This period is 36"$ days and covers fmm l February 2020to 30 January 2021. The prior period is the year to 31 January 2020. The trustees have adopted the provisions of the Statement of Recommended Practice ISORPI "Ac¢ountin8 and Reportin8 by Ch•ritie< in preparin8 the annual report and financial statements of the charitv. Obie¢tsves and Acli¥ities object1$ and Alms The Trustees have paid due regard to guidance issued by the Charity Commission in deciding what activities the Charity should undertake in order to further the charitable purpose5 for the public benefit. These activities are summarised below. Northern Pride wès formed in AV51 2(KJ7 after a br gap in Pride activities following the closure of Pride on the Tyne. A research project was commissioned and carried out by MET Ltd to establish what the North East LGBTQ+ community would like from a Pride event. These results were fed back into the community in May 2007 and from this feedback a group of volunteers came forward and formed the first Northern Pride committee. Northern Pride was incorporated as a limited cornpany in 2009 to give the organisation greater accountability and protection and is a registered charity. In 2018 the charity was rebranded, and the new core principles were introduced. Protect Protect LGBTQ+ rights already won and charnpion these whilst supporting the fght to end equality indifferences that remain at home and abroad. Promote Promote a healthy body and mind through acce55 to support and education for the communtty and our strai8ht allies. Provide Provide a serres of LGBTQ+ events Includi our annual festNal to bring communities closer together and celebrate our diversity. These core prinuples are the foundations to enable Northem Pride to proudly promote Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans8ender, Queer plus, cultLTrre through public celebration of our heritsge and enga8in8 in education and cultural activities that enrich the community whilst raising awareness of the issue's LGBTQ+ people face, buildin8 mutual respect and working to end homophobia, biphobia and transphobia bullying IHBTI and discrimination. As an LGBTQ+ charity the airns of Northern Pride are the promotion of equality and diversity for the publ1¢ benefit by al The elimination of discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation. gender identity and expre55ion. and sex characteristics bl Advancing education and raisir6 awareness in equaltty ènd diversity issues face by LG8TQ+ people- and Page 3
Northern Pride Events Limited cl Cultivating a sentiment in favour of equality and di¥ersrty to create a safe environment where LGBTQ+ people can promote and explore their culture and work in the interests of the public benefit to remove any Social exclu5bOn. We achieve our aims and objective by holding variou5 events, workshops. seminars and ¢ampaigns throughout the year which culrninate5 into the pride festival in July. The first of these pride festivals were held in July 2C#)8 and was attended by over 2,5 people. The three41ay festival now includes a March through Newcastle city with entertainment, various LGBTQ+ safe 20nes. information stalls, and market stalls auoss the Town Moor, Newcastle plus an array of satellite events on the buildup to the festival which now attracts over 40,000 people. Slgnlficant Arfb¥ltles and Athlevements Like most charities and companies across 2020. Northern Pride Everrts Ltd was significantly impatted by the pandemic and COVID-19. A5 an events-based charity supporting the LGBTQ+ community, all in person activity was stopped. After a short learning period we were able to launch dItal content and seNices. These including live panel discussion, debates, digital music events, LGBTQ+ History Month programming and 81ack History Month events. Whilst we saw a de¢rease of 68% in fvndin& we were still able to deliver a Northern Pride festival. this time on social media and the radio. We were also able to take part in the Global Pride. an online digital event broadcasted across the world. Whilst income was down. we ensured that our spend mirrored this. resulting in a reduction by 75% against 2019. Income was from local and national grant programmes. including COVID recovery fvndin& whilst spend was lar8ely used on the delivery of digital content. Oue to a concentrated effort to marntain low spendin& and maximise cornmunity support during the pandemic, we've been able to increase our surplus funding by c£30k1199%1. Publlc Benefft During the di8ital pride event Ireplacement for the festival). we saw over 130k views and over 2k reactions and over Ik interartions during the live streams. Northern Pride has received overwhelming SUPPOrt during the pandemic, with many ¢ommunity members commentin8 on our digital content and how well the charity has adapted, yet still provided a public service. Volunteers The events, including those via digital methods, wouldn't be possible without our fantastic volunteers who wve up their time to 5UPPOrt us. This can be as little as bein8 a march steward on the main day, helping with collertions round the scene. arranging fundraisin8 events or a more active role on the main committee as a co- ordinator or dirertor irustee. Golng concern As we continue to live through the pandemic and in lSOn events begin again. an ongoing toncern for Northern Pride will be to continue the positive changes seen in financial management and income vs expenditure. Our alms continue to operate on a income driven approach. Satellite events and the main festival spend must be matched with appropriate income streams to ensure sustainability- We acknowledee that funding could be challenging post pandemK due to mary of our sporsors and supporters being from the hospitality industry which has been hardest hrt. Elsewhere. our concerns around the festival growth and the UK Pride status remains. Ivs importani that the team continue to improve on the robust management structure. policie5 and procedures, which has improved this period with ihe On)arding of a HR Oirector and with the reiurn of a trusted Fin3n¢e Dirertor. In addition, community donations have reached an all-time low. down to around £0.60 contribution per festival ttendee, and as donation5 are vital to our income, the team have already began working on new digitsl ways to generate regular community donations. Finally, as a voluntary led committee, some administrative tasks are delayed or take longer than necessarily. ivs vital to maintain full operational perfom)ance. the team look at how to problem solve these ¢on¢ems which unfortunately has been delayed due to the pandemic.
