TOLL GAVEL UNITED CHURCH TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT 2023 Alm and Purpose The Trustees of Toll Gavel United Church are responsoble for the whole mission of the church, pastoral, spiritual, evangelical and ecumenical. They are responsible for the maintenance of the church premises. Objertlves and Actlvltles The church's purpose Is to advance the Christlan faith in Beverley and the local area in accordance with the princlples and practices of the Methodist and United Refom)ed Churches. To achieve this, the church has engaged In a range of actNities, either on its own or with others, includin8: -The celebration of public worship -The teaching of the Christian faith -mission and Evangelism -Pastoral work including visiting, the sick, bereaved. housebound and those in residential or nursing care -Provislon of faclllties wlth a Christian ethos for the local community, indudlng the elderly and the young -The support of other charities working in the UK and oversea To facilitste much of this work it is vital to maintain the frdbrlc of the building. This is becomin8 an increasingly difficult challenge because the premises are old, there Is a redurtion in self- help and the pressure on available finance. Achlevements and perfornmnce Rev Fran Rhys has completed her second year as our ministèr. We have continued to provide Sunday morning worship usin8 a ran8e of ministers and local preachers. Average attendance Is between 50 and 60. We also provide monthly afternoon and evening services on a Sunday with a more informal atmosphere. These have increased in popularity and attrart people on the fringe of the church community. We livestream the morning Se￿iCe and this Is watched by an average of 20 viewers. Thls allows people who are unwell or cannot attend the service to watch ft Ilve or at a time which is more convenient for them. l i In September 2022 we participated in the National Heritsge celebrations. This year we displayed a series of Bible stories from the Old and New Testsments made from a variety of art forms. This event has become an estsblished feature on our calendar. We provide a Lunch Club once a fortnight on a Tuesday which is flourishing. A hot meal is provided for 40 people plus the stsff. Another 8roup operate a Community Lunch aub every Wednesday. The homeless, the lonety and the destitute are encouraged to use this facility. Our coffee facility at the front of the church continues to operate 3 momings a week. We are mana8in8 to sustain our regular Saturday Coffee Momin8 in the hall, but the

church volunteers are having to organlse and run the event much more often than the pre- pandemic era. Other bookings from groups wanting to use the premises on a regular basls has gradually increased but our income from them has still only reached about two thirds of the amount pre-pandemk. Our Income has been boosted by several large donations and legacles. These have helped to keep finances reasonably stsble. The Falth, Space and Place group has contlnued Its work. They are exploring Options for redevelopln8 our premlses to make them more energy efficient and less expensive to operate. We secured some funding from the local council to employ a firni of architects to draw up plans to accommodate as many of our activlties and booking into a slngle sulte of premises rather than two. By the end of 2023 they will provide us with a 3D computer generated model which can be shown to church members and user groups. This will allow us to proceed with a survey of all user groups to see if the archltecvs ideas fit their requirements. We are onty spending money on essential malntenance and any emergency repalrs. The work to repair flood damage which happened In Ortober 2021 was completed in December 2022 The Spirituality and Mission group have continued to meet regularly and explore and arrange Ideas for worshlp and outreach. During this year we have lost six members through death and a few more through the Methodlst Church's decision to allow same sex marriages. Our current membershlp stands at 138. We continue to publish a monthly bulletin which is sent out by e mail or by hand. This contains Information and datss of planned events. Over a period of 10 years the Beverley Methodist clrcuit has been exploring amalgamating wlth another circuit in the district. There have been many similar mergers across the county as the Methodist church shrinks and the suppty of mlnisters has reduced. Our most recent relationshlp has developed over a period of two years with the Hull Central and West clrcults, and we have shared a Joint superintendent minister during this perlod. Unfortunately during this year, she has retired through111 health and this combined with no circuit treasurer and no new clrcult stewards appointed meant the idea had to be abandoned. However, a new idea emerged as other circuits in our district had simllar issues. The Chair of our Methodist District suggested we joined a new arrangement due to stsrt on September 12023, called the Bridge Circuit. An Operations, Manager had already been appolnted and 3 other circuits were signed up to this new arrangement. The purpose behind this idea is to allow some of the admlnlstration of the churches to be tsken care of and thereby releasing members to engage more with rnission work. Due to a shortage of volunteers for irnportant roles in the circuit we have taken thls new Idea on board and look forward to seeln8 how this works out In practice.

Pastoral wo The church members are divided into 15 pastoral groups each with a leader called a Pastoral Visitor. Their role is to keep in contact with their group, pass on inforniat6on and deliver flowers to those who experience illness or bereavement. They do an excellent job. Christine Milbum is employed as a lay worker among the elderly, and helps to run the church Lunch Club, as well as Leisure Day which meets to support older people with a weekty programme of events. We employ someone to run the Messy Monday group and also a Children and Families, worker. These are both part time posts. The Messy Monday group is well supported, and the 2 workers combine to organise special events and holiday clubs. We continue with several uniformed groups with very committed leaders. Mlsslon We participated in Christian Ald Week and dlstributed envelopes for donations and with another event we or8anised we raised £941. We also responded to the Turkish Earthquake Appeal and raised £IO(K). We organised a Coffee Morning to raise funds for Beech Holme Tandem Club which has a fleet of tsndems to 8lve blind and partially sighted people the opportunlty of cycle rides. They run a regular programme of rides throughout the year. We organise a service and distribute envelopes to raise funds for the World Mission Fund. We continue to support the Open Doors project In Hull which offers support and help for refugees and asylum seekers We helped to organise worship times in local residential homes. We sent a box full of copies of Hymns and Psalms, a hymnbook we no lon8er use on a regular basls, to Sierra Leone. The church also voted In November to allow same sex marriages on its premises. The church is open durlng BeverleVs annual Christmas Festlval, providin8 refreshments and entertainmenL Admlnlstratfve Inforniatlon Toll Gavel United Church is registered wlth the Charity Commission (number 1140314) as a local ecumenical partnership, and is situated on Toll Gavel. Beverley, East Yorkshire. HU17 9AA Participatin8 denominations are a) the Meth¢)dist Church and b) the United Refornied Church. They are accountsble to the Yorkshire North and East District of the Methodist Church and the Yorkshire Synod of the Unlted Reformed Church.
