Para 1.17
To promote, develop and maintain the
public education in, and appreciation of, the
art and science of orchestral and
instrumental music in all its aspects, by the
resentation of ublic concerts and recitals.
We prepared for four concerts in this
period. on 27 March, 3 July and 4
December 2022 and on 26 March 2023.
Each of these involved 10 weeks of
rehearsal time beforehand that enabled all
players the opportunity lo acquire
considerable knowledge of the music and
introduced them all to some pieces by
female composers that were not well
known, notably on 26 March 2023 the
second ever performance of Imogen
Holst's piece Persephone. All concerts
were open to the public, and our conductor
provided a short oral introduclion to each
piece of music Ihat supplemented
information in the programme notes. On
28129 January, we held a weekend
workshop on Beethoven's 91h Symphony
that was very well attended by players,
many of whom do not play regularly wilh
the orchestra and by singers, and which
culminated in an informal performance
open to members of the public. The
workshop was attended by members of
Apollo Music Projects, a charity Ihat lakes
live music into primary schools in Hackney
and Islington, and one of their trustees
gave short talks to the assembled
musicians and the audience about their
work. On 8 March 2023, two of the
trustees went into Elizabeth Garrett
Anderson School to provide workshops to
GCSE students on female composers,
particularly Ethel Smyth and her role in the
Women's Suffrage movement. We also ran

Financial Review
Review of the charity's
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21
Al the end of the period, due to the suetsss
of the fundraising events, the orchestra's
financial reserves had been restored lo
around £15,000. They had fallen lo just
over £9,000 al the same time th& previous
year, due to the impact of the Covid 19
pandemic. The orchestra had over 30
regular m8mbers who paid lermly
subscription costs and regular COn￿rt
audiences of over l 00. Projections of
expenditure per term continued to exceed
income, but Ihe trustees planned to
compensate for this by additional
fundraisers and in the longer term through
the Orchestra Tax Relief scheme.
The trustees have agreed to hold sufficient
reserves to enable it to meet the
orchestra's estimated financial
commitments in any one term by way of
payments to the professional musicians
involved in the orchestra (conductor and
section leaders
and church hire costs.
