Tuesday afternuoii3, I pm to 2 pm, Aithur (oui. volunteer preaclier) leads a service for
clients and members of th¢ local community, wlio have been coming to the Cafe for a

the hour pi'ior to the meeling, and are given a meal foi. free.. aftei. Ihe meeting Eva one
of oui. volunteei's and our chaplain provide lea, biscuits at)d Chat. Soine come only for

Thursday morning I l ani to 12 pm we have a Bible discussion which is attended by
vaiious clÉents, and sometimes others. after which we share a meal togethei..
Thursday afternoon we gather logethei. in a Creative Activity Group. We have done
ai'twoi'k, ci'aftwoi'k, physical exei'cises, dranvd & voice workshops, mindfulness ￿ld
board games.
Oil Wednesday afternoons we support the Methodist Church Befrienders group to provide
chat along with advice and guidance. We value this partnership as it allows us to work with
the wider eommunity as these sessions are attended by anyone in the community and is
mainly allended by local honieless people and those who al'e socially isolated or sts'uggling
financially and need somewhei'e to come where they can keep warm and receive a hot drink
and snacks.
As a inemb¢r of the Cl)aplaincy Tearn in HMP Maiichestei., or chaplain is in that prison
for 3hrs on Fi'iday afternoons and 2hrs on Sunday moi'nings
on Sunday morning she is

of the iving% to those who hav¢ connected with the Chaplaincy Teain, and others.. (p￿'tiCi11aI'IY
those who are due foi. IElease in the Gi'eater Manchester ai'ea).
Iii Api'il we joined the newly-fom]ed monthly 'Discliarge Hub, in HMP Manchester. which
focuses on suppoiling those due to be iEleased Éiito the community. We offer advice and
suppoit and ai'range foi. prisonei's to be welcomed into oui. hub when they have been i'eleased,
at the last session we had convei'sations wlth 2 guys who at-e due for release soon into this
area - l of thcm a Muslim -who would like to join a inulti-faith gi'oup which we are, as we
welcome all faiths and none.
Latei. that iiionth there was an eveiit concerning 'Homelessness among Released Prisoners,
wliieh held here at Centi'al Hall. this was a great chance to make iietwoi'k connections
and woik in partnership with other local oi'ganisations and also to show pai'tnei's oui- cafe and
centr¢. It was boih sad and uplifting to be part of this event- upliftÈng, to see just how many
agencies thei'e are at work in the Greater Maiichester area, and beyoiid, striving to help those
who find Ihcmselves actually i'eleased fi'om prison with nowhei'e to sleep. but deeply
sadd¢ning to realise that we are all Chai'ities or oiEanisations funded by Grants which al-e
vari&ble and sometimes unreliable. It is Volunleei's and Ex-offendei's themselves who have
the deep heart to help people make the 1st steps to a fl'esh stait. Through attending this
conference our chaplain was able to extend our contacts with other Agencies, including an
excellent workei. based at HMP Styal.
We now have reconnected with the pi'ison conlact within the Cliaplaincy team at nearby HMP
Foi'est Bank, w,ho will be receiving CYMCC literature and arrangiiig legal visits thei'e foi. lis,

