**Report from the Chairman**

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

## **Honourable Members of Shahjalal Mosque & Islamic Centre,**

I would like to welcome you to the Shahjalal Mosque & Islamic Centre’s Annual General Meeting 2024. First of all, I thank Allah the almighty for granting us the opportunity to serve His house. I am very grateful to you for electing my committee and me for the year 2023-2025.

I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of my Committee, to express our sincere condolences. This year, we have lost many elders, brothers, and sisters from our community. We also remember those who passed away during the COVID period. It was a dark time, and many of us lost our loved ones. May Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala forgive their shortcomings, grant them a high rank in Jannah, and resurrect them in the company of their chosen people. Ameen.

As you may be aware, the election that was supposed to happen in 2018 was postponed due to legal proceedings initiated by some members regarding the membership application process that took place in the summer of 2018. A total of 608 memberships were in question. Thanks to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala, the court ruled in favour of these 608 members.

Despite these challenges, I have endeavoured to reunite our community. After calling a public meeting to gather the views of our members, we were able to hold an election in June 2023. You have elected me and my new committee to manage the affairs of the Mosque for another term. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity to continue serving Shahjalal Mosque and Islamic Centre.

I will now report to you of the work the Committee have either completed or continuously been engaged with.

## **Open Door Policy**

Shahjalal Mosque doors are open from Zuhur until Isha, providing a welcoming space for the community throughout the afternoon and evening. This extended accessibility allows individuals the flexibility to come and pray or read the Quran at their convenience. Whether someone needs a quiet moment for personal reflection, wishes to join in congregational prayers, or simply seeks a serene environment to recite the Quran, Shahjalal Mosque offers a supportive and peaceful setting. This open-door policy ensures that everyone, regardless of their schedule, has the opportunity to connect with their faith and community.

## **Financial State**

Financially, I am pleased to report that our Mosque’s finances are healthy, thanks to the generous donations from our community members. Your contributions have enabled us to maintain our services and embark on new projects for the benefit of all. The state of finances is available in this report for your consideration.

## **Gift Aid Registration**

I am delighted to share that Shahjalal Mosque & Islamic Centre is now registered for Gift Aid. This wonderful opportunity allows us to claim an additional 25% from HMRC on your donations, at no extra cost to you. I would like to extend special thanks to our Joint-Secretary, Afique Miah, for his relentless efforts in getting Shahjalal Mosque registered. His hard work has already enabled us to claim £1731.00 from Gift Aid in this financial period.

Annual Report 2023 - 2024 | 8

## **Festivals**

All the major festivals of the Islamic Calendar are celebrated in our Mosque. Eid-e-Meeladun Nabi (Prophet’s (PBUH) Birthday), Lailatul Baraat (15th Night of Sha’ban), Lailatul Qadr, Lailatul Mi’raj and other Islamic days are observed with great honour, respect and importance. We organise talks, Zikr, visiting Muslim graveyards.

## **Ramadan Facilities**

This year, we had the privilege of arranging for Hafiz Mohamed Sallani from France to lead the Taraweeh prayers, alongside our second Imam, Hafiz Mohammed Jamal Hussain, and the students of Shahjalal Mosque. Alhamdulillah, their beautiful recitation of the Holy Quran surely touched all of us deeply.

Shahjalal Mosque provided Iftar for those attending our Mosque to break their fast together. Each day, we host over 200 people for Iftar, and Alhamdulillah, every Iftar is sponsored by individuals and organisations within our community. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who work tirelessly in the kitchen to prepare the food throughout the blessed month of Ramadan.

I would like to express special thanks to our Organising Secretary, Ishtiaq Ahmed, and his team for their diligent work throughout the month of Ramadhan to ensure everything ran smoothly.

I want to acknowledge and appreciate the volunteers who worked tirelessly in the kitchen throughout Ramadan, as well as those who assisted in serving Iftar meals. Your selfless service exemplifies the spirit of unity and generosity that defines our Mosque.

## **Education Facilities**

The committee is actively working to improve our Mosque facilities and expand activities for our youth. We have appointed two dedicated female teachers for the girls and established an Education Subcommittee to monitor and enhance educational standards within the Mosque. This initiative underscores our commitment to nurturing the next generation of youngsters.

