All Saints N20 Report and Accounts for year ending 31st December 2020 Aim and purposes The Parochial Church Council of All Salnts. Friern Barnet (the °PCry) co- Dperates With the clergy based in the parish, in promoting public worshlpi teaching, evangeli5rn and pastoral WO in the ecclesiastical parish of All Saints, Friern Barnet, and in supporting other charities in the UK and overseas. The PCC is also responsible for the maintenance and operatlon of All Salnts, church hall. Objectives and activities The PCC Is commltted to enabllng as many people as posslble to worshlp at our church and to become part of our parish community at All Saints,. Our servlces and worshlp put falth Into practice through prayer and scripture, music and sacrament. When plannlng Its activltles for the year the PCC and the incumbent considered the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit and, in partlcular, the guldance on charltles for the advancement of religion. The PCC tries to enable people to live out their faith as part of our parish community through: worship and prayer, teaching the gospel. and developing thelr knowledge and trust in Jesus the provision of pastoral care ft)r those living in the parish missionary and outreach work. All of this can be summarised by the PCC consideringi in everything it does, the core tenets of its Mission Action Plan: Reaching out Making disciples
PCC of All Saints, Friern Barnet 2020 Annual Report and Financial Statements Growing in God. To facilitate and sUPPOrt thi5 work it is important that the PCC maintains the fabric of All Saints, Church and the church hall. Achievements and performance Worshlp and prayer The year 2020 was a year quite unlike anything seen in the histrjry of All Saints.. The year began quite normallyi With our gUlar services, all open beyond All Saints, parishioners to the wider community, being: a simple, reflective weekly Sunday morning Eucharist at 8am according to the Book of Common Prayer a weekly Sunday morning Eucharist at 10am according to Common Worship designed for a broad range of people, including families, with music and, during temi time. junior church a Eucharist one momlng a week during school term time a weekly -Little Saints" Eucharist followed by a parent and toddler group in the church hall, recognising and serving the large number of young• often single parent, families in our partsh a monthly healing service on Sunday evening. Then everything changed. First, our vicar, the Revd Gregory Platten annoUnd on Sunday 8 March that he would be leaving in June to become the Canon Chancellor of Lichfield Cathedral. While delighted that his abilitie5 were being recognised, we were saddened to be loslng such a wonderful and much-loved parish priest, as well a5 his family Gillian, Max and Austen. all of whom had found e place in the hearts of the parish. Then, barely a week later, in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, public services were banned. All our plans - for Super Sundays, ft)r Easter, for confinnation. even our fowell to Fr Gregory and his family - were discarded and our worship for the rest of the year was driven by reaction to the various phases of the pandemic.
PCC of All Saints, Friern Barnet 2020 Annual Report and Financial Statements Initially it seemed that our services could have be broadcast live from church without a congregation (Nick Healy helped set up the video in the first week). But after just one Sunday servi, churches were closed by the government, and our service5 had to be broadcast from the vicarage, at first hesltantly but as we became more skilled, with growing confidence. Fr Gregory and Fr Harry began to broadcast morning and evening prayer dailyi and this quickly gathered a small but very loyal congregation, bringing much needed sustenance and social activity to those taking part. This has become a regular part of our spiritual life, continuing throughout the year. From the middle of June we began to open for private prayer and to accept donations to St Barnabas's Foodbank, and finallyi in mid-july after three and a half month5 we were able to reopen for Ma55 on Sundays ~ but it was very different to what had gone before - every other pew closed to enforce social distancingi ma5k5, hand sanitizer, and a temporary altar at the top of the chan1 steps. We continued to broadcast our services live fmm church for those who were shielding or felt unable attending large gatherings. Our thanks must go to Julian Olver, who led and did much of the organising for this re-opening. We were missing the presence of children in these services, so In the autumn we tentatively recommenced Junior Church led by Lucy Meredith, only to have church services banned again by the second national lockdown only two weeks later. This meant Remembrance Sundayi nonTtally a very speclal Sunday in All Saints, year, being online, with the wreath laying being filmed and broadcast live on a telephone by Yvonne Olver. December Saw us back in church, but with a heavy heart, faced with rising infection rates locally, we declded to move our Christmas services online, brnadcast rrom church. When we first began to broadcast services, we used Facebook live, then YouTube until quickly settling on Zoom, which allowed for a live service with interaction between those taking part, allowing readings from and prayers led by members of the congregation, and different preachers, while at the same time recording the service to YouTube to allow it to be watched at different times. When we moved back into church, we continued to broadcast our services for those who were uncomfortable in attending large gatherings.
