Attendance: 24

1. Minutes of 102[nd] Annual Meeting

These were agreed and signed as a correct record.

2. Matters Arising from the Minutes

None

3. Presentation of the Electoral Roll

Elena Grant reported that the Electoral Roll, following the annual revision, contained 133 names. 45 were resident in the parish and 88 non resident. This is the 4[th] year of the six year cycle.

5 new names have been added (3 are under 20) and 6 removed. The roll is now a list of names only and does not contain addresses.

4. Treasurer’s Report & Financial Statement

Paul Jenner spoke about the report and accounts he’d prepared, which had been available for viewing in the Annual Report booklet well ahead of the meeting. 2021 has been another year affected by Covid. However, by the middle of the year, things were beginning to get back to normal. Hall receipts were down as were collections.

Unrestricted income was down by £18000, total church income by £7500 and hall income by £8300 compared with 2019 (last normal year before covid). However, expenditure was down by £12000.

Paul claimed various grants during 2021 and as a consequence the accounts showed an overall profit of £3836 for 2021.

2022

7

St Peter’s APCM 2022

2022 is looking better as hall rentals are high and investments are doing well. Designated funds have risen by £5000 since the start of the year. However, there will be no help from grants for this year. A Stewardship Campaign is due.

During the year Margaret Butterfield was appointed as Independent Examiner.

Garth White raised a question about Charitable Giving. St. Peter’s has always had a link with CMS and supported them financially. However, they were not mentioned specifically this year. Could they be included when considering charities in the future? Paul replied that events during the year had raised funds for CMS but were not included in ‘charitable giving’ as this only referred to our giving from PCC.

Paul was thanked for all the work put into the accounts and those present showed their appreciation with a round of applause.

5. Churchwardens’ Report on the Fabric and Goods of the Church

Rosemary Coombes reported that the church contents are in sound condition and are as shown in the inventory. She thanked Naomi Johnson and Eric Swindells for their help. The written report from the churchwardens was circulated in the church booklet.

6. Written reports include in the Annual Report Booklet

Becky referred briefly to each of the reports in the Annual Report booklet, asking for any comments as she went through.

PCC – Breakfast church is currently on hold. There is a need to engage with families with younger children.

Group Council – Things are now starting to happen together again. Pulpit exchange is due to restart soon.

Mission and Outreach – Garth White queried the baptism booking forms, now adapted to use the title “parent” instead of “mother” and “father”.

Music – this had been badly missed during lockdown and it was good to see this returning to normal.

7. Appointment of Independent Examiner

Paul Jenner reported that Margaret Butterfield is willing to fulfil this role in the coming year. He, and St Peter’s, are extremely grateful to her for all her help. Proposed by Paul Jenner, seconded by Eric Swindells, Margaret’s reappointment was agreed by a show of hands.

8. Election of 4 members of Parochial Church Council to serve for 3 years

There were only 3 nominations for 4 vacancies:

Tony Wells – proposed by David Griffiths, seconded by Malcolm Harley Neville Benyon - proposed by Rosemary Coombes, seconded by Paul Jenner Jill Hannaford Bray - proposed by Rosemary Coombes, seconded by Suzie Griffiths As there were no other nominations, these were duly elected.

9. Election of Sides people

Rosemary Coombes said that there were currently 10 names on the rota for sidespeople and all were willing to continue. It was proposed by Michelle Holland, seconded by Naomi Johnson that the list be accepted, with unanimous agreement.

10. Vicars Remarks

The vicar reiterated some of the points included in her written report and then made the following comments;

In my sermon, I spoke about encountering the risen Christ. There are people who offer themselves with such grace and humility at St Peters, and without them we could not witness to the incredible joy of being in relationship with Christ. There are of course so many people who give of their time, gifts and energy but there are 2 I particularly want to mention… they are of course Paul and Rosemary. They are the most extraordinary churchwardens. Of course, it is not simply the gift of churchwardening that they offer but they each do other incredibly valuable and necessary roles. Paul manages all of our finances – an essential task but one that is so often thankless. Rosemary manages our care and cleaning teams with grace and humility, as she also is a full and active part of those teams.

My job is made all the more effective having churchwardens such as Paul and Rosemary. Because of all that they do, I have time to visit the sick and dying, to prepare those who are to be baptized, married or confirmed well, I can spend quality time with those who are seeking faith, I can respond to the mass of emails I receive on a daily basis. Thank you.

However, there are of course many many other people who need thanking and I will always leave someone out. However, being thankful is important, so my thanks to the PCC, those outgoing and those incoming. Today we have a new PCC, it is not the old PCC with new members – it is a fully new PCC. It’s been a joy to work alongside those who are leaving the committee and I’m excited about working alongside those who are representing the church for the first time.

My thanks to everyone on a committee, there are so many of them, as you can see in the report. Particular thanks to those who are chair or secretary to a committee, your minute taking agenda writing, quiet nudging for the next meeting date does not go unnoticed. Mostly thanks to Malcolm who has incredible wisdom and knowledge regarding the running of the PCC – thank you!

St Peter’s APCM 2022

To those on the Care Team – thank you for being the light of Christ to many people who cannot join us in the church building any longer, thank you for your care, wisdom and love which holds us all together as a family of God’s children. Thank you too to Mo, Phil and Rosemary for the love they offer at Cedar Club, a life line to so many.

To those who clean the church and maintain the grounds… without you we could not witness to the generous love of God as seen by passers by and worshippers alike. To Eco Maney, thank you for enabling us to witness to the fifth mark of mission.

To the incredibly gifted flower arrangers, to Naomi, our devoted sacristan, to Lorna and Michelle our servers, thank you for so ably preparing our church for worship. I’m always deeply thankful for your ministries.

To those who share in leading worship, to the intercessors and to Sheena for preparing the rota, those who read and Sheila for preparing that rota, to Hazel, John and Malcolm for managing the sound system, to the choir who work so hard to lead us in songs of praise, to our organists Eric and Jane, to Owen, Naomi and Shini for being our band, to David and Philip who ring the bell calling us to worship, to all of our welcomers who offer a smile as we arrive, and to our ministers Andrew, Emily, Ann and Sheila – thank you for your gifts and generosity in enabling us to encounter and praise God each Sunday.

Equal thanks to those who offer the same ministry on a Thursday, particularly to Mo. To those who work with our children and young people, I am deeply indebted. Sonia, you are a true living saint and the children you encounter will forever know the love God has for them and others through your most valuable work. My thanks to that whole 2021 team – Rosemary, Mo, Barbara and Katy. I’m delighted that more are joining that team for 2022, and we have already given thanks as Barbara has stepped away after many many years of working with our children.

And finally, if not most importantly…. Those who make our coffee…. So many of you offer yourselves for this rota and without you my Sunday and Thursday mornings wouldn’t be there same, since coffee is God’s greatest gift to humanity!!!! Thank you, Jane and Sue, for ensuring coffee and tea is offered after our services, and thank you to all who are on the rota. Some of us have handed on responsibilities in 2021, among them are Bunny who has organised the flower rota so efficiently, and Sonia who has stepped back from coordinating Mothers Union.

I know there are so many more people I could and should thank, and I hope my report includes those. However, each and every one of you highlight God’s presence among us and witness to the Gospel. Simply by being a part of this church family you are a gift.

11. Any Other Business

Garth White wished to record thanks to Becky on behalf of St. Peter’s for all the hard work she has had to do in order to guide us through the last year, made particularly difficult due to the covid epidemic. The people present showed their appreciation with a round of applause.

The APCM concluded at 1.05 pm.

’ - VICAR S REPORT 2022

2022 began with a continuing of restrictions in the way we worshipped at St Peter’s. However, by Easter Sunday we had lifted almost all of our restrictions and by the end of 2022 we had reintroduced the offertory as well as the choir being sat without the restriction of social distancing. We are yet to reintroduce the common cup.

The reports that follow, I am delighted to say, resemble something a little more familiar to the life of St Peter’s prior to the first lockdown of March 2020. However, since my journey with St Peter’s began at that time, I continue to learn about the way things have always been done. I have been particularly delighted to be able to gather in person for PCC meetings and other committees, as well as to offer face to face bible study and social gatherings.

2022 saw a number of significant events. In June we celebrated the Platinum Jubilee marking 70 years of service from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We enjoyed a special service and a community picnic on the church lawn.

Sadly, just a few months later, we marked the death of the Queen. We held a service to celebrate her life and opened the church daily for people to come and write in a book of condolence and light a candle. The community also laid flowers on the prayer mound.

Another significant service was of a more joyful note as I was finally Installed as Vicar of St Peter’s by Archdeacon Jenny Tomlinson on 20th November. My licensing by Bishop Anne took place on Zoom on 1st April 2020 due to the first lock down but an installation has to happen in person. It was a real joy to celebrate together after such a long wait.

Worship

Throughout 2022, worship has been offered each Sunday in the church building as well as continuing a livestream to our Facebook page. The number of people attending the Sunday service is growing and is now similar to that of 2019 at around 60 people. We are delighted to have people joining us regularly online also.

In addition to Sundays, we have offered a BCP Communion service each Thursday at 10.30am. This is growing in number, we often see around 16 people.

Worship is led by myself, Rev’d Emily Robottom-Scott, Rev’d Andrew Ball and our Readers, Ann Willis and Sheila Richmond. We have a strong team of intercessors led by Sheena Heaton and Sheila Richmond organises the readers for the main service. Lorna Scully and Michelle Griffiths continue as our servers and we have been glad to once again include Eucharistic ministers to serve at the altar. Naomi Johnson offers an invaluable ministry as Sacristan.

In September, Eric Swindells stood down from his role as Director of Music. Eric has been an extraordinary support during the pandemic, enabling us to continue to use music within our worship. He has supported the choir and encouraged the congregation to learn new hymns. I

2022

11

St Peter’s APCM 2022

want to say a huge thank you to Eric for all he has done for the worship at St Peter’s, I feel blessed to have worked alongside him.

We are delighted that Logan Pritchard has taken over the role of Director of Music bringing new ideas and introducing sung psalms. There is more about music in Logan’s report.

Our intergenerational Family Communion service has continued to be a great success as we have been able to reintroduce the band and have singers to lead the worship songs. This service is Eucharistic, using one of the additional Eucharistic Prayers. The children are encouraged to sit at the front and join in with the liturgy.

Pebbles and Sunday Club continue for our younger children. We have been delighted to welcome Teniola Adebayo and Lorna Cain to the Sunday Club team.

Mission and Outreach

As well as offering services online, we continued to engage with our local community by offering ways to worship, reflect and pray outside. Again, we offered items for people to take from the steps, a net to tie ribbons on for Remembrance, a cross to fill at All Souls, and a Nativity scene. We offered a Holy Week trail in the church grounds, and once again Sheena Heaton created a beautiful Easter garden on the prayer mound.

We changed how we offered the Nativity this year and had a pop-up Nativity involving anyone who wanted to take part. The Crib service was again well attended.

We have offered two Bible studies this year. One was for those at the beginning of their faith journey, using the Pilgrim Course. For our Lent Study we followed the Living in Love and Faith course which was held twice weekly, one on zoom and one in person.

We have been delighted to continue offering a service of Holy Communion at Sutton Park Grange Care Home. Emily has taken responsibility for this service and visits each fortnight. We have seen a growth in the number of people who require Home Communion and have therefore created a small team of Eucharistic ministers who will be trained in early 2023.

We have supported local people in many ways including collecting food for the foodbanks and household goods for Ukrainian families. We have supported individuals with travel, heating and energy costs. In the autumn, the cost of living crisis meant that people were struggling with the rising cost of energy. In response to this, Emily successfully sought a grant from Sutton Coldfield Town Council and set up a warm space on a Monday morning, called ‘Coffee and Craft’. This will continue into the new year.

I am now on the Board of Directors at the Sutton Coldfield YMCA and offer chaplaincy to the staff. I intend to extend this to their residents in 2023.

Eco Maney have again achieved a high standard of success this year. St Peter’s has now received the Eco Church Gold award after a huge amount of work from Sheena Heaton, John Haywood and Anne and Andrew Ball. My heartfelt thanks to them all.

2022

12

St Peter’s APCM 2022

It was delightful to see the Christmas market back in full swing. Not only is it a great fundraiser but it is a wonderful occasion and so much fun. My sincere thanks to Mo Dening for organising the event and ensuring it is such a great success.

Last but not least, we have been grateful for a grant from the diocese towards purchasing a card reading machine. This has enabled us to increase our giving, particularly at occasional offices.

Schools

I am delighted that we have now formed a good relationship with the Deanery School and Emily and I take an assembly there monthly. Dickon Taylor is a church governor at the school.

I have been invited to lead assemblies at Maney Hill Primary School and years 3 & 4 came into the church for their Christmas Service. We look forward to welcoming Reception for their RE topic in March 2023.

We have been invited into Sutton Coldfield Grammar School for Girls where we support them in their GCSE RE curriculum.

Roles and responsibilities

This year has seen a steady continuation of all roles and responsibilities, other than the change in Director of Music. As ever, I am humbled to see the devotion of each person to their ministry among us. To thank everyone individually would take far too long but there are a few who deserve a particular mention. (This is always a dangerous path to tread, but I hope you will agree, there are people who offer their gifts and time in extraordinary ways.)

Firstly, Sonia Clucas. Sonia gives of herself with such humility. Her gifts in working with and amongst younger children are extraordinary. Sunday Club and Pebbles are planned with great precision as the children are taught to know and love Jesus. Sonia is rarely able to join the Sunday service, even in our Family Communion service she sits with the children helping them to engage with the liturgy. St Peter’s are extraordinarily blessed by Sonia’s faithfulness, love of children and her devotion to their growth in faith. Thank you, Sonia, from the bottom of my heart.

Our churchwardens are exemplary as they uphold the values of St Peter’s church and ensure the smooth running of worship, mission and the church buildings. They are an incredible support to me and Emily whilst offering pastoral care and love to our church family.

Rosemary Coombes not only devotes her time as churchwarden but also leads the Care Team, the cleaning team, runs Cedar Group alongside Mo and Phil, and organises the rota for services. Paul Jenner not only devotes his time as churchwarden but also ably manages our finances as our treasurer. Both Rosemary and Paul sing in the choir and support all church events. For you both, I am deeply grateful. Thank you for all you do.

Malcolm Harley very quietly organises our PCC and ensures we run efficiently and legally. Naomi Johnson ensures the church is ready for worship and baptisms seamlessly. Jane Jenner ensures she knows our coffee and tea preferences and serves us readily after our Sunday service.

2022

13

St Peter’s APCM 2022

Finally, there are those who faithfully lead our worship. Andrew Ball, Emily Robottom-Scott, Ann Willis, Sheila Richmond, Logan Pritchard, our choir, and our band led by Owen Cain. It is a privilege to lead worship with such a gifted and faithful team of people.

It now feels as though our staff team have been with us for a long while. I’m delighted that Angela Bagshaw and Paul Micklewright have fitted into life at St Peter’s so well. Angela has a wonderful relationship with our hall users and Paul can turn his hand to any job and does so willingly and always with a smile on his face.

I know there are many more people who give of their time. Thank you to you all, nothing goes unnoticed.

This year Rev’d Emily was priested at Birmingham Cathedral. It was a joyous occasion and a real privilege to receive communion from her when she presided for the first time. We are grateful for Emily’s continued ministry among us.

It is always a joy to see the gifts of God’s people being used to build God’s Kingdom. We thank all those who have offered their time and gifts in the past and those who are now offering themselves in service to God at St Peter’s.

Occasional offices

In 2022, we took 16 funerals. Among them were some beloved members of our church community. May they all rest in peace and rise in glory. As I write this, in March 2023, we are grieving the loss of Ann Willis, a Reader of St Peter’s mentioned throughout this report. We give thanks for her ministry among us and will miss her commitment to God and this church, along with her strong and steady faith.

We have also taken 3 weddings, including the wedding of beloved congregation members David and Michelle Griffiths, and 9 baptisms.

Conclusion

There is so much to share, much of which you will read throughout this report. There are many people who offer extraordinary gifts at St Peter’s, much of which happens behind the scenes. I am sorry I could not mention every name, but please know how grateful I am and that you are all often in my prayers.

It is a privilege to be the Vicar of St Peter’s, Maney. I’m very much looking forward to 2023 as we continue our focus on glorifying God and growing the Kingdom.

TREASURER’S REPORT FOR YEAR ENDING 31[ST] DECEMBER 2022

During 2022 we saw operations return to normal with the ending of social distancing and the return to collections being taken by hand. This saw general giving (collections) increase further from £1,777 to £4,189 and Hall income from £15,166 to £29,246. Standing orders and donations fell slightly from £43,614 to £42,440 as a result of regular givers reducing from 63 at the start of the year to 57 at the end. This extra activity, as well as higher costs generally, led to an increase in expenditure from £86,875 to £95,107. Even without grants this year there was an operational surplus of £6,233.

The Statement of Financial Activities (Income and Expenditure Account) on page 4 of the accounts shows the surplus on Unrestricted Funds of £6,233. There was, unfortunately, a fall in the valuation of our investments of £4,635 which reduced this surplus to £1,598. Income from donors, which includes the weekly envelope scheme, regular giving by standing orders and direct debits, general and special collections and the recovery of tax by Gift Aid, fell slightly this year by £500 to £59,717. Planned Giving decreased by £3,223 (or 7%) to £42,704.

After the planned increase from last year’s surplus, the Diocese Common Fund this year was £39,200 which included £2,645 contribution towards the costs of a curate. The PCC agreed that this amount would continue in 2023. Our calculated donation to charities rose to £6,100. The Unrestricted Fund ended the year at £118,939.

This year’s capital works included the installation of a fire alarm system in the Hall which was taken from reserves in the Designated Fund. At the end of the year these funds stood at Church Emergency (£22,634), Hall Roof (£30,000), residue of Defibrilator (£239), Stone House, which funds our Youth work and Curate expenses, (£272,615), Organ Repairs (£10,894), residue of Computer equipment (£13) and Church Fabric (£2,142). An additional fund, Energy Grant, was created from a grant from the Diocese to assist with extra heating costs (£3371). There was a loss in Designated accounts of £3,360 and a decrease in investment values of £28,120 which gave a total loss of £31,480. At the end of the year the Designated funds stood at £341,908.

The total of Restricted funds is now £4,230. Details of all funds can be seen in Note 11 on page 14.

It is assumed that in 2023 we will incur another drop in funds from giving if things continue as now and costs will continue to rise. A budget has therefore been set with a deficit of nearly £4,000.

At the end of the year the accounts show total funds of £465,077. The Balance Sheet on page 5 and Note 8 (Investments) on page 13 show where those funds are held with £200,686 on deposit with the Central Board of Finance (CBF) and investments (£245,791) representing longer term funds which are all invested in funds of the CBF.

PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL OF ST. PETER’S, MANEY

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31[ST] DECEMBER 2022

1. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTING POLICIES

The financial statements have been prepared under the Church Accounting Regulations 2006 in accordance with the current Statement of Recommended Practice, Accounting and Reporting by Charities and applicable accounting standard FRS102.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention except for investment assets, which are shown at fair valuation. The financial statements include all transactions, assets and liabilities for which the PCC is responsible in law. They do not include the accounts of church groups that owe their main affiliation to another body, nor those that are informal gatherings of church members.

Funds

Funds over which the PCC control is limited by statute or the terms of a trust deed, or which are restricted in their use have been defined as “restricted funds”. Funds which are controlled by the PCC and over which there are essentially no restrictions as to their use have been defined as “unrestricted funds”. Designated funds are unrestricted funds that have been set aside by the PCC for purposes designated by PCC policy. Such designations may be set aside from time to time according to policy decisions.

Restricted Funds comprise (a) income from endowments which is to be expended only on the restricted purposes intended by the donor, and (b) revenue donations or grants for a specific PCC activity intended by the donor.

Unrestricted Funds are income funds which are to be spent on the PCC’s general purposes.

Designated Funds are general funds set aside by the PCC for use in the future. Project funds are designated for particular projects for administration purposes only. Funds designated as invested in fixed assets for the PCC’s own use are abated in line with those assets’ annual depreciation charges in the SOFA. Designated funds remain unrestricted and the PCC will move any surplus to other general funds.

Funds Policy

The PCC have decided that, for 2022 onwards, the Unrestricted Funds are intended for short-term investment for income (up to £55,000) and 6 months operating expenditure (£50,000), and the remainder, surplus from legacies received in 2016, to be subject to PCC decisions for the time being.

In 2016 the PCC decided that the following will be designated: a buildings fund to allow items from the Quinquennial Report to be implemented together with emergency requirements (£140,000); a church fabric fund for items within the church (£5,000); a hall roof fund for the imminent repair (£30,000) and other small items (£1,100). The accounts show where spending has already taken place within these funds.

Income

All income is included in the Statement of Financial Activities when the PCC is legally entitled to them as income or capital respectively, ultimate receipt is probable and the amount to be recognised can be quantified with reasonable accuracy.

Planned giving, collections and similar donations are recognised when received. Tax refunds are recognised when the income to which they are related is received.

Grants received which are subject to pre conditions for entitlements or use specified by the donor which have not been met at the year end are included in creditors to be carried forward to the following year. Dividends and rents are accounted for when declared receivable, interest as and when accrued by the payer.

All income is accounted for gross.

Expenditure

Liabilities are recognised as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the PCC to pay out resources. Expenditure is included on an accruals basis under the following headings; all costs are allocated under a specific category:

Costs of raising funds

These are the costs associated with the PCC’s fundraising activities such as parish magazine printing, summer fete and Christmas bazaar event costs and church hall running costs.

Charitable expenditure

Charitable expenditure is analysed between ministry and mission expenditure. Ministry expenditure includes the direct costs of running the church such as the diocesan parish share, church building and service costs. The diocesan parish share expected to be paid over is accounted when due. Mission expenditure includes mission giving and donations, outreach in the community activities, messy church and associated staff costs.

Support costs consist of central management, administration and governance costs such as the independent examiner fees. These are costs which are directly attributable to a specific charitable activity.

