The Holmes Family Trust (Sheffield)

for the Year Ended 31 December 2022

## Report of the Trustees

The trustees present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 December 2022. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

## **Objectives and activities**

The objects of the charity are to advance the Christian faith in the UK and around the world.

The charity does this by supporting individuals, projects and other charities which improve the lives of some of the poorest in the world, and those in danger, sharing God's love in practical ways.

In planning their activities the trustees have considered the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit.

## **ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE Charitable activities**

Justice & Care update 2022

Justice and Care exists to bring freedom to individuals and communities living in the grip of slavery, to bring all those responsible for human trafficking to justice and to spark systemic change.

The charity outworks its vision in three ways - by undertaking frontline work in the UK, Romania and Bangladesh, through strategic joint operations with like minded organisations and through a commitment to sparking systemic change, extracting lessons from the frontline work and translating them into ways governments and stakeholders can fight this crime at scale.

Over the last 12 months, the impact of the work of Justice and Care has continued to grow, with survivors empowered to start businesses and enter positions of leadership, investigations supported, traffickers convicted, and targeted research and advocacy undertaken to shape the global fight.

We are currently supporting the prosecution of more than 900 accused traffickers across 310 ongoing cases. Court processes move slowly, but we are seeing nationally significant numbers of convictions in Bangladesh; and, in the UK, police repeatedly assert that court cases would have fallen apart without our Victim Navigators supporting survivors to bravely testify.

Demand for our specialist support is sadly relentless, with 108 new survivors entering our aftercare programmes over the last six months.

Other Charities / Individuals supported in 2022

The Well Church on Ecclesall Road Sheffield.

The Wroe Family, developing support for families, children and youth workers in Sheffield and beyond. Emmanuel Manishimwe (via The Kings Foundation) - HCAA / Kisoro OVC Intervention Project - Uganda - supporting orphans and vulnerable children obtaining quality education, growing healthy and developing essential skills, confidence, and opportunity project.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

## **Financial review and reserves policy**

The Statement of Financial Activities for the year is set out on page 3 of the financial statements. Income in the year was £41,700 (2021 - Nil), and total expenditure was £64,402 (2021 - £58,928), resulting in net outgoing resources of £22,702 (2021 - £58,928. There were unrealised losses during the year of £28,296 (2021 - £30,811gain ) on investment assets. Unrestricted funds carried forward at the year end were £258,322 (2021 - £309,320)

The charity has been set up with initial donations with the intention that these are to be fully utilised over a period of several years. As almost all of the expenses of the charity are grants to individuals or other charities and there are no ongoing commitments there is no need to maintain any reserves for future obligations.

The funds held by the charity are invested in low-risk investments.

## **Responsibilities and basis of report**

As the charity trustees of the Trust you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under Section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under Section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the Trust as required by Section 130 of the Act; or

2. the accounts do not accord with those records; or

Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Grants offered subject to conditions which have not been met at the year end date are noted as a commitment but not accrued as expenditure.

## **Taxation**

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.

## **Fund accounting**

Unrestricted funds can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees.
