Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 30 June 2023
The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 June 2023. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and aims
The main objective of the charity is the advance of education for the public benefit in the field of musculoskeletal imaging.
The charity achieves this by:

Encouraging the study and improve the standard of knowledge of imaging of the musculoskeletal and allied systems;

Providing advise in the practice and training of musculoskeletal imaging; and
-
Arranging scientific meetings on topics of interest in the field of musculoskeletal imaging.
The charity's activities are deemed to be for the public benefit by increasing the skills and experience of skeletal radiologists who treat members of the general public.
ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Charitable activities
During the year 2022/23, the BSSR held several face to face an online meetings. The BSSR Grand Round series, started by Dr Priya Suresh, held severel online meetings. "Hip Pain" on 14th July 2022 with Dr Richard Whitehouse and Dr Sameer Shamshuddin; "Muscle Pain" on 6th October 2022 with Dr Dimitri Amiras, Dr Anne Kindelerre and Dr Clara Limbaeck from Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust; "Knee Pain" on 19th January 2023 with Dr Raj Chari and Dr Chee Yip Kan from Oxford University Hospital NHS Trust and 'Back Pain" in collaboration with BSNR on 27th April 2023 with Dr Richard Hughes, Dr David McKean and Dr. Ibrahim Azam from Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust and Dr Shubhabrata Biswas Consultant Neuroradiologist at The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Liverpool. These online meetings were free to attend and very well received.
The AGM and Business meeting was held on the 25th November 2022 at the Royal Geographical Society, London. The BSSR Spring Meeting was held at The Queens Hotel, Leeds on Wednesday 22nd March 2023 and organised by Dr Emma Rowbotham and Dr Richard Fawcett from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The meeting was very well attended with excellent streams on Sports and Spine Imaging and guest speaker Dr Jon Jacobson.
The Travelling Professor Post for 2022/23 was jointly awarded by the BSSR and the RCR to Dr Gina Allen from Oxford. The BSSR fund 50% of the value of the award which constitutes £5,000. The society once again, funded a prize of £100 for the society of Radiologists in Training Annual Meeting.
As in previous years, the society has outsourced administration and secretarial services to Biomedex to ensure the smooth running of the society. In addition to administration related to the website, Biomedex also helping run the online Grand Round Sessions, creating the registration and promotion websites for the BSSR Refresher course and members meeting.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS
The society will strive to provide further educational resource and content to the members through both face to face and online initiatives. Website development is now complete with the Education and Training page of the site now functioning and populated. Regular grand round teaching sessions are all underway and include collaboration with other societies and podcast productions covering recent research work in the field of Musculoskeletal Radiology. These have been loaded up to the website on the Education page.
Links continue with the Royal College of Radiologists, the International Skeletal Society and the European Society of Radiology. The BSSR will host a session at the Global Musculoskeletal Societies Joint Meeting is organized by International Skeletal Society (ISS) which will be held from 08th - 13th October, 2023 at Queen Elizabeth II Centre, London, England.
Following on from the previous successful 2021 online meeting run by the trainee members, plans have been made to have a further Trainee meeting in November 2023 using a similar platform. This is being organised by our two new trainee representatives on the committee, Dr Vilum Kalamar and Dr Elise Chua.
We have invited Dr Reto Sutter, Chief of Radiology at Balgrist University Hospital in Zurich/Switzerland, to be the guest speaker at the 2023 AGM and Member Meeting. Future Spring meetings are planned for March 2024 in Liverpool, with Guest Speakers Dr Christine Chung and Dr Reto Sutter, and March 2025 in Cambridge.
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Governing document
The charity is controlled by its governing document, a deed of trust, and constitutes a limited company, limited by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 2006.
The governing instrument under which the company operates its Memorandum & Articles of Association.
The directors are treated as trustees for Charities Act Purposes.
Recruitment and appointment of new trustees
The trustees of the charity constitute directors of the company for the purposes of company law. This report is also the directors' report as required by Sections 415 to 418 of the Companies Act 2006.
New trustees are appointed by either the existing trustees as and when a casual vacancy arises and are then formally appointed by the members in general meeting or by the members in general meeting.

Independent examiner's report to the trustees of British Society of Skeletal Radiologists ('the Company')
I report to the charity trustees on my examination of the accounts of the Company for the year ended 30 June 2023.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the charity's trustees of the Company (and also its directors for the purposes of company law) you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act').
Having satisfied myself that the accounts of the Company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the 2006 Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of your charity's accounts as carried out under Section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act'). In carrying out my examination I have followed the Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5) (b) of the 2011 Act.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe:
-
accounting records were not kept in respect of the Company as required by Section 386 of the 2006 Act; or 2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or
-
the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of Section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the accounts give a true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or
-
the accounts have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities (applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)).
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

The charitable company is entitled to exemption from audit under Section 477 of the Companies Act 2006 for the year ended 30 June 2023.
The members have not required the company to obtain an audit of its financial statements for the year ended 30 June 2023 in accordance with Section 476 of the Companies Act 2006.
The trustees acknowledge their responsibilities for
-
(a) ensuring that the charitable company keeps accounting records that comply with Sections 386 and 387 of the Companies Act 2006 and
-
(b) preparing financial statements which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company as at the end of each financial year and of its surplus or deficit for each financial year in accordance with the requirements of Sections 394 and 395 and which otherwise comply with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 relating to financial statements, so far as applicable to the charitable company.
These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions applicable to charitable companies subject to the small companies regime.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES
Basis of preparing the financial statements
The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)', Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention.
Income
All income is recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities once the charity has entitlement to the funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
Expenditure
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
Taxation
The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes.
Further explanation of the nature and purpose of each fund is included in the notes to the financial statements.