GREATER MANCHESTER COMMUNITY CHAPLAINCY LIMITED
There is no timeline-end to the help and support which we gtve, because the process of
becoming i'ehabililated in soclety is a nev¢r-ending process.. especially in these days, when
even those wlio have not been imprisoned, are strugglkng to make a life for themselves. Lack
of resourcesl mental health condilions/i'elalionshkp piDblems etc are niultlplied even more so
when you are trying to get back on the i'ails, often against the pr¢judic¢ of people who have
ali'eady marked you down.
We have ￿centlY had 2 people, who wei'e on a good solid pathway. retuiMii)g lo us foi. help
when, t1￿Ollgh no fault of their own, the rug was pulled from beneath tlieii. feet.
We also discovered that 2 men who had irgulai'ly been con)ing into the eafé to buy
themselve8 frJ(Jd and drink, weiE, iii fact, Men witli a prison backgi'ound. This came to light as
friendly Telalionship developed between them and oui- volunteeiE, enabling them to
eventually open up about their experiences. They are now registered clients with us and
staiting to attend some of the activities.
The way that the prison s¢i'vi¢¢ is working now means that people being irleased froni
Manchester prisoT]s are veiy ofteii going home to cities in olhei. pai'ts of the couiitry, and vice
versa. So that we have peopl¢ aii'iving in Manchester, (their hometown), who, actually, were
not released in Manchester. We are currently supporting people from Risley, Foi'est Bank,
Petei'borough and Guys Marsh.
2 new people were sepai?tely brought into the Cafe, (I lady & I man), by othei. people
concerned foi. their Welfare. It tui'ned out that both had beeii released from different pi'isons,
in different paits of the country, and had been giv¢n just a ts'avel warrant, which had brought
them to Manchester ￿]d as they were se￿.c1]Ing for a place of safety and welcoming, this is
one of the gi'eat benefits of our location and paitneiBbip with the Methodist chui'ch.
The work in HMP Manchester over the past 20 years means that oui. chaplain is often
recognised by Men who have been held Iliei'e. This has happened more than once, which
immediately opens a dooi. for fi'iendly communication.
More about oui. gi'oups
The groups continue Tuesday and Thursdays.. and at the nioment the Thursday
afternoon Session is used to address issues such as social skills, managing mental illness,
rclating to othei's, etc. wlii15t usiiig T,egn & Board CIaines as a 'backgi'ound disti'action,.
Tlie good i'elalionships wl)ich we have with our Clients are often due to the Cafe beiiig tlie
only place that they con come and find people wlio will treat tlieni as equals. suppoi't them
and show them compassion; being able to accept, allow foi., and take into account tlie fact
that they are having vai'ious diifi¢ulti¢s of mental health, neui'odivei'sity, aiid the stigma of
pi'isoii holdiiig them back.
New clients a￿1ve Tegulai-ly, and w¢ give pi'actical help in the form of bus passes, meals,
clothing and ieferrals for essential support, but the most impoitant thiiig that we offei. 15 our
acceptance, fi'ieiidship, and good humour: most noticeable when obsei'ving oui. Thursday
fternoons being totally enjoyed by the men and women who participate. One of tlie
pai'ticipants COl151antly aiinouiices how his mental health is benefiting from what we are
doing.
The artwoi'k, Lego buildiiiE, poetry writing, inspii'ational posters & baking ciilminated in a
two-day display of some of the work which has been produced in the Café, at tlie eiid of
Octobei. giving many OPPOTtunities for the geneial public who use the cafe to appreciate the

achievements and be encouraged of the benefits of suppoi'ting the work we do.
A word from the Chaplain
"It is my personal delight in thi5 job to be welcoming people into the Cafe whom I have
pi'eviously met within the walls of prison: and am regularly meeting men on the Wings to
pi'epare them foi life on the out, Sadly, the one thing which we are powerless to give them is
somewhere to live as soon as they are released.
Last month Eva & I attended the Comrnunity Chaplaincy Association's National Conference
in London and were both ¢ncouraged and inspired by meeting othei. Groups from all over the
Country .... all of us with the same vision & purpose, yet all funetioning so differently.
As well as the Women's group (and regular groupslactivities), my next plan is to hold a
similar one for men supervised by myself but led by one of our volunteers who is a former
client evel'y Wednesday (with lived experience of prisoii, hoinelessness, mental health and
511bstance addictions), who will initiate conversations conceming 'getting on with this new
chance at LIFE,
coping with 'life on the out,
time management
personal hygiene
meaning, ful pastimes etc. We will build up this gi'oup by regulai. feedback and input from
those attendingT as to what they would like future sessions to include.,
Kath Holmes (Client Suppoi't Woi'keilchaplain)
The (lifferenees we are making (hoth hig and small)
We continue lo pi'ovide essential items on a regular basis to oui. clients including food
vouchei'5, ti'avel passes and items of clothing and toiletries. This is rnade possible through
oiii. pai'tnership with In-Kind Direct. We can buy these items in bulk at greatly reduced prices
as thc itenis ai'¢ donated by large companies.
We continue to hold i'egular forums with oui- clients and volunteers to ensure that they are
happy iii theii. roles and allow them to suggest changes and involve them in any new group5
and activities. With clients these foi'ums allow them to inform us of how well the groups are
going, the services we provide and what they would like us to do or change going foi'wai'd.
They also provide the opportunity for them to share their experiences with new clients and
support them in making changes in theii. lives to stay away fi'om re-offending.
Our 'Navigating Trauma Course, has been well attended and continues to help clients Wlth
theii. mental health issues by talking with othei. people with similar expei'iences and havingJ a
Chaplaiii to discuss issues i-aised aftei. the group. We have i'efei'i'ed mole people to specialist
mental health suppoi't seiviceslcoiin5elling. Following on fi'om this group we have found that
maiiy go on to attending our activitie.s on a re&Julai' basis.

