## THE GROUPS FINANCIAL YEAR

Groups financial year will remain 1[st] of April tot he31st March, following the standard financial tax year of the UK.

## THE GROUP SCOUT COUNCIL QUARACY

The Trustee board recommends that the quoracy for the 2026 AGM should be raised to **10 people** . It is vitally important that all Scout Council members have the chance to vote on the matters surrounding their Group.

At present the group has 180 members in the Group and puts the Group at approx. 200 voting members.

The proposed quoracy is 5% to allow decisions to be made, however the Trustee Board believes that this should be raised to 2025% in two years time.

## **CHAIRMANS END OF YEAR REPORT 2024-2025**

As we look back over the past twelve months, I would once again like to thank everyone involved at 4[th] Golcar Scout Group for making it another successful twelve months. As Chair, I hear first-hand the wonderful opportunities that are provided for the Young People of Golcar. As a parent, I see these opportunities in real life! It really is credit to the whole team for their hard-work, dedication and passion to providing excellent scouting to the whole Golcar community.

As a trustee board, we continue to have oversight of the strategic and legal operations of the scout group. We continue to ensure that the Scout Group fulfils its aims and mission. As always, we would like more volunteers to help continue these successes – as the phrase goes ‘Many Hands Make Light Work’, so if you are aware of anyone who may be interested in becoming involved, either as a leader, a sectional assistant or even someone to help cut the grass, please let one of the members of the team know.

We are really proud of our Leader Team who provide the Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts with a great weekly programme and a wide range of additional activities. A good number of hours are spent by the Leader Teams planning and preparing for the meetings and activities they arrange. Many thanks to Duane and his team and ALL the Team Leaders, Team Members, Helpers and our Young Leaders for their superb efforts in delivering scouting and life skills to our youth members.

The building committee continues to work tirelessly to ensure the building is a useable and safe space for events to take place. I thank them for all their hard work with this. We are lucky to have such a wonderful facility in Golcar to provide excellent scouting, but we are always looking for others to help maintain the building. Again, we ask for anyone to get in touch if they are interested in helping with the running of the building.

Let’s hope that 2025- 2026 continues to be a successful year for Golcar Scouting.

Matthew Bradbury

## **GROUP LEAD VOLUNTEERS END OF YEAR REPORT 2024-25**

For Anna and me, it is hard to believe that this is our fourth AGM and third as the Group Leadership Team, meaning we have completed three and half years of GLV service… yet it feels like much less!

Since the last AGM, both Anna and I have received our GLV certificates to prove we are fully fledged GLVs and Anna has received her first set of Wood Beads! My Wood beads took nearly two years to appear! The Scout association must like Anna more than they like me… let’s face it, you’re all thinking the same thing!

Every year is different at 4[th] and this year has certainly been just that, different… different challenges, different highlights and different fun and exciting adventures for our youth members, as everyone has come to expect from our fantastic group.

One difference we have had to deal with, is the change in our volunteer management system. For me, this has been an exceptionally large challenge. It is an area where we add team members to sections, control their DBS applications, awards for service and mandatory personal training dubbed the Growing Roots scheme. This system along with its constant reminders telling me to remind our volunteers about the dreaded new online safety training that must be completed by the 14[th] of July or risk the big scary suspension from duties email. On the back of this struggle the TSA has pulled the Youth equivalent system and so OSM is here to stay for the foreseeable future! Hooray!

Our group numbers have slightly declined since last year from 165 to 153 youth members so through reasons, with our biggest decrease in the Beaver and Cubs section. On the other hand, our leader team has grown slightly, and we now have over 30 leaders and countless helpers that support our camps. It is really nice to see parents, grandparents and carers getting involved where they can. With the support of all you amazing people our group would not continue to thrive.

Both Anna and I acknowledge that we need a new plan after summer, to meet with the leaders, trustees and helpers to develop a strategy to encourage more young people in to scouting so that we can continue to change and enrich young lives as well as our own, developing #skillsForLife.

## OUR SHORT-TERM GOALS AND UPDATES SINCE LAST YEAR’S AGM.

## CENTRE SPACES

We continue to improve the centre spaces and storage, and we continue to enquire about protection for our hall floors, investing in sound proofing in the John Ripley Hall. This year sees the completion (or there abouts) of the Den becoming a sensory room for all user groups which was partly funded by a Co-op grant.

The GLVs Award continues to be a success in the recognition of leaders and youth members in their efforts to remove barriers from scouting with over 20 people being awarded. At the time of writing this report, we have had 22 nominations of which all have been approved, and one is still to award in the coming weeks!

