Message from PSC CEO Ruth Pearse

2022/23 has been a really challenging year for families as the impact of Covid is much longer term than originally thought and the cost-of-living crisis has been particularly difficult for families of children/young with special educational needs and disabilities.

Charities have had to make difficult decisions with less funding and at the same time the level of need has been unprecedented. Parenting Special Children had to make the hard decision to scale back some of our services due to lack of funding, fortunately at the end of 2023 we received funding from three national funders, The National Lottery for our Trauma and Attachment Service and Children in Need and Comic Relief for our children and young people’s groups. Longer term funding brings added stability to PSC and therefore to the families we support.

We are also very grateful for all of the funders and donors who have enabled us to continue this much needed work and fund a wide range of services, the generosity has been heartwarming and much appreciated.

Message from PSC CEO Ruth Pearse

Despite all of the challenges I am so proud of how Parenting Special Children has continued to provide holistic support to families of neurodivergent children and young people and those with SEND and early life trauma. Families tell us the support we offer ‘is life changing’.

Please do take time to read the impact report to see the difference that PSC brings to families.

Finally I want to acknowledge the excellent team at Parenting Special Children who bring lived experience, a wealth of knowledge and understanding of their service area and above all kindness and compassion. We start 2024 in a more sustainable financial position which is very encouraging and enables the charity to plan ahead, being aware of unmet needs and how we might meet them in Berkshire and surrounding areas, using the expertise that we have and developing services to ensure that families are supported and thrive.

Parenting Special Children Financial Results : FY19 – FY23 (5 years)

Key points:

• FY23: total income of £273,325 resulting in a net surplus of £22,000 (FY22: £17,000)

• New 5 year National Lottery grant – resuming of 1:1 support and TAS services (paused since January 2023)

• Other major funders include Children in Need, Comic Relief and Postcode Society Trust

• Continued expansion of all income streams - commissioned services 12% of total income (10% in FY22)

• Reserves going forward to FY24 of c8.1 months (includes designated website funding of £17.3k), a very strong and sustainable position

Helpline Case Study

Parent experiencing challenges with their child. Child on CAMHS neurodevelopmental pathway, had witnessed Domestic violence and experienced trauma. Child had experienced challenges at school and no longer attending school.

Attended all 3 Parent/ carer Autism workshops online, Sensory Processing workshop, Community support group, received ongoing helpline support.

Feedback from parent:

‘PSC were so sympathetic, compassionate and offered advice, ideas, signposting and recommendations of further support from PSC including the TAS service’.

Support Group feedback

My first introduction to PSC was their ADHD workshops which I found very informative and helpful. They are presented very professionally, but in such a way that you feel at ease and safe within the group.

Myself and my husband have also been fortunate enough to receive 1 to 1 support which was invaluable to help us work as a team and understand each other’s perspective of our family situation.

I regularly attend the monthly support group. It's a lovely group and an opportunity to meet people in similar situations who understand what it's like to be a parent or carer to children with SEN. I feel lucky to live in a town with the support and friendship PSC gives people like me.

Looking Ahead 2024

In 2024 we are going to extend the age range of our children and young people’s services to include a transition group, this age group is very important as they often don’t feel ready to leave the safety of a group but adulthood brings a lot of change and new services so a group providing relevant information and support is needed. We are also going to launch young people peer support so that they can be role models to the younger children/young people and bring their wealth of experience to support others.

We have worked hard to secure funding for a new website, so we look forward to working with Orange Grove to launch the new website in the Spring, our website is creaking at the seams and is integral to the support we offer families so is much needed.

As always, we are quick to respond to families’ needs and so we will continue to do the same, we have learnt from Covid that one needs to be ready to respond quickly but also key is to listen to families, we will continue to do that whatever 2024 brings.

Respective The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. responsibilities of The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year trustees and examiner under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

• examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,

• to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and

• • to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

• Basis of independent My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given examiner’s statement by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner's statement

In connection with my examination, no material matters have come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect,:

• the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or

• the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or

• • the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
