## **Trustees Report 2022**

## **Introduction**

STORM Family Centre is a Domestic Violence charity that also has a focus on Youth Work and general wellbeing; the acronym S.T.O.R.M stands for: Support, Trust, Opportunity, Rebuilding and Motivation. Founded by Marie Hanson MBE in 2004, the vision was, and remains, to help people in need of support; particularly focusing on members of the local population within the black ethnic minority community as well as hard-to-engage groups. S.T.O.R.M is committed to addressing social issues such as sexual violence, sexual exploitation, domestic abuse, poverty, long-term unemployment, and youth crime.

The charity works hard to provide empowerment and opportunities for people to gain education and build confidence and has an open-door policy for our service users which we know helps as it breaks down barriers.

S.T.O.R.M works to help:

- **Anyone suffering from Domestic Violence**

- **Individuals suffering from low levels of depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues**

- **Single mothers gain the confidence and support they need to find their way into the workforce**

- **People who have been dependent on benefits for many years, to access the education and support necessary to get into employment and reach their goals**

- **Young people; to steer them away from knife and gun crime and give them the opportunity and motivation to change their lives**

- **Create community cohesion**

- **Raise awareness of local services**

- **Refugees and the Homeless**

We provide:

- One-to-one support with counselling, employability help and mentoring

- Information, Advice and Guidance regarding matters with employment

- Onsite childcare

- A variety of different accredited vocational training courses

**A very Special Thanks to all our funders and supporters through 2022 as without their help we could not continue to do the important community work that supports so many people.**

## **New initiatives:**

This year, S.T.O.R.M. launched its Just Giving page to receive donations. We are also glad to say that it includes the option for donors to Gift Aid their contributions; with this we hope to raise more funds for our work.

We have a new campaigner with our charity this year as well; we are very happy to have ‘Peacemaker’ actor Chukwudi Iwuji join us as an Ambassador. He now joins fellow Ambassador, fellow actor and friend Will Poulter alongside our Patron **Sabrina Elba** .

## **Services:**

S.T.O.R.M Family Centre continues providing valuable core services to residents within the Wandsworth and surrounding boroughs. The organisation continues to expand its services, to meet the needs of the people accessing its services.

## _**Combating domestic violence**_

Our counselling services thankfully continue for our service users as needed. We have one-to-one counselling, family counselling, sensory therapy and expressive art therapy, as all part of our services for help with healing from trauma. This year, we have helped 58 individuals through counselling.

Our ‘Stop the Silence, End Domestic Violence’ campaign against Domestic Violence launched in October of 2020 is still in the process of gaining signatures. We are still pushing for attention with this initiative to get hotel rooms available for women fleeing domestic violence, please see the link here: http://chng.it/2w4zM7Tyqj, and also our campaign video here: = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v Yd1bWrXHnlg

Our therapies carried out are listed below:

- Art therapy and Counselling for sufferers and survivors of domestic violence

- Support for people with concerns about their mental wellbeing

- Family counselling and support

- Sensory therapy

## _**Childcare provision**_

- **Wandsworth Early Education Years - Free Nursery Education Placements (FNEP)**

Has continued to support our Ofsted registered Nursery, funding 15-to-30-hour placements for children aged 2 to 4 years, whilst parents’ study at our centre or go to work. Our nursery is now term-time, and we cater for SEN and children who have suffered abuse

## _**E.S.O.L Classes & Back to Work IAG support (Information Advice and Guidance)**_

- **Building Better Opportunities** - which supports us with running our ESOL classes and IAG workshops, this particular work is all about helping refugees and asylum seekers. This year we have mainly helped individuals from Somalia and Ukraine

## _**Employability**_

- **Job shop -** This year we continued to help people in need of work and training. With our Infromation, Advice and Guidance sessions we tailored CVs and helped our clients in applying for work. We provide training and employment support with the support of our local partners which include; BUPA, Waitrose and Tesco

- This year we saw an average of 30% of all our clients gain employment as we constantly work to help those who have suffered job-loss

## **And we continue to run our:**

- **Food Bank -** Still in need and gratefully welcomed, we prepare and pack much needed food parcels for the vulnerable and those in need across the local community and further. We continue our work with **City Harvest** , and **FareShare** - who help us with these gratefully received food donations for our Food Bank and special occasions

- **Befriending Lunch group -** This year saw our Lunch Group continue with regular and **new** guests as usual. Healthy food was once again on the menu as we catered to our community members. Regular announcements are made on Nextdoor.com, alongside our usual social media platforms of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and all our dishes are prepared by CEO Marie Hanson MBE herself

## **Courses:**

This year we have launched into providing **Levels 3 to 5** with accredited courses for Childcare, Teaching Assistant and the full Teacher Diploma (DET). S.T.O.R.M has continued to build its relationship with outside providers to ensure we provide up-to-date courses and opportunities for our learners to access.

