Harmony House Activity Report March 2021 – Dec 2022

After one year of partial closure and 12 long hard months for our children and their families, we were finally granted permission by the government to welcome all our students back to our centres from grades 1-12 which was a huge relief for us all.

All social distancing measures undertaken by following the 50% capacity rule in Harmony House. Due to this, we were holding morning and afternoon classes accommodating two learning sessions a day. Despite the shorter hours for our children, we were committed to providing them with the best standard of education, nutrition, medical services, vocational training, love and care. Hours outside of Harmony House were supplemented with online learning and access to our community centre within their slum area.

Soon we were able to go ahead and sign the lease for the second center which we had to give up at the beginning of Covid due to limited resources and the need of the hour being to look into food, nutrition and the problem of unemployment of our children’s families belonging to the daily wage earning community.

While preparing for re-opening we fed into our our inspiration and drive to serve that comes from our resilient, strong, determined and positive children. The lockdown was more than challenging for all of humanity but the suffering became worse than ever for those who were already living below the poverty line on just two meals a day. It became a daily battle as families fought hard to feed, clothe and shelter their children.

We prepared for the reopening of our Early Year Wing which accommodated 150 children - ages 6 months to 6 years. We refurbished their classrooms and hope to make an environment where our children can learn, play, be safe and nourished.

These early education years are fundamental to building a foundation for learning that will stay with a child forever.

Special Needs Wing - May 2021

At Harmony House, we believe every child deserves a chance no matter how unique they are. We went on and opened a special needs wing and aim to start with 7 children who have been identified by our team and have had their first round of assessment by a professional.

The children were been diagnosed with ADHD, cerebral palsy, nerve damage, speech and hearing challenges. We set up a room with all of the necessary tools, equipment and assistance they will require to be able to come to us safely and with ease.

Today we have 12 children with special needs who have been showing remarkable progress.

Vocational classes

Our long term objective at Harmony House is to provide each of our children with realistic goals and aspirations and most importantly, ensure that they have the tools to achieve them. Wherever possible, we strive to place our 18 year olds in local colleges or businesses. This is an ongoing project that we are constantly evolving to ensure that the needs of our children are met.

As is sadly common among children who live below the poverty line, pursuing secondary and tertiary education is an unbearable financial burden on their families. That’s why our Vocational Training programmes have proved crucial in equipping as well as training our children and young adults to secure a viable job once they reach the legal working age.

Currently, we offer training in skills such as tailoring, cosmetology, yoga, music, data entry and coding among others, in small groups led by trained and certified instructors who assess them according to established performance indicators in the field.

We are pleased to now be able to extend these programmes to other young adults in the community who were not able to attend school as they needed to work, usually as domestic help, to support their family. As with all our educational classes, we offer sessions throughout the day so that students can work around their existing work schedules.

Due to the lockdown and closing of centers there was a halt on the vocational training classes that we were delivering in-house. We gradually started providing these courses in small groups and worked on up scaling them to ensure better they have trained faculty and certified qualifications. Authorized curriculums are followed using key performance indicators which will be assessed and attained before children can go to the next level.

We have worked on having a professional setup for the children so they can experience how it feels in an actual work environment. We have developed a small beauty parlor at Harmony House to allow children to learn on a professional level as well as a stitching boutique and community learning space.

Our center at the slum

The lockdown and many versions of guidelines made us open a centre at the slum for our youngest children who were not allowed to come into the main centres due to government restrictions.

Once the lockdown got lifted we decided to carry on with a set up at the slum as it really worked for the children in terms of convenience and distance. We then moved on to a bigger slum centre and finally opened up 2 centres in 2022 – one in Jan (Early learning Centre ) and in November (Primary centre) which enabled us to almost double the number of students we were helping from 550 to over 1000.

Slum Fires in Gurgaon

In April 2021, multiple devastating fires broke out in just days apart – one in Nathupur Village and one at a slum near sector 35, Gurgaon and few more in the neighboring areas.

100’s of families left with nothing but the clothes they had on themselves. No food, clothes or even clean drinking water. We sent out aid packs including essential items and material for building new shacks so they were able to have a roof over their heads. These families who were hard hit due to the pandemic hit rock bottom. Aid packs were regularly sent out ot these families along with tarpaulins for them to be able to build shelters to live in.

Care Package Distribution Drives

Our life saving initiative of care package distribution wherein packs comprise of essential ration supplies and hygiene products which was started in March 2020 and still ongoing has reached over 25000 people.

This initiative has been ongoing till date to extend support to those who genuinely need it.

Women Empowerment And Community Development

In under-educated stratas of society, oppressive patriarchy often rears its head in the guise of ‘tradition’. Men are given the freedom to work, and their negative actions are ignored, even if they manifest as domestic violence including sexually assaulting their wives, alcoholism and controlling behaviour such as not ‘allowing’ the females of their family any trace of financial and mental freedom. At Harmony House, we are working hard to tackle this issue by employing mothers of our children and giving them the ability to enjoy a sense of financial independence as well as selfreliance outside of their restrictive family situations. While working outside the home remains a contentious issue, doing so at Harmony House is often accepted by their families as their children are also with us.

