Annual Trustees’ Report

Chairman’s Report for the AGM – 2[nd] December 2025

Sussex Tornados Cheerleaders Date of Last AGM: October 2024.

Introduction

As Chairman of Sussex Tornados Cheerleaders, I am pleased to present this year’s Annual Trustees’ Report for the period 1st August 2024 to 31st July 2025.

For those new to the organisation, a brief background: Helen and I founded Sussex Tornados Cheerleaders in 1998. It has always been a fully volunteer-run, not-for-profit Cheerleading programme. Our dedicated coaches receive no remuneration for the significant time and effort they invest, not only in coaching, competing, and travelling, but also the many behindthe-scenes tasks required to keep the programme growing, achieving, and enjoying.

On 4th July 2012, we became a registered charity and adopted a formal constitution. Our aim is to provide a facility for children, youth, and young adults within the community, where they can learn championship-level cheerleading as well as life skills that support their future development.

We would like to extend a special welcome to Mrs Kelly Alderton , who joined the Board of Trustees on 1st August 2024 . Kelly was one of our original Tornados and our first ever Junior Athlete. Her daughter Esme is now part of our Allstar teams, and we are pleased to have Kelly’s experience and passion on the Board.

In accordance with our constitution, Trustees may be appointed following a recommendation by existing Trustees and confirmed via a majority vote. Our full rules and constitution are available on our website.

Governance and Compliance

The Board of Trustees continues to ensure that the charity operates responsibly, transparently, and in line with Charity Commission expectations. Key governance activities this year included:

A core ongoing focus is Child Protection.

Our Child Protection Officer, Helen Best, maintains our reviewed and up-to-date Child Protection Policy. This policy is available on request. Please speak to Helen directly if you have any questions or concerns; her contact details are also available on our website.

We also maintain a suggestion box near the gym entrance. These suggestions are collected and reviewed during Trustee meetings and discussed or actioned where necessary.

Coaching and Programme Development

Carley Johnson, our Programme Director, continues to grow the programme year after year while maintaining a full-time job and raising Romany, who, fortunately, shares our passion for cheerleading.

Carley oversees all coaching operations, including training athletes who progress into coaching roles. This approach strengthens leadership within the programme and equips young people with valuable life skills. Carley also ensures all coaches remain appropriately qualified, with their certifications maintained and updated.

Tel: 07547 625 728 – Email: Info@sussextornados.com

Our coaches contribute countless hours outside the gym planning sessions, developing choreography for our award-winning routines, organising uniforms, and ensuring athletes know where they need to be for every training session and competition. Their dedication is central to the success of the programme, and we are extremely grateful for their commitment.

A special thank-you goes to Jordan and Hannah, who have embraced their roles as Senior Coaching Staff and continue to support Carley in all aspects of programme delivery.

We would also like to acknowledge Abbie Wickens , a valued member of our Senior Coaching Staff. In my original draft of this report, Abbie was still living her best life in Australia… however, she has since returned to the UK and will be rejoining the coaching team for the upcoming season — meaning she has completely ruined the first version of this report!

All jokes aside, we are thrilled to have her back. Abbie’s journey from athlete to coach has shaped her confidence and character, and we know she will continue to be an incredible asset to the programme.

Finally, we give our thanks to Ria Jones, who stepped back from coaching at the end of Season 27. We deeply appreciate her dedication and the many hours she gave to the programme. We wish her the very best and know she will always remain part of the Tornados family.

Fundraising, Sponsorship and Community Support

As a registered charity, we continue to pursue sponsorship opportunities and engage in fundraising to make our sport as accessible and affordable as possible. A Huge Thank you to Tracey Jones gives a lot of her free time to completing grant forms, wrapping raffle prizes and lots more we do not see to ensure we are raising as many funds as possible.

Sussex Tornados is a sport for all charity, and although rising costs remain a challenge, we are committed to keeping fees as low as possible while meeting essential expenses such as:

We also aim to support other local charities whenever possible. If any members have charities close to their hearts that we may be able to assist, please do let us know.

Financial Summary

Despite a challenging economic environment, the charity remains in a stable and wellmanaged financial position.

Key Financial Highlights (Year End: 31st July 2025)

Although expenditure exceeded income this year, the charity retains healthy reserves and continues to operate responsibly and sustainably. We remain committed to maintaining adequate reserves in line with best practice and ensuring all funds are used efficiently to further our charitable objectives.

It is important to note that the next quarter’s rent, service charge, and insurance payments fall due in September 2025, and planning for these forthcoming costs has been incorporated into our financial oversight and reserve management.

Overview of the Year

This year marked the incredible milestone of Season 27. It is amazing to think that 27 years ago, Helen and I began this journey with just the two of us and six friends. To now be concluding Season 27 feels truly remarkable.

We welcomed an outstanding 145 active members, male and female, ranging from 3½ to 26 years old, across 13 competitive teams. These athletes travelled across the UK—and even internationally—to compete against some of the best teams in the world.

As always, Carley and her team of dedicated coaches and team captains have taken the programme further than we ever imagined possible. Their hard work, commitment, and passion continue to elevate Sussex Tornados year after year.

I will now hand over to Carley to share the full details of what was achieved this year—there are simply too many successes to list here, and she is the best person to celebrate them with you. She will also outline the year ahead and what we can expect moving into the next season.

Thanks and Acknowledgements

On behalf of the Trustees, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who contributes to the ongoing success of Sussex Tornados Cheerleaders:

Your continued commitment strengthens our charity and inspires the work we do every day.

We will be here for the next 30 mins, should you have any questions or concerns, please let us know.

Declaration
