## **Annual Report September 2021 – August 2022**

https://www.parentingspecialchildren.co.uk/

## Message from PSC CEO Ruth Pearse

2022 was a very special year for PSC as we celebrated 15 years of supporting families of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. The Countess of Wessex met staff, trustees and families at a special reception in Reading Town Hall as part of the celebration. It was a wonderful experience for everyone.

The demand on charities is difficult both locally and nationally, with less funding available and yet against this challenging backdrop the demand for our support continues to grow. As always we work very hard to raise funds through fundraising events, funding streams and commissioning which continues to be an important source of income.

Covid continues to have ongoing repercussions with families still very much adjusting to the impact of isolation, compounded with the cost of living crisis. This is illustrated in the growth of demand on our PSC helpline, a staggering 173% increase in the number of calls received 2 compared to last year.

## Message from PSC CEO Ruth Pearse cont…

As a charity we continue to develop and evolve our services, so we were delighted to be able to extend our geographic coverage with more families in need of our services to be able to access PSC online.

We have two new advisory boards, a BME advisory board and a young people's neurodiversity board as well as an existing advisory board of academics all of whom have lived experience. We very much value their input.

We would like to thank all of the partners that we work with in Berkshire and for the local and national funders who enable us to provide much needed support to families of children with special educational needs and disabilities. Ruth Pearse, Founder & CEO

_‘I was keen to become a Trustee at PSC because, as a service user, I could see what a profound difference the charity makes. The advice , training and services that PSC provides significantly improves lives for both parents and children. In some cases, it’s not an overstatement to say PSC may have saved lives._

_I wanted to do what I can to support the great work the charity does. As I have a governance focused role in financial services, I thought I could put some of that experience to use as a Trustee. Working as a Trustee has been fascinating and humbling in equal measure. It’s a real privilege to work alongside such a diligent and driven team.’_

**Independent examiner's report on the accounts**

## **Section A Independent Examiner’s Report**

**Report to the trustees/** PARENTING SPECIAL CHILDREN **members of On accounts for the year** 30 November 2022 **Charity no** 1141172 **ended (if any) Set out on pages**

1-3

**Respective** The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. **responsibilities of** The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year **trustees and examiner** under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to:

   - examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,

   - to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and

   - • to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

- **Basis of independent** My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given **examiner’s statement** by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

In connection with my examination, no material matters have come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect,:

- the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or

- the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or

- • the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
