The charity 15 tonstituted as a trust with a trust deed of 15 December 2010 as the governin8
docurnent.
Tru5tÈes meet at least once per year to agree broad 5tratÈgy, review finances 3nd reservÈs policies,
and decide on any gr3nts to be made but kept informed throueh email correspondence throughout
the year.
All trustees give their time voluntarily 3nd receive no remuneration or other benefits.
Trustees are appointed for a five year term of office by rÈsolution of the existing trustee5. New
trustee5 are 50urtÈd through the personal netWOfk5 of the trusrees and patron,. they then rneet one
of the existing tru5tee5 to assess suitability and appropriate checks arÈ carried our, after which thev
atrend a board meeting at which they are appointed, if all trustees and the candidates agree this is
appropriate.
Actlvltles and Objectives:
Our key objectives are..
To advancÈ the Christian religion in the Anglican Episcopal Area of the Horn of Africa Ithe-Area"I, by
providing 5UPPOrt to the Anglican Church in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa,
In partnership with the Anglican Church in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa to relieve poverty,
5ufferin8 and financial hardship, distress and ill health amongst people INin8 in the Area, including
refugee5 and displaced people.
A number of activities are condurted to achieve these objectives..

Grant applications are asse55ed in context with the above objectives and approved when it is
considered that a significant proportion of the request is in line with onÈ or more of the objectives.
Regular communication is made in order to understand 51tuations, need5 and processes with
reviews, as required, of factors that influence grant requests.
Appropriate assessment 15 fflade of financial factors, such as exchange rate5 and potential
partnerships with other similar charities that support 8crivities in the region.
Achievements and Performance- Grant Support..
The new Diocese
A fflajor change took place in 2023 to the structure of the Anglican Church in the Horn of Africa with
the formation of two new Dioce5e5- the Diocese of Gafflbella and the Diocese ol the Horn of Africa.
The Trustees were delighted to Congratulate Arihdeacon Jeremiah Maet and Reverend Canon
Martin Reek5-Williams on their appointment as Diocesan Bishops to the Diocese of Gambella and
the Diocese of the Horn of Africa respÈctively along with Bishop Anthony 8all a5 Diocesan Bishop of
North Africa.
The General Synod, held in DeterrFber, w?s an important milestone in the development of the new
Dioceses and the FACE Trustees approved grants of E6,000 to each Diocese to enable church Clergy
representatives to attend the Synod.
The Synod covered o wide rt7nge of topics incltsding the Church Handbook, Governonce,
sufeguarding ond Anglican identity along with mode15 of ministry. Reports were received on..
St Frumentlus & BUILD, the Boys 8rigode & Youth Ministry. Mothers, Union projects, the EDEN &
Water project ond Reconciliotion work.
St. Matthew's Addis Ababa
At various times throughout 2023, grant requests were received from St. Matthe￿5 church in Addis
Ababa a5 follow5.'
Grants totalling £12,227 to St. Matthe￿$ have been used for the general running of the church,
£200 to support the Breakfast Club and £572 for the Community Library. As in previous years, this
support ha5 been important as Ethiopia recovers Irorn the civil unrest and manages the effects of
high inf13tion rates.

hundred school children from the cornmurtity study for their exoms. With the lifting of COVID
restrictions. normul operations in oll our ministrie5 have resumed. The end of 2023 olso 5(FW

We ore extremely groteful to FACEfor providing gront5 to St. Motthew 5 to cover the oop in churih
operotions expenses during the 2020-2023 COVID-19 pondemic/pundemi¢ response, Ethiopion Civil
Wur. fjrtd Interregnum period which enobled the church to bt restored to a flourishing level os it is
todoy. We hope tofoctss on deferred m¢Tintenurt¢e issues now.
The Mother5 Union
The Mothers Union IMUI work with the Literacy and Eagle projects in the Garnbella region continued
during 2023. Although no further grant5 were required, the MU continued to provide progress
reports on the projects and it was encouraging and challenging to read the following..
In Itong. the literocy circle continues ro be the centre of MU lift with members now celebrating they
cort reod ond write in their mother tongue of Nuer. They ore enjoying singing 50ng5from o song book
rather then, jiJ5t U51ng their memory ond being encouruged to leod provers in church ond reading
from the bible. Some learners hclve now become loy reoder5 ond hove been 05ked to preuch In
church. Somethino they never ever imogined and ha5 qiwen them o huge sense olpride. The MU ond
church 15 therefore reullyflourishing in thÈporish.
In Mokot the MU are doing their best to work together on theirlurm but with the cost of living ond
rhe errotic wÈother, they hove found that hunger has 0150 been a distraction with rnJny fftefflber5
having to focus 011 5eurchingfor Something to help them oetfoodjor theirfomilies. They hove olso
found thot their lock of hoving rj priest in the community hos been challenging ond mony of the
member5 huve decided to meet with Itungforfellowship (Jndhoving u sert5e of tr church ¢ommuN>ity.

As in 2022, the trustees continued to work hard as a tearn to maintain the activities of ihe charity.
The Board of Trustees met on l occasion and is in regular email contact. Good contact was
maintained with St. Matthew's Vicar and Parochial Church Council. The support and encouragement
of our parron, Bishop Andrew Proud during the year h35 been much appreciated.
We have a150 maintained our communication with the Friends of the Anglican Province of Alexandria
IFAPAI and the Jerusalem and Middle East Church Association IJMECAI.

An essential eleFnent of the artivities of the Friends of the Anglican Church in Éthiopia is prayer
support for the church in the country and this has been enhanced by periodic report5 Irorn St
Matthew's in Addis Ababa and the church in Gambella and specific prayer requests. Information
received is shared with our donors both on the web site and through newsletters.
Flnanclal Revlew..
At 31" December 2023 we held cash at the bank of £47,086143.055 in 20221. Within this figure is an
amount of £13,748 which is separately restricted to 5UPPOrt the work of St Matthew's Church in
Addis Ababa. The trustees have adopted a policy ro retain all funds for this purpose in reserves
unle55 grant reque5t5, Wlthin the charitable objectives of FACE, are made by St Matthew'5 which the
trustees consider it appropriate to fund.
Apart frorn the above, our policy on reserves is to hold at least £10,000 of unrestricted fund5 3t any
time to enable the Charity to respond to efflergency requests for grants to the Anglican Church in
Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa, eg.. food emÈrgencies.
In normal time5, an upper limit on unrestricted reserves has been set at E20,0(K) at the end of any
finantial year. Apart from funds held for St Matthew's Church, we h3ve not deemed it prudent to
make grants until we can be certain that they are applied a5 required by our Statement on public
benefit, at the end of 2023, we retained £25.077 [£23,425 in 20221 in unrestricted funds. WÈ are
ready therefore to continue to apply fund5 in exce55 of our reserve5 a5 and when the needs of the
people In the area are truly identified.
Our rrain sources of income are both restricted and unrestricted donations frorn individuals,
churches and other charitable trusts including in response to specific appe31s. We have to date
received no funds from central or Ioc31 government in the UK or any other country.
Expenditure in furtherance of our objective5 ha5 been in the form of grants made to the Anglican
Church in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa or specific Anslican churches within that area. e.g. St
Matthew's Church in Addis Ababa.
A5 a very small charity we do not have many written policies, but financial matters are re¥￿eWed and
m8nagement accounts produced at every trustees meeting. A Statement of Financial Affair5 ISOFAI
report is produced rnonthly. We 8nnually review our financial controls against the checklist provided
by the Charity Commission. We have also adopted an ethical fundraisin8 policy to guide our
Custodian Trustee Funds:
