Annual Report of Kenilworth Methodist Church Priory Road, Kenilworth, Warwickshire CV8 1LQ Charity Registration Number 1140252

*Annual Report of

Kenilworth Methodist Church September 2022-August 2023 Charity Registration Number 1140252

Kenilworth Methodist Church Council has oversight of the activities of Kenilworth Methodist Church working with the Minister. The church aims to enable its members to live out their calling as a Methodist People, to develop their discipleship, to worship, to serve and to care for others and to draw others to faith through evangelism.

As Christians we promote the principles of service and support at local, national, and international scale. We promote global stewardship, in the form of supporting conservation and sustainability, together with active avoidance of exploitation and wastefulness. The Methodist Church is committed to diversity and non-discrimination in all its activities within and outside the church.

The year running from September 2022 to August 2023 saw steady recovery and reestablishment of or community after the hiatus caused by the period of closure during the Covid pandemic.

We took strategic and practical decisions about where to focus our limited resources. The break provided by Covid provided us with space to rethink and to prioritise the discipleship, pastoral and mission activities of our church. We took bold decisions not to restart some activities where resources were tight and did not replace employees as they departed during the previous year leaving ourselves in a better financial position to focus on our priorities.

Considering what mattered most to us helped us to decide how to restructure our committees within the church, giving greater prominence to Discipleship, Mission, and Pastoral matters and enabling a Resources Committee to support the work of the whole church. Putting this new structure in place has helped us to prioritise what to do and the order to it do it in.

We ran a number of discipleship and fellowship courses in church enabling people to get back together to rekindle fellowship and to talk about their faith. This led gradually to eight people becoming members of the Methodist Church in the early summer of 2023.

We also found encouraging and unexpected benefits in having volunteer leadership of some areas. Our longstanding Toddler group is a prime example. In the autumn of 2022, it was so popular we were regularly turning away families because of capacity issues in the hall where they met. When the Methodist Church nationally encouraged us to adopt an advent theme

entitled “There is Room” our enthusiastic volunteers took this to heart and decided we had to update the way we organised the group. We no longer turn anyone away. Our capacity has more than doubled. We have three times as many volunteers and we use the church sanctuary as well as the hall. Some weeks there can be seventy families in attendance.

Our Junior Church continued to thrive with a few more children coming along. This is an enormous success. The team of leaders and their helpers have adapted to suit the young people attending. It is lovely for this small group of children to get to know more of us and to realise we can all share our faith with one another.

We also work with older children, including a full range of uniformed organisations, (Beavers and Rainbows, Cubs and Brownies, Scouts, Guides and Rangers), as well as other activity and sports groups. We estimate that there are in excess of two hundred children and young people who make use of our premises each week.

For many years, the University of the Third Age have used our premises, (U3A), and we host a wide range of their classes including arts, crafts, skills, hobbies, pastimes, and adult learning. We also host small groups who provide keep fit, Pilates, indoor games, and dancing classes among many other activities.

A Christian mental health counselling service has a well-used base at our church. We also began planning to host the town NHS vaccination clinics.

On Saturday 11th March, we hosted a Conference organised by the Birmingham district of the Methodist Church, “Replanting Church at the Margins”, which explored creating Church communities in places and spaces where there are none. The President and Vice-President of Conference attended along with a number of other inspiring speakers. We heard about the importance of involving people in supporting the delivery of activities from which they were benefitting. It was good to be able to welcome friends and newcomers to our space and to use it to its full potential.

Throughout the year the building has been used by many and varied groups again as activities across the town have re-established. We provide a key community facility in the heart of the town and enable a variety of organisations to host events from concerts to fairs promoting community engagement. Through the year we gave thought to how we could make the building more accessible and more eco-friendly. We want everyone to feel safe and at ease in our building. We also began the process of looking at options to install solar panels.

The Church Council has met three times.

The General Church Meeting was on 23 April 2023. Fi Pethick, Sandra Quarterman, and David Williams were re-elected as Leadership Stewards. We also elected six new congregational representatives as trustees.

Our annual income for the year for the year to 31 August 2023 totalled £114k. After payments of £85k there was a net surplus of £28k. It is anticipated that most of this surplus will be spent on property repairs.
