The Vicar, Rev’d. Canon Becky Stephens, welcomed everyone and started the

meeting with a prayer.

26 people were present. Apologies were received from Tony Dening, Eric Swindells, David and Michelle Griffiths.

Minutes of the 116[th] annual meeting on 1st May 2022 were accepted as a true record and signed by the Vicar.

There were no matters arising.

Two nominations had been received for the position of Churchwarden. These were for Rosemary Coombes and Paul Jenner, both proposed by Jill Hannaford Bray and seconded by Naomi Johnson. Both were elected by unanimous vote.

They were continuing their term of office and the Vicar thanked them for their invaluable help and support during the past year. She was grateful for all they do and was looking forward to working with them for another 12 months.

This concluded the meeting.

St Peters APCM 2023

Minutes of the One Hundred and Fourth Annual Parochial Church Meeting held in the Church Hall on Sunday 23[rd] April 2023 at 12 noon

The Vicar, Rev’d. Canon Becky Stephens was in the chair.

Apologies were received from Tony Dening, Eric Swindells, David and Michelle

Griffiths.

Attendance: 26

1. Minutes of 103rd Annual Meeting

These were agreed and signed as a correct record. The vicar thanked Malcolm Harley for the meticulous way in which he recorded the minutes.

2. Matters Arising from the Minutes

None.

3. Presentation of the Electoral Roll

Elena Grant reported that the Electoral Roll, following the annual revision, contained 134 names. 45 were resident in the parish and 89 non-resident. This is the 5[th] year of the six year cycle.

8 new names have been added and 7 removed. The roll has not quite returned to pre Covid levels.

The vicar thanked Elena for her hard work and she was given a round of applause.

4. Treasurer’s Report & Financial Statement

Paul Jenner spoke about the report and accounts he had prepared which had been

available for viewing in the Annual Report booklet well ahead of the meeting. By the end of 2022 everything was operating normally, following the Covid pandemic.

A plate collection is now being taken in services and this seems to encourage more

giving. Unfortunately, regular givers have dropped from 63 to 57 during the year. Although we budgeted for a loss in 2022, in fact, we made a slight surplus of £6000. Our total assets stand at £465,000.

5

St Peters APCM 2023

Our commitment to net zero carbon by 2030 will require investment and a reduction in assets is possible. During the year, all the lighting in the hall was converted to LED and emergency lighting added but much more work has to be identified.

During questions, Garth White asked whether donations to CMS could be spread more evenly to assist in their budgeting. The vicar pointed out that, for this year, Nicci, our missionary link, had requested for support direct and so that had happened this year. Garth’s suggestion would be taken to the PCC. The vicar thought that we could be a pilot in a ‘Generosity Campaign’ (previously known as a Stewardship Campaign). Paul was thanked for all the work put into the accounts and those present showed their appreciation with a round of applause.

5. Churchwardens’ Report on the Fabric and Goods of the Church

The written report from the churchwardens was circulated in the church booklet. Rosemary Coombes reported that the church contents are in sound condition. The current inventory is almost complete.

6. Written reports included in the Annual Report Booklet

Becky referred briefly to each of the reports in the Annual Report booklet, asking for

any comments as she went through. PCC – Garth White commented on the reduction in meetings planned for the coming year. The vicar replied that the reduction had been accepted by the PCC on a majority vote. She stressed that most work was done in the sub committees She had therefore put forward the proposition as she was taking on Holy Trinity, and this would result in two separate sets of PCC meetings for her to attend. Su Taylor asked when we were likely to have the parking extension of 1 metre which had been discussed some time ago. Parking was extremely chaotic on a Thursday morning when several groups met at the same time. Paul Jenner replied that the job was still on the list of priorities, but it was proving difficult to obtain a contractor. The vicar thanked all who had contributed to the reports.

7. Appointment of Independent Examiner

Paul Jenner reported that Margaret Butterfield is willing to fulfil this role in the coming year. He, and St Peter’s, are extremely grateful to her for all her help. Proposed by Paul Jenner, seconded by Owen Cain, Margaret’s reappointment was agreed by a show of hands.

6

St Peters APCM 2023

8. Election of 4 members of Deanery Synod to serve for 3 years

There were only 2 nominations received for 4 vacancies.

Su Taylor – proposed by John Heywood, seconded by Ro Evershed

Sheila Richmond – proposed by Sheena Heaton, seconded by Simon Baker

As there were no other nominations, these were duly elected. The vicar remarked that, although we had filled only 2 out of 4 possible places, we are well represented on Deanery Synod, as our Diocesan Synod members, John Heywood and Sheena Heaton, are ex-officio members of Deanery Synod.

9. Election of 4 members of Parochial Church Council to serve for 3 years

4 nominations had been received for the 4 places available.

Sonia Clucas – proposed by Teniola Adebayo, seconded by Simon Baker

Malcolm Harley – proposed by John Heywood, seconded by Hazel Hallas

Michelle Griffiths – proposed by Rosemary Coombes, seconded by Ann Ball

Dickon Taylor – proposed by Naomi Johnson, seconded by Paul Jenner

As there were no other nominations, these were duly elected.

10. Election of 1 member of Parochial Church Council to serve for 2 years

1 nomination had been received.

Logan Pritchard – proposed by Naomi Johnson, seconded by Dickon Taylor

There being no other nominations he was duly elected.

11. Election of Sidespeople

Rosemary Coombes said that there were currently 13 names on the rota for sidespeople and all were willing to continue. These were duly accepted, with unanimous agreement.

Garth White asked whether it would be possible to return to stationing 2 welcomers at the chancel steps during communion. The wardens agreed to consider the request.

