Annual Report of **Kenilworth Methodist Church** Priory Road, Kenilworth, Warwickshire CV8 1LQ **Charity Registration Number 1140252** ## Annual Report of **Kenilworth Methodist Church September 2020-August 2021 Charity Registration Number 1140252** Kenilworth Methodist Church Council has oversight of the activities of Kenilworth Methodist Church Working with the Minister, The church aims to enable its members to live out their calling as a Methodist People, to develop their discipleship, to worship, to serve and to care for others and to draw others to faith through evangelism. In September 2020 we welcomed the Revd Dr Iain Ballard, who is also the superintendent of the South Warwickshire Circuit of the Methodist Church to be our Minster. He arrived at a difficult time with the church building closed and opportunities for face to face meetings constrained by Covid regulations and safety concerns. Nevertheless, he quickly sought opportunities to meet people online, in safe spaces outside and as and when it became appropriate in person in church too. Rev Iain got to know the church, its people, its context and the community around it and with that understanding he began to set out how to work with church to develop its discipleship and mission here in Kenilworth. Looking back, his arrival when the church had paused many of its usual activities gave us all some space for reflection. For most of the period of this report the church building remained closed, as it had been since March 2020. Our activities continued in a reduced manner online, by telephone and by post. The online services provided by the South Warwickshire Circuit were particularly welcomed. At the end of August 2021, we had 115 church members. These members are organised into pastoral groups, and we keep in touch by phone. As with many organisations, the pandemic forced us to be creative and innovative. One of our developments was the creation of our Grounds for Hope garden in a patch of unused ground just outside the church door. This has proved to be a very fruitful space in many ways, as we are planting vegetables to share with our neighbours but more importantly it has become a space where we meet people to talk and to put our faith into action. Shortly after Easter we were able to resume services in the church and set up new groups for Picnic Church and Mums and Babies to come into church for social activities when opportunities to meet were very restricted. Understandably it took time for people to return to church post Covid, and by the end of the reporting year numbers attending weekly services in person remained fairly low and many activities continued on Zoom. 1 | P a g e Annual Report of **Kenilworth Methodist Church** Priory Road, Kenilworth, Warwickshire CV8 1LQ **Charity Registration Number 1140252** We also ran a food distribution project for several months focusing on local families in need. Our Church Council meetings, and most other church business meetings throughout this period have also been conducted on Zoom. This has proved an effective and safe mechanism. For some meetings, especially those involving people from a wide area it seems likely to continue post Covid. The Church held its General Church Meeting in two stages, first an open session on Zoom on the evening of 23 July and then a meeting in person, at which elections took place after the morning service on Sunday 25 July 2021. At this meeting it elected, Lisa Lavender and Fiona Pethick as new Leadership Stewards and re-Elected Andrew Bennett for a further year. The full list of trustees is in the annex to this report. Our annual income for the year to August 2021 was £95,500. This was more than £6,000 down on the previous year. Given that a significant part of our normal income comes from lettings and our lettings income fell by £10, 000 we were very fortunate that our individual giving held up during the period. Some of our costs were reduced during the building closure. We were able to claim some furlough monies for two of our employees, and of course we did not need to heat the closed building, but many of our costs are fixed. Consequently, we adjusted our charitable giving to other groups during the year. We normally open our building to many other charitable groups during the week. Charities are charged at a reduced rate for using our premises and we host a wide range of educational groups from the very young to the not so young U3a. This facility has been missed and by the end of the year enquires were building up. Amongst our first new bookings were the New Hope Counselling Service who came back into the building in April 2021. By the end of the year we were engaging with hirers ready to restart activities as soon as the Covid levels would permit. The other challenge we faced during the winter and spring of 2020-21 was the failure of an expensive boiler part, followed a few months later by an unrelated breakdown which meant that the whole boiler had to be replaced. Whilst there were few users in the building this was not much of a problem, but there was some damage caused by damp which needed to be put right. The new boiler was installed at the start of the new financial year, and so the cost does not appear in these accounts. The combination of all these factors has reduced our reserves from about 5.8 months’ expenditure at pre-Covid levels to about 5.2 months and is likely to show a much bigger reduction in 2021-22. 2 | P a g e Annual Report of **Kenilworth Methodist Church** Priory Road, Kenilworth, Warwickshire CV8 1LQ **Charity Registration Number 1140252** We ended the year hopeful that we could restart some selected activities reasonably quickly, whist recognising that we have lost some long serving and valued members to Covid and to other causes during the period of closure.
