Chairman’s report for the AGM 8[th] October 2024.

I will expand on the chairman’s letter contained in the blue brochure.

It has been another successful year with sustained good numbers of members. There has been around 60 plus lapsed memberships this year, but this has been redressed by a similar number of new members. This is due in part by word of mouth of how good your u3a is, articles in local magazines and contact numbers for enquiries being published locally. Please keep on promoting your u3a.

Thank you to our group leaders for their dedicated hard work, facilitating the groups, which enable the u3a to offer a wide range of activities.

Can I remind you to log into our updated website, run by Chris and Nick. This is an excellent means of keeping up to date, with all kinds of interesting information and photos of what you have been getting up to.

On Thursday 28[th] November 2024, there will be an open meeting at the Catholic Church hall for members from different groups to

come together. Spaces are limited, so book your place early. Chris & Nick Flux (web managers) have agreed to give a short demo of the u3a website.

Wendy Brown is stepping down from the committee on medical grounds, and we take this opportunity to thank Wendy for her very active involvement on the committee, and we wish her well.

We live in an ever changing and developing world, and the u3a costs continue to rise, year on year. This is the stark reality, and change does not always come easy, but it is how we cope with those changes and how we adapt by working together that will help us achieve the best outcome for our u3a.

The Third Age Trust will be holding it’s AGM on 16[th] October 2024. There is a proposal for change in governance, and it will comprise of a small board of 10 members and an elected council, made up of 25 elected regional members. If you want to know more log into their website, under “Fit for the Future”

I have been having regular zoom meetings nationally with the Chair’s Forum, and we discuss all things relevant to u3as. Such as;

promoting u3a, attracting volunteers, finance, and constructive thoughts on what the trust are doing.

The committee looks at the u3a financial position at every meeting, with the help of our treasurer. We anticipate the u3a spending will be more than our income this year, and membership will increase for this coming year. The membership fee will rise to £30, and no increase for the outings membership. The committee will continue to look at the u3a costs, and what adjustments can be achieved. This increase still represents outstanding value for money.

This is enough from me, except to thank all of you for your interest and support for Sawston Area u3a. John Gray. Chairman. October 2024.