12. Vicar’s Remarks

The vicar reiterated some of the points included in her written report and then made the following comments; We have come an incredible way since our last APCM. So much has changed and so much has happened. My report in the annual report gave highlights and it was a tribute to the incredible work done by so many people to ensure the glory of God was shining in the parish of Maney. The reports written by others show how many people are a part of the church family at St Peter’s. They offer a glimpse into the mission and ministry of St Peter’s. There have been so many incredible moments but I want to highlight just a few Firstly, last Easter saw the reduction of a number of restrictions that has been put in place due the Covid-19 pandemic. We finally got to sit next to one another, sing without masks, the choir could return to sitting on one side, enabling them to hear one another better. We reintroduced the offertory of the elements at communion and we were able to move around the church more freely.

In the releasing of restrictions, I was able to see more clearly the beauty of the St Peter’s family, worshipping our Creator in glory. We were also able to celebrate together on many occasions. We reintroduced the fish and chip quiz, social gatherings and face to face meetings. A strong memory of mine was seeing who sat with who at coffee. I spent time guessing whilst we only met on zoom, but I got some of it wrong. To my delight, we mostly move around tables and act like a true family. Some other key moments of 2022 include the achievement of receiving the Gold Eco Church award. The Church of England asks us to strive to safeguard the integrity of creation. Eco Maney ensure this is central to our mission and ministry. I’m so grateful to Sheena, John, Andrew, Ann and the team for all they do to witness to the need to save the world God has created for us.

In September, we welcomed a new Director of Music. Logan has been an integral part of nurturing and encouraging our choir. They have gone from strength to strength. I’m so grateful to Logan and our choir for offering their gifts, enabling us to give glory to God. We continue to hope and pray for new choir members and Logan is planning to reach out to the community in order to do this. Our family communion service is well attended and brings an opportunity for our children to engage in the Eucharist. My thanks to Owen, the band and the singers in the choir.

Another highlight was seeing our curate, Emily, ordained as a priest. Her first Eucharist was shared by many of us and we have benefitted from Emily’s careful and pastoral priestly ministry. Emily has created a warm space, which continues to be in a stage of development, and has offered Bible study, alternative services and taken on the planning of Christian Aid.

Emily introduced Forest Church which was an extension of Pebbles. Pebbles goes from strength to strength and we engage with our families, both those who attend

church and those on the fringe. The children’s team have been thanked in the report but I know we will all be in awe of Sonia who graciously gives of her time and her gifts in order to bring the good news of Christ to all children.

8

St Peters APCM 2023

2022 also saw a growth of relationships in the parish. I am now on the board of directors at the YMCA and offer chaplaincy to the staff. We regularly take assemblies at the Deanery School and have a good relationship with Maney Hill School. We have built a relationship with the Town Council and have secured a grant for the warm space as well as appearing in their community magazine.

The PCC have engaged in lengthy conversations about the diocesan initiative, People and Places. We will be in an oversight area with Holy Trinity, St Chad’s and Emmanuel. We continue to work towards a way to engage with one another and share ministry. We know that I will become the Priest in Charge of Holy Trinity whilst thankfully remaining vicar of St Peter’s. This year will see us navigating what that will look like and welcoming new ministry among us. The current suggestion is that the post at Emmanuel will be filled by someone who will also have associate responsibility across the oversight area. There will soon be a meeting between the area dean, the churchwardens of each church and the incumbents. This will help us to understand a little better how we might work together and develop a say in which we can ensure more people come to know Christ. I am quite excited about the opportunities as we may share more in school ministry, visiting care homes or sharing in occasional offices.

The statistics for mission showed that we have grown in the past year. We have seen more people walk through our doors. Many of them have stayed which is thanks to the extraordinary welcome offered by those who stand at the door each Sunday. I’m delighted that others have felt able to return to church following time away. We have seen a good number of baptisms and have created a new baptism policy where we

invite families to church, and they often come. Sadly, with new life comes the end of life. We have lost some of our beloved family members in this past year. Some have moved away to be near family, others have died and returned to our Creator. Most recently, we have been shocked by the death of our sister in Christ, Ann Willis. May she rest in peace and rise in glory as we come towards the day of her funeral. I wanted to pay particular tribute to Ann as she was such a shining light for Christ, not only in this church but throughout the community.

Our pastoral care has continued to go from strength or strength. The care team now take communion to those we visit as well as offering visits for company. We have seen people grow in their vocations, with more people reading the lesson or offering intercession. We’re delighted that Dickon is exploring Reader ministry. However, we

still seek more Ministry among us. Particularly hoping for greater diversity. One major development in 2022 was the living in love and faith conversations. As an inclusive church, we have endeavoured to engage with the LLF course and ongoing discussions. We led the course for Lent and welcomed all questions. For some this has been a hard journey, for others, enlightening. Let’s keep the conversations going, particularly as General Synod seek to offer liturgy for prayers of blessing for those in same sex relationships.

9

St Peters APCM 2023

We have further developed our liturgical resources to help everyone to feel included in services. The front of each order of service highlights the best seating position for the hearing loop, describes the location of accessible toilets, invites people to ask for large print copies and offers gluten free wafers for those who need them. This is an ongoing offering and we continue to learn what helps to include people in our worship.

My ultimate hope is that our mission and ministry points to God. In everything we do, I challenge us to ask, “How does this glorify God?” or “How might this build the Kingdom?” I want to thank each and every one of you who glorifies God and grows the Kingdom. In the giving freely of your time and gifts, you enable Christ’s light to shine. Thank you!

Naturally, there are always people who contribute to the ministry in any church and I hope my report gave tribute to those people. The light of Christ shines even brighter because of you.

Some people who offer their time in an extraordinary way are mentioned in the report. However, there are some who give in more ways than you can imagine and I am deeply grateful.

Finally, let us do now what we intend to do going forward. Let us glorify God by giving thanks for the rising of Christ.

Alleluia, Christ is risen

He is risen indeed, alleluia!

13. Any Other Business

Tony Wells wished to propose a vote of thanks to Becky on behalf of St. Peter’s for all the hard work she has had done over the past year. The people present showed their appreciation with a round of applause.

The APCM concluded at 12.55 pm. with the Grace.

Vicar’s Report 2023

The following report is a testament to the incredible commitment made by so many members of our church family to the life of St Peter’s. I have now been part of the church for 4 years and it is a privilege to belong to a church where pastoral care, mission and worship are at its heart.

To write this report, I will use the Anglican Communion Five Marks of Mission. As a church, we hold these marks closely when we think about worship, ministry and mission. As I look back through the year, I’m delighted to have been reminded of the ways in which we have shared God’s love and aimed to build God’s Kingdom.

  1. To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom

This year has been one of great change as the diocesan strategy, People and Places, began to unfold after years of negotiation. St Peter’s joined an Oversight Area with Holy Trinity, St Chad’s and Emmanuel. In September, I became Priest in Charge of Holy Trinity and later in the year it was announced that I was be the Oversight Minister. Greater detail on the Oversight Area can be seen in the report. For St Peter’s, this has meant I am not leading services each week and have less visibility in the parish. I am so very grateful to Rev’d Emily Robottom-Scott for her support during this transition. Equally, Paul Jenner and Rosemary Coombes have ably managed the day to day running of the church where it has proved difficult for me to do so.

We have had to change our worship pattern to enable my ministry across two churches. I am now leading worship at St Peter’s on the 2[nd] and 4[th] Sundays of the month. Emily has been leading on the other Sundays and we have welcomed Rev’d Averil Laukner since she arrived in the Oversight Area as a retired priest.

We have established a set pattern and style for our Family service, which involves the children in numerous ways. We have enjoyed Evensong services, Taize and other styles of worship. Pebbles has become Messy Church again which has enabled us to bring in new families. As ever, I remain hugely grateful for the ministry of Sonia Clucas who works tirelessly to ensure our young people meet Jesus in exciting new ways.

We are blessed to have the ministry of Sheila Richmond as our Reader and Rev’d Andrew Ball. The ministry team all lead worship and preach, ensuring the Good News of the Kingdom is shared with our church community and beyond.

  1. To teach, baptise and nurture new believers

We welcomed a number of new people into our church throughout the year. Some are new to the area, others have moved to St Peter’s, whilst others are new to faith. We are always

11

St Peters APCM 2023

delighted to welcome new people and continue to ensure we offer a space where all can encounter God.

For those who are new to faith, we held an enquirers course during February. Following that course, one member chose to be confirmed and we celebrated on Pentecost as Bishop Anne led the service at the Cathedral. We also held a course during Lent, using Paula Gooder’s book, The Women of Holy Week.

We have had 11 baptisms this year and Sonia keeps in touch with the families, inviting them to events and sending anniversary cards.

  1. To respond to human need by loving service

Our Care Team is growing, and they continue to show exceptional love and care in the parish. We regularly visit people in their homes and in care homes with Holy Communion as part of a monthly rota. The Care Team visit numerous others for conversation and prayer.

This year has seen some very troubling times across the world. We have responding to this in various ways, including:

We have continued to offer pastoral support for the bereaved and have held funerals in church and at the crematorium. The prayer mound in the churchyard has become a popular spot to place flowers following a funeral. Our invitations to the All Souls service included a pot plant which had been a part of the Harvest Festival decorations.

This year, we supported a refugee who has been seeking asylum. I am glad to say, he now has residence in Coventry.

I remain on the Board of Directors at the YMCA where there is a focus on providing accommodation for care leavers and refugee children who arrive in the country without parents. I have been supporting the staff in a chaplaincy role, offering a listening ear and holding them in prayer.

12

St Peters APCM 2023

We have welcomed guest speakers to help us to engage with charities both here and abroad. Karen Mbayo from Safe Families gave a talk in the sermon slot about their support for families. We also welcomed Nicci Maxwell to speak about her work with CMS. Some members of the congregation put on a play to highlight awareness of Fair Trade and we continue to offer a Traidcraft stall once a month.

We continue to collect for the Foodbank at Sutton Baptist Church and offer support to individuals in the parish.

We remain committees to safeguarding. I am grateful for Dickon Taylor as our Safeguarding Coordinator. Safeguarding is something we ensure everyone is aware of. We regularly update PCC about Safeguarding matters and have an ongoing review of those who require DBS checks and Safeguarding training.

  1. To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth

Following our Gold Award, we have continued to ensure a constant focus on climate change and sustainability. Eco Maney have began to look at ways in which we can heat the church building in the future. We have committed to looking at ways in which we can store the electricity from the solar panels and have switched to greener energy companies for gas and electricity.

During Creationtide, we had a focus on caring for the earth. Forest Church helped the children to engage with the safeguarding of creation. We ensure that there is a thread through the prayer life of the church that focuses on seeking God’s wisdom to care for the world.

Also, this year we have had times of celebration as a church family. We celebrated the Coronation of King Charles, our Patronal Festival and Harvest by worshipping and eating together. My thanks, as ever, to the social committee who always make such events so brilliant.