Grants and donations payable are accounted for when authorized, when the award of the grant/donation has been specifically communicated to the recipient and when the PCC have agreed to pay the grant/donation without condition, or any condition attaching to the grant/donation is outside the control of the PCC. Grants/donations offered subject to certain conditions which have not been met at the year end are noted as a commitment, but not accrued as expenditure. Grants and donations are accounted for when paid over, or when awarded, if that award creates a binding or constructive obligation on the PCC.

Expenditure is accounted for gross.

Tangible Fixed Assets and Depreciation

Movable church furnishings held by the vicar and churchwardens on special trust for the PCC and which require a faculty for disposal are inalienable property, listed in the church’s inventory, which can be inspected (at any reasonable time). For anything acquired prior to 2000 there is insufficient cost information available and therefore such assets are not valued in the financial statements. Subsequently no individual item has cost more than £1,000 so all such expenditure has been written off when incurred.

Land and buildings owned by the Church are depreciated on a straight line basis over 25 years.

Equipment used within the Church premises is written off when the asset is acquired.

Financial Instruments

The PCC has elected to apply the provision of section 11 “Basic Financial Instruments” and section 12 “Other Financial Instruments” of FRS102 in full to all of its financial instruments.

Debtors which are receivable within one year and which do not constitute a financing transaction are initially measured at the transaction price. Debtors are subsequently measured at amortised cost being the transaction price less any amounts settled and any impairment losses.

Creditors payable within one year and which do not constitute a financing transaction are initially measured at the transaction price. Creditors are subsequently measured at amortised cost being the transaction price less any amounts settled.

The items in the Unrestricted fund represent the charities chosen by the PCC for the church's annual giving. This is determined from the formula of 10% of relevant net income. Relevant net income is calculated from total unrestricted general income, less apportionment, less VAT reclaimed, less grants for expenses, less legacies. In addition a proportion of Sunday coffee donations is given to Mothers’ Union.

PARISH REPORTS

Church Wardens’ Report - 2022

Churchwardens’ Report on the Church Fabric, Ornaments, Hall and Grounds

This year has seen the removal of the remaining restrictions on worship in the church and hiring of the hall following the COVID pandemic. It has been wonderful to welcome people back and to greet newcomers.

In November we received the annual visitation from the Area Dean, Rev’d Ann Richardson, when she inspected our processes including registers, the church log book and the inventory. We are pleased to say that the report was very favourable.

The Fire Alarm in the hall was installed and this completed the requirements from our last fire survey. Our Administrator (Angela) and Caretaker (Paul) now perform regular tests of the alarm and emergency lighting to ensure that they remain in working order.

Other repairs and enhancements carried out have included:

While that last repair was taking place we commissioned a status report on the West (Rose) Window in church. We have noticed minor debris appearing below that window and the report highlighted the need for some repairs and general cleaning. The PCC have approved that this should go ahead soon.

From the architect’s report into improvements in church for accessibility, two items have been specified and put out to tender. These will provide new external handrails at the vestry steps which will be in keeping with those at the north door and a new handrail at the steps from the vestry area to the chancel. A preferred supplier has been selected and the PCC have approved that this should go forward to the Diocese for faculty approval.

The Church Garden Party continues to meet one morning each month, tending the planters, Tower Walk and other areas and even doing some drain maintenance. We are most appreciative of their efforts as are the many passersby.

The Cleaning Team meets on the third Friday of every month with the objective of keeping the church clean and tidy at minimum cost. We are grateful to both Garden Party and Cleaning Team groups and would welcome new volunteers if anyone has a spare hour once a month.

The Building and Grounds committee meets every 2 months to review progress and set priorities. Minutes of meetings are sent to PCC.

A thorough check of the inventory and the condition of the contents of the church is underway and the result will be reported to the meeting.

Report on the Proceedings of the Parochial Church Council - 2022

The Council met 6 times during the year, with an average attendance of 80%. 2 winter meetings were held exclusively on Zoom, 1 held totally in person and 2 as a combination of in person and Zoom. There are currently 23 members, including 4 elected members of Deanery Synod, 2 elected members of Diocesan Synod, 1 co-opted member, Readers, Churchwardens and deputies.

The Council operates through sub committees covering five main areas, namely: Standing Committee Mission and Worship EcoManey Buildings and Grounds Social

As the pattern of worship had returned to normal following the Covid pandemic, the work of the Mission committee and Worship committee was combined back into a single group.

During the year, the Council considered and dealt with a range of issues relating to the church, hall and grounds, including :-

Group Council - 2022

The churches of St Peter’s, Holy Trinity and St Chad’s continue to work closely together as a Group. This year we have welcomed the return of pulpit swaps where the incumbents have moved around offering worship and preaching. The clergy meet each Wednesday morning to say Morning Prayer and to plan events and services.

Next year sees the retirement of Rev’d Canon John Routh after 17 years at Holy Trinity.

Churches Together in Central Sutton Coldfield - 2022

Members of Central Sutton Churches Together meet regular for prayer, planning and fellowship. The leaders of each church meet monthly for lunch, visiting churches on a rotational basis. Many leaders gather to pray and we support one another in multiple ways including collecting food the foodbanks. Together we have a ministry among those who sleep on our streets and the more vulnerable members of our community. At the Sutton Church Leaders lunch we have heard from Safe Families and Sian Nicholas (chaplain of Good Hope Hospital) and we have welcomed the leaders of new churches, including David Gibbs, pastor of Duke Street Church.

Aston and Sutton Coldfield Deanery Synod - 2022

There have been 3 meetings this year under the chairship of Area Dean, Rev’d Ann Richardson.

There is often a presentation at the meetings. This year Rev’d Canon Bamidele Sotonwa spoke about ‘From Lament to Action’, a report on Racism in the Church of England including recommendations which might assist the cultural changes needed. In a follow up meeting, it was felt that links between Aston and Sutton Coldfield churches is still at an early stage. There had been some shared activities but they have not been well supported.

