Chairs Report

Welcome to the annual report for 2022.

2022 has been a busy year for us, and much has been achieved. After 18 months of reflection, taking expert advice and listening to members and stakeholders, we submitted our application to the Charity Commission to convert SLACC-tt from a Registered Charity to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation, along with a new draft constitution in April 2023. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this review. As soon as we know if the application is approved, we will take the necessary steps to set up the new organisation, also to be known as SLACC-tt.

Meanwhile we carry on under the current governance arrangements as a registered charity, and remain committed to our objectives which are all for the public benefit. We hold our Trustee meetings every two months to plan and review progress plus take reports from nominated Trustees who oversee our projects. Members and supporters are welcome to attend any Trustees meeting, by request. We ask for prior notice of matters attendees wish to raise for adding to the agenda.

This year we ensured all our policies were up to date, and made significant updates to the safeguarding policy. All volunteers are made aware of the policies, which are made available on our website.

We recruit trustees from among our members and by spreading the word amongst other groups. We encourage anyone interested in becoming a Trustee to attend a meeting and talk with existing Trustees to better gauge whether becoming a Trustee is for them. We welcome new Trustees with all levels of experience–all we ask is that you bring a can-do attitude and share our values.

I would like to thank Quentin Merritt who has been a Trustee for the past few years, and who is standing down at this time. He has generously shared his time, expertise and ideas in this role. We wish him well with future endeavours. As momentum on tackling the climate emergency grows, the charity has seen another busy year, with an expansion of our volunteer and member base. There continue to be lots of developments in our two main projects: the campaign

3

against an application to open a new coal mine in Cumbria and the Waste into Wellbeing Project, both reported on below.

SLACC-tt’s work wouldn’t be possible without the dedicated support of volunteers, members and Trustees and effective teamwork, and I am very grateful for everyone’s contribution.

Paid work (all freelance)

Currently we fund Stacy Hurley as our Development Manager for the Waste into Wellbeing project. Stacy has further developed our portfolio including establishing both new funding and new projects.

In addition we also contract a food logistics officer, Paul Etherington, who has significantly improved our management and distribution of surplus food.

Membership

Lisa Kenton, our previous Membership Secretary, stepped down in 2022 after several years and we owe her our thanks for her hard work, foresight and role in establishing the robust GoCardless payment system. Matthew Smithers is our new Membership Secretary.

At the end of the financial year 2022 SLACtt had 91 members paying by GoCardless and 14 by standing order. This was an increase of 37 members since the year 2021.

Nearly 30% of the funds provided by GoCardless members were paid in January resulting in an early availability of GoCardless revenue.

Income from membership for 2022 amounted to £2,093 from GoCardless and £205 from Standing orders.

Insurance

We hold a policy with Zurich Policy No XAO 1220618953 This is valid till 1[st] June 2023 when it will be renewed. It covers all our activities.

Constitution

Our current constitution and policies can be seen at https://slacc.org.uk/about/policies/

4

Our charitable objectives in 2022 were:

1) To promote for the benefit of the public the conservation protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment.

2) To advance the education of the public in the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment.

In furtherance to these objects, SLACC's aims are to:

1) To increase a local awareness of local and global issues surrounding climate change and sustainability.

2) To support activities to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.

3) To establish a just transition to net zero in the local area

4) To take every reasonable step to minimise the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the group’s activities.

5) To promote equality, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of our activities

The trustees confirm that they have complied with the requirements of section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the public benefit guidance published by the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

5

Project and Campaigns

In accordance with our policy, we have continued to focus on two main projects in 2022 the campaign against the coal mine, and Waste into Wellbeing. We also report in this section upon our contribution to the Kendal Citizens Climate Jury where we devoted some time.

1. Campaign against the building of a new coal mine in Cumbria

A summary of the challenge so far plus the key reasons why we oppose the Cumbria coal mine can be seen at https://slacc.org.uk/cumbria-coal-mine/.

We believe that our input into the inquiry, and the media discussion that it instigated, has made a significant contribution to both national and global opposition to new fossil fuel developments.

2. Waste into Wellbeing (Kendal Peoples Café) report for 2022

Environmental and Social Impact of Waste into

Wellbeing

The project aims to achieve environmental alongside social gains. To that end it has achieved a lot and continues to grow. We are looking to bring together its food share and Café on one site alongside a centre for sustainability in Kendal.

The project has 90 volunteers registered, of whom approximately 30 are active at any time. Find our website pages at https://slacc.org.uk/wiw/

6

4 . The Woolly Saddle Cargo Bike trial.

Jointly financed by Kendal Town Council alongside ourselves, together with a month’s free lone of a Raleigh Cargo Bike in September 2022, this project informed us on the future management and potential for a cargo bike in Kendal. The project was managed by SLACC member Jo Haughton, and a report can be seen here.

The project demonstrated the possibilities for a cargo bike Kendal. We are now looking at developing the business plan, storage and

financing for a permanent project and have some funds available from Zero Carbon Cumbria to develop that this year.

Review of targets set for 2022

  1. Propose a future direction and priorities for SLACC-tt based upon the review process currently underway. CIO application submitted 3[rd] April 2023, with updated constitution agreed by Trustees and Members at EGM 20 March 2023

  2. Roll out awareness and understanding of new policies (health & safety, equality & diversity, code of conduct, environment) Policies up to date, promoted with new volunteers and published. New Safeguarding policy

7

  1. Increase the participation of members and volunteers in our work. We still have work to do here and would welcome members to help in stepping forward to organize events.

  2. Continue our campaign against the Cumbria Coalmine. Be prepared to launch a judicial review based upon the decision of Michael Gove.

  3. We continued our campaign against the Cumbria Coalmine Application to challenge SOS decision lodged January 2023

  4. Continue to develop Waste into Wellbeing and Kendal People’s Café. Grow the collection of food from local businesses and explore ways to distribute this across the town and surrounding villages to deliver impact in the local community. Develop a stronger complementary focus on reducing food waste.

See previous report on progress

Our Funders

We remain indebted to the numerous supporters of our projects, particularly waste food re-distribution.

And in addition, individuals who have regularly supported us alongside donations made at share and café events. These donations have helped us to maintain and develop aspects of our work which are not directly funded.