In the summer, we said farewell to Angela Bagshaw and welcomed a new administrator, Jessica Simmons.

Sadly, we also said a final farewell to long term members of the congregation. At the beginning of the year, as mentioned in the previous report, Ann Willis and Barbara Chappell died, both unexpectedly. Mary Allen, Pat Gumbley, Brian German, Eric Swindells and Graham Gomm also lost their lives this year. We continue to hold their families in our prayers.

ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE ELECTORAL ROLL – APRIL 2024

This is the annual report for 2023/24.

The annual revision of the Electoral Roll this year was carried out between March 10th and April 7th.

This is year 6 of the 6-year Electoral Roll cycle, the final year of the current cycle.

From the table, it can be seen that the picture has remained very stable over this cycle with only very small year-on-year variations. The largest change was seen in 20/21 which might be attributed to the Covid outbreak when the church closed for significant periods. The annual figure for those on the Electoral Roll has returned to the number seen at the end of year one of this cycle.

During the year since the last APCM:

Current Electoral Roll Cycle

Year Total on Electoral
Roll
Resident Non-resident
2018- 2019 136 40 (29.4%) 96 (70.6%)
2019- 2020 138 45 (32.6%) 93 (67.4%)
2020- 2021 133 43 (32.3%) 90 (67.7%
2021 - 2022 133 43 (32.3%) 90 (67.7%)
2022 - 2023 134 45 (33.6%) 89 (66.4%)
2023- 2024 136 48 (35.2%) 88 (64.8%)

TREASURER’S REPORT FOR YEAR ENDING 31ST DECEMBER 2023

2023 saw us fully back to normal. This meant general giving (collections) increased further from £4,189 to £5,401 and Hall income from £29,246 to £30,091. Standing orders and donations fell again from £44,380 to £42,507, a result of regular givers again reducing from 57 at the start of the year to 55 at the end. This extra activity, as well as higher costs generally, led to an increase in expenditure from £95,107 to £101,693. We managed an operational surplus of £4,664.

The Statement of Financial Activities (Income and Expenditure Account) on page 4 of the accounts shows the surplus on Unrestricted Funds of £4,664. There was this year an increase in the valuation of our investments of £3,268 which increased this surplus to £7,932. Income from donors, which includes the weekly envelope scheme, regular giving by standing orders and direct debits, general and special collections and the recovery of tax by Gift Aid, again fell slightly this year by £684 to £59,033. Planned Giving decreased by £2,154 (or 4.8%) to £40,650.

The Diocese Common Fund this year was £39,200 which included £2,645 contribution towards the costs of a curate. The PCC agreed that this amount would increase in 2024 to £43,000. Our calculated donation to charities rose to £6,600. The Unrestricted Fund ended the year at £126,871.

This year’s works included the installation of handrails between the vestry and the choir and outside the vestry door. We also had repairs to stained glass windows in the church including the West Rose window. At the end of the year Designated funds stood at Church Emergency (£42,427), Hall Roof (£30,000), residue of Defibrilator (£118), Stone House, which funds our Youth work and Curate expenses, (£285,115), Organ Repairs (£10,894), residue of Computer equipment (£13) and Church Fabric (£2,142). An additional fund, Energy Grant, was created from a grant from the Diocese to assist with extra heating costs. The PCC decided to donate £1,000 to Erdington churches to support a heating project leaving £2,371 and the remainder will support higher tariffs at St Peter’s. With the help of a legacy from Frank Buzzard there was a surplus in Designated accounts of £23,164 and an increase in investment values of £8,008 which gave a total surplus of £31,172. At the end of the year the Designated funds stood at £373,080.

The total of Restricted funds is now £5,427. Details of all funds can be seen in Note 11 on page 14.

It is assumed that in 2024 we will incur another drop in funds from giving if things continue as now and costs will continue to rise. A budget has therefore been set with a deficit of just over £14,000.

At the end of the year the accounts show total funds of £505,378. The Balance Sheet on page 5 and Note 8 (Investments) on page 13 show where those funds are held with £201,244 on deposit with the Central Board of Finance (CBF) and investments (£257,066) representing longer term funds which are all invested in funds of the CBF.

PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL OF ST. PETER’S, MANEY

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31[ST] DECEMBER 2023

1. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTING POLICIES

The financial statements have been prepared under the Church Accounting Regulations 2006 in accordance with the current Statement of Recommended Practice, Accounting and Reporting by Charities and applicable accounting standard FRS102.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention except for investment assets, which are shown at fair valuation. The financial statements include all transactions, assets and liabilities for which the PCC is responsible in law. They do not include the accounts of church groups that owe their main affiliation to another body, nor those that are informal gatherings of church members.

Funds

Funds over which the PCC control is limited by statute or the terms of a trust deed, or which are restricted in their use have been defined as “restricted funds”. Funds which are controlled by the PCC and over which there are essentially no restrictions as to their use have been defined as “unrestricted funds”. Designated funds are unrestricted funds that have been set aside by the PCC for purposes designated by PCC policy. Such designations may be set aside from time to time according to policy decisions.

Restricted Funds comprise (a) income from endowments which is to be expended only on the restricted purposes intended by the donor, and (b) revenue donations or grants for a specific PCC activity intended by the donor.

Unrestricted Funds are income funds which are to be spent on the PCC’s general purposes.

Designated Funds are general funds set aside by the PCC for use in the future. Project funds are designated for particular projects for administration purposes only. Funds designated as invested in fixed assets for the PCC’s own use are abated in line with those assets’ annual depreciation charges in the SOFA. Designated funds remain unrestricted and the PCC will move any surplus to other general funds.