In November, the meeting was held at St Michael’s Boldmere and there were a number of short snapshot presentations of initiatives at the church, some of which are new (Welcome Space), others longstanding (Lunch Club).

A Zoom meeting in February included a talk by Guy Donegan-Cross. It was about making disciples and highlighted new online resources including a course to replace the 3D course: The Way of the Cross.

The move towards developing Oversight areas has progressed through initial expressions of interest by the churches to a joint meeting of the PCCs of St Chad’s, Holy Trinity, Emmanuel and St Peter’s. This involved group discussions, sharing of current practice and getting to know each other a bit better!

Deanery Synod members at present: Rosemary Coombes, Sheena Heaton, John Heywood, Sheila Richmond, Sue Taylor, Ann Willis.

Diocesan Synod - 2022

Synod met three times during the year. As usual the summer meeting in July at Gas Street Church Centre was concerned mainly with the budget and associated financial matters. However, we also had the opportunity to say goodbye to Bishop David at his last Birmingham Synod. At the November Synod at St Columba’s, Banners Gate, it was necessary to elect a new Chair of Clergy following the death of Rev’d Canon Priscilla White. Rev’d Toby Crowe of St John’s Church, Sparkhill was elected.

Bishop Anne reported that the Vacancy in See process was now under way to find a new Bishop. Our Vicar Becky is one of the Vacancy in See committee. Bishop Anne also provided an update on Living in Love and Faith. There was an interesting presentation about the Church of England Birmingham’s engagement with further education in the city - an area for mission which is not always well explored.

At the March Synod at St Philip’s, Dorridge, Bishop Anne gave a thoughtful presidential briefing including about the General Synod debate on Living in Love and Faith which had taken place in February and about the prayers and blessings which would be available to same sex couples. She confirmed the Church of England would continue to believe that marriage would be a union between one man and one woman. There were many written questions in the documents to which answers had already been provided but, on the day, Bishop Anne allowed a number of supplementary questions. The discussion was calm, respectful and tolerant.

Two presentations followed. One by Canon Fred Rattley (Diocesan Director of Community Regeneration) on the cost of living crisis and the work of an organisation supported by the Diocese, called Thrive. He outlined the need for a generous and compassionate response to the cost of living crisis which offered people in need help in an appropriate and dignified way. He outlined the success of the warm spaces or warm welcome initiatives provided over the past winter months and how this could be translated into ongoing programmes.

The second presentation by Canon Dr Andrew Smith (Department of Theology at the University of Birmingham and the Bishop’s Director of Interfaith Relations) was an extremely interesting examination of the responses to the religion questions in the 2021 Census. Christianity remains the religious choice of 47% of UK citizens while 37% state they have no religion. 6.5% are Muslim, 1.7 % Hindu and all other faith groups less than 1% each.

The census also showed a very varied distribution of religious belief and ethnicity across our Diocese. While Birmingham and Sandwell have a higher proportion of Muslims and Sikhs than the national figures, Solihull has fewer Muslims but more Hindus and the North Warwickshire area of the Diocese has very little ethnic or religious diversity at all. Somewhat concerning was that the biggest area of growth in ‘religious’ belief shown by the census was in the area of Wicca and Paganism, mainly among teenage girls. Although worrying, this is perhaps an indication of a spiritual need among certain groups which the mainstream faith groups are not meeting.

Parish Administrator - 2022

2022 has been a busy year in the office. The hall has been in full use – during the week with regular bookings and at weekends with parties and social activities. Other church activities such as Cedar Group and Pebbles are back to their usual routine. The Christmas Fair ran full swing in November.

The highlight of the office year was installing a new printer/copier and the additional facilities have helped to speed up some of my tasks.

Invoicing is up-to-date and keeps me busy each month. I liaise with the Treasurer to discuss payments and receipts.

Paul, our caretaker, Paul, works hard to keep the hall and communal areas clean and tidy as well as welcoming parties and other ad-hoc bookings to the hall over the weekend. Several baptisms and weddings took place during the year and the hall was used for celebrations after some of these events.

I worked with Becky and Emily to produce notice sheets and orders of service along with any other documents that they required.

Angela Bagshaw – Parish Administrator

Mission, Life & Worship Committee - 2022

At the time of the last APCM this was operating in two groups. The Ministry group has concentrated on worship, especially the evolving arrangements for returning to more normal practices after the pandemic, while reviewing what we had learned and might keep. We planned for special services and events in different seasons of the church’s year, discussed the future of the newsletter and a possible magazine, and with the return of the choir, looked forward to a new Director of Music.

The Mission and Outreach group has discussed a variety of matters connected with our membership of Inclusive Church, especially access for people with disabilities and engaging with the local community. Possible fund-raising events were suggested, and an enquirers’ course.

In October it was decided to amalgamate the two groups into one committee again.

Children’s Ministry -2022

During 2022 lots of people helped to minister to our children. Sonia, Mo and Rosemary met with Rev’d Canon Becky and Rev’d Emily to plan events including Pebbles. Sonia, Katy, Mo, Barbara and Dickon helped to run Sunday Club and the Children’s Corner. During the year we were happy to welcome Lorna and Tenny to our Sunday Club team. This was greatly appreciated especially as Katy left us for university and Barbara stepped back from Sunday Club. We wish Katy every success in her studies.

Since she stepped back from children’s ministry, we had the sad news of Barbara’s death. This was a great shock to all of us. We shall always remember our dear friend and all her faithful, loving care for our children and for the adults working with them. On a personal note, I always appreciated her support and encouragement. Even after she stopped helping in Sunday Club, she would always pop into the hall before church to see if we were OK.