Working with the Trustee Board this year, with have taken a number of steps to move closer towards our Green Agenda goals. We have started saving to invest in renewable energy sources and will be working with the Scouting Teams, Scout Council and other stakeholders to slowly continue our push to be better with our environment.

8

We will be encouraging our Young Leaders to become involved in the Green Young Leaders Scheme and become eco champions for our group, we will take on and follow the educational nature parks scheme to take on a green project, map our HQ and improve its positive impact on nature.

## PEOPLE WE HAVE LOST

Now to some sad news. Earlier this year we learnt that one of our former youth members, Michael sadly passed away. Michael was part of Golcar scout group when I was a youth member. The group sent our condolences and to Michaels parents. At the funeral there was a collection, and the collection was donated to 4[th] Golcar Scout Group. I wanted to make sure that the money donated was used in a meaningful way, in memory of Michael. I asked the Board of Trustees to use this money to start our formal hardship fund to allow those less fortunate to get the most out of scouting. This was of course approved and has had a positive impact on those less fortunate already!

## THANK YOU…

Now for the thank you’s! We all know that anything and everything we are trying to achieve at 4[th] Golcar, can only be done through the support of our vast array of dedicated volunteers, from our Trustee Board members, Sectional Team Leaders, Team Members, Helpers, parent supporters and obviously our youth members that volunteer to support across sections, as Young Leaders. We quite literally could not run this amazing scout group without all of you and your dedicated efforts!

Once again, I must thank and commend our Treasurer, Rosie for her continued efforts of managing the group finances. Rosie has one of the hardest jobs in the group and she goes about her business with ZERO complaints. This year, Didier, our independent auditor commented that he will only continue to audit our accounts if Rosie “is in charge of them”. When I asked why, he said that the record keeping is excellent, well formatted and easy to approve because it is all extremely organised like no other accounts! High praise there Rosie, I’ve known Didier for nearly 20 years, and he’s never paid me a single compliment!

Both Anna and I look forward to a new and exciting fresh scouting year commencing after summer, working hard to with our leader teams to support the youth members of our group, our local community and surrounding areas. And of course, enjoying the precious moments we gather along the way through volunteering at our exceptional scout group!

One more thank-you! This year was the groups second Group Camp under our leadership, Anna has done a fantastic job in organising the Super Hero Camp, working with all sections to develop a program that our young people could enjoy, taking part in multiple exciting and themed activities such as a the gladiator challenge, climbing wall, air rifle shooting, soft axe throwing, low ropes course and much more. It has been a stressful time for Anna juggling the camp planning, work, family and her master’s Course at University. In my eyes, Anna has certainly gained the superhero title! This year Anna has been instrumental in supporting me with the success of the group! Thank you for all that you do and brin to our group!

## **BEAVER SCOUT SECTION - END OF YEAR REPORT 2024-25**

The Beaver Section continues to thrive, with 37 active members across our two colonies. The majority of our new Beavers have progressed from our Squirrel Drey, showing a strong pipeline of young members growing within the Group.

We’ve welcomed several new leaders this year, strengthening our fantastic team. Their dedication and teamwork ensure we can offer our Beavers a varied, exciting, and engaging programme. Thanks to Alana who stepped down as a Friday volunteer, your help in section has been much appreciated. The support of these volunteers is invaluable—our section couldn’t run without their hard work and the generous gift of their time. As we often say, _“Beavers are awesome”_ —and that includes our amazing volunteers!

There is always room for more adult volunteers, whether on a regular or flexible basis. Truly, many hands make light work. We’re also grateful to a number of amazing parents who step in when needed, as well as leaders from other sections—and even from 15th Harrogate—who’ve assisted with sleepovers. Their contributions are deeply appreciated.

A special thank you goes to Louise, who, after many planning sessions involving takeaway food, wall charts, and the occasional adult beverage, has helped reinvigorate our two-year programme. With regular attendance and a bit of support from home, our Beavers can now realistically achieve their Chief Scout Bronze Award by the time they move on from the section.

We’ve also been fortunate to work with some fantastic Young Leaders this year. Their enthusiasm and commitment have been a huge asset, and we’re grateful for all they’ve done.

## **SCOUT SECTION - END OF YEAR REPORT 2024-25**

We currently have 38 scouts registered and we have 8 patrols to accommodate them.

Ten scouts gained their Chief Scouts Gold Award. In total 515 badges were awarded during the year, including 19 different activity badges – some of which we ran at scouts and others which young people completed in their own time. We also continue to run the You Shaped Award scheme with scouts gaining their core, lead, plan and represent sections of this badge as part of ongoing programme where each patrol plans and runs a meeting night each year. 7 Scouts gained their 50 nights away badges. 28 Scouts gained their West Yorkshire Scout Protect the Planet Award – a great new badge combining many aspects of outdoor and environmental activities.

We attended several camps during the year: Troop ack to Basics Camp at Hesley Wood, Countyu Camping Competition at Bradley Wood (which we won!), Barlow in North Yorkshire for 5 days, Summer Sleepover at HQ, Camping Competition at Bradley Wood, Winter Indoor Weekend at HQ, a PL/APL Training event and Sleepover at HQ and a camp in March at Silverwood Scout Camp.

We entered all scout section district events finishing first in the Top Troop Trophy for 2024. Events included Expedition Challenge, Laser Tag, Quiz and Cooking. Seven of our PL’s/APL’s were down to represent our Troop at the County PL/APL Forum at Bradley Wood in November but this was cancelled on the day due to bad weather.

Other events have included Jamboree on the Internet, Remembrance Day Parade, St Georges Day Parade, Golcar Lily Day and the 4 Seasons Walk.

The Scout Leader team includes myself, Craig Ellis, Kevan Shuttleworth, Dave Benham, Bradley Ellis, Paul Roberts, Norah Fox, Ebony Everson, Alex Benham and Emma Sharpe. We’ve also had one young leader helping out this year and I’d like to thank Faith for her time – she has planned and run some really good programmes as part of her own Award Work in Explorers. Between us we make a great team and I would like to thank them all for their commitment and help in providing an excellent programme for the Scout Troop.

## **EXPLORERS – END OF YEAR REPORT 2024-25**

We currently have 16 Explorer Scouts in the unit.

The Explorer unit had another very busy year with Camps, Activities and District events throughout the year.

Our events and activity highlights during the year have included, District Wild Camp at West Nab, Challenge Valley and Zip Wire at Bradley Wood, Single Handed Sailing at Green Witherns, Ice Skating and Roller Skating.

This year we didn’t run a Summer Camp as a number of our members attended the Scout Belgium Trip in March 2024, however this year we did see the return of Secret September. This event is a secret to everyone attending, and they find out about activities as and when they happen. This year we visited Hathersage, Walked the Monsal Trail, took part in a treasure hunt around Eyam and had a climbing lesson in Sheffield. Feedback from the event was positive and we hope to run these events in the future.

In June 2024, we launched our International Adventure for the Summer of 2026 to Kandersteg International Scout Centre, Switzerland. This trip marks the first ever time our Explorer Unit will have done an international trip on their own. We’ve set a fundraising goal of £15,000 to help make this an adventure of a lifetime. Teams of Explorers and Parents have been busy fundraising during the year, including, running a stall at the Firework event at the Walkers Arms, running a Wreath Making Workshop at Golcar Scout and Community Centre and running a Lazer Zone fundraising evening. Fundraising is set to continue over the next year as we work towards our goals. A huge thank you to everyone who has helped with fundraising so far.

## YOUNG LEADERS

Explorers have been working on their young leader training and have been supporting all sections over the past year.

Our Young Leaders whilst also helping on Section nights have also helping sections with their trips and camps.

It’s great to continue to see our Young Leaders progressing into adult leadership roles once they have turned 18.

## DUKE OF EDINBURGH’S AWARD

In 2024 we returned to the Yorkshire Dales for our Expedition season, visiting locations such as, Horton in Ribblesdale and Settle.

Expedition training for the 2025 Expedition season was completed in February at Scammonden Activity Centre along with other groups in the District.

We presented 7 Bronze Awards, 2 Silver Awards.

Within 2024/2025 we also had two past Explorer members, Paul Roberts and Harry Marchington, complete their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award. A huge well done from everyone in the unit!

## SCOUTING AWARDS

During the year we have awarded two Chief Scout Platinum Awards.

Members are continuing to work towards their Platinum, Diamond, and King’s Scout Award (Previously the Queen’s Scout award) – the top award in Scouting.

We continued to focus on the top awards over the last year with several members now not far from completing these awards.

Well done to everyone achieving either their Scouting Awards or Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards during the year. This is a great achievement and lots of time and effort went into these awards.

I’d like to thank all the adult volunteers who have helped the unit over the last year, their help and support makes a real difference and is very much appreciated.

As of 1[st] April 2025 the Leader team for the Explorer Unit is;