Funds Policy

The PCC have decided that, for 2023 onwards, the Unrestricted Funds are intended for short-term investment for income (up to £55,000) and 6 months operating expenditure (£55,000), and the remainder, surplus from legacies received in 2016, to be subject to PCC decisions for the time being.

In 2016 the PCC decided that the following will be designated: a buildings fund to allow items from the Quinquennial Report to be implemented together with emergency requirements (£140,000); a church fabric fund for items within the church (£5,000); a hall roof fund for the imminent repair (£30,000) and other small items (£1,100). The accounts show where spending has already taken place within these funds.

Income

All income is included in the Statement of Financial Activities when the PCC is legally entitled to them as income or capital respectively, ultimate receipt is probable and the amount to be recognised can be quantified with reasonable accuracy.

Planned giving, collections and similar donations are recognised when received. Tax refunds are recognised when the income to which they are related is received.

Grants received which are subject to pre conditions for entitlements or use specified by the donor which have not been met at the year end are included in creditors to be carried forward to the following year. Dividends and rents are accounted for when declared receivable, interest as and when accrued by the payer.

All income is accounted for gross.

Expenditure

Liabilities are recognised as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the PCC to pay out resources. Expenditure is included on an accruals basis under the following headings; all costs are allocated under a specific category:

Costs of raising funds

These are the costs associated with the PCC’s fundraising activities such as parish magazine printing, summer fete and Christmas bazaar event costs and church hall running costs.

Charitable expenditure

Charitable expenditure is analysed between ministry and mission expenditure. Ministry expenditure includes the direct costs of running the church such as the diocesan parish share, church building and service costs. The diocesan parish share expected to be paid over is accounted when due. Mission expenditure includes mission giving and donations, outreach in the community activities, messy church and associated staff costs.

Support costs consist of central management, administration and governance costs such as the independent examiner fees. These are costs which are directly attributable to a specific charitable activity.

Grants and donations payable are accounted for when authorized, when the award of the grant/donation has been specifically communicated to the recipient and when the PCC have agreed to pay the grant/donation without condition, or any condition attaching to the grant/donation is outside the control of the PCC. Grants/donations offered subject to certain conditions which have not been met at the year end are noted as a commitment, but not accrued as expenditure. Grants and donations are accounted for when paid over, or when awarded, if that award creates a binding or constructive obligation on the PCC.

Expenditure is accounted for gross.

______________

Tangible Fixed Assets and Depreciation

Movable church furnishings held by the vicar and churchwardens on special trust for the PCC and which require a faculty for disposal are inalienable property, listed in the church’s inventory, which can be inspected (at any reasonable time). For anything acquired prior to 2000 there is insufficient

cost information available and therefore such assets are not valued in the financial statements. Subsequently no individual item has cost more than £1,000 so all such expenditure has been written off when incurred. Land and buildings owned by the Church are depreciated on a straight line basis over 25 years.

Equipment used within the Church premises is written off when the asset is acquired.

Financial Instruments

The PCC has elected to apply the provision of section 11 “Basic Financial Instruments” and section 12 “Other Financial Instruments” of FRS102 in full to all of its financial instruments.

Debtors which are receivable within one year and which do not constitute a financing transaction are initially measured at the transaction price. Debtors are subsequently measured at amortised cost being the transaction price less any amounts settled and any impairment losses.

Creditors payable within one year and which do not constitute a financing transaction are initially measured at the transaction price. Creditors are subsequently measured at amortised cost being the transaction price less any amounts settled.

The Discretionary Fund for the Poor is the result of anonymous donations for the Vicar to use at his/her discretion. The Flower and Social Committee Funds were added in the year. The Stone House fund continues to support the Youth work in the parish; in 2021 there was no Youth Worker and the increase in fund value was due to 12 months of vacancy. The Quinquennial and Fire Safety Funds were used up to support work done in 2021.

The items in the Unrestricted fund represent the charities chosen by the PCC for the church's annual giving. This is determined from the formula of 10% of relevant net income. Relevant net income is calculated from total unrestricted general income, less apportionment, less VAT reclaimed, less grants for expenses, less legacies. In addition a proportion of Sunday coffee donations is given to Mothers’ Union.

PARISH REPORTS

Churchwardens’ Report on the Church Fabric, Ornaments, Hall and Grounds 2023

In October 2023, we received the annual Visitation from Brian Scotcher. He inspected our processes, registers, log book and inventory and found everything in order.

Our other annual external inspections have included:

Other repairs and enhancements have included:

Regular and routine activities include:

 Monthly check of emergency Hall lighting and Fire Alarm system

The monthly gardening group meets to tend the planters and monitor Tower Walk. Litter is collected by the caretaker and others. The church cleaning team aims to keep the church clean and tidy with a monthly clean on the third Friday. We thank all those who give their time and effort to the upkeep of the church and grounds. More volunteers would be most welcome at either of these gatherings.

The Building and Grounds Committee meets to review progress and minutes are sent to PCC. Currently, we are purchasing new carpet for the Hall back stairs and arranging for cleaning of the Upper Room carpet. A deep clean of the kitchen and cut back of shrubs in Tower Walk are amongst other priorities.

We are most grateful for the reliable services of Paul, our caretaker. He sets up and takes down furniture for meetings, parties and all other functions and keeps the Hall areas clean and tidy-all with a smile.

Jess is our new, cheerful Parish Administrator. She is developing good relationships with the Hall and Church users and is learning more about her role as the church year unfolds.

A thorough check of the inventory and condition of the contents of the church is underway. The result will be reported to the meeting.

