## **Objectives**
The objects of the Church are, for the benefit of the public:
- To advance the Christian faith [in accordance with the Statement of Beliefs] in such ways and in such parts of the United Kingdom or the world as the Trustees from time to time may think fit;
- To relieve sickness and financial hardship and to promote and preserve good health by the provision of funds, goods or services of any kind, including through the provision of counselling and support in such parts of the United Kingdom or the world as the Trustees from time to time may think fit; and
- To advance education in such ways and in such parts of the United Kingdom or the world as the Trustees from time to time may think fit.
## **Activities**
We finally took over the lease of Stratford Hub in July 2023 and appointed a facilities manager to look after the building and generate income from hiring out the space to third parties. This allows more of our donations to be spent on our primary objectives rather than paying rent and overheads.
The activities run in 2023 were like those in 2022. In addition to our Sunday worship service, we ran community outreach activities at The Hub all day on a Tuesday and on Friday evenings. We also used the venue on Saturdays for one-off events like Fashion Forward and our annual Christmas Wreath making event. We also have lunch together after our Sunday meeting a couple of times a year, including on our International Day. While some activities have been run in partnership with Young Life International and London City Mission, most activities are run by volunteers from Hope Church Newham.
## **Advance the Christian faith**
Hope Church Newham has a worship service at the Hub each Sunday which is live streamed for those unable to make in-person meetings due to frailty, ill health, or because they live too far away.
Hope Church Newham continued to provide volunteer led children’s activities every Sunday for those between 0 and 11 years old. A youth meeting is also held every other Sunday.
The weekly parent/carer and toddler group which began in November 2021 continued throughout 2023. The numbers attending was lower than in 2022 and with key volunteers unable to continue in their role, we took the decision to close the group in early 2024.
As reported in previous accounts Hope Church Newham is partnering with a couple employed by Young Life International (YLI). Their aim is to advance the Christian faith among young people including those who have no church background. In 2023 Hope Church supported this work with financial gifts totalling £3,300 and volunteers to help run the activities described below and to sit on the YLI regional committee. Activities undertaken in these joint roles included:

Five-day football camp with bible teaching
Five-day camp at a local school where 47 young people enjoyed hours of fun, food, and bible teaching.
Taking 26 young people to a Young Life residential camp in Scotland and being part of a group that took 15 young people from the church to Newday, a gathering of 7000 young people from across the New Frontiers family of churches. Both these events provided the young people with plenty of fun and opportunities to worship together and to learn more about the Christian faith.
Hope Church Newham partnered with London City Mission (LCM) throughout 2023. LCM missionaries helped run the toddler group referred to above and Hope at the Hub (see below). They used these opportunities to build relationships with those attending the groups, talking to them about Jesus and encouraging them to come to the church and to Alpha (see below). They also trained Hope Church volunteers in how to have gospel conversations with those coming to these community events. As part of this partnership Hope Church Newham contributed £750 to LCM.
Hope Church Newham has continued to meet regularly to pray for the advance of the Christian faith and for the good of the local community in East London.
Hope Church Newham has continued to support the advance of the Christian faith outside the local church giving with note 7.3 providing a information on all of the £8,123 grants given .
## **Relieve sickness & financial hardship and to promote and preserve good health**
Hope Church Newham distributed £4,500 in food vouchers in 2023. £3,500 was raised by the special offering held at the end of 2022 in response to the cost-of-living crisis, and a further £1,000 was given during 2023. The vouchers were distributed to people in need known to the Church and its members and to some individuals who attended Hope at the Hub.
Hope Church has also provided counselling and prayer for those facing difficult situations including sickness, abuse, and financial hardship. As reported in our 2022 accounts we raised over £3,500 to support Orchards, a charity which provides counselling services to vulnerable women in London. Hope Church Newham continued to support Orchards in 2023 by providing, free of charge, a dedicated space where vulnerable women could be counselled. Some members also received training and are now coming alongside women who are being supported by Orchards.
Hope Church Newham received a grant of £1,600 from the London Borough of Newham as part of its Welcome Newham programme, welcoming asylum seekers and refugees to the area. £1,200 of the grant was received in early 2023 and the balance in early 2024. In the early part of the year LCM missionaries and Hope Church volunteers visited hotels housing asylum seekers and invited them to Hope at the Hub where a hot meal was provided. Hope at the Hub volunteers also worked in partnership with council employees to promote the Hub and encourage asylum seekers to come along. Activities were tailored for those who spoke little English. While the number of asylum seekers and refugees who attended were low, the number of other guests doubled during the year and over 100 different people attended between August and December. These included rough sleepers who were referred to Streetlink, people living in temporary accommodation, and many people who are lonely and isolated. Their ages range from early 20s up to 80s and there is an equal split between men and women. We have people from different faiths and no faith and many different ethnicities. Hope at the Hub volunteers keep in contact with guests during the week and have helped with filling in forms, signposting to other services, meeting up for coffee and more.