GREATER MANCHESTER COMMUNITY CHAPLAINCY LIMITED
As you can see from the testimonies below, people accessing 0￿. seivice and attending
'oups and activities tell us that they help with their general wellbeing. mental liealth as well
as providing a i'eason to gel up and out each day they attend. There are also the added
benefits of free mea15 aiid drink and a nic¢ warm pla¢e wilh positive socialising. It also helps
those sti'uggling financially as they can save on the cost of food and heating while they are
attending the centi'e.
Ov¢r th¢ yeai we have been successful in applying for over £3000 in small grants for those
who coine to us for suppoi't. These grants Iwve heKped those in need of ¢ss¢ntial items of
clothes, bedding and furniture as well as medical equipment to improve their wellheing and
liviiig conditions whieh helps them maintaiii aLconimodation and live mol'e comforiably.
Clients Supported
The table below shows the number of registei'ed clients (ex~offeiiders) seen over the last year
compared lo the previous yeai.. Although we only have a slight increase in overall numbei's,
we are se¢ing inore people on a i'egulai. basis, which has I'esulted in a big inci'ea5e in ovei-all
engagements over the year as people ￿'e attending foi. 2-3 days a week for suppoi't and to
attend groupslactivities,
We continue to support the Befrienders dix)p-in sessions on Monday and Wednesday
aftei'noons. Many of these people visit on a regular basis and over the year we have helped
ovei. 200 individuals mostly providing someone to chat to about issues they face but also with
food and clothing. These sessions al'e a lifeline to lonely, isolated people and piDvide healtliy
socialising Èn a safe environment as well as a break from the streets for the City's homeless
people.

Plans for the year ahead
Client Su
ort
As mentioned above we are slarting new groups in the new yeai. for the male clients. This
wtll be peer led and supei'vised by the Client Support Worker. The gi'oup will a150 be
attended by a volunteer pastoi. who has recently signed up with us.
We recently had a regular client offer his services to the ch￿-Ity by providing free haircuts
and shaving for oui. clients and those who attend the Methodist Chureh Befriendei. sessions.
This will be a much-needed service to most of our clients who are struggling financially and
have to go without Ihese luxlliies. A massive boost to the homeless men and women who
attend each week as some of Ihem will or cannot attend homeless charities for a variety of
reasons.
We have recently developed a new partnership with the Salvation Army Housing Chaplain
who we go to know as we support several men who are residing in theii. propei'ties. There al'e
currently three in Manchestei., and we will be able to provide additional support to the people
who are staying at the hostel by r¢feiTal from the Chaplain but also we will be able to refer
newly reLeased Clients to them so they can assess whether they can offer them a place to stay.
We will continue our successful Navigating Trauma Course and oui. Chaplain will be
undertaking more training early in the new year.
Our client support workei. and one of oui. long Service volunteers recently attended the
National Conference of the Community Chaplaincy Association and met a lot of people fi'om
other community chaplaincies. We al'e hoping to expand on these lirLks in the new year to
shal'e ideas and work closer together to better benefit those we help.
Fundraisin
As this is our last yeai. of funding frorn the Lottery Community Fund we will be
oon¢entrating a lot of our efforts into funding for futui'e years foi. col'e costs. Thi5 will be
done by the Manager and Volunteer cooi'dinator with input from the Chaplain, clients and
volunteers.
We also attend to plan more fundi'aising events in the community lo raise our profile and
reach out to mol'e faith otEJanisations, who are our main suppoiters due to the woi'k we do
with ex-offenders.
Our volunteers and clieiit support worker will a150 be visiting local oi'gani5ation to inform

GREATER MANCHESTER COMMUNITY CHAPLAINCY LIMITED
them of the positive work we do and the changes helping people who have been in prison
makes, not only lo the wider community but to businesse5 as well. We still have oui
pailnership with Morrisons Community Charnpions who support our events by pi'oviding
food and refreshments.
Communi
Activities
Our regulai. evenls Continue to run and are well attended by all in oui. conimunity. Each year
we hold the following fire events open to all
Coffee and cake (Easter, Summer and Christmas) and Christmas Meals.
We are looking to hold more of these events in 2025 and al'e consulting with clients,
volunteei's and the community to see what they leel would be bEn¢ficial lo them.
The Chi'istmas lunches have been running for many years, and we have had feedback fi'om
our attendees saying that this is the only Clu-islrnas dinner they will have and that it is great to
be welcomed and feel like part of the community. This helps people greatly reduce tlieir
feelings of loneliness and isolation at Christmas which leads to improved mental wellbeing
and sense of belonging.
We are also looking at a clientsl volunteer drama production, as we ali'eady have stsff and
voluntccrs with expei'ience in Ihis area and it would be great to show these skllls to our
coniinunity.
