Structure overnance ond mana ement Membership of the PCC is detemined under the Church Representation Rules and consists of certain ex-officio members (the Dean,. Readers - Mrs Alison Hassell, Mr Peter Armstrong.. the Churchwardens and member5 of the Deanery Synod) and e1ve members of the church who ore elected ol the Annual Parochial Church Meeting IAPCMI. The lotter Iwelve members are elected on a rotary basis. four being elected each year to serve for a three-year tem. Individuals moy serve for a tolal of six years and then must Stand down for years before being eligible for reelection. Ob'eclives ond Aclivities The primary objective of St Mory's PCC is the promotion of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according lo the doctrines and practices of the Church of England. The PCC has the responsibility of co-operating with the Dean in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral. evangelistic. social and ecumenical. The PCC is responsible for the worship and general life of the church throughout the porish and for the buildings at st Mary's site. The Church of the Ascension and Churchyord ot Telham are owned by o separate chority. Dean Crake's Gift. which has its own monaging Truslees. Public benefi* is achieved through the ptovision of public worship.. education of adults ond children in the Christian faith.- availability as a venue for Christian marriage services and provision of funeral services and associated pastoral support. The Church Holl provides accommodation for uniformed orgonisalions, Botlle & Bexhill Foodbank and other Community Organisations. These ore available to all parishioners within the legislative provision of the Church of Englond. Achlevements ond erfofmance As at 31st December 2023 Ihere were 151 members of the Church Electoral Roll, of whom 46 were not resident in the parish. The numbers have risen slighlly in the past yeor. The PCC are working wth the incumbent lo continue to develop a financiolly sustoinoble model in accordance with the Mission Action Plan, involving Tourism and Herilage in the Church, and the refurbishment of the Upper Hall. Work has begun on registering St Mory's as a Major Church worknng wth the DAC to Secure registration. Work also continues to develop a plan for the reordering of Church of The Ascension Telham. An appeal lo review congregational giving involved a series of sermons at the 9.30am and I1.15om services on the discipleship of giving. This w05 followed by a gift day held os o response to review and plan individual giving. Contribution to the life of local schools.. The historical relationship belween St Mary's and Battle Abbey School continues to flourish. This includes the longstanding annual seNices for Founders Doy Service in the outumn at Sl Mary's, Christmas Carob. ond Speech Day in the summer. Since the beginning 012022, Batlie Abbey School have held their weekiy Tuesday ossembly and end of term Mark Reading in the church. A series of summer lunchtime concerts held in the church were well attended by porents and members of the public.
A St Mary'5 Battle Oigon Scholat5hip was set up to enable a student from the school to undertoke organ lessons ond atlend a day ot Chichester Cathedral in the autumn, to gain experience of Cathedrol worship. The aim is to encourage future students to work towards an Oxbridge, Consetvatoire. or Musical College 5cholar5hip and contribute to the much-needed future organists in the Church of Englond. Funding for this wos from o donation for Ihis initialive and the Dean is seeking to find furtherfunding for continuing yea. The esteemed organist MrTravis Bakerworks wth the Dean lo run the scholarship ond teaches both organ and piano lessons in Sl Mary's. The Dean and Church Reoder Mrs Alison Hassell have continued to serve as Foundation School Governors at Bottle & Langton Church of England Primary School during 2023. The Dean also works ecumenically with Batme Baptist Church to take part in leading collective worship at the school during the week. The annuol Leavers, SeNice and Christmas Carols SeNice took place at St Mory's which were both well attended by sludenls and porenls. Cronmer Awords School Competition". st Mory's hosted its third onnual Prayer Book Society 'Cronmer Awards, School Regional Competition for Chichester Diocese. Various local Schools and wder afield entered up to 4 students eoch in bolh the junior ond senior categories wilh 2 finalists being entered in the nationol finol ot Liverpool Hope University in February 2023, and Hampton Court Palace in February 2024. Claremont Independent School held three carol services for their pre-prep, prep school ond senior school ond Claverham Commvnity College held their awards evening at the beginning of the year. Significant SeNices at st Mary'5 st Mary's continue5 lo perform ils role as a Civic Centre Church wth various seryices including Remembrance Sunday attended by local civic dignitaries. inclvding High Sheriff Richard Bickersteth. constituency MP Huw Merrimon. community leaders and uniformed organisations. The RAF Baltle 88 SQN ATC fonned a guard of honour as well as taknng part in the service. In May the Dean led a vigil for the King before tha Coronation, and conducted on ecumenical Celebration Coronation Service for the King ottended by the Deputy Lieutenont. Graham Peters DL and hrs wife Mrs Sarah Peters along with civic dignitaries. religious and community leaders. unifomed organisations ond Baptist, Methodist and Romon Cotholic congre9alions. In September. the Dean conducted a Civic Service for Rother District Council attended by the Lord Lieutenant. High Sheriff. Councillors. and Officers of Rother District council, Mayor5. Chairs ond Clerks of oll the parishes. The Church Carol services including Advent Carols. Carols by Candlefight and Christingle all took place, ond were very well attended. CoroLs in the Churchyard continues to grow with people who would not normally come to a church seNice. The Deon represented the parish after being invited to attend the Thanksgiving Service and Summer Reception for the High Sherriff of Eost Su55ex wth his wife.