PCC of All Saints, Friern Barnet 2020 Annual Report and Financial Statements In the latter half of the year, we established a tech team to manage the broadcast of services, led by our churchwarden, Julian Olver and asslsted by Linda Folan and David Lane. Throughout the perfod of the pandemic, when not worshipping in church, we have always broadcast a service live each Sunday as well as weekday moming and evenlng prayer. This has only been possible thanks to the enormous commitment of our parish priests, Fr Gre90ry before he left for Lichfield, and particularly Fr Hary since then, assisted when he was available by Fr David. The parish is so grateful to them. Deanery Synod Fr Gregory had served as the Area Dean of Central Barnet for some time, and towards the end of his time at All Saints, had led the amalgamation of Central Barnet and West Bamet Deanerfes Into one Barnet Deaneryi to better match the London 8orough of Barnet; and one member of the PCC sat on the deanery synod, which provided the PCC wlth an important Ilnk between the parlsh and the wlder structures of the church. Chlldren and Young Peopl• Durfng tern) tlme we run "Llttle Salnts" a speclal mass for pre-school children and thelr carers followed by a playgroup in the hall, open to the wider communlty, and whlch Is often oversubscribed. Junior Church was growing strongly when the pandemic struck. Since then we have been unable to provlde many opportunities for our young people, and It will be a priority when the pandemic begins to loosen. In late 2019learty 2020 the initiative was taken to develop an offering for the local youngsters of the parish. Rather unexpectedly from humble beginnings the popularity of the club exceeded our expectstions, and although only three sessions held before Covid-19 put paid to our plans, we were getting traction. A dedlcated team of PCC mernbers brought a raft of Ideas and appropriate planning to each 5e5sion. Each event was crafted to include a variety of activities to support the local youth. Their light-hearted but sincere approach created a welcoming environment offering a range of game5 and actlvltles, some simple food and a flexlble structure. Numbers grew quickly and ideas flowed but the pandemic struck. We anticipate that when the grip of the pandemic loosens and we can socialise again we will revive the group and push on with the ideas that had been
PCC of All Saints, Friern Barnet 2020 Annual Report and Financial Statements discussed. Holiday Hunger scheme At the time when Covid-19 hit, All Saints, was starting to develop a scheme, working wlth the school, to provide meals and play activities to disadvantaged local children during the holidays. Although the proJect is currently on hold, there 15 a steering committee in place and we expect to be able to pre55 ahead as soon as the lockdown is lifted. More than £1,000 has already been raised to enable us to move ahead and we are exploring additlonal Sources of funding to whlch we can apply. Pastoral carn Durlng the pandemlc, our priests have kept In contart wlth those who are unable to attend church gUlarlY as well as others In the parish. The PCC attempted durlng the fsrst lockdown to call most members of the elettoral roll to ensure they were well, and this continued.for the rn0 vulnerable mernbers of our communlty. Our regular Tuesday lunch club in the church hall, open to the elderly of the parish, and providlng a nutrltious hot meal, companionship and support, had to c105e down after the beginning of lockdown. It ha5 not yet restarted. The Wednesday mornln9 Coffee, Cake and Cleanlng Club In church, whlch brlngs together priests, cleaners, flower arrangers and gardeners, a150 had to stop wlth lockdown. Work in the garden and church has continued In a soclally distant manner when regulations allow. Mlsslon and evangellsm The PCC distributes a weekly newsletter by emall - at the end of the year there were over 180 reclpients. The PCC malntaln a website, a °Church Near You" page, a Facebook page followed at the end of the year by 345 people and a Twltter feed. The Church and Church Hall bulldlngs All Saints, has for many year5 been committed to its premise5 being available to the local community. Until the first lockdown, All Saints, Church was usually open durlng daylight hours for private prayer. From the number of prayers and comments left in church, this was clearly a valuable service. Once we have a new incumbent, we will explore how to do this again.
PCC of All Saints, Friern Barnet 2020 Annual Report and Financial Statements InteTrfaith relationships The PCC maintains good relationships with the adjoining Sha'arel Tsedek, the North London Refom Synagogue. which uses the church hall for overflow service5. The PCC ha5 also for many years when allowed let the Church Hall on a Frlday afternoon to a Musllm prayer group. Safeguarding The PCC confirms that it has compfied with the duty under section 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016 (duty to have regard to House of Blshops. guidance on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults). Financial review We knew that 2020 would be a difficult year as we adjusted to paylng higher Common Fund of £40,000, an Increase of £10,000 on our payments for recent years, and knew we would have to pay the retentlon on the splre works from our reserves of £15,162. against which we would only receive grants of £2,527. It became a very dlfflcult year due to the pandernic as our Income fell substantlally. On ordlnary Items excluding the church hall actlvltles, Voluntary Glvlng Increased slightly over the year to £40.155 (2019.. £39,765). This increase wa5 due to one large donation and the results of a small stewardship campalgn at the end of 2019. These factors slightly outweighed a slgnlficant redurtion in collection5 at Services to £8,967 (2019.. £15.474). Very limlted ftindralslng was posslble In the year, whlch ralsed £910 (2019." 4,503). On the other hand, we were able to make savings a number of area5." running costs of the church were £12,896 (2019.. £ 14,684) costs related to Temple Avenue were £1,813 (2019.. £4,565) music costs were £6,753 (2019.. ££8,699), and we received Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme grants (the so-called furlough scheme) In respect of our Director of Music's pay while the church was closed of £2,580. We declded to contlnue to pay our Common Fund contribution in full to reflect the commitment we had made to the wider church in London. All this meant that on non-church hall items if we do not take into account
PCC of All Saints. Friern Bamet 2020 Annual Report and Financial Statements the payment in respect of the spire. our Income was £67,779 (2019.. £65,577) and our expenditure was £62.594 (2019." £62,511). Thus, ignoring the contribution to the spire works there was a surplus on the day-to-day activities excluding the church hall of £5,185 (2019." £2.928). The church hall was a very different matter. It was closed for over half the year, and to our m05t profftable lets (to dance groups) after March. As a sult. income from hall lettings collapsed to £17,563 (2019.. £55,636) and bar takings to £4,263 (2019.. £23,080). We were able to mothball the hall for much of the year and make substantlal savings in running costs, particularly in energy costs, leading to a reduction in hall running costs to £15,196 (2019." £26.474), and we employed no bar staff and bought no bar stock after March, but these would have been covered by the bar incorne. From March, our hall staff were on furlough for all or part of their employed hours for the rest of the year. This meant we received ££10,066 In Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme grants. Overall, our hall income was £33,199 (2019." £84,590) and expenditure was £48,666 (2019." ££72,202), leading to a loss on activities in the hall of ££15,467 as against a profit of ££12,388 in 2019. profits that would have been used to enhance our missional activities. Thus, overall, on ordinary activities excluding the spire. we made a loss of £10,282 (2019 a profit of £15,316). Reserves Our reserves, which had been built up against the likelihood of contribution to the cost of the spire work5 have now reduced to £64,852. We anticipate that these will further reduce this year because of the continuing impact of the pandemic. The PCC will use the remaining funds as a day to day reserve, and for anticipated future works to our heating and lighting and hall. Volunteers The PCC would like to thank all the many parishioners wiho volunteer to work so hard to make All Saints. the lively and vibrant community it is. Whether they be churchwardens, our welcoming team, PCC members, choristers, server5, cleaners, those helping to run the ha115 or those helping in our fundraising, their contrlbution is invaluable, and All Saints, could not function without them.
