Annual Report of: Kenilworth Methodist Church, September 2024 -August 2025 Charity Registration Number 1140252

Kenilworth Methodist Church Council has oversight of the activities of Kenilworth Methodist Church working with the Minister. The Church Council delegates some responsibilities to the Leadership Team (see below) and to the following committees: Resources, Pastoral, Church Life, Eco. The church aims to enable its members to live out their calling as a Methodist People, to develop their discipleship, to worship, to serve and care for others and to draw others to faith through evangelism.

As Christians we promote the principles of service and support at local, national, and international levels. We promote global stewardship, in the form of supporting conservation and sustainability, together with active avoidance of exploitation and wastefulness. The Methodist Church is committed to diversity and non-discrimination in all its activities within and outside the church.

The year running from September 2024 to August 2025 was very encouraging. We had 107 members (including 4 new members) and our average attendance at the 10am service was 70. We had a number of children attending Junior Church every Sunday morning and also made a space available for toddlers or children who preferred to stay with their parents in church. We continued holding a regular morning service and also an informal monthly evening service, which we named Spirit and Sacrament. This attracted people not only from our Methodist church but also from other Methodist churches in the area and from the wider community in Kenilworth, some of whom had not attended any church in recent years.

We have focused this year on inclusion and especially on accessibility. This has led to the creation of Role Descriptors for the many different jobs that volunteers undertake to keep our church life functioning well and to make sure that all are safe. These are now available on our website and will help us to have conversations with each other about the volunteering we do within our church community.

The Leadership Team, and all our local preachers, have undergone mandatory Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Training, plus Unconscious Bias Training, and we are committed to doing all we can to ensure that everyone is treated with respect and without discrimination.

A full review of our church premises with regard to accessibility was completed. We received an excellent summary of the findings, including many helpful suggestions about ways of addressing various issues: lighting, the hearing loop, visual displays, space for wheelchairs to move freely etc. We tackled most of these issues in the course of the year but it is still a work in progress.

The Leadership Team decided that the refurbishment of the sanctuary was a priority, both because of concerns about the health and safety of those who were regularly moving heavy chairs and because we wanted to make the sanctuary more accessible to all. We researched suitable lightweight chairs and trolleys, and several members of the team went to the Christian Resources exhibition in October 2024 to try out chairs and meet some of the companies that supply them. An order was placed at the beginning of January 2025, the chairs were delivered within a few weeks, and we were delighted with the look, the convenience and the weight of the new chairs, and the ease with which we can move them on the trolleys. Fundraising, well supported by the congregation, helped us to raise the funds to pay for them.

The monthly pastoral coffee morning was renamed TLC (Tea, Laughter, Cake) and continued to be well attended, the short time of worship being much appreciated, especially by those who were rarely able to attend Sunday services.

One wonderful initiative was the creation of a KMC Prayer Diary, which was distributed last autumn. A great deal of effort went into collecting prayers, poems and photos, with contributions from many of the church community. It became a precious resource, giving us the privilege of remembering members of our church family in prayer each day of the week. We also started a WhatsApp prayer group where urgent prayer requests can be circulated and a considerable number committed themselves to that, as well as to a monthly prayer meeting.

Toddlers continued to thrive this year, with 250 children on the register and about 45 families attending fairly regularly. Families were given information about special child-friendly services at Christmas and other times throughout the year, and leaflets about baptism were made available for any who were interested. The team of volunteers worked tirelessly to show love and care to those attending this group.

During Advent 2024 we again supported the work of Carriers of Hope, the charity helping refugee families in Coventry. At their suggestion we collected toiletries, nappies etc throughout Advent and were able to pass on a van full of donations in early January.

The Grounds for Hope were well used during the year, as a place to pick some fresh vegetables or herbs, to stop for a chat and to host occasional times of prayer, especially during Advent and Lent. This area is a place to meet local people and make positive contacts, and is also an important part of our vision of being an Eco Church. A small group has been looking carefully at what is required to achieve our Silver award.

A number of maintenance projects were carried out during the year, including a revamping of the lighting system, both inside and out, to ensure adequate lighting in the carpark among other things. A nappy changing table was requested for the men’s toilets and that was duly installed.

Several uniformed organisations continued to use our premises midweek, without charge, and some church members were among the leaders of the groups and were keen to encourage more links with the church. For example, the Scouts and Rangers helped members of the church to provide refreshments during the annual Carnival procession in June.

Many of our members are actively involved in the various community groups which exist in Kenilworth. Some rented rooms regularly for their activities: u3a open meetings, gatherings for those who were visually impaired, painting and sewing groups, choir practices and several indoor sports activities to name but a few. We regularly publicised our special services (Christmas and Easter) and other events that we hosted, such as charity collections, coffee mornings, eco fairs to all who came through our doors.

The NHS used the sanctuary area regularly during the year for Covid boosters and flu vaccinations. They requested a storage room for their fridges and supplies, which we were happy to provide. They were very grateful for the help of church members in setting up and clearing their equipment at the beginning and end of each session.

The Church Council met four times. (October, November, February and June). Our reserves policy was approved at the meeting in March 2025 and there were no debts outstanding.

The General Church Meeting was on 22 June 2025. Sandra Quarterman, David Williams and Catherine Pennington were re-elected as Leadership Stewards and two new trustees were appointed.

Our annual income for the year to 31 August 2025 totalled £129,229. After payments of £115,904 there was a net surplus of £13,325.

We continue to be challenged and aim to be a welcoming growing church, accessible to all. We look forward to discovering where our Lord will lead us in the future.
