Over the years we have given out l¢Mis worth £17.686 to 56 sponsored siudents with £509 havin8 been repaid. These

The Red Rubber Ball Foundation bEgan a cycling club ai The Raila Lducation Centre in the Kibera slums of Nairobi in
January 2017. with 15 bikes donated by Charity Bike Build. adding more bikes. plus clothing, t(M)ls. and equipment
later. Around 50 tK>ys and girls attended sessions. learniTh8 10 ride and take part in rides beyond the school 8Tounds.
The School Principal reporttd improved attendan¢e, with children who were previously often abseni. allendin8 sch(x)I
more regularly. The club w&s helpin8 children who are oihe)wise very susceptible to temptations of drugs, glue snitying.
alcohol. gang crime and violenc¢. and ¢ven proslibjtion.
Sadly. these bikes disappeared along Wlth the programme u)-Ordin￿or whilst there were restrictions on movem¢ni due
to COVID. Despite strenuous effort5 we have been unable io lo¢al¢ either the bikes or the programme w-ordinator,
tneaning th&¢ the cycling club in Kibera w&s closed.
Howev¢r, we have since been able to open two new ¢y¢ling ¢lubs ai Nam&s0li Sch￿1 in Kakamega county and at
Senator Bawk Obama Secondary School in Siaya County under a differeni hrTangem¢nt.
The Foundation provide5 bikes. a btke stand. toolbox. pumps, helmets. water bottles and cloihin& and arranges initial
training for the teachers and child￿￿.

Under the new 3-6-0-3 sysiem children will spend six years at Secondary school. three in Juni()r Secondary b¢foT¢
split with three years in Senior Secondary. At the same lime there is a shift away from exam based ¢esiing io an
&ssessmenl based evaluation.
Junior Secondary s¢h(x)15 are mostly day ￿h0O15 Wlth many Senior Secondary ￿h0O1$ offering knardin8 places. Our
experience b¢¢n that day s¢hool 8ive5 ehildren an inferior educA¢ion &s children spend less lim¢ in sch(M)l and often
have limited resourLes ai home. For girls. aiiendirh8 attend day school leaves them vulnerable io PTed810ry men and
youth5, FGM and ￿rIY marria8e. Boys are also &¢ daily risk from PTe5sure5 to entcr 7Tr￿ crime. &l¢ohol and glue.
In 2025 ihe Red Rubber B￿1 Foundation will ih¢r¢fore olTer new 5cholar5hbps for children from disadvantaged
background5 lo attend Jiinhor Secondary 5¢hv(?Is thai provide b()arding pla¢es. We r¢co8nise that some children will
not be¢n offered place5 as boardin8 pupi15 but still stmggle its poy d4y fees, so we will offer a limiled number of
scholarships for day school platt3.