Report on the Proceedings of Parochial Church Council 2023

The Council met 5 times during the year, with an average attendance of 65% (80% in 2022). As a trial the meeting frequency has dropped to 4 normal meetings per year (previously 6).

1 meeting was held exclusively on Zoom and the others in person, with an option to attend on Zoom.

An extraordinary meeting was held in November when Archdeacon Jenny attended to discuss changes which would result as St. Peter’s becomes part of the new oversight area.

In addition, an ‘Away Day’ was held at Dunstall Church in September. It gave the PCC an opportunity to get closer together in a pleasant environment, away from the normal business meetings. This was led by Rev Emily. It was agreed to repeat it every other year.

There are currently 22 members, including 2 elected members of Deanery Synod (our full allocation is 4 places), 2 elected members of Diocesan Synod, Churchwardens and deputies.

The Council operates through sub committees covering five main areas, namely:

Standing Committee Mission and Worship Eco Maney Buildings and Grounds Social

During the year, the Council considered and dealt with a range of issues relating to the church, hall and grounds, including-

Oversight Area

The oversight area consists of: Emmanuel, Wylde Green Holy Trinity, Sutton Coldfield St Chad’s, Sutton Coldfield St Peter’s, Maney

Since Rev’d Canon John Routh left in February 2023, we have seen some changes in our churches. Rev’d Jonathan Nicholas remains the vicar of St Chad’s. Rev’d Canon Becky Stephens remains the vicar of St Peter’s and also Priest in Charge and Holy Trinity. Emmanuel remains vacant, with a new appointment being made in 2024. Becky is to be the oversight minister and will receive training in the new year. This role will be to convene the churches and to create a shared mission plan.

During this year, the ministers have been meeting on a Wednesday for Morning Prayer. Brian Scotcher and Becky have started an Oversight Youth Group which sees around 12 children each fortnight.

Churches Together in Central Sutton Coldfield 2023

The Churches Together Group for Central Sutton continue to meet monthly for lunch throughout the year. We have seen a growth in the number of church leaders attending and are establishing a good relationship with Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church. The meetings remain a good space for sharing the missional needs across Sutton Coldfield, such as updates on the food banks hosted by Sutton Coldfield Baptist Church and Sutton Coldfield Methodist Church. It was St Peter’s turn to host the Churches Together service during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Many members from the different denominations across Sutton Coldfield attended and it proved to be a wonderful evening of shared worship and prayer.

Rev’d Emily Robottom-Scott

Parish Administrator

This year has seen a change in administration with me taking on the role as of October 2023. I have been learning about the role and how the church runs. I have also learnt about all the different services over Christmas and Easter. I have found much joy in working with Paul our caretaker with whom I work closely with around what has been requested for how the hall is set up for parties and doing the fire alarm check among many other things to keep the hall running smoothly.

Mission, Life and Worship – 2023

This had been operating in two groups, but the decision had been taken to amalgamate them, so this report relates to the single committee. As always, we reviewed the special services and events which had most recently taken place and planned for those to come. Particular mention was made of the excellence of the musical contributions under our new director of music. Other matters discussed were the use of silk flowers to replace pollenheavy ones such as lilies, which cause great discomfort to those allergic to the pollen; handrails to improve access on steps for those with disability difficulties; and a replanning of the family communion service to make it easier for children to take part. The PCC away day at Dunstall in October was much appreciated, and hopefully would be repeated in the future; and the problem of car parking for classes on Thursday mornings at the same time as a service was also discussed.

’ Children s Ministry – 2023

We still have our wonderful Sunday Club and although numbers are small our children are enthusiastic and keen to take part. We even have our own pianist as Posi is learning to play the piano and can play for our Sunday Club song. It is great to see talents and abilities develop. Mo, Lorna and Tenny are a great team of helpers who are beginning to take on some of the teaching and planning.

Some children were able to take part during Family Communion Services including reading, leading prayers alongside parents and even helping during the Eucharist. The children’s corner is always popular and provides space for families with younger children. It is also a place for our displays about things we have learned.

We held 3 Pebbles sessions in 2023 including Pancake Pebbles, Easter Pebbles and Creation Pebbles. Several families attended each time. We introduced more activities as we move towards changing to Messy Church in 2024. This is to help extend the age range and is a more recognisable term. We hope that we will attract more families. Slow beginnings at present. Rev Emily led the worship; Owen led our music and many members of the congregation helped lead activities and served the refreshments. All help is greatly appreciated.

36

St Peters APCM 2023

Rev Emily led the Crib Service at Christmas time and we welcomed back some families who attended the previous year. Some adults came along too! The Nativity Service gave an opportunity for all ages to dress up to tell the story.

We celebrated 11 baptisms. Each child was given a card, teddy and information about the children’s ministry at St Peter’s. We also sent baptism anniversary cards to children baptised in 2022.

Please pray for our children and young people and for the wonderful team of helpers.

th 7 Sutton Coldfield Scout Group- 2023

The Scout Group has continued to thrive over the last twelve months as we deliver a programme full of fun, challenge and adventure for all three sections of the Group: Beavers (6 to 8 years old), Cubs (8 to10½) and Scouts (10½ to 14). We remain at capacity with 63 boys and girls in the Group and a very full waiting list. I am delighted that we have seen a small growth in adult volunteers over the last year and there are now 11 of us delivering activities on a regular basis. The volunteering opportunities can be very flexible and, if you would like to join us, this does not have to be an ‘every week’ commitment.

