Kenilworth Methodist Church is part of the Methodist Church of Great Britain. It is based in Kenilworth Warwickshire. It is set up to enable the people in Kenilworth to engage in the calling of the Methodist Church by responding to the gospel of God’s love in Christ and to live out their discipleship in worship and mission. It does this through:
• Worship
• Service
- Learning and Caring and
• Evangelism.
Some of the primary ways we approach these aspects of our programme are through conventional Church Services and meetings held in our buildings. The closure of our buildings to all members of the general public from March 2020 has required us to completely reorder our programmes, cancelling some activities completely and migrating others to an online, telephone or postal activity wherever possible. We have been greatly assisted in this by both the South Warwickshire Methodist Circuit and the Birmingham Methodist District. Each of these bodies has hosted online church services and provided material and technical assistance, and we are very grateful to them for the help and guidance they have provided.
The annual income of Kenilworth Methodist Church for the year to 31 Aug 2020, derived mainly from congregational giving and from letting out rooms, amounted to £101,739, and was used to meet our four aims as above. Our income for the year was dramatically affected by the closure of our buildings from mid March, which particularly affected our lettings income.
Our expenditure is usually broadly the same as our income, but as we expected a significant drop in our income, some property and other discretionary expenditure was delayed and some staff were furloughed. As a result, our expenditure was kept to £96,465.
Historically we have been able to support a number of International and National charities either directly or financially. These have included Christian Aid, Action for Children, Samaritan’s Purse, (Christmas shoebox appeal), the Malawi Association of Christian Support, the Jeel-al-Amal orphanage in the Holy Land, the Uyogo Friendship link, the Zimbabwe Victims Support Fund and Amnesty International.
Locally, KMC has supported Kenilworth Youth for Christ, Thrive Christian Mission, The Spring Playgroup, the Waverley Day Centre, Warwick and District Foodbank, Carriers of Hope, (supporting refugees in Coventry,) Guy’s Gift, (a children’s bereavement counselling service), and Helping Hands (who offer local social provision for adults with physical and mental disabilities and learning disorders
We have also made annual donations to the Methodist Church General Fund which supports UK and international aid work, to the Methodist Ministers’ Housing Society, to Methodist Homes for the Aged and to the Methodist Relief Fund, (All We Can).
Because of the prevailing circumstances we have not been able to support all of these charities this year, or extend the same level of support to others. It is our fervent hope that as the restrictions are lifted, and as our finances improve, we will be able to resume our previous levels of support and involvement.
Although the Church buildings could only be let for a part of the year, the users included a variety of outside bodies such as mother and toddler groups, a blind persons’ group and several exercise, craft, games and skills groups, many being provided by the University of the Third Age and other organisations. There was also extensive use by internal groups and our affiliated Uniformed Organisations as well as use by KMC and others to stage special events and concerts and to provide a weekly drop in café, all of which are open to the general public. We also accepted private lettings, for example, for children’s parties. Again, we look forward to reopening our door to these and new tenants when circumstances allow.
Our Safeguarding Group and Risk Assessment team have ensured that the highest standards of protection are in place for everyone who visits our premises, and we have continued to develop and maintain our GDPR policies. Also, our working parties have continued to oversee grounds maintenance, minor internal and external painting and repairs, plastering, plumbing, heating, electrical, insulation, decoration and safety issues.
KMC is an Eco Church, engaging with the local community, seeking to change habits, conserve energy, re-cycle and be involved with environmental campaigns. During the Covid-19 lockdown we felt challenged to develop a small part of our grounds into a garden area that could be used and enjoyed by the local community once the restrictions are lifted and they are able to do so. We wanted to focus on being able to celebrate our release from restrictions and also to mourn the losses and remember the hardships that had been endured. We decided to create a Garden For Hope, mainly filled with edible plants and fruit, that could be jointly developed and managed by the community at large and from which they could freely access the produce that had been grown. Even during lockdown this project has attracted a lot of interest and it is believed that it will become a significant amenity for the community going forward.
Our Assistant Minister, Chris Flood, working with our volunteer Pastoral Visitors team, is involved in providing pastoral and spiritual support to the Church congregation and also in outreach activities in the wider community. Notably, Chris is involved with bereavement counselling for all the families who use KMC for funerals, but the service is also openly available to the local community. During the past year, our ability to support our own members and the community in these ways has been severely curtailed, and has been conducted mainly online or by telephone. During the lockdown period we have been challenged to consider other, new initiatives and ways of reaching out into our local community and we hope that some of these will be developed in the coming year.
Equally, Michael Sharman, our Children and Families Missioner has been involved in the past in a wide range of activities along with the Junior Church staff and the leaders of several of our affiliated groups and organisations. These have included our open Friday Toddlers Group meetings, and a mother and baby friendly “Cafe Church” programme. All of these activities have either had to stop entirely or migrate to an online format, and new and inventive activities are being developed.
As we continue to engage in a wide range of activities, some overtly religious, others less so, we seek to make the underlying message of our faith relevant and accessible to all. We hope that through our witness and contribution within our community we have made a positive impact in the lives of all those who have come into contact with the members of our congregation.
