Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

Church attendance Church attendance figures 2022. The average weekly attendance for 2022 was 51 (2021:40) in person, of whom 9 (2021:8) were under 16 years old. These figures do not include special services such as Christmas, Easter, Baptisms etc. There were 66 (2021:66) Parishioners on the Electoral Roll in 2022, 34 of whom were resident in the Parish. Order Two Holy Communion service is at 9am on the 1 st and 3 rd Sundays of the month. The average attendance to this is 4. Review of the PCC Year Revd Nick Hutchinson has completed his sixth year at St Paul’s. In that time, he has encouraged the Church to pray into every situation and to be thankful for all that God does in this place. We have seen many answers to prayer. A week of prayer and fasting took place in November which many found to be beneficial. In January we began a process of re-visioning, seeking God for the next stage of ministry at St Paul’s church. This consisted of a lent series of sermons based on Isaiah 61:1-4 and times of prayer and study. The PCC had an away day and a new vision was brought to the church after Easter. Our ‘strap line’ is : ‘Loving Jesus, Loving our Neighbour, All are welcome here.’ We felt very strongly that God was challenging us in becoming more invitational and so we have started to change the way we do certain events and services to make them more accessible and encouraged all of us to invite friends and family to them. We have seen some growth in our numbers following this and many people have come and checked us out, some staying and making their home with us. We are a growing church. The ministry of Rev Richard Hay, the Honorary Assistant Minister, continued to be greatly appreciated throughout the Parish and he has been a great support and encourager to everyone. Mrs Elmarie Illingworth resigned as administrator. She has done an amazing job. Her post has not been refilled yet as we assess how much the administration of the church has changed and what needs there are. Mrs Ros Banks continues as an administrator; whose primary responsibilities relate to hall hire and communications. Her efforts have greatly increased the revenue from hall hires, a much needed income and it should be noted that she often does much more than is in her job description. Susie Watson continued as our new Children’s and Families minister. Susie is now ordained priest and is the curate of St Paul’s (SSM). Due to contracting covid whilst on her pre-ordination retreat, Susie had to miss the ordination in the cathedral. This meant however that we hosted her ordination in September which was a very special occasion with Bishop Andrew and the Archdeacons present with us, along with many guests. MASCOT (Maybury And Sheerwater Community Trust), a Charity limited by guarantee, was established in 2011 to work with St. Michael’s Church, Sheerwater to impact the needy Surrey communities of Maybury and Sheerwater. The work of the charity in Maybury is growing at Let’s Talk which is an opportunity for those for whom English is a second language to rehearse everyday conversation and learn something of British culture. Another thought about reaching out to the group is to run cooking sessions as a social event. A Friendship Café has been running for some time. We said goodbye to Martin Smith as he retired and we appointed a new Maybury coordinator, Jasmine Kapoor.

During the year, the PCC met 6 times (2021:8), excluding APCM and this includes extraordinary meetings and a day away . There was an average 90% (2021:90%) attendance. A Standing Committee group met 4 times (2021:5) in the year between PCC meetings to discuss issues and prepare for the PCC.

Various homegroups and ministries to the young and elderly continue. They mostly met on Zoom.

Buildings

The buildings are in good order with regular repairs and adjustments made as needed.

This last year, 2022 was a full year out of the restrictions of the Covid 19 pandemic. This has made church life a lot easier but some of the changes we made to accommodate the restrictions have remained as they actually were very useful and fruitful.

Sundays

St Paul’s gathers on Sunday mornings at 10:30am each week to worship Jesus together. Communion is celebrated each week either at the early morning service at 9am or the main gathering at 10.30am. The morning service is contemporary and informal, with the first week of the month being All Age, led by Susie Watson and team. The 9am service is the Order Two from Common Worship which is more traditional and nearly the same as the BCP. On the third Sunday we also host a family learning time called Family Blaze, which is in the community halls. Parents go out with the children and this now has an older group which breaks off for more in depth conversation and bible study part way through. This is a sign of our growing ministry amongst families and children.

The lectionary readings are followed each week during the morning service unless we are doing a particular series. We have spent time as a church seeking God afresh for vision and direction in 2022 and we followed a lent series of sermons based on Isaiah 61:1-4 and the PCC spent time away to pray and seek God.

We held Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, Ascension Day (Thursday), Harvest, Remembrance and Christmas services.

New Wine

New Wine did take place in 2022 and a small group went. It was very good, a time of real blessing and all of us had underestimated how much we had missed it. We hope to go again in 2023.

Last year we were entering into a time of vision seeking and we did indeed do this. We came to a point in May where the new vision we have is as follows:

At St Pauls we are called to:

This has led us to think and pray about how we become more invitational and we have hosted events such as the Big Quiz Night, inviting friends and family and increased our prayerfulness for who we can continue to invite. Our desire is to see people come to know Jesus, follow him and walk with us as we do this. We have seen new people come and join us and we held a fruitful Alpha course from January to April too.

Christmas

Christmas 2022 included Nine Lessons and Carols, Christmas eve and Christmas Day. There was also a nativity drama and activities in December including a Messy Church Christmas for families.

Easter

This year during Holy Week we did not have the Agape meal but the traditional Maundy Thursday liturgy including foot washing. On Good Friday we joined with other churches in Woking to carry the cross into Woking town center for the act of witness. Easter Sunday was a wonderful and joyous time, starting with the (now annual) dawn bonfire in the vicarage garden. Social Events This year our quiz night took place in person and we raised over £1198.00 which for our size was amazing and an increase of nearly £400 on last year. We also held Family Fireworks in November and had a good gathering of families. PCC The PCC has been really engaged with things this year again and we are at our full quota ofmembers for the size church we are. Celia and Chris are our representatives at Diocesan Synod and Barbara is our representatives on Deanery Synod Midweek Our regular connection with local care homes has continued and it is a privilege to be able to minister to the more elderly members of the community. We have regular commitments in Bernard Sunley and the monthly service in Woking Homes has resumed too. There is a small group that regularly comes to our Sunday services from Woking Homes, brought along by Carol Wells.

Rev’d Nick Hutchinson is still a trustee with MASCOT and ACROSS and regularly engage with their events andgovernance as do other members of the congregation at St Paul’s. Comings and Goings We have grown again in our overall numbers and the number of regular Sunday attendees. It is wonderful that God has grown us and we must to pray that this will continue and that we will grow in depth of faith too. Sadly this year we said goodbye to Jean Harden and Tony Burgoyne. It was wonderful to beable to celebrate both Mary and Tony with a thanksgiving service in November. Looking Ahead It is really important that we live fully in the present but keeping an eye on and a step towards the future. Jesus keeps us moving and growing and calls us to an ever deeper life of worship, prayer, community and healing. We look forward to being continually shaped by the vision God has set before us. We want to be every increasingly better

stewards of the creation we have been given and we will be focusing on this in lent 2023. We will also be looking to refresh our collective prayer life as a church and learn about and seek the gifts and ministry of the holy spirit among us. 2023 will be a year of renewal among us.