- **Teaching Assistant NVQ Level 3 courses, Childcare NVQ Level 3 courses –** These new courses were launched in December with its induction and assessments; due to go live early in 2023. These courses also include approaches in Special Educational Needs (SEN) such as Dyslexia Awareness - plus additional Special Educational Needs (SEN) aspects

- **Continuous Professional Development for TA learners through helping secure placements regarding courses**

## **Our special events in 2022**

**Women’s Conference**

Our Annual Women’s Conference took place on March 10[th] this year, and it was at the wonderful venue of the **Hotel Rafayel** in Battersea by the river. There to empower women and girls, this event features encouraging talks each year from people with lived experience or simply at the forefront of campaigning for safety and freedom from abuse.

This year we had presentations from **Chris Steven Green OBE** - Founder of the **White Ribbon Campaign** , **Shaun Bailey MP** - MP for West Bromwich West, **Margaret Keverian Ali** - UK Director of the **Universal Peace Federation** , and **Robin Marsh** UK Secretary General for the UPF.

Our warm thanks to **SJ Heany** and her brilliant **Jazz Band** for a great performance on the day, as well as to **Lux Luz Candles** for once again doing their marvellous candle making workshop, and to **LUSH Cosmetics** for their kind donations again as well.

Our CEO Marie Hanson led out a moving tribute to **Jamal Edwards** , who we sadly lost this year – as we played the video that he contributed to for STORM’s 2020 ‘ **End Domestic Violence** ’ Campaign. This year’s Conference was entitled ‘Woman of Power’ and each year we hope to encourage women and girls to become stronger individuals.

## **Fundraising event**

In August, our CEO Marie Hanson MBE did the very daring task of skydiving. Considering that she suffers anxiety, hates flying and is scared of heights, this was an extra special feat.

With the strapline of ‘Face the Fear’ she leapt from 10,000 feet over Cambridge Airfield for everyone we endeavour to help - for all the sufferers and survivors of abuse and trauma.

The day was a great success, thank you to **North London Skydiving Centre** for their wonderful support, training and carrying out of the activity. Thank you to **Eddie Nestor** and all at **BBC Radio London** for the coverage and thank you to Sabrina once again for joining Marie in the lovely interview. The skydive was an extra special moment.

## **Peace Concert**

This year saw a welcome return of our Peace Concert. Once again taking place at the **Clapham Grand** , we held the event in October halfterm as opposed to being in the summer. This still proved good for our young people as we had an arrray of great artists perform, including Risky, Jah Digga, Alesha Warren, Cherri V, Jodian Natty, Gersham Allen, J Clark, Brixton Dance School and DJvine.

It was once again hosted by the wonderful Chris Preddie OBE with a special talk from Faron Alex Paul, who gave a great presentation in combatting knife crime featuring his new product of knifeproof clothing. Along with the talks we had a moving segment showing the sad loss of the young lives lost during 2022 in London because of knife crime. This particular slide show showed the teenagers we lost, though all in all, there were over 30 people who were killed because of knife and gun crime in London in 2022. A special heartfelt thanks to **Patrick Boyce** for his moving testimony about the loss of his son dear **Jamel** , because of knife crime.

Our very special thanks goes to actor **Idris Elba** for the great interview he took part in - as one of our young ambassadors asked him questions about life, career and promoting peace. His talk for the young peole was very encouraging, and we also say thank you for his generous donation of his anti-violence brand **‘Don’t Stab Your Future’** t-shirts and hoodies, many thanks.