Our children continue to worship and learn in Sunday club each week and families make use of the Children’s corner.

Pebbles took place at Easter time when we celebrated the Resurrection. Rev’d Emily led us in a celebration of God’s creation in “Pebbles in the forest”. It was lovely to worship in the open air. Our Jubilee Pebbles did not happen but we were able to use some of the activities at the Jubilee picnic.

At Christmas time Rev’d Canon Becky led us in the Crib Service for younger children when we travelled around the Christmas Story. Older children were able to take part in the Nativity. Earlier in the year we tried to start a group for parents and babies/toddlers called Little Ripples. However, this did not prove successful so we will be giving this more thought.

There were 9 baptisms in 2022 and each child was given a teddy and a card. Parents were given a leaflet about baptism and information about Children’s ministry at St Peter’s. It is a great privilege to work with our young people and to see how they are growing and developing in their lives and in their faith.

7th Sutton Coldfield Scout Group – 2022

The last twelve months have been exciting as we have continued to deliver a programme full of fun, challenge and adventure for all three sections of the Group: Beavers (6 to 8 years old), Cubs (8 to10½) and Scouts (10½ to 14). We currently have 61 boys and girls in the Group and a very full waiting list. There are just eight adults delivering the programme across the three sections and we are grateful for the support from three young leaders each week. We would love to hear from any adults who would like to join us – it’s always a load of fun. All three of our sections have continued to learn ‘skills for life’ and it is fabulous to see the young people grow in confidence as they move through the Group.

Activities through the year have included camping, nights away, trips, hiking, climbing, fire lighting, sports, fun, games, community work and much more besides. We were also delighted to be involved with Sutton Coldfield Scout Gang Show once again after a 4-year gap since the last show. Four members of our Group were on stage and three more worked tirelessly backstage and in the technical crew. We are grateful for the support from those of you that came to watch us – we hope you enjoyed the show.

As an example of the values that we teach in Scouting our Cubs have recently organised and run a series of community projects. This has seen them reduce food waste in their own homes, start a book swap club at Cubs, look at ways to support those living alone, and take on personal challenges to raise money for local foodbanks. The picture shows the Cubs with the food we purchased for the Foodbank.

I am delighted that we have continued to see our young people gain the top awards in their sections and we have presented 9 Chief Scout Bronze Awards, 5 Chief Scout Silver awards and 4 of the very prestigious Chief Scout Gold Awards over the last twelve months. Each of these awards requires a lot of hard work, enthusiasm and commitment from our young people – they are a credit to themselves and deserve all the plaudits they receive. Of course – all of this happens because our volunteer Leaders are so generous with their time and energy on a very regular basis. My thanks goes to Julie Ellis (no relation), Eileen Lyndon, Josh Holmes, Dave Archer, Lorna Scully, Matt Brain and Matthew Ellis (also no relation to me … but related to Julie) for everything they do. I am also grateful to Darrell Fleming and Tim Ellis (related) for the ‘behind the scenes’ support and to our team of occasional helpers who are always happy to stand by our side when asked. We are looking forward to another fun Scouting year ahead and remain grateful for the support and kind words from all at St Peter’s.

Music at Maney - 2022

It has been a great pleasure to take over as Director of Music at St. Peter’s from September. There have been several notable choral Services that have taken place thus far in the church year: the Advent Carol Service, Nine Lessons and Carols, and the introduction of an Evensong in February. A particular highlight was the Nine Lessons and Carols, sung largely by our choir alone. Regular Wednesday evening rehearsals continue to take place.

In addition, it is pleasing that the choir have begun to contribute to services monthly through the introduction of a responsorial psalm, and an anthem on different weeks, duly receiving positive feedback from the congregation. The choir have been stretched and challenged, learning works by Tallis, Farrant, and Ford. This repertoire required independence from all four component parts of the choir. During March several of the choir spontaneously opened a Eucharist with a rendition of If ye love me , in the form of an introit. The choir are set to open Easter Day’s Service with an introit too, O sons and daughters by Walford Davies

Going forward, I hope that the music department at St. Peter’s shall continue to develop in several ways. More choristers are needed to compensate for recently lost members, and to grow the choir. A promotional flyer, therefore, has been put together and sent to print, ready for dissemination after Easter. It is expected that at least two evensongs shall take place over the summer term. I am considering the introduction of occasional congregational rehearsals, giving the congregation further familiarity with the sung elements of the Eucharistic liturgy.

The ensuing year has every reason to be a successful one for the music at St. Peter’s, and the positive ‘can-do’ attitude of the choir very much paves the way for this.

Care Team – 2022

The Care Team aims to show the love and care of God with those in our church and community who cannot, for whatever reason, attend church. We offer support through visits, phone calls, texts, emails, letters, cards and practical help where this is possible.

There were 3 meetings this year where members of the Care Team reviewed ongoing needs of those we contact. Our current collective contact is with some 25 members of the congregation. Every member of the team has completed and updated the necessary Safeguarding and DBS Checks.

Home Communions continue to be taken out when and where requested and a rota has been devised of those willing to assist with the distribution of this at home.

The Care Team gratefully recognises the care shown by many of the congregation to others; please do let us know of anyone who is unwell or in need of assistance so we can be in touch if this is desired.

Alongside Rev’d Canon Becky and Rev’d Emily Robottom-Scott, the team comprises: Anne Ball, Rosemary Coombes, Mo Dening, Elena Grant, David Griffiths, Sheila Richmond, Christine White, Hazel Hallas and Ann Willis.

Cedar Group – 2022

The Cedar Group gathers on the first and third Tuesdays of the month in the Hall between 2- 4pm. It aims to provide an opportunity for those, perhaps living alone, who like company, a chat, tea, cake and a gentle quiz.

Transport to and from the group can be an issue but we continue to explore taxis etc.

Our small fortnightly donation (currently £1) covers the costs of refreshments and cards. This year we were able to make a good contribution to the work at Potters Village, inspired as we were by the visit of Dr Nicci Maxwell.

The group continues to grow in numbers and new members are always welcome.

Social Committee - 2022

There have been a few changes to the committee during 2022. At the beginning of the year the committee was composed of Janet Harley, Sonia Clucas, Frances Heywood, Sue Griffiths, Fiona Baker and Simon Baker. During the year Frances took a few months out but we are pleased that she has decided to return. Also, we are happy to welcome Jane Jenner and Glenys Sperring to our team. Recently, Fiona and Simon have stepped back from the committee for a while. We thank them for all their wonderful input and hope they will be able to help with some events in the future.

In 2022 we were delighted to be able to run many social events as well as supporting church activities. As a trial event after so long without social gatherings, we held a Fish and Chip Supper in February. This was enjoyed by all and Simon led us in an amusing quiz about fish and chips. So, we were off and running!

Rev’d Emily led us in organising a Breakfast and coffee morning in aid of Christian Aid. The breakfast was enjoyed by many. The coffee morning was good but numbers were low. So, we are reconsidering the timing and advertising for the 2023 coffee morning.

Frances held a Lent Lunch in her home to raise funds for Church Army.

We invited friends and neighbours to join us for a picnic in the church grounds to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. People brought their own picnic but drinks and ice creams were sold. There were also games and crafts available for children and even a visiting corgi!

At our Bring and Share Patronal Lunch we also celebrated Rev’d Emily’s ordination to the priesthood. As usual it was a very happy time with lots of delicious food.

Some members of the committee served teas and coffees at the church open day in September. This was part of Sutton Heritage week.

The Harvest Lunch was also Bring and Share with hot as well as cold dishes. Another delicious spread to celebrate God’s bounty!

At last, we were able to officially welcome our “new” vicar, Rev’d Canon Becky. After the service, we celebrated with tea and cakes and welcomed friends from our Group Churches.

The Christmas lunch at the Toby Carvery in Sutton Park was a very happy occasion. Thanks to Janet for organising this. After the Christmas Carol Service we served mince pies and mulled wine.

It is good to be back to our usual busy social whirl!

Eco Maney - 2022

The big news this year is that St Peter’s gained the Gold Eco Church Award. We were the first parish in Birmingham Diocese to achieve this status, but it brings responsibility with it. We are now looked to by other parishes for advice, guidance and support. We are making presentations at parish meetings, deaneries and online for the diocese.

We continue with monthly gardening; and have revived the annual litter-pick with the Cubs & Scouts.

The Fair Trade stall now offers eco products as well as the traditional tea, coffee, cards etcetera.

We produce material for Lent and Creationtide.

Church Mission Society - 2022

We have received regular, and frequent, letters from Dr Nicci Maxwell in Uganda and also from our previous "link", John and Gillian Robinson in Thailand. All seem to be thriving (although Nicci is still suffering from the after effects of Covid) and both Potter's Village and the Place of Grace are very busy and obviously filling a great need in their respective communities. For security reasons we cannot display all their news (particularly from Bangkok) but all members of the congregation are welcome to borrow them from me – please do ask. And, if you are a knitter, very small baby clothes for new borns are always welcome. Do keep ALL our partners in your prayers, please.

Church Army Report – 2022

The Church Army thanks St Peter’s Church, Maney, for its continued kindness and support.

After a hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, members of the church and friends sang carols at Tesco New Oscott just before Christmas in December 2022. It was well received by Tesco staff and their customers, who generously gave £227 despite the cost of living crisis. Some favourite carols received enthusiastic applause!

The £227 raised went towards the Church Army’s Marylebone Project, which provides support to women who are particularly vulnerable to homelessness, destitution, and who are in need of a safe space.

Christian Aid – 2022

It was decided by the Parochial Church Council in January 2022 to stop door to door collections and that the planning of events for Christian Aid would fall under the remit of the Mission Committee.

The Social Committee then organised and hosted a ‘Big Brekkie’ one Sunday morning before church and a coffee morning with lots of lovely cake donations from our church members – thank you! Both the breakfast and the coffee morning were held during Christian Aid Week. The breakfast, in particular, was a huge success and greatly enjoyed by those who came. In addition to those two events, a collection was taken in church on the Sunday of Christian Aid Week. The total sum collected for all of these events was £1415. We offer our heartfelt thanks to all who donated their time and baked for our events, especially, the Social Committee.

Malawi Report – 2022

In late April 2022, an appeal for goods for the Birmingham Malawi container was raised. This was the first time in a number of years that the church had actively sent goods to Malawi. The Church worked closely with St Michael’s in Boldmere to parcel up items that had been requested and ensure they were distributed across the country to contacts and projects who would benefit from the donated goods.

An appeal for help to cover the shipping costs was generously supported and we were able to cover our allocated fees and retain c£300 for 2023’s container costs.

On Wednesday 19[th] October 2022, the Birmingham container was offloaded in Lilongwe and the goods distributed. One of the three longtime mission partners that the Naomi has worked with, Jesman Seva, Head of Bishop Mtekateka Secondary School, sent a letter of thanks and reminded us all that that the significance of the goods that were sent measures far beyond the monetary value associated to it, although it should be noted that the value of the items sent on the container is equivalent to millions of Malawi kwachas.

The date for the 2023 container has been set for early June, once again and 35 square cubic feet have been reserved.
