Chairmans reportfor year ending March 2024.
This has not been an easyyear for us. we were at the top end of our number of ponies
we can care forthrough out the winter, whlch means the feed bills and then the gel¢Jing
Ivets bills are large.
We have worked with Dartmoor14111 Farmers using thelr ancient grazlng rights to
common pony herds on the moor since 1995. We have worked with members of the
DEFRA Equine ID team since 2003 and was one ofthe team who designed the first and
subsequent passport derogations which means we understand wh8t we need foi the
benefit of our last semi wild pony herds of England.
Complying to regulation about the identification of semi-wild Qartmoor Hill Ponies in
different Sltuations is an on going task.
These projects include:_
Supplyingsupport to pony keepers In order to keep within agri-environment
scheme number limits.
The Dartmoof Hill Pony Association holds the traditional annual Pony Drift Sale.
supported by the Friends Charity promotion 8nd after care for ponies and new
owners.
The Drift Sale Is staffed by Frlends ofthe Dartmoor Hlll Pony volunteers,
producing temporary id documents and applying lor passports in new owners
names to enable traceability of ponies once theyleave Dartmoor.
We find a domesticated future for approximately 450 ponies from Dartmoor
herds each year (that's more than half of the annual foal crop). All of which must
be passported.
The charitycontinues to resource genetic analysis of the pony herds on
Dartmoor. workingwith members of the Dartmoor Hill Pony Association,
Aberystwyth University, Neogen, Weatherbys Scientific and the Rare Breed
Survival Trust. this genetic mapping is very important to ensure a payment for
the Dartmoor HilLponyto compete with other grazing animals for a placeto
stand on Dartmoor as valued.
In discussion with Natural England on low grazing numbers as part of HLS
8greementS and wh8t this means to DHP numbers.
It is therefore our role in the Friends of the Dartmoor Hill Pony to continue to work
closely with DEFRA Equine ID regarding the identif ication and passporting of ponies
sold at that agricultural sale and the impBCt of changes in regul8tion.
In these roles and projects. we work closely with other areas which common pony herds
particularly the New Forest- and other DEFRA departments such as the FSA, the
VMD, AHVLA and Trading standards.
This charity undert8kes numerou$ prolects which support members ofthe Dartmoor
Hill Pony Association to ensure that they can continue keeping a pony herd. This
incLudes year-round Sales, Taming ponies to be a domesticated pet. getting colts
castrated so that they can become 8 domesticated gelding, promoting and marketing all
of Dartmoor's pony herds.
