Management Committee are confident that at this level they would be able to continue the current activities of the charity in the event of a significant drop in funding or earned income. 

## **RELATED PARTIES** 

In so far as it is complimentary to the Charity’s objects, the charity is guided by both local and national policy. 

## **PUBLIC BENEFIT** 

The Trustees confirm that they have complied with their duty under the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the Charity Commission in exercising their powers and duties. 

## **TRANSFORMATION FOR VETERANS- ONLINE HUB** 

T4V is a multi-purpose community organisation that delivers a wide range of services itself or hosts services. It is looking into pro-actively engaging other organisations in the future to deliver their essential services in the Cheshire area. Our events and sessions are designed with all ages in mind and targeted towards the vulnerable, elderly and those most disadvantaged veteran community. (Subject to the UK Government guidance on the Covid pandemic) T4V now operates online until such time as it can start operating from our Lodge again, which is in the heart of the Cheshire district. 

## **MAKING A DIFFERENCE** 

T4V’s online training workshops and one to one session with Veterans, their wives and partners demonstrated via feedback forms the following: 

- 98% of people said they were confident after using our services 

- 97% said using our services helped them believe they can do more with their life. 

- 99% felt they benefited positively from our services 

A Veteran who was suicidal became self-employed. 

A Veteran became a volunteer, preventing social isolation. 

## **FEEDBACK FROM THOSE WHO COMPLETED THE WORKSHOPS** 

“I built up my confidence and started painting”

- “I no longer feel suicidal” 

- “I now have the confidence and skills to get a job” 

- “I feel more positive for my future.” 

## **ACTIVITIES, PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENTS** 

Building relationships with local organisations in the Cheshire areas. With the Warrington Disability Partnership, Warrington Veterans Hub, Salvation Army Crewe, Hamilton House in Chester, Housing Trusts, Job centres and with local Health care professionals. Inside connexions in the Liverpool area. 

Regular telephone calls to offer support, advice and companionship to the elderly, vulnerable and socially isolated members in our Veteran community. The telephone contacts were greatly appreciated and, in some cases, prevented hospital admission, suicide, and loneliness. 

## **PARTNERSHIP WITH 3[RD] PARTY FUNDRAISERS;** 

ECS Textiles Ltd are a recycling company. They raise vital funds through donations from various clothing collection schemes. The donated items are then recycled and in so doing divert waste from landfill sites. 

As well as giving regular donations to charity, this initiative also helps with employment. Regular donations for this financial year end total £30,000. 

## **Case studies:** 

We have used our business contacts to establish business networking opportunities for a number of veterans. This has led to them developing their own businesses and generate a sustainable income. 

During our office refurbishment, we have also used the construction skills of veterans in joinery, electrical works, plastering and roofing. During their time with us they have earned an income and put their skills to good use. 

In every instance the feedback from the veterans is that they feel useful and valued members of our community and feel more confident about their future. 

## **FINANCES AND FUNDING**

The attached financial statements show the current state of the finances with total incoming resources amounted to £67,430 and £34,645 a government grant for the furlough scheme. A Reserve of £10,000.00 held in account. 

## **FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS** 

## **Key priorities over the next 3year period are;** 

- . 

- Embed Safeguarding making it the spine of the T4V 

- Develop further partnerships & networking opportunities to strengthen delivery of training provision 

- Increase the portfolio of volunteering roles 

- Increase the number of Trustees 

- Develop training and support for our Veteran community. 

- Implement Strategies to start the stage one for the Transformational resort. 

- Develop new 3year Business Plan within 2020 

## **Trustee responsibilities** 

The trustees (who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of company law) are responsible for preparing the Trustees Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice) 

Company law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year (or other accounting period) which give a true and fair view of the situation of the charitable company, and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charitable company for that period. In preparing these financial statements the trustees are required to: 

- select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently.

- observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP 

- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent. 

- state whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed, 

- subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements. 

- prepare accounts on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charitable company will continue in operation. 

The trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records, that disclose with reasonable accuracy, at any time, the financial position of the charitable company and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charitable company, and hence for taking 

reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities. 

The Trustee’s report is prepared in accordance with the small companies’ regime under Part 15 of the Companies Act 2006.

I. ACCOUNTING POLICIES
The principal accounting policies adopted in the Preparation of the financial
statements are set out klow and have been consist¢nlly applied within the accounts.
Basis of a¢eounting- The fJtTrancial slatements have been PTepared under the
historical cost convention.
Going con¢ern- The Directors commit lo providing sufficient funds to enable the
Company io continue to trade.
F.xemption from preparing A cash Ilow statement- Exemption has been taken on
the grounds that ihe charilable company qualifies as a small charilable company.
Incoming resour¢ey- All incoming tesources are included on the Statement of
Financial Activiti¢s when the charity is legally entitled to the income and ihe amount
can be quantified with reasonable accuracy.
Grant income- Grants for th¢ purchase of fixed assets a￿ credit¢d to restrici
incoming resources when rcceivabl¢ and irdnsfenrd to unrestricted funds when the
asset is purch&sed. Depreciation on the fixed assets purch&8ed with such grants is
charged against unrestricted fi￿ds.
Income from grants which relate to perforniance and specifi¢ deliverables is
accounted for as the Charity earns the right to consideration by ils perfomiance.
Grants are credited to incoming resourc¢s on the earlier date of when they ar¢
received or when they are receivable unless they relat¢ to a specified future period in
which case th¢y are defe￿ed.
Voluntary in¢ome- Income receivcd via donations and gifts to the charity is
included in full in the Statement of Financial Activities when received.
Investment ineom¢- Investment income is included in the Statcmenl of Financial
Activities when received.

Resources e¥ptnde(l - Expendlture is recognised on an accruals basi5 as the liability
is inciirred. Charitable expenditure covers all costs incurred by the charity in the
delivery of its a¢tivilies and services. It includes both costs that can be allocated
directly to siich activities and Costs of an indirect nature required lo support them.
All costs are allocated between the Staiem¢nt ofFinancial Activities on tt basis

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out
