FRIENDS OF THE DARTMOOR HILL PONY- CHAIRMAN'S REPORT FOR 2026
Our main nev￿ for this year must b8 the improvements made to our bam HQ. We ow8 the
owners a massive thank you to f￿ the restoration of the bam floor drainage whth is amazing
lo support our efforts towards Ihe fvtU￿ of the ponies on Dartmoor. These restoration works
to the bam, originally built in 1996, mean thal we ￿.
Manage water ingress from land njn-off. the reduction of brown vtster leaving the bam,
so protecting the health of nearby streamslriverslwatercourses.
Improve the standard of basic facilrties for volunteers working in the bam.
Improve animal welfare for p￿leS in the bam.
Encourage volunteering and improve volunteer w)rkirwJ comfort. which li turn helps us
help the ponies.
Educale volunteers and followers in the land management of Dartmoor commons and
benefrt of the ponies.
Improve the opportunity for the volunteering public lo understand and appreciate the
importance of drrfting and pounding unmarked poniès.
Support well-beng wojects for children and adults. whether physically or mentally,
through inleraclion wllh the ponies other people involved in the projects to secure
and enhance Ihe lives of ponies on and off the commons of Dartmoor.
The work to ensure the genetic mapping of the breeding stock on the commons continués,
we have an amazing team to thank this year for their part in this work specifically. our main
aim this coming year wll be lo get Ihe DNA of those animals mapped.
Websrte changes are thanks to Jo Druett and also to Aan Davie5 vtho has b8en edriing our
website for a long time.
This has been a hard year for us to help with preparation for Ihe pony sa￿$ as. due to a
change in policy laken up by Rendells. the ponies to have a microchip implanled and
silhouette completed prior to the sale. The vei came wrth us to10 each pony going lo the
sale and provide correct pa￿￿￿￿k was fNe days work in all and a few evenings
alongsid8.
At The Grange. Ihe breeders, sale was an wnprovement on last year and as ever, Kivells
must be thanked for supporting this event. We enjoyed an interesting talk at the start of sale
8tx)ut taming ponies.
An outbreak crf strangles from one pony herd made for a very lense time Fost sale. but all
seems to t* ok in the end.
Pony homing from HQ was 35 F￿n￿s. V48 castraled 42 ￿)￿￿ since Awil.
The big p18n now is lo get the herd records lo be digrtal and a follcm through once homed
onto a Darimoor Hill Pcny record heKI at Pet ID for ponies vtho have left the moor.
Conservalion grazing ponies are provrng therr value and we hope wll be rec(yJnized wth in
the LUMG plans for evKlence gathering on grazing numbers. This is because, arthough
DHPS are now on an even fo￿Ing for payments with catt18 and other recc4Jnized rare
breeds. their future is not secure if payment only happens when incentivised by heavily
reduced stocking numbers.