The Deon as Choirman of the Proyer Book Society for Chichester Diocese represented the parish wth more than 6 people gathered in Westminster in October to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Prayer Book Society. A service of Holy Communion was led in St Margaret's church by the Society's Ecclesiaslical Palron. Ihe Rt Revd ond Rt Hon. The Lord Chartres as well as amending the Prayer Book Sociely lunch in Church House with on address by the Bishop of Oswestry, the Rt Revd Paul Thomas. The Dean also attended the Prayer Book society seNice at Chichester Cothedral and stepped in as the after dinner speaker on the doy. The Dean os president of the Bottle Choral Society has wotked with the society to enable them to relocate. gather and rehearse at St Mary's. The Choral Society are continuing to grow and perform concerts in the church. Our resident Organist Mr Vincent Wade has become the Musical Director of Ihe Society and has helped to reinvigorate the Chow along wth the Secretary. Mrs Christine Smith. Occasional Offices There were three baptisms. one confirmotion. ten weddings. nineteen funerals and three buriols ol ashes which took place at St Mary's as well as an Archdeacon'5 Visitation service for the swearing in ol Churchwardens. Overvlew arKI Ilnancial revlew of Ihe l. The full PCC met eight times in 2023. They considered o number of significant issues: in particular. Ihey considered in detail proposa15 for the refurbishment of the Church Hall. They also met with the DAC and the Quinquennial Architect Mr John Bailey to explore the reordering of St Mary's as part of the MAP in relation to increosing tourism and heritage. 2. The Dean and PCC would like to extend a special ihank-you to the Pastorol Care leam, who maintoin o high level of contact and care for fhe eldedy. the sick, and housebound. Many thanks also to the Sacrislon and his assistant for their faithful services and to all who clean and decorate both churche5 On a regular bosis and to those who help to provide ond serve refreshments after setvices. The PCC had pledged £28.(K)O lo the Diocese of Chichester. a carefulty considered and budgeted omount based on expected income and avoilable resetves. However, our addilionol payment from 2022 of£3950 was also added to our pledge for 2023. but this was not noticed unto the year end. Therefore. the PCC has paid £31950 for 2023. 4. The PCC received a frJrther payment from the reslricted Tom Long Legacy. which was added lo funds in the Deon and Churchwordens CCLA account to earn inlerest until it is needed. 5. St Mory's Church was delighted to host concerts again and welcomed both Battle Choral and the Whatlington Singers for chorol concerts. A new iniliotive
has been to work w7th Wealden Music Box to help local world clcjss musicians rebuild Iheir coreers and livelihood after Covid wth St Mary's as one of their venues. 6. St Mary's Church wos pleosed to hosl another fundraising event for Ukraine. at which £3034 wos received in donations and purchases and forwarded appropriately. 7. The PCC made a lotal of £8.363 of ovlward giving donations from income received. Thi5 included money from the Ukraine fundraising event. the Christmas Tree Festival, Remembrance Setvices and the Civic 5eNice for the Coronation among others. 8. St hAory's Church Flower Guild conlributed lo the Celebration Coronotion Service by arranging ond displaying locolly and sustainably sourced flowers in line with the King's love of noture ond green policies. 9. St Mary's Churchjoined wth much of the country in celebrating the Coronation of King Chat1es111. Avigil was held and a Civic Service held with the otlendance of fhe Deputy Lieutenont ond High Sheriff. 10. The baby and toddlergroup Busy Bees continuesto flourish underthe leadership of Mrs Sue Blackman. Mrs Margaret Roberts and Mrs Angle Ducketl. Sessions are quickly booked up via the Eventbrile app, remaining knll oll yeor. wth requests for more sessions. More volunteers would be required to enable this to hoppen and provide this much needed care. I l. The Battle branch of the Bexhill Foodbank continued to operate from the Church Hall and is increasingly busy. This 15 an ecumenical venture and is in line with the diocesan encouragement to 'serve the common good,. The PCC charges for this use of the premises. but gives a 99% rebate as part of its endeavours to 'serve the common good.. The foodbank have increased their giving to help mitigate the rising fuel costs. 12. The Christmas Tree Festival took place over the weekend of 251h_26th November and Ihe subs6quant fortnight. The church was very busy and the weekend was a great success. Three charities were sent £ICKX) each from the funds raised, and further monie5 went to the Flower Guild. Mothers, Union and the Pastoral Core funds. 13. During 2023, Mrs Jan Collins fvjlfilled the Parish Safeguarding Officer role. There were no safeguarding 55sues during the year and the PCC has complied with its duty to have 'due regard, to Ihe House of Bishops, Safeguarding Policy ond Practice Guidance. 14. Volunteers - The Chvrch depends on the voluntary setvices of many helpers in order to offer such o wde range of octivities. This is increosingty more difficult due lo the nature of the society in which we live and the increasing demands on parents and grandparents.

When plonning our activilies for the year. the incumbent and the PCC have considered the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit and. in particular. the specific guidance on 'charithes for Ihe advancement of religion,. In particular, we lry to enable local people to live out their foith os part of our parish community through: Worship and prayer: leaming about the Gospel; and developing their knovdedge of. and trust in Jesus," the occasional offices, and administering the sacraments. Provision of pastoral core for people living in Ihe parish- Missionary and ovtreach work.