## **Advance education**
In previous years members of Hope Church Newham went into local schools to teach and explain the basics of the Christian faith in religious education lessons. This did not happen in 2023, part is part of the activities of Young Life which Hope Church Newham supports. The trustees will explore new ways to meet this objective.
## **Achievements & Performance**
Hope Church Newham continued to promote the Christian faith every week on a Sunday and through other settings throughout the year. It continued to run Sunday services and children’s and youth activities.
Hope Church Newham ran two ten-week Alpha courses providing people with the opportunity to explore the Christian faith in a welcoming environment where they were served a meal.
Hope Church Newham community groups have continued to meet mid-week on a regular basis. While some groups meet in person others have an online meeting supplemented by in-person gatherings at least once a month. These continue to be a great way for those who attend Hope Church to get to know others and to be challenged to deepen their relationship with God.
In 2023 the trustees continued their programme to ensure that Hope Church Newham has appropriate policies and procedures in place. During the year the leadership team and trustees signed off on its equality and diversity, communications and confidentiality policies. It also began a programme of annual and triennial reviews of existing policies.
## **Plans for future periods**
We will continue to use our Stratford Hub premises for our Sunday meetings, to run Alpha outreach courses, youth activities and Hope at the Hub. We plan to run more activities from the Hub including events for women and after church socials and to make greater use of the counselling room.
We will seek grant funding to allow us to open Hope at the Hub on a second day each week. We will reopen the baby and toddler group when there are sufficient volunteers.
Hope Church Newham is part of the Commission Sphere in the New Frontiers family of churches and will attend the Commission festival in August 2024; a five-day celebration held annually at the Bath and South West Showground.
The trustees will continue its programme to ensure Hope Church Newham has appropriate policies in place and that these are followed in practice.

## **Financial Review**
Total income decreased by £10k to £176k in 2023. Unrestricted giving was £14k higher than 2022 as a result of higher income through renting out the space the Hub which Hope Church took on the lease of mid way through the year.
Total expenditure of £217k was £51k higher than 2022. £42k was a result of taking on the lease of the Hub, with £18k due to the higher lease cost compared to rent, £10k due to higher running costs, and £14k of one-off spend to aquire equipment in the building.
Unrestricted funds excluding designated funds decreased by £14k to £26k by the end of 2023.

I report on the accounts for the year ending 31/12/2023 which are set out on pages 10 to 14.
## **Respective responsibilities of the Trustees and Independent Examiner**
The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to
- examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
- follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
- state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of Independent Examiner's Statement**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission.
An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the management committee concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in a full audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.

## **1. Basis of Accounting**
The accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities effective April 2008.
There has been no change to the accounting policies (valuation rules and methods of accounting) since last year

**Incoming Resources** Recognition of incoming resources These are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when the charity is certain, or virtually certain they will be received, and they are measurable. Grants and donations Grants and donations are only included in the SoFA when the charity has unconditional entitlement to the resources. Tax reclaims on donations and gifts Incoming resources from tax reclaims are included in the SoFA at the same time as the gift to which they relate. Volunteer help The value of any voluntary help received is not included in the accounts but is described in the trustees’ annual report. Investment income This is included in the accounts when receivable. **Expenditure & Liabilities** Liability recognition Liabilities are recognised as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out resources. Grants payable without performance These are only recognised in the accounts when a commitment has been made and there are conditions no conditions to be met relating to the grant which remain in the control of the charity.

## **6.3 Pension Scheme**
A defined benefit Pension Scheme is provided through Peoples Pension. Hope Church Newham contributes up to 12%, and employees contribute up to 6%, and it is available to all employees.
A defined contribution plan is a post-employment benefit plan under which the company pays fixed contributions into a separate entity and will have no legal or constructive obligation to pay further amounts. Obligations for contributions to defined contribution pension plans are recognised as an expense in the Statement of Financial Activities in the periods during which services are rendered by employees.
