## Freedom Charity Report for FY 2020/21 

Despite the widespread difficulties during this year caused by pandemic restrictions Freedom Charity has risen to the challenge providing its unique service to the many helpline callers, training professionals and reaching schools through on-line presentations. 

The volume of calls to the 24/7 helpline increased by about 40% during lockdown, due to a general increase in abuse and neglect in the home in which victims have been entrapped during lockdown, without the normal basic level of safeguarding provided by school staff and social contact.  The extreme pressure on refuge spaces, caused by a seriously elevated level of domestic violence, meant that it has been difficult to find satisfactory placements for potential victims of forced marriage and associated abuses.  The Police have often resorted to allocating bed-andbreakfast locations without adequate social and economic support, leaving victims in a very vulnerable and frightening situation. 

Through ongoing practical experience, the Charity has improved its performance in on-line training and educational sessions.   Although the product is not quite as satisfying and interactive as the face-to-face provision, feedback from staff and students has been extremely positive and encouraging.  Unfortunately, budgetary constraints in many schools have led to extreme reluctance to pay realistic expenses for these educational sessions.  While the Charity aims to meet willingly all requests for assistance, the economic burden on its limited resources is growing. 

The Freedom Charity fund-raising committee has had some success in raising funding through various Trusts.  The techniques for bid writing and approaching potential donors are being developed and it is hoped that this will enable the Charity to gain a better level of financial support in future years.  Funding gained through this method is largely allocated to projects such as book reprinting, new publicity, community outreach and website regeneration.  The Charity is also seeking an enhanced level of unrestricted income which can meet core costs and make the operation more sustainable.  With this in mind, Freedom has raised an on-line Crowd-funder and this initiative has brought in some welcome funding.  On-line sales of the Charity’s books and symbolic Red Triangle Badges also contribute a limited amount to the unrestricted income. 

Each year, Freedom Charity devotes special attention to International Day of Zero Tolerance towards FGM Day (6[th] February) and International Women’s Day (8[th] March).  This year saw a successful school and community on-line event and a Freedom social media campaign to raise awareness of the key issues on these special days. 

Freedom Charity now has nine active Trustees and a number of associate volunteers who join in business meetings and support the planning, policy making, fund raising and operational work.  The CEO, Aneeta Prem, carries out many vital duties and it is clear that, as the work progresses and funds permit, Freedom will need to recruit staff, probably on a part time basis to assist with a range of support work, freeing Aneeta to devote more of her efforts to training, education and rescue 



of victims.  Also, during this year, she has been in high demand as a contributor to relevant broadcasts on network TV and both network and local Radio and to a good number of magazine and press articles. 

This year has seen an increase in the prevalence of Virginity Testing through the trend in grooms’ families to demand certificated evidence of a potential bride’s sexual “purity”.  Freedom has also received and turned down a number of requests for financial assistance to pay for Hymenoplasty (Virginity repair surgery).  The Charity has been at the forefront of raising awareness of these issues and demanding that UK Gov takes effective steps to outlaw these practices which are clearly contrary to British Values. 

As Freedom Charity moves into the 2021/22 financial year there are plans to employ an Education and Community Support Officer (part-time), renew its vital website, publish a third edition of its popular book (But It’s Not Fair), improve its publicity and social media presence, reconnect it’s important information smartphone App with Android devices and intensify its efforts to reach schools and communities in the North East and East London Boroughs where there is the greatest need for its very specific education and training programmes. 

Thanks are due to all Trustees and volunteers without whose proactive support the Charity would not be able to function.  Also, Freedom is indebted to the legal firms which have provided pro-bono assistance with various important matters during the year. 

Although Freedom Charity remains small in financial terms, it punches well above its weight in delivering real change, raising awareness and saving lives.  The Charity remains under an Unincorporated registration but is taking steps to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation in the next financial year.