All three of our sections have taken part in some fabulous activities over the year, including: sleepovers and camps, outdoor activities such as hikes, water sports, climbing, cooking over open fires, archery, etc, and indoor activities including games, art and culture, learning about different cultures, and some disability awareness – all of our Beavers and Cubs can introduce themselves with British Sign Language.

Our own programme is supplemented by some District Activities that enable our young people to work with others from across Sutton. Over the last year we have taken part in District Camps, outings, competitions (cooking, rafting, chess, etc) and hiking. Our Leaders have also helped to organise many of these activities and I know their efforts are appreciated by others across the District.

We have also continued to support The Royal Sutton Fun Run with traffic management and marshalling duties – and are looking forward to doing so again at the start of June this year. In addition to the clutch of Chief Scout Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards achieved by our young people it was also great to see some awards for our Leaders. Josh Holmes received his Wood Badge for completing his training and is now the lead volunteer for Cubs, Eileen Lyndon received an award for 40 years of service (she tells me she started very young), and Tim Ellis, our Treasurer, received a Medal of Merit for “outstanding, keen, conscientious, imaginative and dedicated service over a sustained period, of at least 12 years duration”.

All of our volunteer Leaders are incredibly generous with their time and energy on a very regular basis. My thanks goes to Julie Ellis (no relation), Eileen Lyndon, Josh Holmes, Dave Archer, Lorna Scully, Matt Brain, Matthew Ellis (also no relation to me … but related to Julie),

Abbie Lyndon (related to Eileen), Mark Stokes and Nicola Stansbie for everything they do. I am also grateful to Darrell Fleming and Tim Ellis (related) for the ‘behind the scenes’ support and to our team of occasional helpers who are always happy to stand by our side when asked.

We are looking forward to another fun Scouting year ahead and remain grateful for the support and kind words from all at St Peter’s. Music at Maney

The past year has been one of success for the Music at St. Peter’s. It was a pleasure, in August, to demonstrate our organ to The Organ Club, where around forty organists came to St. Peter’s to hear, and play the instrument. The church, and its instrument was subsequently published in the club’s annual tour book, and it was great to see the organ appreciated by an extended group of people, outside of our church community.

The choir have sung a handful of choral services of note, the Advent Carol Service, and Nine Lessons being particular highlights. The Nine Lessons Carol Service was sung by the choir of St. Peter’s alone. The choristers were stretched, grappling with pieces in different styles, demanding control over pitch, tuning, and diction. The music was delivered confidently and stylishly, and it was nice to recognise our strengths as a choir. The choir have collaborated with different choirs on two occasions over the past year. The St. Eligius Singers joined us for our Advent Carol Service, and with over forty singers, the choir’s sound was admired for its strength and confidence. Also, the choir of Holy Trinity joined us for our Ash Wednesday Service, singing the anthem Call to Remembrance, by Farrant.

The choir continues weekly Wednesday evening rehearsals, and contributes regularly to Sunday services with a monthly anthem. It was pleasing on Easter Day for the choir to open the Service with an introit, O Sons and Daughters, and to sing a chorally set Agnus Dei. Over the next year, it would be good to see the choir sing other portions of the liturgy, as well as learning some new Communion Settings, to add variety to our weekly musical diet at St. Peter’s. Discussions are taking place concerning which settings would be the most suitable.

The choir continue to contribute regularly to other services, such as funerals, singing hymns and anthems, as requested. It was a great sadness to bid farewell to Eric Swindells this year, for which the choir sung a setting of Brother, Sister, let me serve you, as well as a selection of hymns. For special occasions, the help of organists James Burke and John Pryer has been appreciated, along with the continued contributions of Jane, and Owen to our weekly services.

38

St Peters APCM 2023

As ever, choir recruitment is something that could do with some additional attention; having a larger core of singers for Sunday morning Eucharists would be helpful. Some attention was given to this issue earlier on in the year, with the production of leaflets, a banner, and some social media promotion. This is something that will require continued and creative ongoing work, in order to attract some new members.

It is my hope that a joint evensong will take place before the summer holidays, containing some challenging and enjoyable repertoire. The ensuing year has every reason to be a successful one for the music at St. Peter’s, and the positive and ‘can-do’ attitude of the choir very much paves the way for this.

Care Team – 2023

The Care Team aims to share the love and care of God with those in our church and community who cannot, for whatever reason, attend church. We offer support through visits, phone calls, texts, emails, letters, cards and practical help where this is possible.

We meet 3 times a year as a group, reviewing the needs of those we contact. Each of us keeps our own personal record of contacts made. This is helpful in identifying any ‘gaps’ in provision when we meet together so that we can then allocate personnel to try and meet the needs of individuals. Our contact ranges from the occasional phone call to fortnightly, monthly or occasional visits. Home Communions continue to be taken to those who request it.

The Team assisted in the distribution of Harvest items and Christmas Hampers during the year. Some members of the Care Team are involved with the Cedar Group. The Team gratefully acknowledges the ongoing care shown by members of the congregation to others. Please do let us know of anyone who is unwell or in need of assistance so we can be in touch, if this is desired. Every member of the Team updates their Safeguarding Training and DBS checks as necessary. Alongside Rev’d Canon Becky Stephens and Rev’d Emily Rowbottom-Scott, the Care Team comprises: Anne Ball, Rosemary Coombes, Mo Dening, Elena Grant, Hazel Hallas, Sheila Richmond and Christine White.

Cedar Group Report

Cedar Group continues to meet on the first and third Tuesdays of the month in the Hall from 2-4pm.

It is an informal, friendly social group offering company and mutual support for those who live alone, carers for loved ones, couples, friends or anyone looking for friendship.

Our group numbers, on average, 10-12 people and we have recently been glad to welcome visits from residents and staff of Sutton Grange Care Home.

