## **THE PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL OF THE ECCLESIASTICAL PARISH OF ST PETER, BELSIZE PARK**

## **Report of the Parochial Church Council for the year ended 31 December 2024**

1. The Parochial Church Council of St Peter’s Belsize Park (“PCC”) submits its report and the financial statements of the PCC for the year ended 31 December 2024. St Peter’s Church is a parish church within the Camden Deanery of the London Diocese of the Church of England. It has the Dean and Chapter of Westminster Abbey as its patron.

2. The PCC is a corporate body established by the Church of England and registered with the Charity Commission as required by the Charities Act 2011. Its governing documents are the Parochial Church Councils (Powers) Measure 1956 as amended and the Church Representation Rules in the currently amended form.

3. Following the retirement of Revd Paul Nicholson as Priest-in-charge at the end of 2022, St Peter’s Church continued without a member of the clergy until 30 June 2024 when we were pleased to welcome Revd Alaric Dunsmore-Rouse as our Curate (reporting to the Vicar of Hampstead).

## **Governance**

4. The PCC met on five occasions during the year. The Annual Meeting and Annual Parochial Church Meeting were held on 12 May 2024. Kenneth Robbie and Mendi Wingfield offered to continue as Churchwardens and were duly re-elected. Alaric Dunsmore-Rouse was re-elected as Deanery Synod representative. All other members of the PCC were also re-elected.

5. The Revd Alaric Dunsmore-Rouse assumed the position of PCC Chair on his arrival as Curate. The positions of Lay Chair and PCC Secretary, Deputy Warden, Treasurer, Safeguarding Officer, Health & Safety Officer and Electoral Roll Officer were re-filled by appointment from among the PCC membership. None of the PCC members received remuneration.

6. The PCC continued to exercise its key functions with due care. We maintained oversight of the church’s finances; kept all policies and procedures under review; and gave full attention to all advice and guidance received from the Diocese. We gave the highest priority to the maintenance of a regular pattern of worship. The Standing Committee of the PCC continued to act as a secretariat and as a committee with (limited) delegated authority to take decisions between PCC meetings when needed; all such decisions were subsequently reported to the PCC.

7. Members of St Peter’s PCC and that of St Saviour’s Chalk Farm met on five occasions during the year in the Interregnum Joint Committee; they enjoyed a devotional retreat led by Revd Gareth Davies at the Royal Foundation of St Katharine in January; and their Churchwardens maintained regular contact throughout the year.

8. We received a Visitation by the Archdeacon, the Ven John Hawkins, on 20 November.

9. We remain grateful to David Barton for his continuing service as our parish administrator.

5

## **Worship and Mission**

## 10. St Peter’s mission statement remained unchanged:

We are here to live our faith in Jesus Christ through worship, by welcoming all, and by sharing the love of God with the wider community.

Although not comprehensively reviewed during the year, the Mission Action Plan remained one of the PCC’s key documents.

11. In the first eleven months of 2024, St Peter’s and St Saviour’s churches operated a shared schedule of Sunday services with each church aiming to offer either a Eucharist or Evening Prayer on a week-by-week alternating pattern. The plan was very largely achieved as it had been throughout 2023, again with the generous support of visiting priests. From 1 December 2024, St Peter’s committed to offering its own morning service on four Sundays each month: either a eucharistic service with a visiting priest or Morning Prayer led by the Curate. We continued with the agreement whereby the morning service on a Fifth Sunday in the month would be held at St Peter’s or St Saviour’s (and the morning service on 31 December was held at St Saviour’s).

12. We were pleased to be able to re-introduce the service of Choral Evensong on an occasional basis, initially on 20 October with a visit by the Symbel Choir under the direction of Anthony Chater. They visited again to sing Choral Evensong on 17 November. We returned to a regular Sunday evening service with Evening Prayer on 31 December.

13. In addition to Sunday services, St Peter’s held a mid-week Eucharist (when possible) or Morning Prayer each week and usually two services of Evening Prayer during the week. Lectio divina continued on a weekly basis in conjunction with St Saviour’s.

14. Clergy conducted three weddings and a dedication of marriage and a memorial service at St Peter’s during the year.

15. We record our gratitude to all the priests who visited us in 2024 and helped to maintain our eucharistic tradition. We observed all the seasons of the year and the main festivals.

16. There were 55 on the church electoral roll at the end of the year.

## **Giving**

17. St Peter’s continued to benefit from the generosity of its congregation and friends, shown though the Planned Giving scheme and in annual and occasional donations to the church.

18. The PCC also gratefully acknowledges the donation of flowers and provisions to the church, and volunteers’ giving of time and talents to the running of the church and the maintenance of the church garden.

## **Concerts and events**

6

19. The church hosted a total of nineteen concerts during the year, including four performances by our resident orchestra, Belsize Baroque, two by Belsize Community Choir and a recital by Paul Nicholson and Lucy Russell. The Donald Barnes Memorial Lecture was given by Revd Richard Carter, leader of St Martin-in-the-Fields’ Nazareth Community.

20. We held a Bank Holiday Open House with live music and refreshments 26 August, and a wreath-making workshop on 10 December.

## **Charitable causes**

21. The PCC presented three charitable causes to the congregation and concert audiences during the year: funds were raised for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, St Martin-in-the-Fields’ Christmas Appeal and St Mungo’s charity for the homeless.

## **Building works**

22. Following the delivery of Phase 1 of internal improvements in 2023, the PCC remained committed to another phase of improvements which it hoped to begin planning in 2025.

23. The PCC received a quinquennial inspection report from architect Karen Butti in November, and in the same month an energy audit report from Dr Paul Hamley. We undertook to give consideration to both reports 2025.

24. Works carried out in 2024 included: the re-painting of 6 external doors to the church and hall; the re-painting of safety markings in the nave; the construction of a piano platform; and the repair of the digital organ console.

## **In partnership**

25. The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama remained the lessee of the church hall under the terms of the two-year lease granted from July 2023. We agreed terms with The Hall School for their 2024 carol service and a future concert. We continued the arrangement with Frognal Gardens Ltd involving their cultivation of a nursery garden in a section of St Peter’s grounds.

## **Planning ahead**

26. We plan for the future with hope and confidence, thankful for our congregation and volunteers and our clergy supporters and for St Peter’s Curate. We pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as the PCC continues its work in furtherance of St Peter’s mission.

This report approved by the PCC on 23rd May 2025 and signed on its behalf by:
