Supplementary Notes

Relationship to SLACC Charitable Incorporated Organisation No 1202875

In July 2023 we, the trustees of the original charity, sought and received approval to establish a new CIO charity. The new charity, number 1202875, retained the name of this unincorporated charity, South Lakes Action on Climate Change – towards transition. Over 2023, with the approval of our funders, we transferred most of our funds into the new charity. Due to ongoing legal action relating to our Coal Mine Campaign, we continued to retain funds and proceed with the campaign from the original charity. It is our intention to close this charity when the legal work and resolution of our financial liabilities are complete.

Ongoing Activity

In April 2025 our last UK legal case was concluded. However, the investors of the Cumbrian Coal Mine venture have since opened a case with the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) against the UK Government. We are monitoring this and have raised funds to enable us to pursue further action should we wish so to do.

Objectives and Activities

Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document	Para 1.17	Our objects are: to promote for the benefit of the public the conservation protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment, and to advance the education of the public in the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment. Our aims relate to increasing the local awareness of climate change and sustainability, and to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts.	Para 1.17 and 1.19	The charity’s single project in 2025 was our Cumbria Coal Mine Campaign, which was underpinned by the funds identified in the accounts. The project aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by challenging the decision to grant a coal mine planning permission, and to educate the public on the issues.

Achievements and Performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole.	Para 1.20	Following the success of our 2024 campaign, we stayed involved in a potential redetermination of the planning application during early 2025. The eventual withdrawal of the application was a significant achievement, preventing global greenhouse gas emissions of up to 200 million tonnes that would have been released by the use of the coal. This helped to limit harms to local beneficiaries, and society as a whole, that would have resulted from higher and faster increases in global temperatures.

Achievements against objectives set	Para 1.41	We had hoped legal processes related to the coal mine would end in 2025 and our objective of closing this charity could be met. However, the mining company launched a claim against the UK government at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes, (ICSID)and our charity is uniquely placed to make a submission to the Tribunal as a non- disputing party.