I am proud to report that our regular activities such as Hifz classes, Maktab classes, and adult Qur’an classes are running smoothly and are well attended. We have revised our Maktab timetable so that classes now run from Monday to Friday. This adjustment ensures that children have their weekends free, allowing them time for mental refreshment and relaxation. This change aims to strike a balance between academic learning and personal well-being.

## **Funeral Service**

The Shahjalal Mosque Funeral Service has been running successfully, and we now have one hearse and an ambulance. I am pleased to inform you that our funeral service is a member of the National Burial Council (NBC). The NBC is a national organisation representing the needs of Muslim bereavement services across the UK. Our team assists bereaved families with all aspects of the burial process, from paperwork to the burial itself.

## **Funeral Saving Plan**

Many members of our community, particularly the elderly, worry about saving for their own funeral and burial costs. This concern arises either because they do not have close family to manage the arrangements or because they do not want to burden their families with these expenses.

We are in the process of introducing a Funeral Saving Plan to help those concerned set aside funds for these costs. Inshallah, this plan will commence very soon, and we will inform the community about this facility.

Annual Report 2023 - 2024 | 9

## **Proposed Relocation of Mortuary Room**

As you are all aware, the current location of the mortuary room poses significant inconvenience. The process of moving a body through the mosque requires everyone to stand up and give way, which can be disruptive and inconvenient. One of our long-term goals has been to relocate the mortuary room to a more convenient location. Alhamdulliah, I am pleased to inform you that the planning for the proposed mortuary room at the front of the mosque has been granted by Manchester City Council. This new location will be more convenient for several reasons, Ease of access, the body can be washed and viewed in the new mortuary room. Improved Flow: A doorway will be opened in the mimbar area to allow for the Janazah to be performed seamlessly, reflecting our commitment to serving you better. I ask all members to consider this proposal and approve it in today’s agenda.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our Imam’s, Maulana Khairul Huda Khan, and Hafiz Mohammed Jamal Hussain, as well as our Hifz tutors; Hafiz Mawlana Islam Uddin, Hafiz Mawlana Nazmul Islam and Maktab Tutors; Marham Bham and Tasnia Bokht. Their dedicated efforts in guiding and educating our community are invaluable in fostering enlightenment and spiritual growth at Shahjalal Mosque.

I also would like to give special thanks to Hossain Moorehead Ltd. Our accountant auditor, for their continuous support to maintain and audit the Mosque accounts.

I also want to express my gratitude to the members of my committee for their hard work and dedication in serving the Mosque selflessly. Together, we strive to meet the needs of our community and uphold the values of our faith.

A special thank you goes out to every member of our community who supports the Mosque through donations or volunteering. Your contributions make a significant difference in the life of our Mosque and our community.

I wish to extend my deepest appreciation to the elders of our community. Their steadfast commitment and relentless efforts have been instrumental in shaping the prosperity and development of our Mosque. Serving as the bedrock of both our Mosque and community, their wisdom and guidance serve as a continual source of inspiration for us all.

In conclusion, I look forward to continuing our journey together, strengthening our Mosque, and serving our community with dedication and excellence.

On behalf of the Committee, I once again take the opportunity to thank every one of you for giving us the opportunity to serve the house of Allah and the community.

With this note, I submit the Annual Report with a full appraisal of our activities by our General Secretary and the state of finances by the Treasurer for your considerations and approval.

## Thanking you

## **Report from the General Secretary**

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

## **Honourable Members of Shahjalal Mosque & Islamic Centre,**

Welcome to the Shahjalal Mosque & Islamic Centre’s Annual General Meeting 2024. Firstly, I thank Allah the Almighty for granting us the opportunity to serve His house. I am deeply grateful to all of you for electing me as the General Secretary for the term 2023-2025.

On behalf of the Committee, I extend our deepest condolences. This year, we have sadly witnessed the passing of many beloved members of our community. May Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala forgive their shortcomings, grant them the highest ranks in Jannah. Ameen.

Our Mosque serves as a centre for daily prayers and activities associated with our faith. Since the new committee was elected in June 2023, we have offered a range of religious and social activities. I will now report on the activities undertaken by Shahjalal Mosque over the past year and those that are ongoing.

## **Maktab Class**

Our Mosque offers after-school classes to teach basic Islamic knowledge and Qur’an recitation with Tajweed. We have appointed qualified female teachers for the girls and male teachers for the boys. Currently, over 70 children are enrolled in our evening classes. To enhance our educational program, we have adopted a new syllabus and textbooks.

## **Hifz Class**

Memorization of the Quran is a crucial aspect of religious education and training. We have taken the initiative to enhance

our Hifz classes by appointing two new teachers, with over 30 students currently enrolled. Alhamdulillah, our students are thriving, and we hope to see some of them graduate as Hafiz from our Mosque very soon, Inshallah.

## **Monthly Youth Classes**

We have initiated a monthly Fiqh class for our youth, delivered in English. Alhamdulillah, many young brothers and sisters have attended these classes and gained valuable knowledge of the Deen.

## **Adult Qur’an Classes**

We continue to offer Qur’an and Tajweed classes for adults, with separate sessions for men and women taught

by qualified male and female teachers. Alhamdulillah, about 15 individuals attend these classes regularly to improve their recitation of the Qur’an with Tajweed. We greatly appreciate and thank the teachers who generously volunteer their time and effort.

## **Monthly Halaqah**

We have launched a monthly Halaqah for our community delivered in Bangla. Our Imam, along with guest scholars, provides teachings from the Quran, Hadith, Tafseer, and Fiqh. Everyone has the opportunity for Q&A to discuss and learn essential rulings for daily life. Alhamdulillah, we have received very positive feedback from attendees regarding these classes.

Annual Report 2023 - 2024 | 11

## **Weekly Zikr Mahfil & Khatme Khajegan**

Every Monday evening, we gather for Dhikr (remembrance of Allah), followed by Mawlid, Du’a, and food. Additionally, every Thursday evening, we conduct Khatme Khajegan, a special recitation of selected Surahs of the Qur’an and the beautiful names of Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala, followed by Mawlid, Du’a, and food. We extend our gratitude to those who sponsor the meals.

## **Darul Qirat Course in Summer Holiday**

During the summer holidays, we host a four week special Qur’an training course known as Darul Qirat. This intensive course spans six years, culminating in a qualification as a ‘Qari’. Last year, we successfully conducted the summer Darul Qirat course with over 120 students participating. Alhamdulillah, we are proud to announce that 7 students graduated as Qari from this course.

## **Award Ceremony**

We recently hosted an award ceremony to celebrate the achievements of our students. Parents, caregivers, and members of the community were invited to join us in congratulating our students on their successes. During the ceremony, students who achieved the highest marks in their exams received trophies, while all participants were awarded medals and certificates. Over the years, we have been privileged to welcome esteemed guests from across the UK to our ceremony. This event serves as an opportunity for our students to feel proud of their accomplishments and dedication.

## **Islamic Events**

Our Mosque commemorates all major festivals of the Islamic Calendar with great reverence and significance. Events such as Eid-e-Meeladun Nabi (Prophet’s (PBUH) Birthday), Lailatul Baraat (15[th] Night of Sha’ban), Lailatul Qadr, Lailatul Mi’raj, and other Islamic occasions are observed in a spirit of honour and respect. During these gatherings, we organise several activities including talks, Zikr (remembrance of Allah), visits to Muslim graveyards, and communal meals for everyone present. Last year, we had the privilege of hosting esteemed scholars such as Hadhrat Maulana Husamuddin Chowdhury Fultali, Shaikhul Hadith Hadhrat Allamah Hafiz Abdul Jalil, Shaykh Maulana Badruzzaman Riad, and many other local scholars.

## **Welcoming School Visits**

Each year, we warmly welcome children from schools across Manchester and beyond to visit our Mosque. These visits aim to enrich their understanding of Islam and provide insights into the Mosque’s significance. Students enjoy guided tours of the Mosque and engaging PowerPoint presentations by our Imam. Additionally, we offer light refreshments and fun activities to enhance their experience.

