Trustee’s Report April 2022 / March 2023
Sporting Challenge is a charity that provides the opportunity for adults of 18 and over with learning difficulties the chance to participate in social activities linked to sport. The provision of these activities gives the members’ carers and families much needed respite with the knowledge that they are safe, understood and supported.
The trustees have decided to conduct this year’s AGM electronically.
Achievements and successes over the last year:
First of all, a thank you to the trustees and officers of Sporting Challenge for the time and support that they set aside which without the charity would not be able to support the members.
Also, we must not forget the members and their families and carers that support the charity.
By April 2022 Sporting Challenge was endeavouring to reintroduce as normal an activity programme as possible with more members returning and during the summer period this including outdoor events such as Sailing and Walks.
In September 2022 we were able to take members away for a weekend break at the Calvert Trust in the Lake District which was greatly appreciated following the COVID lockdown for the previous two year making it not possible to take members away for a weekend.
Following the September weekend break the trustees invited members to look ahead to September 2023 and what their preferences would be for a weekend away with the majority favouring a city venue as a change.
As 2022 came to a close the members were able to attend a combined Christmas party and activity evening at the Wharf in Burscough where Tony & Sandy had for many years provided a venue for the Boccia, Kurling and Nintendo activity evenings. Sadly Tony & Sandy had made the decision to retire meaning that this would be the last time we would be able use their facilities.
January saw the charity start a new chapter so far as venues is concerned with after considerable enquiries and visits to possible locations The Stanley in Burscough hosting our Boccia, Kurling and Nintendo activity evenings which to date have been received very positively by members.
Grant bids prepared and submitted by the charity’s Activities Officer have been successful to the continued running of the charity as without these funds it would not be possible to support our members.
A review and updating of the charity’s policies is an ongoing process with the trustees having reviewed and signed of eight during the year ending March 2023.
Activities Support:
The charity buys in sessional support through EMSS who facilitate getting the members to and from the activities and provide support along with the venue staff at the activities. The trustees wish to thank the sessional support and venue staff for the work that they have undertaken this year.
COVID-19
Although the situation has improved over the last twelve month the trustees, members and their carers have to continue to be very mindful of the impact of COVID and should it become necessary the trustees will take appropriate actions to protect everyone should there be a deterioration.
A huge amount of time has been devoted to the points covered in this report and as chairman I would like to thank the trustees and officers of the charity for their support.
Financial Review :
2022 / 2023 Accounts, the trustees of the charity took the decision to continue to employ a firm of accountants to undertake an independent examination of the Receipts and Payments and the Statement of Assets and Liabilities of the charity. We are pleased to advise that the charity received a favourable report.
Approved by order of the Board of Trustees on the 26[th] September 2023 and signed on its
behalf by: Alasdair Watson …….