Our fortnightly donation of £1 covers the cost of refreshments, cards and the occasional donation to charity.

New members always welcome. See Movita Dening, Phil Fox, Rosemary Coombes.

Social Committee 2023

The Social Committee: Janet Harley, Sonia Clucas, Frances Heywood, Susie Griffiths, Jane Jenner, Glenys Sperring and our new members Pam Cheney and Nicola Stansbie. What a team!

As usual the team have been busy with a range of activities and events supporting the work of the church.

40 people attended the quiz evening in January including some non-church people. Simon did a wonderful job writing and presenting the quiz. It was a very enjoyable and relaxed evening with lots of laughs and delicious food. Also, we made a profit of £168.90.

We celebrated the coronation of King Charles in style with cake and Prosecco. Jane made a wonderful celebration cake and there were activities for children too.

For Christian aid we held a Big Breakfast which was delicious and helped raise valuable funds. There was also a coffee morning which was well attended and there were SO many cakes it was hard to choose.

Our afternoon tea was a great success. The tables were laid out beautifully with lovely table cloths and napkins, the best china and of course delicious cakes and scones. Naomi gave an interesting talk to inform people of the project in Malawi to provide roofs for churches and clergy houses. About 40 people attended and over £800 was raised for the project.

We were delighted to welcome Nicci Maxwell (our CMS Mission Partner) to update us on the work in Uganda. We shared a lunch together. The congregation were very generous in providing the food which was very tasty. People were happy to support Nicci. We were especially glad to welcome visitors.

We celebrated our Patronal Festival and Harvest with Bring and Share lunches which were well attended. It was a lovely opportunity to celebrate God’s blessings to us.

40

St Peters APCM 2023

We organised refreshments after the Church Warden’s Service, at the Heritage Open Day and after funerals of church members sadly departed.

The Christmas celebrations included going out for lunch. Thanks to Janet for organizing this. We also served mulled wine and mince pies after the Carol Service.

I would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way to the success of our events. And a big thank you to our hard-working committee. You are amazing!

Sonia Clucas

Eco Maney

In the last year the Eco Maney Team has continued with our standard tasks of gardening, writing for the newsletter and running the Fair Trade & Eco Goods Stall, on a monthly basis.

We plant flowers in the tubs and beds; and try to keep Tower Walk tidy. We continue to contribute to the efforts to reduce energy usage across the whole diocese. We do this through membership of several groups – the Deanery Environment Group, the subcommittees of the Bishop’s Environment Board, Birmingham Anglicans for Climate Action, providing assessments for Eco Church Gold Awards.

Some of our particular activities in this year have been a) giving advice to a new environment group at St John’s Walmley, b) a Recycling Display for Creationtide and c) helping to write a training course for the diocese entitled “The Climate Crisis – our Christian Response”. We were also in the lead of the ecumenical lobbying of Andrew Mitchell, which is an Eco Church task.

In 2014 St Peter’s started to campaign on the sale of shares in oil and gas companies by the Church of England. This reached a milestone in March 2024 when our diocese confirmed that it no longer held such investments.

The PCC has recently commissioned Eco Maney to write the plan for changing the church and hall heating away from gas.

As you’ll see we have recruited two new members and are sad at the retirement of Neville due to illness.

Church Mission Society

Our mission partner, Dr Nicci Maxwell, completed her service in Kisoro, Uganda (at the Potter's Village Medical Centre) last summer and returned to the UK. In the autumn Nicci studied in Liverpool for the Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, which she passed with distinction - in spite of not having done any formal exams for some 20 years!

After Christmas Nicci spent time in South Africa with her mother and extended family, and has since been exploring with CMS various projects in East Africa. We await with interest to hear what the Lord has called her to next. Please do continue to pray for Nicci - for her good health, for her new "adventure", for opportunity to use her new knowledge - and also remember the Staff at Kisoro.

Christian Aid – 2023

Thank you to everyone who donated, gave their time and baked cakes for our Christian Aid fundraiser events in 2023. We hosted a Big Brekkie on the Sunday of Christian Aid Week, followed by a Coffee Morning on the Monday. Both were a great success and Batanai Padya, the Christian Aid Church Engagement and Fundraising Officer for West Midlands also came to support us. In total we managed to raise a fantastic £1316.

Since Reverend Emily will be finishing her curacy with us this year (2024), she has passed on the role of Christian Aid organiser for St Peter’s to Nicola Stansbie. Please do pray for Nicola as she takes on this new role and as she works with Emily to arrange our Christian Aid events for 2024.

Rev’d Emily Robottom-Scott

Malawi Report - 2023

In April 2023, an appeal for goods for the Birmingham Malawi container was raised and the response, as in 2022 was overwhelmingly positive. However, in October we discovered that the container had been held at the dockyard as the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) demanded duty be paid on items upon we (CofE Birmingham) have never paid duty before. With the hard work of the Mission task group, headed by Rev Paul Bracher, the container was finally released, and the items reached the recipients in early November.

In June, the Social committee hosted an afternoon tea, with the funds raised being allocated to Malawi. I had the opportunity to highlight the current projects that these funds would be used for, namely plans to provide roofs for churches and clergy accommodation across the country and to support the rebuilding of the church structure in Southern Malawi, after

42

years of corruption. The fundraiser was a huge success, and my thanks go to all involved with the fundraiser for their hard work.

As always, the mission partnership is only as successful as it is, due to the generosity of spirit of the community and friends of St Peter’s. My thanks to all who have contributed in any way to helping our neighbors in the ‘warm heart of Africa’.