Annual Report 2023 - 2024 | 12

## **Hajj Seminar 2024**

Alhamdulillah, we hosted a highly successful Hajj Seminar, which saw an enthusiastic turnout of approximately 100 brothers and sisters. The seminar was a pivotal opportunity for those preparing for Hajj, providing them with essential guidance and knowledge. Participants were warmly welcomed and engaged in informative sessions led by knowledgeable speakers, covering various aspects of the Hajj pilgrimage.

To enhance their preparations, each attendee received thoughtfully prepared gift bags containing essential items, along with complimentary books to further enrich their understanding. The evening concluded with a communal dinner, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie among the participants as they shared their excitement and preparations for the blessed journey ahead.

The seminar not only served as a practical guide but also as a spiritual gathering, reinforcing the significance of Hajj and nurturing a deeper connection to this pillar of Islam. Attendees left inspired and better equipped for their upcoming pilgrimage, grateful for the support and community spirit that defined the event.

## **Islamic Lectures**

In addition to our regular talks and classes, we have organised special lectures aimed at educating our community on various aspects of life. Recently, we hosted a talk titled “Value of Parents & Importance of Family in Islam”. The session, conducted in both Bangla and English, featured enlightening presentations by Hadrat Maulana Hafiz Helal Uddin and Shaykh Mohammed Rubel Miah, who beautifully highlighted the significance of parents and the pivotal role of family in Islam.

Another insightful lecture titled “The Legacy of Prophet Ibrahim (A)” was organized, where our Imam, Maulana Khairul Huda Khan, and Hifz teacher, Hafiz Maulana Islam Uddin, shared the inspiring story of Prophet Ibrahim (A) and elucidated the profound lessons derived from his life.

## **Multi-Faith Communal Iftar**

We invited individuals of diverse faiths and backgrounds to join our annual communal Iftar event, “Taste Ramadan”. More than 450 guests participated in guided mosque tours, listened to Quran recitations, gained insights into aspects of Islam through discussions, and engaged in Q&A sessions. The evening culminated with the breaking of the fast, featuring delicious traditional cuisine and takeaway goody bags for all attendees.

## **Ramadan Iftar Facilities**

Ramadan is a time of togetherness and spiritual reflection, where Muslims come together to strengthen their faith, engage in communal worship, and share in the blessings of fasting.

At Shahjalal Mosque, we arrange Iftar for those attending our Mosque to break their fast together. This year, we welcomed over 200 people daily for Iftar. Alhamdulillah, all the Iftar meals have been generously sponsored by individuals and organisations. We extend our heartfelt thanks to those who hard work in the kitchen to prepare the meals and to the volunteers who helped serve Iftar throughout Ramadan.

Annual Report 2023 - 2024 | 13

## **Funeral Service**

Our Mosque offers a comprehensive funeral service in accordance with Islamic teachings. We assist the bereaved family by managing all aspects of the burial process, alleviating their burdens during a difficult time. It is our practice to ensure that burials are conducted promptly, as required by our religion. We extend our sincere gratitude to our team of volunteers, both brothers and sisters, for their invaluable assistance in washing, shrouding, and burying the deceased with utmost respect and dignity.

In our commitment to improving our facilities, we have recently upgraded our equipment and acquired a hoist specifically designed to aid in lifting deceased bodies. This enhancement is especially beneficial for female volunteers involved in the washing process.

## **Marriage/Nikaah Services (Islamic Nikaah & Civil Marriage)**

Our Mosque offers a venue for both Islamic Nikaah (marriage) ceremonies and civil marriages. Since June 2023, we have facilitated 39 marriages, providing Muslim couples with a suitable and respectful environment to solemnize their unions. Alhamdulillah, we are honoured to serve our community in this important aspect of their lives.

In my report, I have emphasised some of the key activities we provide. Continuously collaborating with our Imams and community, we strive to offer a diverse array of Islamic programs and initiatives aimed at enriching the spiritual growth of our congregation. These efforts are particularly focused on providing avenues for both our community members and youth to deepen their understanding of Islamic teachings and values within the nurturing environment of our Mosque.

I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the members of the Executive Committee for their invaluable support and assistance in enabling me to fulfil my responsibilities as General Secretary.