Additionally, we hold regular workshops on sexual assault, self defence, child marriage and birth control, among others.

Medical Relief

At Harmony House, we provide regular medical aid for our children – a vital offering due to the lack of facilities in the slums where they live.

To ensure the health and well-being of our children, we:

Undertake general checkups and update medical records from doctors’ visits.
Accompany families to hospitals to help them communicate with doctors when required and ensure treatment protocols are followed.
Obtain necessary vaccinations provided by the government and administer them at Harmony House with the help of our full-time nurse.
Periodically conduct blood tests, x-rays and other investigative reports with the assistance of qualified and licensed medical professionals.
Maintain a healthy buffer of OTC medical supplies and supplements along with a corpus for medical emergencies and surgeries.

· Facilitate medical treatments, operations and follow-up care for our special medical cases.

Many cases have been helped during the past years and lot of positive impact has been achieved.

We at Harmony House realize the importance and effectiveness of sports as a way to achieve wellness apart from being a great opportunity for our children to excel and make a living.

Just few months back started on our our initiative under the wing Sports and Wellness and have initiated physical education for our junior students. We have started identifying strengths and interests of older children and some have already started training for kabaddi and chess. We went on and got on board a full time coordinator for this specifically who helps identify and streamline all of our 1000 children in various sports and wellness programs. In Feb 2023 we are going to be organizing a sports week for our children under this initiative.

This is one great way for even having a positive impact on mental health which has further motivated us to get on board an in-house qualified psychologist as part of our team. Her role includes counselling students for their career, helping cases who have dealt with trauma like loosing a family member, victims of domestic violence and much more.

Since the opening of our 4[th] centre in November 2022 we have been able to organise the centres age wise where children in the ELY centre (150 students) has children from 6 months – 6 years.

The primary centre (250 children) have children from 7-10 years. The middle wing has 300 children from grade 1-5, special needs wing and vocational set up and the senior wing (300 + children) has children from grade 6-12, college students, medical clinic, etc.

Apart from these activities we have been having a lot of health camps, festive celebrations, volunteer events and workshops, outings for the

children and much more on a continuous basis to be able ot achieve an overall positive development of out children. A lot of our students have gone on to college and working (self employed and working for corporates, internships and lots more.

Harmony House is an Indian and UK registered, non-profit organisation in Gurgaon, India. We have transformed two villas into full-time community centres for over 550 women and children from a nearby slum, where they are offered offer education, nutrition, medical facilities, hygiene facilities , vocational training and social services.

We rely 100% on kind donations and contributions to run Harmony House. Every donation, no matter how big or small is spent on improving the lives of those who are most in need. INDEPENDENT AUDITOR'S REPORT

TO THE MEMBERS OF HARMONY HOUSE

REPORT ON THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

We have audited the Balance Sheet of Harmony House which comprises of the Balance Sheet as at 31st March, 2022 and Income and Expenditure Account for the year ended on that date annexed thereto, and a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information.

MANAGEMENT’S RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

Management is responsible for the preparation of these financial statements that give a true and fair view of the financial position, financial performance and cash flows of the trust in accordance with the accounting principles generally accepted in India. This responsibility includes the design, implementation and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation and presentation of the financial statements which give a true and fair view and are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

AUDITOR’S RESPONSIBILITY

Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with the Standards on Auditing issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement.

An audit includes examination of records on the test basis and disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes an assessment of significant estimates and judgment made by the management in the preparation of the financial statements and whether the accounting policies are appropriate to the trust, consistently applied and adequately disclosed. The procedures selected depend on auditor's judgment including the assessment of the risks of the material misstatement of financial statements, due to fraud or error. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of the accounting statements. We believe that evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.

OPINION

In our opinion and to the best of our information and according to the explanations given to us, proper books of accounts have been kept by the above-named Trust so far as appears from our examination of the books and aforesaid financial statements give the information required by the Act in the manner so required and give a true and fair view in conformity with the accounting principles generally accepted in India;

i) In the case of the Balance Sheet, of the State of Affairs of the Trust as at 31[st ] March, 2022; and
ii) In the case of Income & Expenditure accounts, of the Excess of Expenditure over Income for the year ended on 31[st ] March, 2022.

REPORT ON OTHER LEGAL AND REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

Further, subject to notes to accounts, we report that:

a) We have obtained all the information and explanations which to the best of our knowledge and belief were necessary for the purposes of audit;
b) In our opinion, proper books of account, as required by law, have been kept by the Trust, so far as appears from our examination of those books.
c) The Balance Sheet and Income and Expenditure Account dealt with by this report are in agreement with the books of account.
d) In our opinion and to the best of our information and according to the explanations given to us, the said consolidated accounts of the Trust together with significant accounting policies and notes thereon, give the information in the manner so required and give a true and fair view:-
