## **Objectives**
The objects of the Church are, for the benefit of the public:
• To advance the Christian faith [in accordance with the Statement of Beliefs] in such ways and in such parts of the United Kingdom or the world as the Trustees from time to time may think fit;
• To relieve sickness and financial hardship and to promote and preserve good health by the provision of funds, goods or services of any kind, including through the provision of counselling and support in such parts of the United Kingdom or the world as the Trustees from time to time may think fit; and
• To advance education in such ways and in such parts of the United Kingdom or the world as the Trustees from time to time may think fit.
## **Activities**
The COVID-19 pandemic continued to have a big impact on the activities of Hope Church Newham for much of 2021. As explained in the future plans section of the 2020 accounts, when we started to meet again in person it was at a new venue, The Hub at 259 High Street Stratford. We were able to rent the new venue on some weekdays as well as Sundays, enabling us to increase the range of activities offered when Covid allowed. Most activities are run by volunteers from Hope Church Newham.
## Advance the Christian faith & advance education
Hope Church Newham continued to run its Sunday worship service online for the first six months of 2021. The church recommenced in-person meetings in July 2021. We live streamed the service for the benefit of those who were still concerned about Covid and for those unable to make in-person meetings due to fraility, ill health, or because they live too far away.
Hope Church Newham continued to provide volunteer led children’s activities every Sunday for those between 0 and 11 years old, moving to in-person events in July 2021.
In November 2021 Hope Church Newham took advantage of being able to use its new premises during the week and began a weekly parent/carer and toddler group which quickly became popular. The venue is large and bright and a great space from which to operate. The toddler group includes a 15 to 20-minute slot where the Christian faith is taught using puppets, bible stories with props and songs.
As reported in previous accounts Hope Church Newham is partnering with a couple employed by Young Life International (YLI) who are also youth leaders in the church. Their aim is to advance the Christian faith among young people including those who have no church background. In 2021 Hope Church supported this work with financial gifts totalling £10,250 and volunteers to help run the activities described below and to sit on the YLI regional committee. Activities undertaken in these joint roles included:
During Covid – a virtual bible study, a virtual fun club with online games, silly characters and a short bible message and a virtual craft club.

And when Covid rules permitted:
- Kick football academy
- In-person craft club
- A five-day camp at a local school where 40 young people enjoyed hours of fun, food, and bible teaching.
- Weekly discipleship breakfast
- From October 2021, after school drop-in and Club night in new church venue
Hope Church Newham has continued to meet regularly to pray for the advance of the Christian faith and for the good of the local community in East London. These monthly meetings were held in person from Autumn 2021.
Hope Church Newham has continued to support the advance of the Christian faith outside the local church, both in the UK and overseas. In 2021 Hope Church Newham gave £1,050.
## Relieve sickness & financial hardship and to promote and preserve good health
Hope Church Newham has provided financial and practical support to a food bank for several years and from its earliest days has helped individuals and families facing financial hardship and difficult situations to help pay rent, heating bills and food shopping.
Hope Church has also provided counselling and prayer for those facing difficult situations including sickness, abuse, and financial hardship.
As outlined in the 2020 annual report, Hope Church set up a fund to provide financial help required as a result of the pandemic and used £1,250 for this purpose in 2021. With Covid being a real issue for much of 2021 staff and volunteers continued to reach out to church members and their families offering support and help.
Covid has had a big impact on people’s mental health and well-being and there are increasing numbers of people who are lonely and isolated. In November 2021 Hope Church Newham began a weekly drop-in operating from its new venue. This provides a place where anyone over school leaving age can chill, relax, and have a cup of tea in a comfortable setting. Games, quizzes and arts and crafts help provide a stimulating environment where friendships begin and grow.
## Advance education
In previous years members of Hope Church Newham went into local schools to teach and explain the basics of the Christian faith in religious education lessons. This did not happen in 2021. The trustees will explore new ways to meet this objective post pandemic.
## Achievements & Performance
Despite the global pandemic Hope Church Newham continued to promote the Christian faith every week on a Sunday and through other settings throughout the year. It continued to run Sunday services and childrens’ activities and was able to reach new people of all ages through its online presence.
Major achievements of 2021 included finding our new home, The Hub in Stratford High Street, Stratford; raising sufficient funds to pay the higher rent and beginning negotiations to take over the lease of these well-equipped premises.
We have continued to see growth in the number of young people attending Hope Church activities and this reflects the time our youth leaders spent engaging with young people both during and post Covid.
Hope Church Newham community groups continued to meet, moving online during the pandemic. Some groups returned to meeting in person as soon as Covid allowed while others have a mixture of online and in-person events enabling those who are reluctant to come out in the evenings to be part of these groups.

In 2021 the trustees began a programme to ensure that Hope Church Newham has appropriate policies and procedures in place. Before the end of the year the leadership and trustees signed off on a revised safeguarding policy and adopted a data protection policy.
## **Financial Review**
Total income increased by £1k to £159k in 2021. Unrestricted giving was £10k higher than 2021, as the impact of Covid-19 on giving unwound as we met face to face again.
Total expenditure of £123k was £43k lower than 2020. Restricted giving was £56k lower than 2020, as in 2020 two years of special giving grants were made. Most of the restricted giving ion 2021 has also been carried forward as part of Building Fund to allow us to take over the Hub. Unrestricted spend was £14k higher than 2020 as we started to meet in person again midway through the year.
Unrestricted funds excluding designated funds increased by £19k to £42k by the end of 2021.
## **Plans for future periods**
We expect to take over the lease of The Hub, 259 Stratford High Street, Stratford by the end of 2022. We will continue to use these premises for our Sunday meetings, to run Alpha outreach courses, youth activities and the community-based activities described above. In coming years, we hope to offer more of these and other activities, and will seek grant funding and additional donations to allow us to do so.
We also plan more activities away from the Hub including local outings and taking young people to youth camps.
The trustees will continue its programme to ensure Hope Church Newham has appropriate policies in place and that these are followed in practice.

I report on the accounts for the year ending 31st December 2021 which are set out on pages 6 to 11.
## **Respective responsibilities of the Trustees and Independent Examiner**
The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
## **It is my responsibility to**
- examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
- follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
- state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of Independent Examiner's Statement**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission.
An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the management committee concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in a full audit, and consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.

- to keep accounting records in accordance with s.130 of the 2011 Act; or

## **1 Basis of Accounting**
The accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities effective April 2008.
There has been no change to the accounting policies (valuation rules and methods of accounting) since last year
No changes have been made to accounts for previous years.

## **Incoming Resources**
Recognition of incoming resources These are included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when the charity is certain, or virtually certain they will be received, and they are measurable. Grants and donations Grants and donations are only included in the SoFA when the charity has unconditional entitlement to the resources. Tax reclaims on donations and Incoming resources from tax reclaims are included in the SoFA at gifts the same time as the gift to which they relate. Volunteer help The value of any voluntary help received is not included in the accounts but is described in the trustees’ annual report. Investment income This is included in the accounts when receivable.
**Expenditure & Liabilities** Liability recognition Liabilities are recognised as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to pay out resources. Grants payable without These are only recognised in the accounts when a commitment performance conditions has been made and there are no conditions to be met relating to the grant which remain in the control of the charity.

## **6.3 Pension Scheme**
A defined benefit Pension Scheme is provided through Peoples Pension. Hope Church Newham contributes 9%, and employees contribute 3%, and it is available to all employees.
A defined contribution plan is a post-employment benefit plan under which the company pays fixed contributions into a separate entity and will have no legal or constructive obligation to pay further amounts. Obligations for contributions to defined contribution pension plans are recognised as an expense in the Statement of Financial Activities in the periods during which services are rendered by employees.