In addition, I extend my sincere appreciation to our respected Imams, Mawlana Khairul Huda Khan and Hafiz Muhammad Jamal Hussain, for their tireless efforts in advancing the welfare and growth of our Mosque. I am equally grateful to our dedicated Hifz teachers, Hafiz Mawlana Islam Uddin and Hafiz Mawlana Nazmul Islam, as well as our committed Maktab Tutors, Marham Bham and Tasnia Bokht, for their diligent service in nurturing the spiritual education of our community’s youth.

I also want to acknowledge and thank the local youth for their enthusiastic contributions towards enhancing our Mosque. Their active participation and voluntary efforts, especially during times of need like Covid, reflect their deep commitment to the well-being of our community.

Furthermore, I express my utmost gratitude to the elders of our community. Their unwavering dedication and tireless efforts have played a pivotal role in shaping the success and growth of our Mosque. They serve as the cornerstone of our Mosque and community, and their wisdom and guidance continue to inspire us all.

Once again, I extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you for affording us the privilege to serve the House of Allah and our beloved community. May Allah accept all our efforts and contributions for His house. Ameen.

Thanking you

Our main sources of income include donations and contributions, rental income from Osborne House, fees from the Marriage Service, revenue from Funeral Services, and earnings from Hifz and Maktab classes.

Our accounts have maintained a healthy balance throughout the year, thanks to the consistent income and prudent financial management. Looking ahead, I am optimistic about the future financial prospects of our Mosque. One significant development is that we have now registered for Gift Aid. This registration will enable us to claim an additional 25% of every eligible donation from HMRC, significantly boosting our revenue in the coming year.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the Chairman and the committee members for their unwavering support and guidance in maintaining the accounts. Their collaboration has been invaluable in ensuring the financial stability of our Mosque.

A special thanks goes to our auditor, Hossain Moorehead Ltd., for their continuous support in maintaining and auditing our accounts. Their expertise and diligence have been crucial in ensuring accuracy and transparency in our financial records.

With this note, I present the accounts for 2023-2024 to the house for your scrutiny, consideration and approval. I am confident that with our collective efforts, we will continue to maintain and enhance the financial health of Shahjalal Mosque, ensuring it remains a cornerstone of support and service for our community.

Thanking you

Abdur Rashid Treasurer

Annual Report 2023 - 2024127

**SHAHJALAL MOSQUE & ISLAMIC CENTRE**

In the year 1967 the Muslim community of Bangladeshi origin (then East Pakistan) living in Manchester and adjoining towns decided to establish a Mosque of their own from donations and contributions from members of its own community. Late Messrs. Muhammad Abdul Matin Chowdhury, Bosharat Ali, Syed Abdul Hannan and Makaddus Bakht were elected as holding trustees and given the task of completing the purchase of the building at 1A Eileen Grove, Rusholme, Manchester, previously owned by Maclaren Public Institute. Soon afterwards the Mosque started functioning in the said premises.

At a public meeting in May 1975, it was decided to call the building “Shahjalal Mosque and Islamic Centre” and also to form a committee to run the organisation. In the following week, at a meeting of the general body of membership of the Mosque, a committee was formed to frame a constitution for the Mosque for its smooth running and maintenance, and for the fulfillment of the aims and objectives of the organisation as outlined in 1967.

To cater for the changing of the community, to update certain provisions and to clarify ambiguity of some of the clauses, it was felt that the constitution needed large-scale modifications. At the Annual General Meeting of 1985 it was decided to form an ad hoc committee to write a new constitution. Draft for this constitution was presented to the Executive Committee in October 1986, which was followed by consultations and discussions amongst ordinary members of the Mosque and members of the Executive Committee, resulting in alteration and modifications of the original draft. The final draft was presented to the members in the Annual General Meeting of 25[th] January 1987, and it was approved after further minor modifications.

## **Aims & Objectives**

- To advance the Islamic faith of the Bangladeshi Muslim inhabitants in the area of benefit (to include Manchester, Salford and the boroughs of Bolton, Bury, Macclesfield, Stockport, Trafford, Warrington and Wigan) through prayer, worship, Islamic teachings and religious services.

- To advance education and provide facilities in the interests of social awareness, social welfare and leisure-time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said

- inhabitants.

- To establish, or secure the establishment of a Mosque and Islamic Centre and to maintain and manage the same in furtherance of these objects.