This concert is for all our youth everywhere, to let them know that there is a better way to live; a life that does not involve violence of any sort whether by knife, gun and even a physical

attack. It seeks to bring youth together in peace and provide intervention for those on the periphery of criminality or those already involved in crime by showing them the avenues of positive living through talks, testimonials, interactive activities, and music. A big thank you to **Niall Paterson** and evryone at **SKY TV** for the great interview and promotion of the Concert where Marie was also joined by one of our Ambassadors **Chukwudi Iwuji** ; _our kindest thanks to Chuk as well for joining Marie all the way from New York, USA by video link_

## **National Listening Day**

Listening Day was a great success this year, only being our 2[nd] Listening event, our young people had a good time at our Main Offices as the day coincided with our Friday Youth Club.

The aim of national listening day is to not only shine a spotlight on how much our young people need to have their voices heard, but also to raise awareness regarding the overall delicate issue of mental health with young people.

This day is for encouraging our young people to speak about their wellbeing while letting them know that we as adults are here to listen, a day to encourage young people how to ask for support as well as obtain vital information about therapy and general restorative avenues for healing. We once again partnered with **Georgia’s Voice** - the charity in Cornwall founded by Sophie Alway after one of her daughters tragically ended her life in July 2020. We have more plans for next years event, including interactive displays for our young people to express what they may be going through.

_Throughout the year we saw an array of warm invitations and very welcome honours:_

- STORM CEO Marie was a winner at the **Neurodiversity Awards 2022** from **Genius Within CIC**

- We were honoured guests of **Kemi Badenoch MP** for a special talk on the **‘Inclusive Britain’** report at the **Royal Society of Arts** - a report that Marie herself had input with by contirbutions and feedback on key points for its compilation

- Marie and her Son **Elijah** were special guests at **Number 10 Downing Street** for Elijah’s talk on mental health and wellbeing - as he is one of our own young ambassadors

- We also attended the International Leadership Conference with the **Universal Peace Federation** (UPF) - of which Marie is also an **Ambassador of Peace** with, and she also did an interview for the promotion of peace, as well as joining in signing a document for peace in the **Korean Peninsula** ; the theme of the day

- Marie was also a finalist with the **London Impact Awards** in the ‘Standout Women’s Champion’ category. The Awards were supported by the **London Community Foundation** and **CtitBank**

- We were also guests of the **Wimbledon Foundation** as they thanked community groups and charities that they have supported over many years with a wonderful tea party evening at **The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club SW19** . Marie was also a special guest at Wimbledon for an afternoon of High Tea earlier in the year

- We partnered with the UPF for youth work, where several youths took part in gardening activities at STORM Main Office’s roof garden. Thank you to **Melissa** at the Community Gardens for her support - thanks also for the wonderful **Community BBQ** that took place in our roof garden during the summer, it was a pleasure for STORM to be cooking for the event, thank you to **London Square** for their kind donation too

- Our CEO was also given the honour of turning on the Christmas Lights at Clapham Junction, this was a wonderful evening of fun and entertainment - we give our thanks **Roz Williams** and all at the **Junction BID** for the invite to turn on the lights and for all their support for STORM Family Centre

- The UPF also held an evening in the **House of Lords at Parliament** with a range of moving talks from various guests talking about **Violence Against Women and Girls** and how to combat it; our thanks to **Margaret Ali** and **Robin Marsh** at the UPF and **Barroness Verma** for this most touching evening. Marie spoke about her own life story of how she and her family overcame suffering from domestic violence, and about petitioning Parliament for greater action in helping children who have suffered abuse, and how to protect our young ones from suffering abuse and harm

- And at the end of this year, Marie was one of many special guetsts at the **Black Conference** - a two day event with a further afterparty hosted by the **Black British Network** . Our thanks to its CEO **Cephas Williams** for the invitation to such a good event and for his great hospitality. We hope to work even more with Cephas and the BBN in the coming years, and Marie persoanally thanks STORM Ambassdor **Will Poulter** for the introduction to Mr. Williams of the BBN

## **Future plans:**

Our plans include

- We endeavour to still launch our ‘School of Excellence’ - our project to teach young people all aspects of the Film & Television industry

- Expanding our partnerships so we can work more in collaboration with local organisations, creating an even more successful wrap-around service

- Getting more people into sustainable Employment/Higher Education which will in turn lead to employment

- Upgrading our technology systems to create a better learning environment for our service users - as well as expanding our services through social media/technology
