The trustees, who are also directors for the purposes of company law, have pleasure in presenting their report and the unaudited financial statements of the charity for the year ended 30 September 2023.

The trustees who served the charity during the period were as follows:

Structure, governance, and management
Barakah Educational and Cultural Association is a charitable organisation and a company limited by guarantee, was formed in the United Kingdom in 2010.
Our mission is to provide education and relief of poverty cater for the pressing needs of the disadvantaged, socially isolated and disaffected young people irrespective of their background in the UK and Africa.
Through culturally appropriate mechanisms we will focus on areas of Education
Crime prevention, education, training, information exchange and integration into the British society.
Most of our services are culture sensitive and the information will be relayed in English as well as in Community languages

Structure
The charity is managed by a board of directors (Trustees) and nominated representatives within the community who support the work of the charity in a variety of roles. The committee is authorised to coopt persons having special knowledge or experience to serve the interest of the charity and its beneficiaries.
There are no specific restrictions imposed by the trustees concerning the way the charity can operate, in as much as it does not contradict the Articles of Association.

Objectives and activities
The Organisation’s objectives continue to advance, in London, the education of children and Youth empowerment, promoting social welfare, cultural activities and provision of spiritual guidance.
Key activities and achievements within this period include:

Engaging with the wider community more effectively and reaching out to other community groups and organisations such as Peckham Citizens, Southwark Muslim Forum, and the Southwark interfaith.

Providing space and facilities for members of the community for meetings, weddings, funeral services naming ceremonies and cultural celebrations

Organising and providing iftar for the community, throughout the period of Ramadan, thereby encouraging unity, fostering love, and helping brothers and sisters preserve their culture and identity.

Organising Eid festivals and celebrations for families and children successfully with a record number of attendees who gave excellent feedback.

To provide religious facilities for followers of the Islamic faith, and to offer education, cultural and recreational services to the whole community.
To promote social inclusion for the benefit of the public by working with members of the Association who are socially excluded to relieve the needs of such members of the Association and assist them to integrate into society by:
a) Providing a local network group that encourages and enables members to participate more effectively with the wider community.
b) Increasing or coordinating opportunities for members of the Association to engage with service providers to enable those providers to better meet the needs of members.
To provide short-term relief aid and support to victims of poverty focusing mainly on the most vulnerable including children and young people, women, people with disabilities and destitute.
To provide education and vocational skills training programmes for the under privileged, less fortunate and those who are most vulnerable in the communities we serve.

Financial review
The committee was satisfied with the level of members’ donations and funds from fundraising activities, received during the year. The statement of financial activities shows a surplus of £54,710 for the year and the reserves show surplus of £875,160 We need substantial financial support and are confident that the grants and donations in the coming year will be sufficient to permit the charity to carry out its present projects to completion.

Plans for future periods
Our plans include the following.
To set up a youth club that provides extracurricular activities at evening, weekends and during the summer holidays.
Working with local and National Health organisations to promote healthy living and to help raise awareness on various medical issues affecting the African community in Britain for examples diabetes.
To sponsor at least 100 orphans in Africa to support their education and welfare.
To acquire a place of worship
Reserve policy
It is the policy of the charity that unrestricted funds which have not been designated for a specific use should be maintained at a level equivalent to between three- and six-month’s expenditure. The committee considers that reserves at this level will ensure that in the event of a significant drop in funding, they will be able to continue the scheme's current activities while considerations is given to ways in which additional funds may be raised. This level of reserves has been maintained throughout the period.
Responsibilities of the trustees
The trustees are responsible for preparing the Trustees Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and regulations.
Company law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year. Under that law the trustees have elected to prepare the financial statements in accordance with United Kingdom

Generally Accepted Accounting Practice (United Kingdom Accounting Standards and applicable law). The financial statements are required by law to give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity and of the surplus or deficit of the charity for that period.
In preparing these financial statements, the trustees are required to:

Select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently.

Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent.
Prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that
The charity will continue in operation.
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable
accuracy at any time the financial position of the charity and which enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with Companies Act 2006. The trustees are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

In accordance with our terms of engagement, and to assist you to fulfil your duties under the Companies Act 2006, we have compiled the financial statements of the charity which comprise the Statement of Financial Activities, the Balance Sheet and the related notes from the accounting records and information and explanations you have given to us.
This report is made to the charity's Board of Directors, as a body, in accordance with the terms of our engagement. Our work has been undertaken so that we might compile the financial statements that we have been engaged to compile, report to the charity's Board of Directors that we have done so, and state those matters that we have agreed to state to them in this report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the charity and the charity's Board of Directors, as a body, for our work or for this report.
We have carried out this engagement in accordance with technical guidance issued by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants in England and Wales and have complied with the ethical guidance laid down by the Institute relating to members undertaking the compilation of financial statements.
You have acknowledged on the balance sheet as at 30 September 2023 your duty to ensure that the charity has kept proper accounting records and to prepare financial statements that give a true and fair view under the Companies Act 2006. You consider that the charity is exempt from the statutory requirement for an audit for the year.
We have not been instructed to carry out an audit of the financial statements. For this reason, we have not verified the accuracy or completeness of the accounting records or information and explanations you have given to us and we do not, therefore, express any opinion on the financial statements.

The trustees are satisfied that the charity is entitled to exemption from the provisions of the Companies Act 2006 (the Act) relating to the audit of the financial statements for the year by virtue of section 477(2), and that no member or members have requested an audit pursuant to section 476(1) of the Act. The trustees acknowledge their responsibilities for:

(i) Ensuring that the charity keeps proper accounting records which comply with section 386 of the Act,
-
(ii) preparing financial statements which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charity as at the end of the financial year and of its profit or loss for the financial year in accordance with the requirements of section 393, and which otherwise comply with the requirements of the Act relating to financial statements, so far as applicable to the charity.

1. Accounting policies
Basis of accounting
The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, except for investments which are included at market value, and in accordance with applicable United Kingdom accounting standards, the Statement of Recommended Practice "Accounting and Reporting by Charities" issued in March 2005 (SORP 2005) and the Companies Act 2006.
Cash flow statement
The trustees have taken advantage of the exemption in Financial Reporting Standard No 1 (revised) from including a cash flow statement in the financial statements on the grounds that the charity is small.
Fixed assets
All fixed assets are initially recorded at cost.
Depreciation
Depreciation is calculated to write off the cost of an asset, less its estimated residual value, over the useful economic life of that asset as follows:
