## MISSION STATEMENT:

We are now living in a time where we are seeing the level of criminal activities and general public disorder in our streets and neighbourhood, perpetrated by young people, escalate to epidemic levels. Some of the key contributing factors are drug/alcohol related, unemployment, inadequate affordable community facilities for young people, truancy leading to poor education, mental illness, low socio-economic background, the breakdown of family dynamics, behavioural problems to mention a few. The list is exhaustive. There is also the other perspective of health issues as mentioned previously mental illness but also obesity is on the increase in children/young people due to the more sedentary lifestyle influenced by technology.

We believe everything we are encountering in society at large is primarily due to choices, poor choices which is depicted by our environment and lack of opportunities, whether perceived or actual. These factors fashion ones mindset which translates out in behavioural responses.

Thai Boxing Community Centre strongly believe that this self-destructive mindset/behaviour can be changed. We believe that every young person can, when given the opportunity, in a place of acceptance, with guidance, support and encouragement can aspire and achieve remarkable things. We believe every person counts.

## 2023/24: A Year of Success for the Thai Boxing Community Centre

## Our Achievements and Milestones

2024 was a phenomenal year for the Thai Boxing Community Centre (TBCC). Our new Catford branch had an extraordinary start, reaching out to over 250 young people through our project with Go London. This partnership allowed us to establish a strong presence in the community quickly, making our programs and support accessible to those who needed it most.

## **CHANGING LIVES PROJECT BOOST –** Award for All

Our Changing Lives Project continued to thrive, thanks to the generous funding we received. This project, which targets young people aged 6 to 17 in Croydon and the surrounding areas, was able to run successfully for another year. We received £10,000 from the National Lottery Awards, which enabled us to offer free weekly Thai Boxing sessions to disadvantaged youth. These sessions were instrumental in steering young participants away from negative influences and towards a path of self-improvement and resilience

## Project Details:

Free weekly Thai Boxing sessions for disadvantaged youth in Croydon and nearby areas.

Grant covers:

- Equipment purchase

- Publicity of project

- Rent

- Sessional workers’ pay.

## Impact:

The project successfully improved many young people’s lives through Thai Boxing who were appreciative of another year running of the project.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the National Lottery Community.

## **Mothers Only Fitness** -Sport England

TBCC, once again, was successful and grateful in receiving a grant from Sport England to fund the running of its Mothers Only Fitness sessions. The total received is £6,010. The Mothers Only Fitness offers free fitness and exercise sessions for mothers, twice a week at both our Croydon and Catford Community Centres.

The project aimed to engage 40 women over a period of six months, starting from 1[st] August 2023.

## Project Impact

- Many mothers formed new friendships, reducing social isolation

- Improved fitness and adoption of healthier lifestyles

- Successfully met our target of 40 participants

The funding was used to cover:

- Promotional costs

- Hall rental contributions

- Coaches' fees

We extend our gratitude to Sports England for their continued support.

## **Jack Petchey Foundation** : Celebrating Young People's Achievements

Empowering the Next Generation Through Grants and Support

We have had another year to recognise and celebrate the great achievement of our young people, be it small or big. We believe everyone matters and deserves to be cheered along their individual journey of development. We have been able to carry this out three times throughout the year.

## Project Impact

The young winners were awarded with £300 funding each to spend on anything to benefit the centre and the other service users. They choose to purchase various equipment to enhance their performance and experience of the sport as well as give more young people the opportunity to participate.

The Jack Petchey Foundation’s dedication to celebrating and supporting young people’s achievements is a testament to the belief that every young person has the potential to make a difference. Through recognition, financial support, and developmental opportunities, the Foundation is helping to shape the leaders of tomorrow and build a brighter future for all.

## Go London - Catford Community Muaythai

Thai Boxing Community Centre was proud to be successfully selected for the GO! London Partnership which is birthed by the amalgamation of Funders in London which included the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Sport England, London Marathon Foundation, London Marathon Events and London Sport. All these funders, invested in London, to support almost 18,000 young Londoners through the use of physical activities and sports. We were awarded £30,000 to be proportioned through the twelvemonth period and received £15,000 to date.

## Impact

The impact of the program is evident in the stories of personal growth and resilience shared by many of the young people involved. By engaging in Muaythai, they have gained confidence, discipline, and a positive outlook on life. The transformative power of physical activity and sport has been clearly demonstrated through the achievements and progression of our participants.

We excelled our target of 150 participants for this project by reaching out to over 250 young people in the Catford and surrounding areas with most participants staying through out entire project once they started. Our team of volunteers & instructors were brilliant, and project was able to develop new assistant instructors creating work opportunities.

We would like to thank the GO! London Funders for the opportunity to participate in this initiative which has been a great success attracting 250 young people. Every session was vibrant and fused with enthusiasm and energy

## Final Words

The Thai Boxing curriculum was integrated into the school sports programs through our collaboration with Teachsport. Classes were conducted after-school. This approach ensured that a wide range of students could benefit from the training. The sessions were led by our instructors, who brought not only their expertise in Thai Boxing but also a passion for teaching and mentoring young people.

The feedback from both students and parents has been overwhelmingly positive. Quite a few of the young participants have reported increased confidence, improved physical fitness, and a greater sense of discipline. Parents have noted positive changes in their children's behaviour and attitudes, attributing these improvements to the values instilled through Thai Boxing training.

In conclusion, the collaboration between our organization and Teach Sport has not only introduced a beneficial physical activity to South London schools but has also fostered a supportive environment where young people can thrive. We look forward to nurturing this partnership and seeing the continued growth and success of our students.

None of these achievements would have been possible without the continuous support from our funders:

- Award for All

- Jack Petchey Foundation

- Sport England

- GO! London

We would like to thank you all for your contributions.

Also thank you to ASKI for your support and financial support contributions throughout the year. This has not gone unnoticed.

To the team of volunteers/sessional workers thank you all for your dedication. Their hard work have been the driving force behind our success, enabling us to deliver impactful projects and create meaningful change in the community.

As we look back on 2024, we are filled with pride and gratitude for the progress we have made. We are excited to build on this momentum in the coming years, continuing to expand our programs, reach more individuals, and make a positive difference in the lives of those we serve. Our journey is far from over, and with the unwavering support of our community, we are confident that we will achieve even greater heights.

In conclusion, 2024 was a year of remarkable growth and accomplishment for the Thai Boxing Community Centre. Our new branch in Catford, the success of the Changing Lives Project, our support for mothers, and our expanded community work in schools are all testaments to our dedication to improving the lives of those in our community.

We are immensely grateful to everyone who has supported us and look forward to another year of making a difference.
